Richard John Sinclair Laws, CBE (born 8 August 1935), an Australian radio presenter, sometimes known as Lawsie, was from the 1970s until his retirement in 2007, the host of a hugely successful morning radio program, which mixed music with interviews, opinion, live advertising readings and listener talkback. His distinctive voice earned him the nickname the Golden Tonsils.
Despite retiring in 2007, Laws' management confirmed in November 2010 that he would be returning to radio in February 2011, as the host of a morning programme on 2SM and the Super Radio Network.
Laws' radio show was syndicated throughout Australia for many years and was consistently one of the most popular and influential programs in the Australian media. Laws is also a familiar voice for generations of Australians through his large and varied body of work as a voice-over artist for commercials, and as a celebrity endorser of commercial products, notably Valvoline motor oil, with his popular catchphrase "Valvoline, you know what I mean" and Oral-B toothbrushes (the slogan "Oral-B, the toothbrush more dentists use.")
The Bali Nine is the name given to a group of nine Australians convicted for smuggling 8.3 kg (18 lb) of heroin valued at around A$4 million (3.1 million US dollars) from Indonesia to Australia. Ringleaders Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were sentenced to death and were executed on 29 April 2015. Other members Si Yi Chen, Michael Czugaj, Renae Lawrence, Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen, Matthew Norman, Scott Rush, and Martin Stephens were sent to prison. Australian authorities contacted their Indonesian counterparts with the tip-off that precipitated these arrests.
On 13 February 2006, Lawrence and Rush, the first of the nine to face sentencing, were sentenced to life imprisonment. The next day, Czugaj and Stephens were sentenced to life imprisonment, and the group ringleaders, Chan and Sukumaran, were sentenced to death by firing squad, the first ever death sentences imposed by the Denpasar District Court. The other three, Norman, Chen and Nguyen, were all sentenced to life imprisonment on 15 February 2006. On 26 April 2006, Lawrence, Nguyen, Chen, and Norman appealed and had their sentences reduced to 20 years, while the life sentences for Czugaj and Stephens were upheld. Prosecutors launched appeals against the changes in their sentences.

Home video on a Sony handy cam recorded on Tuesday 15th April 1997 at the old 2UE Studios, 176 Pacific Hwy, Greenwich. Leading out of the 11am news, for 10 mins, then later into the closer theme and Midday News. You can see Mr Laws from the panel operators, Studio D point of view, looking into Studio C - the set up was before the use of digital with 80s analogue studios from Paul Kirk and the use of tape audio cartridges. The advantage of analogue was being able to physically handle the audio output media and bar mechanical failure, you could always substitute another machine and carry on, when a computer fails, a reboot leaves gaps of wide open air space, making it obvious that something has really gone wrong. As an audio operator/producer you really had to focus and work the console ...

John Laws has a jolly old pick at his rival Alan Jones. The 'Ernie Awards for Sexist Remarks' is an annual event held for women. The women in attendance have a dinner and then listen to various sexist remarks made by public personalities from the past year. Whichever remark gets the loudest boos from the audience wins the title in each ten categories. Alan Jones has been a feature in the awards for many years, this time taking out The Celebrity Ernie. John couldn't pass up an opportunity to have a laugh at Alan's expense. Taken from the John Laws Morning Show podcast on Thursday 10th of October, 2013 on the 2SM website.
