On my way back to my friend's home in the East Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota a wounded man ran down the sidewalk and hid in the bushes along Hiawatha Avenue.
Two officers with the Minneapolis Police Department arrived shortly after and stood by until an ambulance arrived.
According to statistics, the neighborhood where I stayed had a violent crime rate that was 44% above that of the national average, and was located only a short walk from the Little Earth of United Tribes HUD-subsidized, affordable housing community. The people who live here are members of First Nations tribes, and mostly Lakota Sioux.
Much of the violence is a direct result of the criminalization of poverty and addiction, intergenerational trauma, and the loss of cultural identity due to the effects of European colonization and industrialization.

Minnesota State Highway 55 (MN 55) is a highway in west-central, central, and east-central Minnesota, which runs from the North Dakota state line near Tenney and continues east and southeast to its eastern terminus at its intersection with U.S. Highway 61 in Hastings.
This route, signed east–west, runs roughly diagonally across the central part of Minnesota.
Highway 55 is 221 miles (356 km) in length.
Route description
Highway 55 serves as a northwest–southeast route between Elbow Lake, Glenwood, Paynesville, Annandale, Buffalo, Plymouth, Minneapolis, Mendota Heights, and Hastings.
Highway 55 begins at the Bois de Sioux River, at the Minnesota — North Dakota state line near Tenney. North Dakota Highway 11 is its counterpoint upon crossing the state line. Highway 55 continues east to Tenney, Nashua, and Wendell. The route has a junction with U.S. Highway 59 before entering the city of Elbow Lake. Highways 55 and 59 run concurrently for 11 miles until reaching Barrett.

Hiawatha
Hiawatha (also known as Ayenwatha, Aiionwatha, or Haiëñ'wa'tha in Onondaga) was a pre-colonial Native American leader and co-founder of the Iroquois confederacy. Depending on the version of the narrative, he was a leader of the Onondaga, or the Mohawk or both. According to some versions, he was born an Onondaga, but adopted into the Mohawk.
Hiawatha was a follower of the Great Peacemaker (Deganawida), a Huron prophet and spiritual leader who proposed the unification of the Iroquois peoples, who shared common ancestry and similar languages. The Great Peacemaker was a compelling spiritual presence, but was impeded in evangelizing his prophecy by foreign affiliation and a severe speech impediment. Hiawatha, a skilled and charismatic orator, was instrumental in persuading the Senecas, Cayugas, Onondagas, Oneidas and Mohawks to accept the Great Peacemaker's vision and band together to become the Five Nations of the Iroquois confederacy. The Tuscarora nation joined the Confederacy in 1722 to become the Sixth Nation.

Most folks head south for their spring break but I decided to visit the International Wolf Center in Northern Minnesota. My GPS sent me to highway 1 through Superior National Forest and I quickly discovered there aren't many people, cars, restaurants, gas stations, hotels, etc... on my way to Ely. As passenger railroads went into decline and America's highway system reached a new level of complexity, bus services such as Greyhound began to experience a surge in business. The Greyhound Escorted Tour promoted in this film proved highly successful with passengers from all walks of life signing up for multi-day trips to scenic destinations like the Grand Canyon and other National Parks, Washington D.C., New York, San Francisco, and other major American cities.
Greyhound Lines, Inc., usually shortened to Greyhound, is an intercity bus common carrier serving over 3,800 destinations across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Founded in Hibbing, Minnesota in 1914, and taking the name The Greyhound Corporation in 1929, the company has been based in Dallas, Texas since 1987. Currently, British transportation company FirstGroup owns and operates Greyhound as a division of FirstGroup America.
After World War II, and the building of the Interstate Highway System beginning in 1956, automobile ownership and travel became a preferred mode of travel in the United States. Along with a similar downward trend in public transportation in general, ridership on Greyhound and Trailways bus routes began a long decline.
The Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s had a connection to the Greyhound company. In 1955, the Interstate Commerce Commission ruled in the case of Keys v. Carolina Coach Co. that U.S. interstate bus operations, such as Greyhound's, could not be segregated by race. In 1960, in the case of Boynton v. Virginia, the U.S. Supreme Court found that an African American had been wrongly convicted of trespassing in a "whites only" terminal area and in May 1961, civil rights activists organized interracial Freedom Rides as proof of the desegregation rulings. On May 14, a mob attacked pair of buses (a Greyhound and a Trailways) traveling from Washington, D.C., to New Orleans, Louisiana, and slashed the Greyhound bus's tires. Titles II and III of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 broadened protections beyond federally-regulated carriers such as Greyhound, to include non-discrimination in hotels, restaurants, and other public accommodations, as well as state and local government buildings
Later in the 1960s, Greyhound leadership saw a trend of declining ridership and began significant changes, including using the profitable bus operations to invest in other industries. By the 1970s, Greyhound had moved its headquarters to Phoenix, Arizona and was a large and diversified company, with holdings in everything from the Armour meat-packing company (which in turn owned the popular Dial deodorant soap brand), acquired in 1970; Traveller's Express money orders, MCI bus manufacturing company, and even airliner leasing. Indeed, Greyhound had entered a time of great change, even beginning to hire African American and female drivers in the late seventies.

Extreme winds blow through the state of Minnesota with wind gust over 50 miles per hour at times in parts of central Minnesota today.
This latest round of the bitter blast of extreme winter weather is also bringing back the sub zero temperatures that are making many of the schools to cancel school again on Monday and the regions residents wondering when will it ever warm up.

Most folks head south for their spring break but I decided to visit the International Wolf Center in Northern Minnesota. My GPS sent me to highway 1 through Superior National Forest and I quickly discovered there aren't many people, cars, restaurants, gas stations, hotels, etc... on my way to Ely. So this road trip was a bit of an adventure for me.
I came upon the song "One More Cup of Coffee before the Road" by White Stripes while driving and thought it appropriate for my road trip video.

But that doesn't stop many people from worrying about flying. And flying long distances over the ocean, such as on a transatlantic flight, causes some people even more concern -- perhaps for good reason.
Medical emergencies are a danger on transatlantic flights because the airplane can be, at times, a long way from the nearest airport and medical help. A certain amount of danger involved if a passenger requires immediate medical attention, but aircraft traveling these routes carry medical equipment such a defibrillators aboard and have a flight staff trained to use it.
Regular passengers on transatlantic flights have an increased cancer risk because of cosmic radiation exposure at high altitudes. According to the BBC News website, passengers and crew who routinely make this trek across the ocean get an equivalent of 170 chest X-rays of radiation per year. This increases cancer risks. Pilots who are in the air throughout their careers have a higher incidence of colon, rectal, prostate and brain cancers. Female flight attendants tend to have twice as many occurrences of breast cancer as other women.
Long flights over the Atlantic can cause edema -- the pooling of blood in the legs that causes swelling in the feet, ankles and legs -- in passengers who sit in the same position for long periods. Getting up and walking around the cabin at least once an hour can combat this problem. Low pressure adversely affects blood flow is adversely and can cause edema. It is usually minor, but can become dangerous if the pooling results in a blood clot.
With the increase in distance from safe landing areas comes an increased danger should something go wrong with the plane mechanically. Mechanical problems that actually threaten a flight are quite rare, but they could happen at any time. Flying too far from the nearest airport, especially on transatlantic flights, can be a concern should a problem arise.

Jeff Johnston caught up with Bruce and Billy DiDonato from Truma at the La Mesa RV Center where the AquaGo installation is being done. When everyone arrived, Bruce’s Grand Design Reflection 5 th wheel was already in the service bay and ready for the work to begin.
Bruce said he has been RVing for about 2-½ years now and has owned the Reflection for just about a year. Needless to say, he is familiar with how regular RV hot water systems work and can’t wait to use the AquaGo with its Instant, Continuous and Endless hot water.
Scott Thwaits, La Mesa Service Technician and Billy DiDonato from Truma performed the installation in no time at all. Now, Bruce can’t wait to get out on his next RV trip in a couple of days and, try out the AquaGo… We’re sure he will be delighted.
Also on this week’s show, we revisit the Jayco factory and tour the assembly line to see what goes into building their popular Alante’ class A motorhome.
Then we join Jeff Johnston as he takes out the Alante’ for a few days and does one of his ‘real life’ reviews.
Later, we find out that the old saying, ‘you can’t have your salad and desert together’, or something like that, isn’t true any more. ,Evanne Schmarder proves that saying wrong, with her delicious Apple Pie Salad. Hiawatha Avenue Stabbing Victim
On my way back to my friend's home in the East Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota a wounded man ran down the sidewalk and hid in the bushes along Hiawatha Avenue. Two officers with the Minneapolis Police Department arrived shortly after and stood by until an ambulance arrived. According to statistics, the neighborhood where I stayed had a violent crime rate that was 44% above that of the national average, and was located only a short walk from the Little Earth of United Tribes HUD-subsidized, affordable housing community. The light rail tracks and bicycle trail share the old Milwaukee Road railroad route. Hiawatha Avenue is to the left of the tracks, and 26th Street is behind me.

On my way back to my friend's home in the East Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota a wounded man ran down the sidewalk and hid in the bushes along Hiawatha Avenue.
Two officers with the Minneapolis Police Department arrived shortly after and stood by until an ambulance arrived.
According to statistics, the neighborhood where I stayed had a violent crime rate that was 44% above that of the national average, and was located only a short walk from the Little Earth of United Tribes HUD-subsidized, affordable housing community. The people who live here are members of First Nations tribes, and mostly Lakota Sioux.
Much of the violence is a direct result of the criminalization of poverty and addiction, intergenerational trauma, and the loss of cultural identity due to the effects of European colonization and industrialization.
