Its name cames from Mountains in Portugal, Serra do Marão, which rise to approximately 4648 feet . Genetic evidence suggests that it is very different from other Iberian cattle and consequently is not a crossbree

VILA REAL DE SANTO ANTÓNIO is a Portuguese city of the district of Faro, Algarve, created by Royal Charter 1773. In the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century the city lived prosperously. The fisheries sector has spurred the city, making it an important fishing and canning center. It was also an important port for ships that transported ore from the mines of São Domingos. Currently the city thrives on tourism. The Algarve culture has in Vila Real de Santo António an important center for dissemination. Here were born and worked several artists who left their mark in literature and the plastic arts. One of the best known is the folk poet António Aleixo (1899-1949), (00:04)famous by the irony and social criticism. In a roundabout in the city tribute is paid to this poet. Portuguese/Nat
The oldest red light district in South America is about to become extinct.
Plans to further expand Rio de Janeiro would mean the demolition of Vila Mimosa, a 200-year-old compound where two and a half thousand prostitutes live and work.
No deadline has been set for the disappearance of Vila Mimosa, but its tenants are determined to protect what they call an important part of Rio's cultural legacy.
Vila Mimosa is all that's left of what was once Rio's oldest prostitution zone known as "Zona do Mangue" (The Red Light District), dating back to two centuries.
The expansion of the city into the area reduced it to what it is today - a closed-in street with 53 houses and 19 bars.
The Vila remained intact until two years ago when the Cidade Nova - or New City - expansion projects were started.
And this time, Vila Mimosa will not be spared.
Should the Vila shut down, the 25-hundred women who are said to work here will have to find other means of survival.
Unofficial reports claim the city government has offered to remunerate the owners of the buildings in the area with a total of 100-thousand reais (approximately 107-thousand US dollars).
But the president of Rio's Prostitute Association says compensation is not enough for the years of service they've given to the area.
SOUNDBITE: (In Portuguese)
"We don't want compensation. First of all, because compensation does not buy dignity. Compensation does not buy everything we've done for Vila Mimosa. Vila Mimosa today, in spite of being isolated, (it) has become a historical part of Rio de Janeiro, well known in all countries around the world."
SUPER CAPTION: Euridice Coelho Reis, President of Rio de Janeiro's Prostitutes Association
Brazil's economic crisis has forced many women into prostitution - their only means of survival.
They roam the streets of Rio de Janeiro and other large cities to earn a living for themselves and for their children.
The prostitutes of Vila Mimosa say they're afraid they could lose custody of their children if they don't move out of the complex.
Coelho says they want to find another area of town to move the Vila, instead of shutting it down.
But the area they are looking at is privately owned and costs 600-thousand reais (approximately 650-thousand US dollars) - an amount which they cannot afford.
What will be the fate of Vila Mimosa and its girls is still to be determined, as neither side has provided a final solution to the problem.

"Maronesa" is a primitive cattle breed from the Trás-os-Montes region in Portugal, which closely resembles the extinct aurochs, the wild ancestor of domestic cattle, in several features. Its name cames from Mountains in Portugal, Serra do Marão, which rise to approximately 4648 feet . Genetic evidence suggests that it is very different from other Iberian cattle and consequently is not a crossbreed of other breeds like Barrosa Cattle or Mirandesa.
The breed region is circumscribed almost exclusively to the Northern Portugal in Vila real district. Since 2012, there is also a small herd in the Netherlands being used in the TaurOs Project.
The degree of primitiveness and Aurochs-likeness of Maronesa differs from lineage to lineage. The number of aurochs-like Maronesa herds is shrinking due to breeding for more productivity and selection against primitive traits. The bulls are usually much bigger than the cows and of dark brown to black coat colour. They bear a light eel stripe and a lightly coloured mouth. The head of the bulls is large and often has frizzy hair on its front head, the colour of that region varies from dark brown to orange. The profile of the head in Maronesa cattle is usually concave or more or less straight, the snout tends to be short. The body of the bulls is well-muscled and has a swung backline because of the strongly pronounced shoulder- and neck musculature. The horns are thick and swung forwards. The cows are considerably more gracile than the bulls, and are often much lighter in colour, although some cows have a dark colour as well. On average, Maronesa cows are reddish-brown while the bulls are dark brown to black, which is the colour also described and depicted for the European aurochs and some other primitive cattle breeds. Also the body shape as described resembles the wild ancestor of that breed. The udder of the cows usually is small to medium-sized and hairy. The dewlap is small to moderately developed.

The township of Ayamonte preserves its old medieval quarter in the central district of the town, with many very narrow streets and historical buildings; this central area is a designated car-free zone.
For centuries the ferry link between Ayamonte and Vila Real de Santo António was the traditional crossing point between Spain and Portugal. A modern bridge over the Guadiana River has now been built to the north of the town, linking the motorway systems of the two countries, but the ferry still runs and provides an inexpensive mode of transport between the two countries.
The beach area of Ayamonte is Isla Canela, and is reached by a causeway across the Marismas del Guadiana; the marismas (salt marshes) are an important wildlife reserve, providing a home to many waterfowl, including herons and flamingos. Isla Canela is built along several kilometers of sandy beaches, and provides an ideal area for windsurfing, kitesurfing and sailing. There are a number of quality golf courses in and around the area, including one built into the Marismas itself.
The city, is also famous for his local festivities, the "Fiestas de las Angústias" in honor of their patron "Nuestra Señora de las Angústias". The festivities in the beginning of September are a moment of celebration not only from the Ayamontin population, but also for many Andalucians, and Portuguese. The festivities are graced by the local band, "Banda Ciudad de Ayamonte" and the Portuguese "Banda da Sociedade Filarmónica Progresso e Labor Samouquense" from the Portuguese village of Samouco.
The Costa Esuri development is just to the north of Ayamonte. It was an ambitious development built by the Galicia (Spain) based developer, Martinsa-Fadesa that stalled as a result of global Financial crisis of 2007–08. Many properties were left unfinished, but because of the steep reduction in price, the development is starting to have the success that was always expected. The development features two golf courses, though only the west course is open. A hotel that was planned remains unfinished

Lagos is a municipality at the mouth of Bensafrim River and along the Atlantic Ocean, in the Barlavento region of the Algarve, in southern Portugal. The main town of Lagos (which includes only the parishes of Santa Maria and São Sebastião) has a population of approximately 22,000 residents, while the municipality supports a resident population of 31,048 inhabitants. Typically, these numbers increase during the summer months, with the influx of visiting tourists and seasonal residents. While the majority of the population lives along the coast and works in tourism and services, the inland region is sparsely inhabited, with the majority of the people working in agriculture and forestry. Lagos is one of the most visited cities in the Algarve and Portugal, due to its variety of tourist-friendly beaches, bars, restaurants, and hotels, renowned for its vibrant summer nightlife and parties. Yet, Lagos is also a historic centre of the Portuguese Age of Discovery, frequent home of Henry the Navigator, historical shipyard and, at one time, centre of the European slave trade. In 2012, travel website TripAdvisor, classified Lagos as the number 1 travel destination, on a list of "15 destinations on the rise" worldwide. In 2012 Lagos received the QualityCoast Gold Award for its efforts to become a sustainable tourism destination. Because of this award, Lagos has been selected for inclusion in the global atlas for sustainable tourism DestiNet. Lagos' economy, like many coastal towns in Portugal, has always been closely linked to the sea, and fishing has been an important activity since very ancient times. Since 1960, the city has embraced tourism, which has become its most important economic activity. It has beautiful beaches, good climate, the sea, a scenic coastline, and historical patrimony. The Marina de Lagos has 460 berths and has become an important centre for long-distance cruisers, and it is also known for its modern drawbridge.
Lagos also has numerous cultural and night-life entertainment venues. Lagos Station is the western terminus of the railway line from Vila Real de Santo António (via Tavira and Faro). The passenger train service is operated by Comboios de Portugal (CP). Connections are available at Faro for trains to Lisbon and Porto. The municipality of Lagos is located approximately 35 kilometres (22 miles) east of the Cape St. Vincent coast, along the southern coast of the Algarve. It is surrounded along its borders by the municipalities of Vila do Bispo (to the west), Aljezur (to the northwest), Monchique (to the northeast) and Portimão (to the east). To the north of Lagos is the road to Silves, the first capital of Algarve, Monchique (spa town/mountain), Milfontes, a coastal town and port/harbour of the city of Sines, that winds through the scenic protected landscape of the Southwest Natural Park (Costa Sudoeste Alentejana e Vicentina). Lagos is an ancient maritime town with more than 2000 years of history. The name Lagos comes from a Celtic settlement, derived from the Latin Lacobriga, the name of the settlement was established during the pre-Punic civilizations. It became an early settlement of the Carthaginians, who recruited Celtic tribesmen in their war against the Romans (the Punic Wars). Owing to its already important harbour, it was colonized by the Romans and integrated into the Roman province of Lusitania, becoming known as Lacobriga. Quintus Sertorius, a rebellious Roman general, helped by the Lusitanians of Lacobriga (who had been oppressed under Roman Generals and members of Lucius Cornelius Sulla party), successfully defeated the Roman army of Caecilius Metellus Pius probably at nearby Monte Molião. With the fall of Rome, the town of Lagos was occupied in the 6th century by the Visigoths from the Kingdom of Toledo and later by the Byzantines. The Moors arrived in the 8th century from North Africa, renaming the settlement Zawaia (meaning lago, or lake). It became part of the much larger coastal region of al-Gharb, which eventually became known as the algarve. The Moors fortified the town with Lagos Castle and established important trade links to Northern Africa from their bases in the Iberian peninsula. In 1174, the local Wāli gave permission for the Christian peoples to construct a church dedicated to São João Baptista, which was built outside the town's walls (becoming the oldest church in the Algarve).
wn.com/Lagos, Faro District, Algarve, Portugal, Europe

The Ria Formosa lagoon, located in the Algarve, in southern Portugal, is a system of barrier islands that communicates with the sea through six inlets. Five of these inlets are natural and have mobility characteristics. The sixth is an artificial inlet that was opened with the purpose of allowing easier access to the port of Faro. Presently the main inlet of the system is the Faro-Olhão inlet, which was artificially opened. The process started in 1927 but only in 1952 were the engineering works completed and it assumed the present configuration. Within the Ria Formosa system, different and sometimes antagonistic uses may be found. Part of the system is a Natural Park but Ria Formosa also plays an important role in the region's economy. Beyond the tourist use the system also supports other economic activities like seafood farms (including grooved carpet shell harvesting) and the port of Faro. The Ria Formosa is also a designated Natural Park of over 170 km² and a stopping place for hundreds of different birds during the spring and autumn migratory periods. The most important cities near the Ria Formosa are Tavira, Faro and Olhão. There are also some towns in this area, whose names are: Fuzeta (which belongs to the municipality of Olhão), Santa Luzia, Cabanas de Tavira (these last two belonging to Tavira) and Cacela Velha (which belongs to Vila Real de Santo António). Several buses run from Tavira to Cabanas and back each weekday, but there are no buses on Saturday afternoons nor all day Sundays and Holidays, even in summer. The nearest train station is in nearby Conceição which is on the Tavira to Vila Real line. That's about 1 mile /1.6km and an easy walk. Trains stop there daily, but at very irregular intervals of 1 - 3 hours. Little villages and towns in the area, such as Cabanas de Tavira, have a large number of bars, cafés and restaurants which run along the riverfront and are also dotted around a couple of blocks inland. Annually, about 30,000 species of birds can be observed from Ria Formosa, since the region serves as a migratory corridor and contains some the last remaining nesting grounds in Europe for some bird species. The coast of east Algarve has a remarkably mild climate, with sunny days all year round. Winters are usually mild and summers are not very hot. Because of these features, beaches in the Ria Formosa area are well known, like Vale do Lobo, Faro Island, Culatra, Barril, Tavira Island, Cabanas de Tavira, Cacela Velha and Manta Rota. Barril attracts a good number of naturists. Tavira Island Beach has a camping park.

The 5,500 square meters large southern part of the once proud colonial empire is Algarve, bathing all year in the sun. From the hilltops, moor forts look down on to the surroundings.
In the old towns, narrow roads lead up to the magnificent Manuel-style temples. The buildings are ornamented by Azulejos, moor painted tiles. The monuments and statues summon adventurers and explorers Magellan and Vasco De Gama.
The country is full of fishing villages, palm trees, vine arbors, olive tree orchards and orange gardens. The Praia da Rocha and the other sandy beaches are surrounded by large cliffs, stone arches and lagoons. On the hill of Monchique, we travel among pine trees and para oaks.
From the lighthouse of the Cape Saint Vincent, we can only see the endless Atlantic Ocean, which the medieval man thought to be the end of the world.

The Stone Museum is located in Mure town where the world famous Aji stones are produced. You can see the knowledge and techniques as well as the superb skills of masons here. In the museum, scenes of cutting, carrying and processing stones from the end of Taisho period to the beginning of Showa period are duplicated using dioramas with life-size dolls. There is a grass field outside where children can play and Over 1000 items which had been used by masons at that time are displayed for you to touch and hold.
This is part of a series of 1080p High Definition videos I shot while vacationing in Japan. I wanted to capture a sense of the real sights and sounds of Japan.
I shot this with my canon 7d and 10-22mm canon wide angle lens, opteka steadyvid pro steadicam handheld camera shake.
