Dover High School (Dover, Ohio)

Dover High School is a public high school in Dover, Ohio and is the only high school in the Dover City Schools district. The school's athletic teams are nicknamed The Dover Tornadoes, and the school colors are crimson and gray. The Dover High School Alma Mater was composed by L. H. Alexander. Dover High School is also right across the street from the Dover Public Library.

Dover’s first school house was constructed in 1827 in a forested area on the south side of 4th Street (near the cemetery). There was a separate African American School on West Front Street until 1917, at which time Dover’s school system became fully integrated.

Athletics

Dover High School has a longstanding football rivalry with nearby New Philadelphia High School, having played 112 times since 1896—Dover currently leads the series 54-49-9. Dover High School competes in the ECOL (East Central Ohio League) and has eighteen varsity teams.

Dover High School is a four-year public high school located in Dover in Morris County, New Jersey, United States, serving students in ninth through twelfth grades and operating as the lone secondary school of the Dover School District.

The high school serves students from Victory Gardens, which has been consolidated into the Dover School District since 2010. Students from Mine Hill Township attend the high school as part of a sending/receiving relationship.

As of the 2013-14 school year, the school had an enrollment of 832 students and 72.1 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 11.5:1. There were 424 students (51.0% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 121 (14.5% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.

Awards, recognition and rankings

In September 2013, the school was one of 15 in New Jersey to be recognized by the United States Department of Education as part of the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program, an award called the "most prestigious honor in the United States' education system" and which Education Secretary Arne Duncan described as schools that "represent examples of educational excellence".

Dover is a borough in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,007 at the 2010 census.

History

James Joner purchased 203 acres (0.82 km²) in 1764 and laid out the town of Dover. It was known as Jonerstown until 1815, when it was officially called Dover.

During the 1863 Gettysburg Campaign of the American Civil War, Dover was briefly occupied overnight, June 30 – July 1, by Confederate cavalry under J.E.B. Stuart.

Dover was incorporated in 1864, 100 years after its founding.

The Englehart Melchinger House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Geography

Dover is located in York County at 40°0′14″N 76°50′58″W / 40.00389°N 76.84944°W / 40.00389; -76.84944 (40.003846, -76.849397),5 miles (8 km) northwest of the county seat of York. The borough is entirely surrounded by Dover Township.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,815 people, 770 households, and 489 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3,623.6 people per square mile (1,401.6/km²). There were 790 housing units at an average density of 1,577.2 per square mile (610.0/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 96.47% White, 1.05% African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.83% Asian, 0.72% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.43% of the population.

High School (1968 film)

High School is a 1968 American documentary film directed by Frederick Wiseman that shows a typical day for a group of students at Northeast High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was one of the first direct cinema (or cinéma vérité) documentaries. It was shot over five weeks in March and April 1968. The film was not shown in Philadelphia at the time of its release, due to Wiseman's concerns over what he called "vague talk" of a lawsuit.

The film was released in October 1968 by Wiseman's distribution company, Zipporah Films. High School has been aired on PBS Television. Wiseman distributes his work (DVDs and 16mm prints) through Zipporah Films, which rents them to high schools, colleges, and libraries on a five-year long-term lease. High School was selected in 1991 for preservation in the National Film Registry.

Wiseman made a second documentary on high school, High School II, based on Central Park East Secondary School in New York City, released in 1994.

Brooklyn Technical High School

Brooklyn Technical High School, commonly referred to as Brooklyn Tech, and administratively designated as High School 430, is a New York City public high school that specializes in engineering, math and science and is the largest high school for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the United States. Located in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, Brooklyn Tech is one of three original specialized high schools operated by the New York City Department of Education, the other two being Stuyvesant High School and Bronx High School of Science. Brooklyn Tech is one of the top 50 high schools in the United States and is one of New York State's top ten high schools.

Admission

Admission to Brooklyn Tech is based exclusively on an entrance examination, known as the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT), open to all eighth and ninth grade New York City students. The test covers math (word problems and computation) and verbal (reading comprehension, logical reasoning, unscrambling paragraphs) skills. Out of the approximately 30,000 students taking the entrance examination for the September 2011 admission round, (with 23,085 students listing Brooklyn Tech as a choice on their application), about 1,951 offers were made (the most out of any of the specialized high schools, partly due to its size), making for an acceptance rate of 8.5%.

Dover, Massachusetts

Dover is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,589 at the 2010 census.

Located about 15 miles (24 km) southwest of downtown Boston, Dover is a residential town nestled on the south banks of the Charles River. Almost all of the residential zoning requires 1-acre (4,000 m²) or larger. As recently as the early 1960s, 75% of its annual town budget was allocated to snow removal, as only a mile and a half of the town's roads are state highway.

Dover is bordered by: Natick, Wellesley and Needham to the North, Westwood to the East, Walpole and Medfield to the South, Sherborn to the West.

History

The first recorded settlement of Dover was in 1640. It was later established as the Springfield Parish of Dedham in 1748, and incorporated as District Dedham in 1784. Dover was officially incorporated as a town in 1836.
