Water was placed in a pressure vessel. Pressurized air at 90 PSI was added on top of the water and the chamber was briefly shaken. 20 minutes later the air was slowly released. The water was allowed to sit for 20 additional minutes and then carefully poured into a jar (shown). A dissolved oxygen measurement was taken and indicated a content of 153% saturation for water at this temperature (20.5 C). An additional 5 minutes were allowed to pass. A stick was placed into the water to induce nucleation.

Instruments: -Winkler bottle -calibrated pipette -Erlenmeyer flask -volumetric pipette -propipette CHEMICALS: -manganese sulfate -potassium iodide -concentrated sulfuric acid -sodium thiosulfate -starch solution PROCEDURE: -We have used the Winkler method to determine dissolved oxygen in tapped water -a sample Winkler bottle is filled completely with water. -the dissolved oxygen in the sample is "fixed" by adding manganese sulfate and potassium iodide -the sample is mixed by inverting several times and checked for air bubbles -then concentrated sulfuric acid is added via a pipette and inverted several times to dissolve the floc -after leaving the solution settle in the Winkler bottle, solution is pipetted with volumetric pipette to Erlenmeyer flask -we titrated our sample with solution of sodium thiosulfate to a pale straw color -we added starch solution so a blue color forms and titrated again until the sample turns clear -we calculated the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the sample by formula using the number of milliliters of titrant sodium thiosulfate.

This video shows a quick experiment controlling dissolved oxygen. The Open Source Bio Transmitter (PN 555001) has an Arduino compatible open source board inside. This board is running a simple computer program to control the dissolved oxygen with an "if" statement. Due to the flexibility of the open source board an advanced PID loop could be written to control dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity or temperature. The transmitter was designed for STEM programs and research projects.

What is Biochemical oxygen demand? A documentary report all about Biochemical oxygen demand for the blind and visually impaired or for homework/assignment. Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) is the amount of dissolved oxygen needed by aerobic biological organisms in a body of water to break down organic material present in a given water sample at certain temperature over a specific time period. The term also refers to a chemical procedure for determining this amount. This is not a precise quantitative test, although it is widely used as an indication of the organic quality of water. The BOD value is most commonly expressed in milligrams of oxygen consumed per litre of sample during 5 days of incubation at 20 °C and is often used as a robust surrogate of the degree of organic pollution of water.
