I know what you're thinking
... "
WTF A READER RABBIT
GAME ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR
MIND!? SERIOUSLY!?
ISN'T IT ENOUGH THAT YOU ARE ALREADY DOING ALL THESE HE
GAMES!?" I will be perfectly honest with you -- I was never partial to
Reader Rabbit as a kid. I found most of the games to bland, generic edutainment games of little substance. This stood out as an exception to me though. I thought it was a genuinely clever game, and while it was educational, it didn't forget it was a game.
Sure, some parts may just be glorified quizzes (Like
Read and Reflect
Hallways and
Castle Journals), but I think the Skillways make up for most of that.
It's quite sad I haven't seen too much footage of this game on YouTube, because I think it actually deserves more than it gets credited for. The videos of it that exist do have a lot of views, so I decided why not go get another copy? And that's how this walkthrough came to be. I probably won't be walkthroughing another RR game because, simply put, I don't find any of the others to be that good.
Now, as for the walkthrough, I should mention I used
Virtual PC 2007 for this, which is why the sound hiccups are a little frequent. I tried VMware, but it breaks the platforming controls to the
point of near unplayability. I tried recording this off my main computer, but it's a 256-color game, and it didn't record right, even with HyperCam. So
Virtual PC was left as my only choice. Thankfully I'd say it worked pretty well, which is great because I would have had to pull out my OmniBook if otherwise! I think I should also say this is the initial release of the game. There's also the personalized version (which has footage on YT), and
Learning Creations' reissue. I grew up on the initial version, so that's why I went for it.
In this game, you control Sam the lion and traverse through three towers in Sir Drayson
Dragon's castle, in attempt to rescue Reader Rabbit. You go through several different activities in order to earn widgets, which are a way of tracking your progress. Here are the activities you go through...
Skillway:
Everyone's favorite, for good reason. They're loosely platformers, with several words and pictures scattered over the walls. There are 10 per tower, making it the most common activity. You're told only to look for a certain type of thing though. Occasionally, bonuses appear, but not until
Tower 2. I think I should confess something -- I don't know how to read more complicated
Roman numerals. I actually pulled out my iPod off-screen to check the numeral form before I went in.
Read and Reflect Hallway:
Let's be honest -- nobody liked these. You almost always get the same questions, sometimes ending up with the example questions! You're given 3 sentence, and you have to choose whether each of them or their underlined portions are one or the other (There's
Fact/
Opinion, Fact/
Fantasy,
Cause/Effect, and
Main Idea/
Detail). There are 4 per tower.
Science Factway: A glorfied R&RH.; You get pictures here, and you get a widget for completing it. Not much else to it. Due to the widget, though, there are only two per tower.
Runway: The first tower for this is a joke. Sam doesn't even run, he merely WALKS.
Anyway, you basically have to run through the shapes they tell you, because, you know, SECOND GRADERS
DON'T
KNOW THEIR SHAPES. Well, to be fair, it actually does get pretty fast by the third tower, but the controls can be a little too sensitive. You can only make three mistakes, and they don't cost you points if you make one. There are 4 per tower.
Castle
Journal: A once-a-tower deal. You're given a scenario, and you write about it. Or not, given nothing prohibits you from writing what you want to. You do get extra points for spelling right though, so typing in gibberish isn't going to do you much good. You can record your voice, but I'm using a VM, so I couldn't. As you can imagine, I had some fun with these, though I didn't go over-the-top to keep it kid-friendly. As an added bonus, you even get a widget!
Enchanted E-Mail: Another once-a-tower activity. It's basically like mad libs. You can choose to make your letter stupid, or you can make it logical (
Reader has reactions for both cases). I decided to show the "correct" ones for all three. You also get a widget for doing this.
That's basically what I have to say. I hope you enjoy this walkthrough, and have a nice look down memory lane.
