I often get asked how to mount and balance a tire with tools at home and the truth is that's WAYYY too hard. It's much better and easier to use the equipment that was designed for it. In this video I show exactly that, how to use the proper equipment to mount and balance a tire. It's not terribly exciting but I do show some things that are necessary when performing this work on an aluminum wheel. You MUST clean the bead area before you mount a new tire onto an aluminum wheel or else it will forever leak at the bead. I say this because all too often I see a tire that leaks air that's just been installed where the rim was not cleaned. Enough of my soap box. Also this video only covers the 'basic' tire mount and balance. When it comes to low profile or large tires it's a bit more complicated. As far as tires go these are pretty easy and straightforward.

How do you know when the tires on your car are due for wheel balancing or wheel alignment? Does the steering wheel in your car shake and shimmy from side to side while you are driving? Does the shimmy get worse the faster you drive? Can you drive out of the shimmy?
"How often should you have the tires and wheels balanced on your vehicle?"
I like to rotate and balance my tires about every 3 oil changes, so about every 12,000 miles of driving. Tires are pretty expensive these days so I want to make sure I take care of them and get the most life out of them that I can.
The "new" rule of thumb is to place your newest and best tires on the rear of the vehicle, so you have more traction and control during wet weather stopping on curves. If the rear tires are worn out and do not have much traction to them your vehicle could hydroplane if you were to make a panic stop in wet weather while driving around a bend or a curve in the road.
"How often should you get the front end aligned in your vehicle?"
There really is no set in stone answer here. It can depend on many things, like how many curbs or pot holes you have come in contact with? How is the alignment doing, is there a pull to one side? Is there excessive tire wear going on, which is worse on just 1 or 2 tires?
I personally like to align the wheels (4 wheel alignment) on my cars about every 25,000 miles unless I have a problem or experience an issue like I talked about above. Most vehicles these days will use a 4 wheel alignment machine which is laser guided.
Most shimmies, shaking or steering wheel vibrations are NOT due to a wheel alignment issue but rather a wheel BALANCE issue. If you can drive out of the tire shimmy, say it starts to shimmy at 50mph but at 60mph it is better or gone...its usually a wheel balancing issue that needs to be addressed.

As the tire spins up, the bbs find the light spots in the balance and stick there because of centrifugal force.
I've had these on for over 2000 freeway miles and can report that this does in fact work! If you start on a curve, or hit a big bump, the bbs lose their balance and it takes a minute or two for them to get back into balance.
if you’re looking for a dirt-cheap way to balance tires, and don’t mind waiting for the tires to balance themselves every once in awhile, This method is for you!

Tire balance
Tire balance, also referred to as tire unbalance or imbalance, describes the distribution of mass within an automobile tire or the entire wheel (including the rim) to which it is attached.
When the wheel rotates, asymmetries of mass may cause it to hop or wobble, which can cause ride disturbances, usually vertical and lateral vibrations. It can also result in a wobbling of the steering wheel or of the entire vehicle. The ride disturbance, due to unbalance, usually increases with speed. Vehicle suspensions can become excited by unbalance forces when the speed of the wheel reaches a point that its rotating frequency equals the suspension’s resonant frequency.
Tires are balanced in factories and repair shops by two methods: static balancers and dynamic balancers. Tires with high unbalance forces are downgraded or rejected. When tires are fitted to wheels at the point of sale, they are measured again on a balancing machine, and correction weights are applied to counteract the combined effect of the tire and wheel unbalance. After sale, tires may be rebalanced if driver perceives excessive vibration.

I often get asked how to mount and balance a tire with tools at home and the truth is that's WAYYY too hard. It's much better and easier to use the equipment that was designed for it. In this video I show exactly that, how to use the proper equipment to mount and balance a tire. It's not terribly exciting but I do show some things that are necessary when performing this work on an aluminum wheel. You MUST clean the bead area before you mount a new tire onto an aluminum wheel or else it will forever leak at the bead. I say this because all too often I see a tire that leaks air that's just been installed where the rim was not cleaned. Enough of my soap box. Also this video only covers the 'basic' tire mount and balance. When it comes to low profile or large tires it's a bit more complicated. As far as tires go these are pretty easy and straightforward.

How do you know when the tires on your car are due for wheel balancing or wheel alignment? Does the steering wheel in your car shake and shimmy from side to side while you are driving? Does the shimmy get worse the faster you drive? Can you drive out of the shimmy?
"How often should you have the tires and wheels balanced on your vehicle?"
I like to rotate and balance my tires about every 3 oil changes, so about every 12,000 miles of driving. Tires are pretty expensive these days so I want to make sure I take care of them and get the most life out of them that I can.
The "new" rule of thumb is to place your newest and best tires on the rear of the vehicle, so you have more traction and control during wet weather stopping on curves. If the rear tires are worn out and do not have much traction to them your vehicle could hydroplane if you were to make a panic stop in wet weather while driving around a bend or a curve in the road.
"How often should you get the front end aligned in your vehicle?"
There really is no set in stone answer here. It can depend on many things, like how many curbs or pot holes you have come in contact with? How is the alignment doing, is there a pull to one side? Is there excessive tire wear going on, which is worse on just 1 or 2 tires?
I personally like to align the wheels (4 wheel alignment) on my cars about every 25,000 miles unless I have a problem or experience an issue like I talked about above. Most vehicles these days will use a 4 wheel alignment machine which is laser guided.
Most shimmies, shaking or steering wheel vibrations are NOT due to a wheel alignment issue but rather a wheel BALANCE issue. If you can drive out of the tire shimmy, say it starts to shimmy at 50mph but at 60mph it is better or gone...its usually a wheel balancing issue that needs to be addressed.

As the tire spins up, the bbs find the light spots in the balance and stick there because of centrifugal force.
I've had these on for over 2000 freeway miles and can report that this does in fact work! If you start on a curve, or hit a big bump, the bbs lose their balance and it takes a minute or two for them to get back into balance.
if you’re looking for a dirt-cheap way to balance tires, and don’t mind waiting for the tires to balance themselves every once in awhile, This method is for you!

How do you know when the tires on your car are due for wheel balancing or wheel alignment? Does the steering wheel in your car shake and shimmy from side to side while you are driving? Does the shimmy get worse the faster you drive? Can you drive out of the shimmy?
"How often should you have the tires and wheels balanced on your vehicle?"
I like to rotate and balance my tires about every 3 oil changes, so about every 12,000 miles of driving. Tires are pretty expensive these days so I want to make sure I take care of them and get the most life out of them that I can.
The "new" rule of thumb is to place your newest and best tires on the rear of the vehicle, so you have more traction and control during wet weather stopping on curves. If the rear tires are worn out and do not have much traction to them your vehicle could hydroplane if you were to make a panic stop in wet weather while driving around a bend or a curve in the road.
"How often should you get the front end aligned in your vehicle?"
There really is no set in stone answer here. It can depend on many things, like how many curbs or pot holes you have come in contact with? How is the alignment doing, is there a pull to one side? Is there excessive tire wear going on, which is worse on just 1 or 2 tires?
I personally like to align the wheels (4 wheel alignment) on my cars about every 25,000 miles unless I have a problem or experience an issue like I talked about above. Most vehicles these days will use a 4 wheel alignment machine which is laser guided.
Most shimmies, shaking or steering wheel vibrations are NOT due to a wheel alignment issue but rather a wheel BALANCE issue. If you can drive out of the tire shimmy, say it starts to shimmy at 50mph but at 60mph it is better or gone...its usually a wheel balancing issue that needs to be addressed.

As the tire spins up, the bbs find the light spots in the balance and stick there because of centrifugal force.
I've had these on for over 2000 freeway miles and can report that this does in fact work! If you start on a curve, or hit a big bump, the bbs lose their balance and it takes a minute or two for them to get back into balance.

This is longer than I wanted it to be. They say the devil's in the details, so for someone who's never used a manual tire changer, this may be helpful. My comments about not caring about the tires is because I put them on a vehicle that got driven straight to the scrapyard, not sold to another party. :) The first few seconds show quick snapshots of the process so you can see if it's has the info you're looking for. Anyone attempting this method of tire removal needs to know two things I left out in the video. YouTube does not allow annotations anymore so I can't put this info in the video. Read below: 1) If you use a shovel to break the bead (9:40), weaken the bead seal first before you try to break it. This will make it much easier to break the bead and much less dangerous because you won't have to jump on it so much. To do this, use the shovel to press down near the bead at multiple parts of the tire (like six or seven parts around the tire). You only need to use one foot to do this (but press down hard at each spot--don't hit the rim). Once the bead seal has been weakened, press down really hard next to the bead with the shovel (may have to jump on it as shown in the video--though very dang...

Anyone attempting this method of tire removal needs to know two things I left out in the video. YouTube does not allow annotations anymore so I can't put this info in the video. Read below:
1) If you use a shovel to break the bead (9:40), weaken the bead seal first before you try to break it. This will make it much easier to break the bead and much less dangerous because you won't have to jump on it so much. To do this, use the shovel to press down near the bead at multiple parts of the tire (like six or seven parts around the tire). You only need to use one foot to do this (but press down hard at each spot--don't hit the rim). Once the bead seal has been weakened, press down really hard next to the bead with the shovel (may have to jump on it as shown in the video--though very dangerous and not recommended) and the bead will break much easier than it would if simply jumping on it at one place repeatedly. In short, try to break the bead at multiple places, which will weaken the seal. Once the seal is weakened, the bead will break much easier.
2) When removing the valve stem (14:46), use a valve stem puller you can get on Amazon (shown in video--15:09). Since making this video, I have used this tool rather than cutting the stems out and it's a no-brainer. You can remove the stem with this tool in about thirty seconds. It's so easy. Thread the end of the tool onto the valve stem (will have to push the stem at an angle). Then rest the handle on the rim (use a rag to protect the rim if the tool doesn't come with its own rubber protector) and use the leverage of the tool to easily pull the stem out. Just to be clear, you will pull the stem out towards the hub of the wheel (towards the center of the wheel).

NEITHER PARTY LISTENS. I am so tired of all the animosity between our two dysfunctional parties and how nothing ever gets accomplished or changed for the better for “we the people.”. I am partly to blame and take responsibility. I wasn’t paying attention. I was busy working and raising a family. Shame on me. And, I think, many of you did the same.
