An experienced former pro, Charly Wegelius is now the DS for Garmin Sharp and he took us along for the day during stage 6 of the Tirreno Adriatico. The day was full of extremely steep climbs, and the weather deteriorated into terrible rain, so not a fun day for the riders.
An early break by a group of 16 left teams fighting to catch up, and some of the Garmin riders really struggled in the conditions, and punctures and mechanicals didn't help either!

Directeur Sportifs are the team managers and coaches of professional cycling.

Directeur sportifs, or sports directors run the show once a bike race starts. They drive the team car and make tactical calls during the race. Their role isn't limited to management during the race though. They also plan the team's strategy from stage to stage and decide which riders are in form and need the support of the team. This means that DS's often have to make difficult decisions - who would you have backed at the 2012 Tour de France? Chris Froome or Bradley Wiggins?

A directeur sportif, otherwise known as a sports director, is the person who is in charge of a team at a race.
They will create a tactical plan, which they will discuss with the riders before the start of each race.
Once the race starts, they will then drive the team car in the convoy behind the race, and they will be in communication with the riders via the earpieces and radios.
But that's not all they do as explained by Ex-Professional Cyclist Dan Lloyd in this excellent video.

Race radios are a contentious topic, so we spent the day with Orica-GreenEDGE's Directeur Sportif Matt Wilson to find out how the team use them during the Vuelta.

There are three radios in the team cars - one as the race feed from the organisers to let everyone know if something has happened, one to communicate between the two team cars on the rad and the one at the feed station and finally one for communicating to the riders.
The riders and the DS speak fairly regularly, however it is very, very hard to hear what the riders say with Matt saying he hears roughly 50% of what the riders say. This being the case, it is much easier for a rider to come back to the car to talk to the Directeur Sportif - and to pick up more drinks.
We were also amazed at the speeds at which the cars drive down narrow roads, avoiding all kinds of obstacles - really quite incredible!

Jonatan MacHardy est revenu ce samedi soir dans l’After Foot sur le nouveau rôle du directeur sportif. Un rôle qui selon lui commence à changer, notamment avec le nouveau contexte du marché des transferts qui se dessine depuis quelques années maintenant. En effet, aujourd’hui la puissance financière accrue des clubs leur permet plus facilement d’aligner les zéros afin d’attirer les joueurs désirés. Et c’est donc dans ce nouveau contexte que, pour Jonatan MacHardy, le directeur sportif joue un rôle encore plus important qu’auparavant. Notamment en ce qui concerne les clubs « intermédiaires ».

Directeur sportif
A directeur sportif (French for sporting director, although the original French term is often used in English-language media; plural directeurs sportifs) is a person directing a cycling team during a road bicycle racing event. At professional level, a directeur sportif follows the team in a car and communicates with riders, personnel and race officials by radio.
The directeur sportif warns of obstacles or challenging terrain, updates the team on the situation in the race, and provides mechanical help. The car carrying the directeur sportif also usually carries a bicycle mechanic with spare bikes, wheels and parts. It also carries spare water bottles, food and medical equipment.
In recent years the role has increased, in keeping with better team cohesion, tactics and communication and telemetry equipment. The directeur sportif can have split times, find where riders from other teams are in the race, and dictate orders to riders. This has made teamwork and tactics more important.

Road racing
In North America, road racing is motor racing held on a paved closed circuit with both left and right turns. Road racing is therefore distinct from both off-road racing and oval track racing; the latter is common in North America and involves turning in only one direction (usually left, counter-clockwise). Road racing may be on purpose-built race tracks (called road courses) or on temporary circuits, such as closed-off airport runways and public roads, typically street circuits. A "roval" is a road course incorporating parts of an oval track and its infield, such as is used for the 24 Hours of Daytona at Daytona International Speedway.
In British English, the term is usually used for short circuit events held at purpose-built facilities typically of one to three miles in length, often with scenic, landscaped surroundings resembling parkland. Many older facilities were based on disused former-airfields after [World War II]] and have fallen into disrepair and been re-purposed and built-over, and, although some have endured for closed-to-club and British national events, only Silverstone, having benefitted from a massive redevelopment, is of international standard.

Le nouveau rôle du directeur sportif selon Jonatan MacHardy
Jonatan MacHardy est revenu ce samedi soir dans l’After Foot sur le nouveau rôle du directeur sportif. Un rôle qui selon lui commence à changer, notamment avec le nouveau contexte du marché des transferts qui se dessine depuis quelques années maintenant. En effet, aujourd’hui la puissance financière accrue des clubs leur permet plus facilement d’aligner les zéros afin d’attirer les joueurs désirés. Et c’est donc dans ce nouveau contexte que, pour Jonatan MacHardy, le directeur sportif joue un rôle encore plus important qu’auparavant. Notamment en ce qui concerne les clubs « intermédiaires ».

An experienced former pro, Charly Wegelius is now the DS for Garmin Sharp and he took us along for the day during stage 6 of the Tirreno Adriatico. The day was full of extremely steep climbs, and the weather deteriorated into terrible rain, so not a fun day for the riders.
An early break by a group of 16 left teams fighting to catch up, and some of the Garmin riders really struggled in the conditions, and punctures and mechanicals didn't help either!

Directeur sportifs, or sports directors run the show once a bike race starts. They drive the team car and make tactical calls during the race. Their role isn't limited to management during the race though. They also plan the team's strategy from stage to stage and decide which riders are in form and need the support of the team. This means that DS's often have to make difficult decisions - who would you have backed at the 2012 Tour de France? Chris Froome or Bradley Wiggins?

A directeur sportif, otherwise known as a sports director, is the person who is in charge of a team at a race.
They will create a tactical plan, which they will discuss with the riders before the start of each race.
Once the race starts, they will then drive the team car in the convoy behind the race, and they will be in communication with the riders via the earpieces and radios.
But that's not all they do as explained by Ex-Professional Cyclist Dan Lloyd in this excellent video.

Race radios are a contentious topic, so we spent the day with Orica-GreenEDGE's Directeur Sportif Matt Wilson to find out how the team use them during the Vuelta.

There are three radios in the team cars - one as the race feed from the organisers to let everyone know if something has happened, one to communicate between the two team cars on the rad and the one at the feed station and finally one for communicating to the riders.
The riders and the DS speak fairly regularly, however it is very, very hard to hear what the riders say with Matt saying he hears roughly 50% of what the riders say. This being the case, it is much easier for a rider to come back to the car to talk to the Directeur Sportif - and to pick up more drinks.
We were also amazed at the speeds at which the cars drive down narrow roads, avoiding all kinds of obstacles - really quite incredible!

Le nouveau rôle du directeur sportif selon Jonatan MacHardy
Jonatan MacHardy est revenu ce samedi soir dans l’After Foot sur le nouveau rôle du directeur sportif. Un rôle qui selon lui commence à changer, notamment avec le nouveau contexte du marché des transferts qui se dessine depuis quelques années maintenant. En effet, aujourd’hui la puissance financière accrue des clubs leur permet plus facilement d’aligner les zéros afin d’attirer les joueurs désirés. Et c’est donc dans ce nouveau contexte que, pour Jonatan MacHardy, le directeur sportif joue un rôle encore plus important qu’auparavant. Notamment en ce qui concerne les clubs « intermédiaires ».

An experienced former pro, Charly Wegelius is now the DS for Garmin Sharp and he took us along for the day during stage 6 of the Tirreno Adriatico. The day was full of extremely steep climbs, and the weather deteriorated into terrible rain, so not a fun day for the riders.
An early break by a group of 16 left teams fighting to catch up, and some of the Garmin riders really struggled in the conditions, and punctures and mechanicals didn't help either!

Directeur sportifs, or sports directors run the show once a bike race starts. They drive the team car and make tactical calls during the race. Their role isn't limited to management during the race though. They also plan the team's strategy from stage to stage and decide which riders are in form and need the support of the team. This means that DS's often have to make difficult decisions - who would you have backed at the 2012 Tour de France? Chris Froome or Bradley Wiggins?

A directeur sportif, otherwise known as a sports director, is the person who is in charge of a team at a race.
They will create a tactical plan, which they will discuss with the riders before the start of each race.
Once the race starts, they will then drive the team car in the convoy behind the race, and they will be in communication with the riders via the earpieces and radios.
But that's not all they do as explained by Ex-Professional Cyclist Dan Lloyd in this excellent video.

Race radios are a contentious topic, so we spent the day with Orica-GreenEDGE's Directeur Sportif Matt Wilson to find out how the team use them during the Vuelta.

There are three radios in the team cars - one as the race feed from the organisers to let everyone know if something has happened, one to communicate between the two team cars on the rad and the one at the feed station and finally one for communicating to the riders.
The riders and the DS speak fairly regularly, however it is very, very hard to hear what the riders say with Matt saying he hears roughly 50% of what the riders say. This being the case, it is much easier for a rider to come back to the car to talk to the Directeur Sportif - and to pick up more drinks.
We were also amazed at the speeds at which the cars drive down narrow roads, avoiding all kinds of obstacles - really quite incredible!

Au fil des rencontres, l'état-major marseillais a été séduit par le profil de l'ancien gardien du FC Barcelone et de la sélection espagnole, ex-directeur sportif de l'Athletic Bilbao (2001-2004) et du Barça (juillet 2010-janvier 2015).
