A close encounter with a hauntingly beautiful tabular iceberg off Baffin Island, Navy Board Inlet (between Bylot and Baffin Islands). Tabular icebergs are flat slabs that have carved off glaciers - in this case further north, possibly from Lancaster Sound, but more likely from the 16 or so outlet glaciers lying to the north of Navy Inlet and on Baffin Island's East coast (this publication details the glaciers there: http://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/p1386j/baffinisland/baffin-lores.pdf)
The iceberg is in the 'large' category (so the second biggest of the official sizes) - it must be about 1KM long and is about 80 metres or so high - containing at least ten million tons of slowly melting ice. It seemed grounded in the relatively shallow Navy Board Inlet but must have floated here from at least fifty miles further north where it broke off the glacier. The compressed snow in this iceberg is 15,000 years old and a remnant from the last ice age!
The polar bear mother and cub were seen further south on pack ice about 40km from shore. They were interested in us but we were in the safety of the big ship!
Filmed on expedition from the cruise ship, Akademik Ioffe, in August 2014, with Mark Carwardine Adventures: http://www.markcarwardine.com/holidays-with-mark.html

Baffin Island... in the Canadian territory of Nunavut, is the largest island in Canada and the fifth largest island in the world. Its area is 507,451 km2 (195,928 sq mi) and its population is about 11,000 (2007 estimate). Named after English explorer William Baffin, it is likely that the island was known to Pre-Columbian Norse explorers from Greenland and Iceland and may be the location of Helluland, spoken of in the Icelandic sagas (the Grœnlendinga saga and the Saga of Erik the Red, Eiríks saga rauða)...
Iqaluit, the capital of Nunavut, is located on the southeastern coast. Until 1987, the town shared the name Frobisher Bay with the bay on which it is located.

Joseph-Elzéar Bernier (January 1, 1852 -- December 26, 1934) was a Quebec mariner who led expeditions into the Canadian Arctic in the early 20th century.
He was born in L'Islet, Quebec, the son of Captain Thomas Bernier and Célinas Paradis. At the age of 14, he became a cabin boy on his father's ship. Three years later, he became captain of his own ship and commanded sailing ships for the next 25 years. Bernier was named governor for the jail at Quebec City in 1895. From 1904 to 1911, he explored the Arctic archipelago on annual voyages in his ship the CGS Arctic and officially claimed the islands for Canada. Bernier retrieved documents that had been stored in caches by earlier Arctic explorers. He also established Royal Canadian Mounted Police posts in the Canadian north. During World War I, Bernier commanded a ship which transported mail along the eastern coast and carried goods in convoys across the Atlantic. He returned to patrolling the arctic after the war's end, continuing until his retirement in 1925. Bernier died of a heart attack in Lévis at the age of 82.
He published "Master Mariner and Explorer: A Narrative of Sixty Years at Sea" ... in 1939.

Nunavut Baffin Island

The author spent four months in Baffin Island during 1953 as zoologist on a big expedition by the Arctic Institute of North America, where he concentrated on studying birds and mammals. With Inuit hunter Samo he travelled by dog-sledge on the sea-ice of coast and fjord. Afterwards he crossed the mountains alone in deep snow to reach the site of his summer camp in a valley among some of the most spectacular peaks in the world. There he worked for most of the summer, usually alone. The valley and others nearby were and still are uninhabited, and expedition members trod many places which had not been under human foot in recent centuries. His book is of special interest because of the many changes since, with the Inuit now mostly in towns with modern facilities and airports, and using motor sledges for hunting. The author writes of many exciting days studying arctic animals, sometimes working with Swiss botanist Fritz Schwarzenbach and others, and walking with heavy loads, sometimes in risky conditions. The beauty of the Arctic inspired and energised him. He writes vividly about the magnificent landscape, the 24-hour daylight, the endless variety of weather, snow and ice, the wonderful plants and animals in the brief summer of the far north.

In this new book from photographer and mountaineer Alastair Lee, panoramic photos reveal Baffin Island's astonishing landscapes, and chronicle top British climber Leo Houlding's ambitious expedition to climb the north face of the incredible Mount Asgard.Deep in the Canadian Arctic, Baffin Island is one of the most spectacular places in the world. For most of the year the fjords are filled with frozen sea ice, but for a short period in the summer the ice melts and with 24 hours of daylight the area becomes a climber's paradise, with mile high granite walls and amazing scenery. From the magic of the Aurora Borealis, 2am sunrises on the massive twin towers to the freezing bivouacs on the 1000m wall itself, this book covers the epic journey to the mountain, and the eventual twelve day ascent of the wall itself. The journey is also told through individual accounts from each member of the eight-man expedition team.

Daring Viking seafarers used ships like this modern replica to reach the New World in their search for furs, walrus ivory, and trading partners—which they may have found in the native Dorset people.

A video with air traffic control soundtrack: A B747 takes off from San Francisco International Airport, passing the industrial city of South San Francisco and west of the San Francisco shoreline, before turning northeast for a view of the city's downtown towers, the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, Mount Diablo, the Sacramento Delta, Lake Tahoe, Donner Lake, and Reno.
The flight continues on its northeasterly heading over northern Nevada, southeastern Idaho, and Montana into Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Hudson Bay, northern Quebec and Baffin Island.
At daybreak, the flight heads southeast above the North Atlantic between Greenland and southwest of Iceland. It enters the "Shamrock" of Shannon and the "Scottish" of Prestwick air traffic control zones covering air traffic bound for London.
Descent begins over north and east London, affording views of central London landmarks, such as the London Eye and the Westminster Palace (UK Parliament) along the River Thames, before landing to the west on Heathrow Airport's runway 27L.
This video replaces a previously-uploaded two-part video of this flight, where Part One experienced a You Tube-induced issue of occasional image-blackout. The entire flight is now on this one video.

IN THE FIELD:
Caley Bedore follows the #PinkShirtDay No Bullying message all the way to Prince of Wales school where the KIDS are sharing the message loud and clear!
DAILY TECH :
Jeremy Biden… and a mystery item. He claims it’s from his “bag of tricks”. This has to be good!
SPECIAL GUESTS:
Members of The Red Hot Chilli Pipers of Scotland join us for a couple of minutes of bag piping music in advance of their #bagrock performance at The Venue in Peterborough tonight! Their only Canadian stop on this tour!
DAILY PARENT:
Ann Douglas bring the latest research on Bullying from Debra Pepler from York University. Bullying is a relationship problem. When relationships break down for whatever reason (people don’t have the skills to do relationship repair, there’s a lack of empathy, children/adults are struggling in other ways), bullying occurs. We’ll get advice on signs of bullying AND how to help repair the relationships that contribute to it.
BUSINESS 9-1-1:
Policy Analyst and Communications Specialist Sandra Dueck with the scoop on Peterborough Chamber’s hosting of Premier Kathleen Wynne this spring.
ROUNDTABLE:
History and Geography and Science and Geology all rolled into one as we welcome Steve Wesley, President of the Kawartha Rock and Fossil Club. The Peterborough Gem, Mineral & Fossil show is on this weekend at Evinrude Centre. Steve brings in some local fossils of interests and artefacts from 1577 and the first planned pre=fabricated town site in North America (near Baffin Island and backed by the Queen!) Peter Szarka is an expert in Zeolites … and promises to bring one tonight!

A Conversation with Norman Hallendy: Carolyn Wyland
Carolyn H. Wyland received a BA in Biology and and a Master of Public Administration degree and retired in l997 after a career as a senior budget and program analyst for the State of North Carolina.
She has had a love affair with nature and the arts since childhood and is a photographer, ceramist, jeweler, and glass artist. After realizing that few artists can afford to have films made about their lives, she has recently embarked on a new career in filming documentaries about them.
After becoming friends with Norman Hallendy, one of ten esteemed guest speakers, at the 1999 Nunavut Conference at Duke University, she traveled to Baffin Island in 2000. Mr. Hallendy showed her the area around Cape Dorset while he described the land and its people by using words and phrases learned from his studies with the Inuit. The following quote from his presentation at Duke University continues to impact her use of words and images to communicate:
" There can be no thought without an image. How many images have I missed because of not knowing the words."

The People's Health Movement (PHM) Canada & USA is talking to activists activists who are out working on the ground, in our communities, to talk about their work in climate justice to raise awareness about the social and health impacts of climate change and to mobilize communities toward achieving climate justice.
The effects of climate change on our environment are evident, and efforts to combat climate change must take into account social and health impacts people face everyday. Join us for a discussion with physicians Courtney Howard of Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment and Maureen McCue of Physicians for Social Responsibility as they talk about their work as doctors who have become passionate about fighting climate change.
More about the panelists:
Dr. Courtney Howard, MD, CCFP-EM is a BC-born Emergency Physician, mom, writer, dancer, and global health enthusiast who lives in Yellowknive. Six months of work on a Médecines Sans Frontières pediatric malnutrition project in Balballa Slum, Djibouti left her inspired by human courage and furious with desire to work for a more humane world. Returning to Canada, she found herself on Baffin Island learning from elders how changing ice conditions pose challenges to traditional food-gathering. Now a Yellowkinver, Courtney realized she could impact the health of African toddlers, Northern Elders, and her own two little girls in one fell swoop by channeling the Lancet and communicating that climate change is not only the "biggest global threat of our time", but that "tackling climate change is the greatest opportunity for global health". To this end, she engages in climate-health advocacy at the local, national, and international levels. Research-wise, she published "FLOW-Finding Lasting Options for Women: a Multicentre randomized controlled trial comparing tampons with menstrual cups" and is participating in "SOS-Summer of Smoke", a study into the health effects of the Northwest Territories' 2014 extreme wildfire season, under the direction of CAPE Honorary Board Member (and her ultimate hero!) Dr. James Orbinski.
Dr. Maureen McCue has traveled, consulted, and worked extensively as a physician, researcher, and peace maker. She is a founding member, faculty, and former director of the University of Iowa Global Health Studies Program as well as a founding board member for the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights. As an adjunct Clinical Professor in the Colleges of Public Health and of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Dr. McCue teaches a variety of Health and Human Rights topics including Global Health and Climate Change. She coordinates the Iowa Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility, addressing the gravest threats to human health and survival, specifically the threat of climate disruption and nuclear proliferation. Endeavors in each arena have focused broadly on the human right to health within a sustainable, life-supporting environment.
