Thousands of dead fish found floating in Australian River after mass killing
A massive fish kill on the Lower Darling-Baaka River near Menindee in outback New South Wales, Australia, is affecting millions of fish, officials said.

A massive fish kill on the Lower Darling-Baaka River near Menindee in outback New South Wales, Australia, is affecting millions of fish, officials said.
Videos shared Thursday by Graeme McCrabb show thousands upon thousands of dead fish belly-up in the river. The water is hardly visible at all through the dense layer of dead fish.
In a statement Thursday, the NSW Department of Primary Industries’ Fisheries division said it was aware of the “developing” large-scale fish kill.
“It is estimated that millions of fish, predominantly Bony Herring (Bony Bream) have been affected, as well as smaller numbers of other large-bodied species such as Murray Cod, Golden Perch, Silver Perch and Carp,” the agency said.
Boom and bust cycles connected to floods are common for the bony herring species, and there was a population boom during recent widespread flooding, the agency said. But a heatwave is exacerbating the current bust as water levels return to normal.
“Significant volumes of fish including Carp and Bony Herring, nutrients and organic matter from the floodplain are being concentrated back into the river channel,” the agency said. “The current hot weather in the region is also exacerbating hypoxia, as warmer water holds less oxygen than cold water, and fish have higher oxygen needs at warmer temperatures.”
DPI Fisheries said multiple agencies across New South Wales and the Commonwealth are coordinating on a response.
