Watch Herve's short film, "Matterhorn Obsession", that commemorates the Matterhorn’s anniversary and how for him, it is the only mountain worth climbing more than once. July 14th, 2015 marks the 150th anniversary of the first ascent of the Matterhorn - the renowned mountain in the Alps straddling the border between Italy and Switzerland which has captured imaginations of explorers around the world. In the countless narratives of fearless ambitions, earned successes, and heroic failures on the Matterhorn, Herve Barmasse, accomplished alpinist and mountaineer, plays an indispensible role. This is not just because Barmasse holds the record for making the most first ascents on the Matterhorn, but more so for his fascinating relationship with the mountain.

The call to explore is in every one of us, but the act is a different story. Many people are unwilling to seek out those places where failure is more likely than success, the places we put our so-called passions to the test.
But we go there. We go to that lonely fork between security and difficulty, because that’s where we finally see whether this is something we truly love, or just some pretty pictures and nice-sounding posts built to bolster our egos.
We believe the truest version of ourselves stands well beyond comfort’s perimeter. Shed skin. Lose blood. Find ourselves gasping for breath and drenched in sweat and still not even close to halfway there.
Most people prefer comfort in their lives, forgetting that difficulty is actually what nourishes the human spirit. Risk. Fear. Doubt. The unknown. Now we’re beginning to feel the beating heart of experience. It’s not necessarily the way everyone would choose to live. But it’s our way. The Other Way.

The Eiger is a 3,970 metres (13,020 feet) mountain of the Bernese Alps, forgeting Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen in the Bernese Oberland.
It is the easternmost peak of a ridge crest that extends throughout the Mönch to the Jungfrau at 4,158 m (13,642 feet), constituting among one of the most emblematic sights of the Swiss Alps. While the northern side of the mountain rises more than 3,000 m (10,000 ft) above the valleys of Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen, the southern side faces the large glaciers of the Jungfrau-Aletsch area, one of the most glaciated region in the Alps. One of the most significant function of the Eiger is its 1,800 m (5,900 feet) high north face, called Eigerwand or Nordwand, which is the most significant north face in the . [3]
The first ascent of the Eiger was made by Swiss guides Christian Almer and Peter Bohren and also Irishman Charles Barrington, who climbed the west flank on August 11, 1858. The north face, considered amongst the most tough as well as unsafe ascents, was first climbed in 1938 by an Austrian-German expedition. [4] Since 1935, at least sixty-four mountain climbers have actually passed away attempting the north face, earning it the German label Mordwand, actually "murder(ous) wall"-- a pun on its proper title of Nordwand (North Wall). [5]
From Kleine Scheidegg, near the base of the north face, a railway tunnel runs inside the Eiger, and 2 interior terminals give very easy access to viewing-windows in the mountainside. This Jungfraubahn rack railway terminates in the Jungfraujoch, in between the Mönch as well as the Jungfrau, at the highest railway station in Europe.
The Eiger is mentioned in records going back to the 13th century, yet there is no clear indication of how specifically the peak gained its name. The 3 mountains of the ridge are commonly recommendeded to as the Virgin (German: Jungfrau-- means "virgin" or "initial"), the Monk (Mönch), and the Ogre (Eiger). The name has been connected to the Latin term acer, suggesting "sharp" or "sharp", however much more commonly to the German eigen", meaning "own".
