Before Leave It To Beaver, Hugh Beaumont and Jerry Mathers teamed up to make a promotional film for Rose Hills Memorial Park. Here is the 1957 film in living color!
1949 Ford Motor Company sales motivational film starring four performers who went on to achieve fame or notoriety in radio and television.
Hugh Beaumont (1909-1982), who plays "Joe Thorne" in the film was a supporting actor in dozens of films, portrayed Brett Halliday's wise-cracking detective, Michael Shayne in a series of programmers for Poverty Row independent, PRC in 1946-47. However, Beaumont is best known for his portrayal of Ward Cleaver on the television series Leave It to Beaver (1957–1963).
Glen Denning (b. 1927) was cast as Space Patrol's heroic "Commander Kit Corry" when the live science-fiction adventure debuted on broadcasting March 9, 1950, as a Monday-through-Friday 15-minute show on a local Los Angeles station, KECA. However, Denning was replaced early in the show's run by former fighter pilot, Ed Kemmer (1921-2004), who remained with series throughout its run as "Commander Buzz Corry," Kit's younger brother.
Veteran actor, Ed Prentiss (1909-1992), began his career in radio and spent the last years of his six-decade career active in films, television and as a voice artist. He may be best remembered for his portrayal of the high-flying hero, "Captain Midnight," a role he essayed on the ether for seven years.
Former Northwestern University speech and diction instructor, Actress Hope Summers (1896-1979) was well past 5- when she made her television debut on the live, daily soap opera, Hawkins Falls in 1951. She made thirty-six appearances on the Andy Griffith Show during the 1960s (in earlier episodes her character was called Bertha), and five appearances on the post-Griffith spinoff, Mayberry R.F.D..

(Deb) Anyway, let's talk about some classic TV shows and, of course, still airs all over the world, maybe one of those shows that has never stopped airing all over the world and that's Leave it to Beaver. They just were iconic parents. I don't know any that had parents like them, it certainly didn't match my household. (Frank) Well, you had Ozzie and Harriet. It was kind of that way. But really even when went to TV but both David and Ricky were a little bit older at that time and of course, Ricky was trying to be a rock star. In Leave it to Beaver, you had a couple of brothers that were some years apart. Of course, the Cleaver family was that iconic family of the ‘50s. Dad got home and the only thing is you look at it now and say, "He got home and he never took off his jacket and his tie." (Deb) Well, he might put on a sweater sometimes and he would sit and read the newspaper and smoke that- (Frank) Smoke his pipe. (Deb) - beautiful pipe and he always just had words of wisdom. Who didn't want a dad like that? (Frank) June always had her little string of pearls. (Deb) Her little pearls. Her hair was always done and she'd be washing and cooking and doing all these things and she looked like she just stepped out of fashion, yes, really. Didn't match my reality at all. (Frank) No. Well, the thing is that was it. It was something to look at, to look up to maybe and say that's a way a family can be happy. (Deb) Right. They were happy. They were encouraging of one another and, yes, a lot of positive qualities. What we're going to talk about with this segment is the dad of that show, Hugh Beaumont. (Frank) He's from Kansas. (Deb) We don't make stuff up people. We don't have to. That's pretty amazing. I actually was blown away to find out he was from Kansas. (Frank) Why, I didn't know it either till somebody did the research on the story. When I got that story, I thought, "Really? I had no idea." (Deb) Really. I know. That's exactly what I thought. Seriously? Another amazing Kansan. Let's take a look. (Frank) He was the most famous dad in America and his character was the measuring stick for fathers for decades. The Cleaver household became the standard folks aspired to and remains a cultural icon. Even Rich Williams, guitarist in the band KANSAS, said he had a "Beaver Cleaver" upbringing, knowing that folks would understand the reference. On the now classic TV show, Leave it to Beaver, Ward and June Cleaver were the idealized suburban parents, Ward a white-collar professional and June, the pearl-wearing housewife. Their boys, Wally and Theodore, "the Beaver," were the focus of the show, learning life lessons and always firmly guided by a wise dad. Beaumont was a perfect choice to portray that dad. The Lawrence Journal World reported that he was born in Lawrence in 1909, though other accounts say it was actually Eudora. Beaumont's own father was a traveling salesman so the family moved often. Beaumont passed away while visiting his son in Munich in 1982. In addition to his acting career, Beaumont was an ordained Methodist minister. He once commented on his chosen professions that, “Sometimes my work as an actor presents a conflict with my ideals as a clergyman. I don't believe in the old saying that the end justifies the means, and no money that I can earn as an actor can accomplish so much good that I would feel justified in violating my ideals to earn it . . . If the question ever arises in a serious way, of course I would have to give up my acting.” Ward Cleaver couldn't have said it better.

Hugh Beaumont
Eugene Hugh Beaumont (February 16, 1909 – May 14, 1982) was an American actor and television director. He was also licensed to preach by the Methodist church. Beaumont is best known for his portrayal of Ward Cleaver on the television series Leave It to Beaver (1957–1963). He had earlier played the role of the private detective Michael Shayne in a series of 1940s films.
Biography
Early years
Beaumont was born in Lawrence, Kansas. His parents were Ethel Adaline Whitney and Edward H. Beaumont, a traveling salesman whose profession kept the family on the move. After graduating from Baylor School, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, he attended the University of Chattanooga, where he played football. He later studied at the University of Southern California and graduated with a Master of Theology degree in 1946. He married Kathryn Adams in 1942, and the pair had three children.
Career
Beaumont began his career in show business in 1931 by performing in theaters, nightclubs and radio. He began acting in motion pictures in 1940, appearing in over three dozen films. Many of these roles were not credited. He worked along with another future TV dad, William Bendix, who would star in The Life of Riley in the 1946 film The Blue Dahlia along with Alan Ladd. In 1946–1947, Beaumont starred in five films as private detective Michael Shayne, taking over the role from Lloyd Nolan. Later he acquired his best-known role as the archetypal philosophy-dispensing suburban father, Ward Cleaver, on the popular sitcom television series Leave It to Beaver.

Former Northwestern University speech and diction instructor, Actress Hope Summers (1896-1979) was well past 5- when she made her television debut on the live, daily soap opera, Hawkins Falls in 1951. She made thirty-six appearances on the Andy Griffith Show during the 1960s (in earlier episodes her character was called Bertha), and five appearances on the post-Griffith spinoff, Mayberry R.F.D..

(Deb) Anyway, let's talk about some classic TV shows and, of course, still airs all over the world, maybe one of those shows that has never stopped airing all over the world and that's Leave it to Beaver. They just were iconic parents. I don't know any that had parents like them, it certainly didn't match my household. (Frank) Well, you had Ozzie and Harriet. It was kind of that way. But really even when went to TV but both David and Ricky were a little bit older at that time and of course, Ricky was trying to be a rock star. In Leave it to Beaver, you had a couple of brothers that were some years apart. Of course, the Cleaver family was that iconic family of the ‘50s. Dad got home and the only thing is you look at it now and say, "He got home and he never took off his jacket and his tie." (Deb) Well, he might put on a sweater sometimes and he would sit and read the newspaper and smoke that- (Frank) Smoke his pipe. (Deb) - beautiful pipe and he always just had words of wisdom. Who didn't want a dad like that? (Frank) June always had her little string of pearls. (Deb) Her little pearls. Her hair was always done and she'd be washing and cooking and doing all these things and she looked like she just stepped out of fashion, yes, really. Didn't match my reality at all. (Frank) No. Well, the thing is that was it. It was something to look at, to look up to maybe and say that's a way a family can be happy. (Deb) Right. They were happy. They were encouraging of one another and, yes, a lot of positive qualities. What we're going to talk about with this segment is the dad of that show, Hugh Beaumont. (Frank) He's from Kansas. (Deb) We don't make stuff up people. We don't have to. That's pretty amazing. I actually was blown away to find out he was from Kansas. (Frank) Why, I didn't know it either till somebody did the research on the story. When I got that story, I thought, "Really? I had no idea." (Deb) Really. I know. That's exactly what I thought. Seriously? Another amazing Kansan. Let's take a look. (Frank) He was the most famous dad in America and his character was the measuring stick for fathers for decades. The Cleaver household became the standard folks aspired to and remains a cultural icon. Even Rich Williams, guitarist in the band KANSAS, said he had a "Beaver Cleaver" upbringing, knowing that folks would understand the reference. On the now classic TV show, Leave it to Beaver, Ward and June Cleaver were the idealized suburban parents, Ward a white-collar professional and June, the pearl-wearing housewife. Their boys, Wally and Theodore, "the Beaver," were the focus of the show, learning life lessons and always firmly guided by a wise dad. Beaumont was a perfect choice to portray that dad. The Lawrence Journal World reported that he was born in Lawrence in 1909, though other accounts say it was actually Eudora. Beaumont's own father was a traveling salesman so the family moved often. Beaumont passed away while visiting his son in Munich in 1982. In addition to his acting career, Beaumont was an ordained Methodist minister. He once commented on his chosen professions that, “Sometimes my work as an actor presents a conflict with my ideals as a clergyman. I don't believe in the old saying that the end justifies the means, and no money that I can earn as an actor can accomplish so much good that I would feel justified in violating my ideals to earn it . . . If the question ever arises in a serious way, of course I would have to give up my acting.” Ward Cleaver couldn't have said it better.

Deep Ellum holds a storied place in Dallas history. Starting in 1920 and reaching a crescendo into the 1930s, Deep Ellum became distinguished as a prime jazz and blues hotspot in the South. Artists such as Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson, Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter, and Bessie Smith played in Deep Ellum clubs like The Harlem and The Palace.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Deep Ellum was largely a warehouse and industrial district which started to attract artists to the cheap loft space that was available. Deep Ellum holds a storied place in Dallas history. Starting in 1920 and reaching a crescendo into the 1930s, Deep Ellum became distinguished as a prime jazz and blues hotspot in the South. Artists such as Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson, Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter, and Bessie Smith played in Deep Ellum clubs like The Harlem and The Palace.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Deep Ellum was largely a warehouse and industrial district which started to attract artists to the cheap loft space that was available. Former Northwestern University speech and diction instructor, Actress Hope Summers (1896-1979) was well past 5- when she made her television debut on the live, daily soap opera, Hawkins Falls in 1951. She made thirty-six appearances on the Andy Griffith Show during the 1960s (in earlier episodes her character was called Bertha), and five appearances on the post-Griffith spinoff, Mayberry R.F.D..

I was so sadden to learn of the death of Barbara Billingsley yesterday. I had gotten to know Barbara over the years through my management of Isabel Sanford. In the 1990's when "TV mothers" were all the rage, it seemed like every other week, Isabel and I would find ourselves on a plane or sharing a limo with Barbara, June Lockhart and Marion Ross in one combination or another. There were trips to New York together; there were television sitcom appearances together; there were talk show appearances together; and there were a ton of local charity event appearances together. Who didn't want a dad like that? (Frank) June always had her little string of pearls. (Deb) Her little pearls. Her hair was always done and she'd be washing and cooking and doing all these things and she looked like she just stepped out of fashion, yes, really. Didn't match my reality at all. (Frank) No. Well, the thing is that was it. It was something to look at, to look up to maybe and say that's a way a family can be happy. (Deb) Right. They were happy. They were encouraging of one another and, yes, a lot of positive qualities. What we're going to talk about with this segment is the dad of that show, Hugh Beaumont. (Frank) He's from Kansas. (Deb) We don't make stuff up people. We don't have to. That's pretty amazing. I actually was blown away to find out he was from Kansas. (Frank) Why, I didn't know it either till somebody did the research on the story. When I got that story, I thought, "Really? I had no idea." (Deb) Really. I know. That's exactly what I thought. Seriously? Another amazing Kansan. Let's take a look. (Frank) He was the most famous dad in America and his character was the measuring stick for fathers for decades. The Cleaver household became the standard folks aspired to and remains a cultural icon. Even Rich Williams, guitarist in the band KANSAS, said he had a "Beaver Cleaver" upbringing, knowing that folks would understand the reference. On the now classic TV show, Leave it to Beaver, Ward and June Cleaver were the idealized suburban parents, Ward a white-collar professional and June, the pearl-wearing housewife. Their boys, Wally and Theodore, "the Beaver," were the focus of the show, learning life lessons and always firmly guided by a wise dad. Beaumont was a perfect choice to portray that dad. The Lawrence Journal World reported that he was born in Lawrence in 1909, though other accounts say it was actually Eudora. Beaumont's own father was a traveling salesman so the family moved often. Beaumont passed away while visiting his son in Munich in 1982. In addition to his acting career, Beaumont was an ordained Methodist minister. He once commented on his chosen professions that, “Sometimes my work as an actor presents a conflict with my ideals as a clergyman. I don't believe in the old saying that the end justifies the means, and no money that I can earn as an actor can accomplish so much good that I would feel justified in violating my ideals to earn it . . . If the question ever arises in a serious way, of course I would have to give up my acting.” Ward Cleaver couldn't have said it better.

I was so sadden to learn of the death of Barbara Billingsley yesterday.
I had gotten to know Barbara over the years through my management of Isabel Sanford. In the 1990's when "TV mothers" were all the rage, it seemed like every other week, Isabel and I would find ourselves on a plane or sharing a limo with Barbara, June Lockhart and Marion Ross in one combination or another. There were trips to New York together; there were television sitcom appearances together; there were talk show appearances together; and there were a ton of local charity event appearances together.
What a joyous time; what a wonderful person to get to know; what an entourage we all made.
I never saw Barbara be anything less than gracious and friendly to anyone who approached her for her autograph or to talk about "the Beaver" or just in the day-to-day routine of business and life.
There are many highlights of my association with her, none the least of which is when she agreed to sit down and chat over a cup of coffee on my coffee shop cable talk series "Lemack & Company Live" in 1991.
Soon the entire interview will be available to view on RerunIt.com. In the meantime, we have hastily pulled together four minutes of clips from that interview, including Barbara's take on going against typecasting and speaking "jive" in the hilarious 1980 feature film "Airplane."

I was so sadden to learn of the death of Barbara Billingsley yesterday.
I had gotten to know Barbara over the years through my management of Isabel Sanford. In the 1990's when "TV mothers" were all the rage, it seemed like every other week, Isabel and I would find ourselves on a plane or sharing a limo with Barbara, June Lockhart and Marion Ross in one combination or another. There were trips to New York together; there were television sitcom appearances together; there were talk show appearances together; and there were a ton of local charity event appearances together.
What a joyous time; what a wonderful person to get to know; what an entourage we all made.
I never saw Barbara be anything less than gracious and friendly to anyone who approached her for her autograph or to talk about "the Beaver" or just in the day-to-day routine of business and life.
There are many highlights of my association with her, none the least of which is when she agreed to sit down and chat over a cup of coffee on my coffee shop cable talk series "Lemack & Company Live" in 1991.
Soon the entire interview will be available to view on RerunIt.com. In the meantime, we have hastily pulled together four minutes of clips from that interview, including Barbara's take on going against typecasting and speaking "jive" in the hilarious 1980 feature film "Airplane."

Veteran actor, Ed Prentiss (1909-1992), began his career in radio and spent the last years of his six-decade career active in films, television and as a voice artist. He may be best remembered for his portrayal of the high-flying hero, "Captain Midnight," a role he essayed on the ether for seven years.
Former Northwestern University speech and diction instructor, Actress Hope Summers (1896-1979) was well past 5- when she made her television debut on the live, daily soap opera, Hawkins Falls in 1951. She made thirty-six appearances on the Andy Griffith Show during the 1960s (in earlier episodes her character was called Bertha), and five appearances on the post-Griffith spinoff, Mayberry R.F.D..

(Deb) Well, he might put on a sweater sometimes and he would sit and read the newspaper and smoke that- (Frank) Smoke his pipe. (Deb) - beautiful pipe and he always just had words of wisdom. Who didn't want a dad like that? (Frank) June always had her little string of pearls. (Deb) Her little pearls. Her hair was always done and she'd be washing and cooking and doing all these things and she looked like she just stepped out of fashion, yes, really. Didn't match my reality at all. (Frank) No. Well, the thing is that was it. It was something to look at, to look up to maybe and say that's a way a family can be happy. (Deb) Right. They were happy. They were encouraging of one another and, yes, a lot of positive qualities. What we're going to talk about with this segment is the dad of that show, Hugh Beaumont. (Frank) He's from Kansas. (Deb) We don't make stuff up people. We don't have to. That's pretty amazing. I actually was blown away to find out he was from Kansas. (Frank) Why, I didn't know it either till somebody did the research on the story. When I got that story, I thought, "Really? I had no idea." (Deb) Really. I know. That's exactly what I thought. Seriously? Another amazing Kansan. Let's take a look. (Frank) He was the most famous dad in America and his character was the measuring stick for fathers for decades. The Cleaver household became the standard folks aspired to and remains a cultural icon. Even Rich Williams, guitarist in the band KANSAS, said he had a "Beaver Cleaver" upbringing, knowing that folks would understand the reference. On the now classic TV show, Leave it to Beaver, Ward and June Cleaver were the idealized suburban parents, Ward a white-collar professional and June, the pearl-wearing housewife. Their boys, Wally and Theodore, "the Beaver," were the focus of the show, learning life lessons and always firmly guided by a wise dad. Beaumont was a perfect choice to portray that dad. The Lawrence Journal World reported that he was born in Lawrence in 1909, though other accounts say it was actually Eudora. Beaumont's own father was a traveling salesman so the family moved often. Beaumont passed away while visiting his son in Munich in 1982. In addition to his acting career, Beaumont was an ordained Methodist minister. He once commented on his chosen professions that, “Sometimes my work as an actor presents a conflict with my ideals as a clergyman. I don't believe in the old saying that the end justifies the means, and no money that I can earn as an actor can accomplish so much good that I would feel justified in violating my ideals to earn it . . . (Frank) You want to start this one? (Deb) I will. That's nice of you to let me start this, Frank. I am lost for words. (Frank) Well, you know. (Deb) Anyway, let's talk about some classic TV shows and, of course, still airs all over the world, maybe one of those shows that has never stopped airing all over the world and that's Leave it to Beaver. They just were iconic parents. I don't know any that had parents like them, it certainly didn't match my household. (Frank) Well, you had Ozzie and Harriet. It was kind of that way. But really even when went to TV but both David and Ricky were a little bit older at that time and of course, Ricky was trying to be a rock star. In Leave it to Beaver, you had a couple of brothers that were some years apart. Of course, the Cleaver family was that iconic family of the ‘50s. Dad got home and the only thing is you look at it now and say, "He got home and he never took off his jacket and his tie." (Deb) Well, he might put on a sweater sometimes and he would sit and read the newspaper and smoke that- (Frank) Smoke his pipe. (Deb) - beautiful pipe and he always just had words of wisdom. Who didn't want a dad like that? (Frank) June always had her little string of pearls. (Deb) Her little pearls. Her hair was always done and she'd be washing and cooking and doing all these things and she looked like she just stepped out of fashion, yes, really. Didn't match my reality at all. (Frank) No. Well, the thing is that was it. It was something to look at, to look up to maybe and say that's a way a family can be happy. (Deb) Right. They were happy. They were encouraging of one another and, yes, a lot of positive qualities. What we're going to talk about with this segment is the dad of that show, Hugh Beaumont. (Frank) He's from Kansas. (Deb) We don't make stuff up people. We don't have to. That's pretty amazing. I actually was blown away to find out he was from Kansas. (Frank) Why, I didn't know it either till somebody did the research on the story. When I got that story, I thought, "Really? I had no idea." (Deb) Really. I know. That's exactly what I thought. Seriously? Another amazing Kansan. Let's take a look. (Frank) He was the most famous dad in America and his character was the measuring stick for fathers for decades. The Cleaver household became the standard folks aspired to and remains a cultural icon. Even Rich Williams, guitarist in the band KANSAS, said he had a "Beaver Cleaver" upbringing, knowing that folks would understand the reference. On the now classic TV show, Leave it to Beaver, Ward and June Cleaver were the idealized suburban parents, Ward a white-collar professional and June, the pearl-wearing housewife. Their boys, Wally and Theodore, "the Beaver," were the focus of the show, learning life lessons and always firmly guided by a wise dad. Beaumont was a perfect choice to portray that dad. The Lawrence Journal World reported that he was born in Lawrence in 1909, though other accounts say it was actually Eudora. Beaumont's own father was a traveling salesman so the family moved often. Deep Ellum holds a storied place in Dallas history. Starting in 1920 and reaching a crescendo into the 1930s, Deep Ellum became distinguished as a prime jazz and blues hotspot in the South. Artists such as Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson, Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter, and Bessie Smith played in Deep Ellum clubs like The Harlem and The Palace.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Deep Ellum was largely a warehouse and industrial district which started to attract artists to the cheap loft space that was available. One of the first was a 1982 "nightclub" called Studio D on Main Street featuring local punk bands like Stick Men With Ray Guns and The Hugh Beaumont Experience. In fact, the "club" was nothing more than an empty warehouse equipped with a drum riser, and a card table by the door to collect the $2 cover charge and home to empressario Frank Campagna.
Today, Deep Ellum struggles with high rents, zoning restrictions on businesses, and a perception of a high crime rate that has made people reluctant to visit the area.
Campagna soldiers on, now the owner of the Kettle Art Gallery. "Dig Deep" pays tribute to Frank's artwork in the form of the many wall murals he has created in the area and laments the destruction of those murals and many others as a Deep Ellum landmark is bulldozed to make way for yet another rebirth with the completion of the DART light rail line and it's two Deep Ellum stations.

Architect Hugh Hardy is the quintessential New Yorker. His irrepressible love of the city animates all of his work, and can be found in many of the city’s most beloved institutions. His new book "Theater of Architecture" gathers twenty of Hardy’s projects, both within New York City and beyond its borders, to frame a candid discussion about the collaborations, challenges, and strategies that gave rise to each project’s design.
