Paul Giamatti

Paul Edward Valentine Giamatti (/dʒiəˈmɑːti/; born June 6, 1967) is an American actor. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the film Cinderella Man and is also known for his roles in the films Private Parts, Sideways, American Splendor, The Illusionist, Cold Souls, Barney's Version, Big Fat Liar, Love & Mercy, Straight Outta Compton, and Win Win, as well as the miniseries John Adams. He has won two Golden Globe Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award and four Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Early life

Giamatti was born in New Haven, Connecticut, the youngest of three children. His father, A. Bartlett Giamatti (Angelo Bartlett Giamatti), was a Yale University professor who later became president of the university and commissioner of Major League Baseball. His mother, Toni Marilyn Giamatti (née Smith), was a homemaker and English teacher who taught at Hopkins School and had also previously acted. His paternal grandfather's family were Italian immigrants from Telese Terme; the family surname was originally spelled "Giammattei" (Italian pronunciation: [dʒammatˈtɛi]). The rest of Giamatti's ancestry is German, Dutch, English, French, Irish, and Scottish. His paternal grandmother had deep roots in New England, dating back to the colonial era. His brother, Marcus, is also an actor, and his sister, Elena, is a jewelry designer.

Rosamund Pike

Rosamund Mary Ellen Pike (born 28 January 1979) is an English actress. She began her acting career by appearing in stage productions such as Romeo and Juliet and Skylight. She made her screen debut in the television film A Rather English Marriage (1998), followed by television roles in Wives and Daughters (1999) and Love in a Cold Climate (2001). She received international recognition for her film debut as Bond girl Miranda Frost in Die Another Day (2002), for which she received the Empire Award for Best Newcomer. Following her breakthrough, she won the BIFA Award for Best Supporting Actress for The Libertine (2004) and portrayed Jane Bennett in Pride and Prejudice (2005), for which she was nominated for the London Film Critics' Circle Award for British Supporting Actress of the Year.

Mordecai Richler

Mordecai Richler, CC (January 27, 1931 – July 3, 2001) was a Quebec-Canadian writer. His best known works are The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (1959) and Barney's Version (1997). His 1989 novel Solomon Gursky Was Here was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. He is also well known for the Jacob Two-Two children's fantasy series.

In addition to his fiction, Richler wrote numerous essays about Quebec nationalistic tendencies, related pitfalls, examples of short sightedness, double standards, and secondarily about the Jewish community in Canada and Quebec. Arriving as immigrants in Canada to Montreal, an English enclave in predominantly French Quebec. immigrants usually preferred English, not French, as a second language after their mother tongue. This later put them at odds with the Quebec nationalist movement, which argued for French as the only official language of Québec. His Oh Canada! Oh Quebec! (1992), a collection of essays about Quebec nationalism and xenophobia, generated considerable controversy amongst the nationalistic leaders in Quebec at the time. It was even refused to be translated into French until many years later.
