At its core, evolution is a weeding out process. Remove the weak and flawed and move forward with the best and fittest among existing species. For a species to have lasted through not only generations but across eras and time periods, those inside of that species have to have adapted within their present environment and preserved their existence amidst predatory threats. Humans may be intellectually advanced beings, but we never had to find a means of survival while dinosaurs roamed the earth.
Other creatures, however, did. And, believe it or not, some of them have stuck around to this very day. While we humans view ourselves as the predominant species on the planet, we weren’t the first one’s here, nor are we currently the longest-reigning residents of the planet. When you think about it, this list of prehistoric creatures that continue to exist into the present day features species that have lived alongside – and survived and outlived – some of the biggest, nastiest and most vicious carnivores to ever walk the earth. It helps that so many of the species dwell under water, leaving them safe from some threats while prone to others and also making them rarely seen and almost mythical in nature.
Indeed, little seems to have changed for these species as they’ve forged through so much of the universe’s existence. Most have maintained a remarkable level of similarity in their appearance and behavior from their prehistoric selves. Incredibly, these creatures may not represent a complete collection of what still exists among us. Despite modern advances in scientific technology, we are still learning of existing species both new and old, including ones thought long since extinct. The ancient coelacanth fish, for instance, was thought to have died out 65 million years ago, with researchers unaware that lucky fishermen off the coast of Africa had been occasionally catching them for years. Ultimately, one species came to be officially rediscovered in 1938 and another more recently in 1998.
What we do know, however, is that we share the planet with living things that go back hundreds of millions of years. From ferocious sharks and alligators to living organisms as inert as a sea sponge, species both aggressive and tacit have stuck around long-term. All they share is an ancestry that goes back longer than we could possibly fathom. To put the life span of some of these species into perspective, the modern form of humans has a lineage that only traces back 200,000 years, with our earliest ancestors dating back to about six million years ago. In all of these estimated timelines, you can probably quibble on a million years here and there, but they still paint a picture of some pretty old species.
Suffice to say, the ancestors of these creatures would probably have some stories to tell, provided that they were intelligent beings, could speak and didn’t die millions of years ago. Still, the survival skills of their species clearly can’t be questioned. Here are 10 prehistoric creatures that continue to live among us.

Prehistory (meaning "before history," from the Latin word for "before," præ) is the span of time before recorded history. Prehistory can refer to the period of human existence before the availability of those written records with which recorded history begins. More broadly, it refers to all the time preceding human existence and the invention of writing. Archaeologist Paul Tournal originally coined the term anté-historique in describing the finds he had made in the caves of southern France. Thus, the term came into use in France in the 1830s to describe the time before writing, and the word "prehistoric" was later introduced into English by archaeologist Daniel Wilson in 1851.
The term "prehistory" can refer to the vast span of time since the beginning of the Universe, but more often it refers to the period since life appeared on Earth, or even more specifically to the time since human-like beings appeared. In dividing up human prehistory, prehistorians typically use the three-age system, whereas scholars of pre-human time periods typically use the well defined geologic record and its internationally defined stratum base within the geologic time scale. The three-age system is the periodization of human prehistory into three consecutive time periods, named for their respective predominant tool-making technologies: the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age. Another division of history and prehistory can be made between those written events that can be precisely dated by use of a continuous calendar dating from current and those that can't. The loss of continuity of calendar date most often occurs when a civilization falls and the language and calendar fall into disuse. The current civilization therefore loses the ability to precisely date events written through primary sources to events dated to current calendar dating.

Other creatures, however, did. And, believe it or not, some of them have stuck around to this very day. While we humans view ourselves as the predominant species on the planet, we weren’t the first one’s here, nor are we currently the longest-reigning residents of the planet. When you think about it, this list of prehistoric creatures that continue to exist into the present day features species that have lived alongside – and survived and outlived – some of the biggest, nastiest and most vicious carnivores to ever walk the earth. It helps that so many of the species dwell under water, leaving them safe from some threats while prone to others and also making them rarely seen and almost mythical in nature.
Indeed, little seems to have changed for these species as they’ve forged through so much of the universe’s existence. Most have maintained a remarkable level of similarity in their appearance and behavior from their prehistoric selves. Incredibly, these creatures may not represent a complete collection of what still exists among us. Despite modern advances in scientific technology, we are still learning of existing species both new and old, including ones thought long since extinct. The ancient coelacanth fish, for instance, was thought to have died out 65 million years ago, with researchers unaware that lucky fishermen off the coast of Africa had been occasionally catching them for years. Ultimately, one species came to be officially rediscovered in 1938 and another more recently in 1998.
What we do know, however, is that we share the planet with living things that go back hundreds of millions of years. From ferocious sharks and alligators to living organisms as inert as a sea sponge, species both aggressive and tacit have stuck around long-term. All they share is an ancestry that goes back longer than we could possibly fathom. To put the life span of some of these species into perspective, the modern form of humans has a lineage that only traces back 200,000 years, with our earliest ancestors dating back to about six million years ago. In all of these estimated timelines, you can probably quibble on a million years here and there, but they still paint a picture of some pretty old species.
Suffice to say, the ancestors of these creatures would probably have some stories to tell, provided that they were intelligent beings, could speak and didn’t die millions of years ago. Still, the survival skills of their species clearly can’t be questioned. Here are 10 prehistoric creatures that continue to live among us.

The oldest works of prehistoric art in the world, dating to around 40.000 years back in time, were found in the Schwäbische Alb, Germany. The Venus of Hohle Fels. And the figurine of a mammoth discovered in the Vogelherd cave Germany. Further artworks include cave paintings (France and Spain). And the very first musical instrument ever found - a flute (Germany).
As more and more of prehistoric Europeans had contact with people of other cultures, it has allowed the spread of such concepts to other places.

It's difficult to image, but there was once a time where our planet was host to a wilder, more dangerous, and by far scarier place. Modern day's toughest predators such as the great white shark, tiger, bear, and lion look feeble in comparison to some of the hulking beasts which terrorized the planet back then. From a bird with a wingspan over 40 feet to an ocean predator with teeth so plentiful they hung out of its mouth like massive scissors, prehistoric animals were simultaneously strange looking and terrifying. Today, we will show you some of the strangest, scariest, and most bizarre creatures, even by the standard of their own times. These are 25 strangest prehistoric creatures to rule the Earth.

There's no doubt about it, these are some of the strangest prehistoric creatures ever:
Rodhocetus - Rodhocetus gives us a clear example of a species’ evolutionary transition from land-dweller to sea-farer. One of the best-known animals in the Cetacea infraorder (which includes whales, dolphins, and porpoises), Rodhocetus had short limbs ending in webbed hands and feet. Its characteristics closely resemble those of land mammals, thus leading scientists to conclude it was part-way along the evolutionary transition from land to sea.
Pelagornithidae - If every letter in Pelagornithidae’s name was equal to a foot, it still wouldn’t equal the size of this massive prehistoric creature. Boasting a wingspan between 15-20 feet (5-6 m), Pelagornithidae were the dominant seabirds of most oceans and even brushed up with our earliest ancestors.
Titanoboa - Made popular by the Smithsonian Channel TV Show, Titanoboa is simultaneously the largest, heaviest, and longest snake known to man. Appearing during the Paleocene age just after the extinction of dinosaurs, Titanoboa was so muscular it crushed its gigantic prey to death with massive force. Its discovery was especially important as it showed Earth’s tropical areas were likely warmer than we expected.
Platybelodon - Nicknamed the “shovel tusker”, the Platybelodon looks like a modern day elephant with one major difference: its trunk. This strange prehistoric creature did not have a typical fleshy trunk but rather a flat protrusion comparable to an elongated duck’s bill. Scientists believe it used the shovel tusks to grasp tree branches and rip off bark.
Eurypterid - A combination of two of humans’ biggest fears – alligators and scorpions – Eurypterid was like a scorpion which, from one found fossil, could reach the size of an alligator. Primarily an ocean-dweller, this creature was not a true scorpion. Found all over the world, Eurypterid finally went extinct during the Permian-Triassic extinction event 252.17 million years ago. Most only grew up to 8 inches (20 cm) long, but the infamous subspecies Jaekelopterus was bigger, making it the largest arthropod yet discovered.
