Stanton, Texas

Stanton is a city in and the county seat of Martin County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,492 at the 2010 census.

History

In 1887, New York native John Scharbauer established a cattle ranch in what later became known as Stanton.

Geography

Stanton is located at 32°7′51″N 101°47′31″W / 32.13083°N 101.79194°W / 32.13083; -101.79194 (32.130740, -101.792072).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4.7 km²), of which, 1.8 square miles (4.7 km²) of it is land and 0.56% is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,556 people, 854 households, and 651 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,458.1 people per square mile (563.9/km²). There were 1,002 housing units at an average density of 571.6 per square mile (221.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 73.98% White, 2.86% African American, 0.74% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 19.56% from other races, and 2.54% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 52.90% of the population.

The word Stanton is derived from Old English term stan ‘stone’ and tun ‘enclosure’ or ‘settlement’, alluding to the stony grounds, where many of these tribes settled. Thus many places took on the name Stanton, like Stanton Harcourt in Oxfordshire, and Stanton Drew in Somerset, close to the Neolithic Stanton Drew stone circles. The origin of Stanton families has been researched by the Stanton DNA Project.

Many variants of the spellings, Stanton, Stainton, Stinton or Staunton, are recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 CE, and the surname can be found in England, Scotland, Ireland and their diaspora, which includes America.

The following characters had significant roles in the American television comedy series Malcolm in the Middle, which was originally televised from 2000–2006 on the Fox Network.

Main characters

Originally there were four brothers (although Malcolm's oldest brother attended a military school away from home, so Malcolm was still the middle sibling left at home). A fifth son was introduced in the show's fourth season, a boy named Jamie. The boys are, from eldest to youngest: Francis, Reese, Malcolm, Dewey, and Jamie. In the final episode, Lois discovered she was pregnant with a sixth child. In the third season, Francis travels home (to celebrate his father's birthday) with an Alaskan girl named Piama, and reveals that they are married.

During the first season, the writers decided to keep the family's last name a mystery. In the fifth season episode "Reese Joins the Army (1)", Reese uses a fake ID by the name of "Jetson" to lie about his age. In the series finale, "Graduation", Francis' employee ID reads "Nolastname" (or "No Last Name", a joke referring to the fact that the family name was never spoken aloud). In the same episode when Malcolm was introduced to give the graduation speech, the speaker announces Malcolm's name, but microphone feedback makes his surname inaudible, even though he does appear to mouth the phrase "No last name".
