Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SWChief34 Minutes prior to arriving at Lamy, NM, here we see Amtrak’s westbound Southwest Chief #3 as it slowly negotiates Apache Canyon on a cold and rainy mid-May afternoon. Making a rare appearance on this route, decorated in the Phase I paint scheme; this train features Heritage unit #156 as the trailing locomotive. Also, starring an exuberant crew, they wave while delivering an abundance of horn as their train approaches and ultimately passes by. There are two consecutive locomotives powering today’s westbound Chief, both of which are P42s: #157 leading with #156 trailing. This video was recorded on May 16, 2015. Thanks for watching! Apache Canyon is one of numerous overnight quick camping destinations north of Los Angeles. Many who visit take advantage of hunting and off road vehicle opportunities. Apache Canyon was not our intended destination. On this adventure we ran into and armed group of militia-looking psychos who greeted us while we were out foraging for wood with rifles... so we moved to Apache Canyon as an alternative destination. The terrain is much better suited for dirtbikes and ATV's than Jeeps. Enjoy.

Connect with us on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/SWChief34 So last weekend I decided to hike into Apache Canyon. Seen here is a shot of Amtrak's eastbound Southwest Chief #4 as it slowly travels through Apache Canyon just before passing its sister train, Amtrak #3. At a length of 1,000 feet, this short yet scenic canyon is what connects Lamy, NM to Canyoncito, NM. This train has just made its daily departure from Lamy, NM, and is running about 1 hour and 30 minutes late as it continues its journey east. There are two locomotives powering today's eastbound Chief, both are P42s: #78 leading with #81 trailing. This video was recorded on August 25, 2013. Thanks for watching! SWChief34

Come along with us as we climb aboard Amtrak’s Southwest Chief for an amazing, 3-day adventure across America. Beginning in Chicago, Illinois, our train will take us over 2,200 miles to Los Angeles, California, on the former route of Santa Fe’s Super Chief streamliner. From Illinois farm country, transitioning to Kansas prairie, we thunder across Colorado, and head over the Rocky Mountains on the steep grades of Raton Pass. Then it’s down through New Mexico on scenic tracks that today are only used by Amtrak. Seemingly frozen in time are relics from Santa Fe’s heyday, including semaphore signals and long stretches of jointed rail, as we pass the historic landmarks of Wagon Mound, Glorieta Pass, and Apache Canyon. Soon we make it to California, running over Cajon Pass before making our gran...

Video recorded in Arizona in 1995, just before Southern Pacific and Acheson Topeka & Santa Fe Railway lost their identities in the UP and BNSF mergers, respectively. I visited several short lines including Apache, Grand Canyon and Copper Basin. Amtrak's Sunset Limited and Southwest Chief also make several appearances.

Apaches, townsfolk, a Mexican bandit and the cavalry follow a sheriff to a mythical canyon of gold. But they're not the only ones who're after the gold; soon they meet a group of "honorable" citizens and the cavalry crosses their way too, and that is even before they enter Indian territory.
