In which John Green teaches you about World War II, aka The Great Patriotic War, aka The Big One. So how did this war happen? And what does it mean? We've all learned the facts about World War II many times over, thanks to repeated classroom coverage, the History channel, and your grandfather (or maybe great-grandfather) showing you that Nazi bayonet he used to keep in his sock drawer and telling you a bunch of age-inappropriate stories about his harrowing war experiences. So, why did the Axis powers think forceful expansion was a good idea? (they were hungry). So why did this thing shake out in favor of the Allies? HInt: it has to do with the fact that it was a world war. Germany and Japan made some pretty serious strategic errors, such as invading Russia and attacking the United States, and those errors meant that pretty much the whole world was against them. So, find out how this worldwide alliance came together to stop the Axis expansion. All this, plus Canada finally gets the respectful treatment it deserves. Oh, and a warning: there are a few graphic images in this episode. Sensitive viewers may want to use caution, especially around the 9:15 mark.

Today's show has key updates and information surrounding the story of devout Sikh and father of four Paramjeet Singh's arrest and possible extradition back to India.
APPEAL TO ALL SIKHS, GURDWARAS AND PANTHIC ORGANISATIONS TO DONATE TOWARDS THE LEGAL COSTINGS TO FIGHT PARAMJEET SINGH'S EXTRADITION CASE*
In relation to the arrest, detention and possible extradition of Paramjeet Singh, on 27th December 2015, a panthic gathering of Gurdwaras and Sikh organisations took place at Smethwick Gurdwara in Birmingham.
At this meeting it was unanimously decided that ALL Sikh gurdwaras and organisations have a joint responsibility to fundraise, lobby our MEP's and bring awareness of this matter, as it is an issue that affects the entire Sikh nation, especially those who are living in the UK on asylum.
Sikh Relief were nominated as the administrators of all funding that is to be collected for the campaign. These funds are to be used for Paramjeet Singh's legal case in Portugal. The initial outline cost could reach £100,000.
We urge all our supporters, gurdwaras and organizations to donate to this important cause so we can fight this extraction that the Indian government is requesting. It is important to remember that Paramjeet Singh's life is at risk should he be sent back to India.

Video transcript: A joint project by the design and engineering agency WeProductise and the PiP Store eco-3D print shop, wants to reinvent the ancient artisan tradition of Portuguese filigree by 3D printing a collection of individual artefacts using biocompatible PLA.
Filigree is an ancient kind of jewellery work and the art is believed to originate from pre-Roman times, as early as 3000 BC. It has spread across many different cultures throughout the world and in a way it can be considered an ancestor of additive manufacturing, in the sense that it creates jewellery by soldering new parts together rather than chiseling away at the raw materials.
Portugal -- where some believe the technique first originated -- has a long standing tradition with filigree, which culminated in the extraordinarily complex Portuguese filigree works of the 17th and 18th century.
Through the new digital manufacturing technologies, WeProductise is envisioning filigree designs for future generations, starting from the beautiful 3D printed artefacts that will be available in 15 different colours, each numbered to outline its individual features. The collection will be presented both online and through a series of events that will take place throughout Portugal until the end of June, writing a new chapter to the history of this beautiful multi-millenary form of artistic expression.

STORYLINE:
Leaders from Denmark, Finland and Portugal commented on Friday at the end of the second day of talks at the European Union summit in Brussels.
During the summit, German Chancellor Angela Merkel pressed European Union leaders to agree to the outline of a new treaty for the bloc and tried to overcome Polish President Lech Kaczynski's adamant opposition to new voting rules that he fears will diminish his country's influence.
On the second day of the EU summit in Brussels, Merkel met the British prime minister and the leaders of the Netherlands and the Czech Republic in an effort to bridge deep divisions of the proposed redraft of the bloc's unsuccessful constitution.
The chancellor, whose country currently holds the rotating EU presidency, wants to have the redraft accepted by 2009, believing the bloc urgently needs guidelines governing expansion if it wants to be strong and united and have a powerful presence on the world stage.
In separate talks, Merkel met Kaczynski late on Thursday night and again on Friday to discuss the new voting rules.
Poland still objects to proposals that it fears would reduce its voting clout.
Under the current voting system, 345 votes are divided up among the 27 nations, ranging from Germany with 29 votes to Malta with three.
Poland benefits already from the current system.
Even though it comprises eight percent of the total EU population of 490 million (m), Poland has a disproportionately high 27 votes - nearly as many as Germany, which has more than twice the population and comprises 17 percent of the EU citizenry.
Under the proposed "double majority" voting system, each EU country would have one vote.
To pass EU legislation and other measures, at least 55 percent - 15 members - would need to vote "yes" and the total of their populations must add up to at least 65 percent of the EU population.
"I think there is a strong commitment among all participants in this meeting to find a deal and to do it quickly so that we can focus our attention on issues that really matters in everyday life," said Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the Danish Prime Minister.
Meanwhile Matti Vanhanen, the Finnish Prime Minister hoped a final result would be found following the bilateral meetings Germany had with Poland and the UK.
Luis Amado, the Portuguese Foreign Minister was also "optimistic but we need to wait still some more hours to the final result," he said.

Travel video about destination Porto in Portugal.
Situated in the north of Portugal, Porto is a cultural capital of Europe and birthplace of the nation.
The Torre Dos Clerigos is the symbol of the city and was built in the middle of the 18th century on a rock at the city's most elevated point. Two hundred twenty-five steps lead to a stunning view across the picturesque old harbor town and its carpet of red rooftops that nestle against the city's hills.
Porto has one of the most beautiful markets in Europe that contains a large inner courtyard completely encircled by arcades.
The narrow, deep river valley of the Douro is spanned by 5 bridges of which the most impressive is the Ponte Dom Louis. The Frenchman, Gustave Eiffel, constructed the gigantic two level bridge that connects Porto with its sister town, Vila Nova De Gaia.
Five bridges connect the banks of the River Douro where 2 of them are monuments that date back to the Industrial Revolution. The river has always been the city's lifeline and a trading route to the whole world. The entire river valley was designated as a vine growing area because it is where the world famous port wine is grown.
With all of its picturesque districts, including its Baroque splendor and the palatial houses of its elite, Porto has truly survived the march of time.

Lisbon was the final stop of our European tour and we couldn't have chosen a better destination. The city immediately won us over with it's cheery pastel buildings, delicious fresh seafood, and it's unique mix of attractions. It also didn't hurt that we had clear blue skies the whole week we were there! The following video will highlight 20 things to do in Lisbon and we hope it will give you a few ideas of some of the sights this beautiful city has to offer.
1) São Jorge Castle (Portuguese: Castelo de São Jorge)
2) Miradouro das Portas do Sol observation deck
3) Carmo Convent (Portuguese: Convento da Ordem do Carmo)
4) Portuguese egg tart pastry - Pastel de nata (Portuguese: pastéis de nata)
5) Belém Tower (Portuguese: Torre de Belém
6) Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Portuguese: Monument to the Discoveries)
7) Jerónimos Monastery or Hieronymites Monastery (Portuguese: Mosteiro dos Jerónimos
8) Kiosk - Quiosque
9) Tagus River Ferry - (Portuguese: Tejo)
10) Salmão Grelhado - Portuguese Grilled Fish (Salmon Steaks)
11) Visiting Cacilhas Island
12) Lisbon tramway network (Portuguese: Rede de eléctricos de Lisboa)
13) Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara Observation Views
14) Shopping (Rua Augusta)

20) Lisbon night views
Our visit Lisbon travel guide covers some of the top attractions including the best in arts, entertainment, museums, nightlife and restaurants. We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities that you won't find in your typical tourism brochure or Lisbon city guide.
20 things to do in Lisbon, Portugal | Top Attractions Travel Guide:
Our first stop of the day was Sao Jorge Castle, which is an old Moorish fortification that sits on a hill overlooking Lisbon and the Tagus River. You can get some nice panoramic views of the city from here, and they also have peacocks roaming the grounds.
Miradouro das Portas do Sol is one of the many look out points in Lisbon that offers postcard-perfect views of the city. This particular terrace overlooks the Alfama district and it is always popular with tourists.
Carmo is a mediaeval convent that was ruined during the 1755 earthquake, and today it is used as an archaeological museum. It's a strange feeling walking down the ruined nave of the church and seeing blue skies above your head, but that's exactly what makes it worth a visit.
Another place to visit is Belem Tower. The tower was built on the banks of the Tagus River, and it was meant to act as both a defense system and a ceremonial gateway into Lisbon.
The Jeronimos Monastery is one of the most visited sights in Lisbon. It's one of the best examples of Late Gothic Manueline architecture, so have a close look at the intricate detailing when you visit.
A fun way to get around Lisbon's hilly streets is by riding the trams. There are different lines across the city, but #28 is the most popular one with visitors.
The Santa Justa lift is an elevator that connects the lower streets of Baixa with Carmo Square, and it is the only remaining vertical elevator in Lisbon. Though it is meant to serve a functional role, it is also quite popular with visitors who find the elevator a novel idea.
And that's a wrap for our week in the Portuguese capital! We hope you enjoyed this video and that it gave you some ideas of things to do in Lisbon. As always, if you have any other suggestion for travellers of places to visit and things to do around town, feel free to share them in the comments below. Wishing you happy travels!

Vacation travel video about destination Madeira in Portugal.
Funchal is the capital of the Atlantic island of Madeira and is situated in a natural, picturesque bay, surrounded by steep mountain slopes. With churches, palaces, mansions, museums and magnificent gardens, it is a city of both character and history. The Museum Of Religious Art is to be found in the former bishop’s palace. The sugar trade with Antwerp meant that paintings and other works of art could be used as payment. Madeira has long been famous for its wine, stored in wooden barrels to mature and then exported all over the world. In the old rooms of a former monastery, it is pressed, matured and celebrated. At the beginning of a valley, São Vicente lies hidden beyond the steep slopes of the northern coastline. The tastefully restored centre of the village contains a seventeenth century church with a Baroque interior. There are gilded carvings, tile pictures and paintings on the altar. At an amazing acute angle, the gondola from the mountain station below the village of Achadas Da Cruz travels three hundred metres down to the coast and back. This most beautiful Baroque church on the north coast was established in São Jorge. Its external simplicity gives little hint of its internal beauty: gilded wood carvings and illusionist paintings adorn the church and its altar. To the east of Madeira is the natural bay of Machico, the oldest settlement on the island. Today, Madeira’s third largest city extends from the coast to the hills of the wide and fertile valley of the Machico River whose inhabitants live from the cultivation of fruit, vineyards and fishing. Its extraordinary landscapes and exotic fragrances have been captivating visitors for centuries. Madeira, wild beauty amid the Atlantic Ocean!

Madeira - a part of Portugal - is an island near the coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. The island has a mild climate and its main assets are its legendary flowers and natural beauties. Madeira’s name is strongly connected with the wine and a handcraft of the same name. In the center of the Wine Company we can taste and buy this fantastic drink as well as take a look at its history. Vacation travel video about destination Acores in Portugal.
The Azores islands are located between America and Europe and set amid the Atlantic Ocean, nine islands each with its own special landscape. São Miguel is Gateway to the Azores and the largest and most densely populated island of the Azores archipelago with steaming geysers, the opulent green of the tropics as well as numerous monasteries and settlements. Terceira is located in the middle of the archipelago. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries its natural harbour was an important port of call for numerous trading ships and Pacos Do Concelho, City Hall, indicates the city’s former prosperity. To the east of the island of Terceira is Serra Do Cume, a giant crater about ten kilometres wide. The interior of the crater consists of fields and pastures in which dairy cows graze peacefully. São Sebastião is probably the oldest settlement on the island and was where the first Portuguese settlers set foot ashore. Threatened by pirate attack, the people built fortified churches, decorated in Gothic splendour. Faial, the Blue Island, is one of the most visited islands in the archipelago and whose marina is well known throughout the world. It offers spectacular nature with a rocky coastline and volcanoes. Horta is the island’s capital and since 1976 has also been the seat of the Azores’ parliament. With their authentic nature and harmony, the Azores islands are still waiting to be discovered. A paradise set in eternal blue with islands that hold the secrets of nature and an abundance of local pride. Evergreen jewels set amid the Atlantic Ocean!

Portugal. The 5 and half thousand square meters large southern part of the once proud colonial empire is Algarve, bathing all year in the sun. From the hilltops, moor forts look down on to the surroundings. In the old towns narrow roads lead up to the magnificent Manuel-style temples. The buildings are ornamented by Azulejos, moor painted tiles. The monuments and statues summon adventurers and explorers: Magellan and Vasco De Gama. The country is full of fishing villages, palm trees, vine arbours, olive tree orchards, and orange gardens. The Playa de Rocha and the other sandy beaches are surrounded by large cliffs, stone archs and lagoons. On the hill of Moniche we travel among pine trees and para oaks. From the lighthouse of the Saint Vincent cape we can only see the endless Atlantic Ocean, which the medieval man thought to be the end of the world.

The Angolan Civil War was a major civil conflict in the Southern African state of Angola, beginning in 1975 and continuing, with some interludes, until 2002. The war began immediately after Angola became independent from Portugal in November 1975. Prior to this, a decolonization conflict had taken place in 1974--75, following the Angolan War of Independence. The Civil War was primarily a struggle for power between two former liberation movements, the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA). At the same time, it served as a surrogate battleground for the Cold War, due to heavy intervention by major opposing powers such as the Soviet Union and the United States.
Each organisation had different roots in the Angolan social fabric and mutually incompatible leaderships, despite their sharing the aim of ending colonial occupation. Although both the MPLA and UNITA had socialist leanings, for the purpose of mobilizing international support they posed as "Marxist-Leninist" and "anti-communist", respectively. A third movement, the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA), having fought the MPLA alongside UNITA during the war for independence and the decolonization conflict, played almost no role in the Civil War. Additionally, the Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda (FLEC), an association of separatist militant groups, fought for the independence of the province of Cabinda from Angola.
The 27-year war can be divided roughly into three periods of major fighting -- between 1975 and 1991, 1992 and 1994, and 1998 and 2002 -- broken up by fragile periods of peace. By the time the MPLA finally achieved victory in 2002, an estimated 500,000 people had been killed and over one million internally displaced. The war devastated Angola's infrastructure, and dealt severe damage to the nation's public administration, economic enterprises, and religious institutions.
The Angolan Civil War reached such dimensions due to the combination of Angola's violent internal dynamics and massive foreign intervention. Both the Soviet Union and the United States considered the conflict critical to the global balance of power and to the outcome of the Cold War, and they and their allies put significant effort into making it a proxy war between their two power blocs. The Angolan Civil War ultimately became one of the bloodiest, longest, and most prominent armed conflicts of the Cold War. Moreover, the Angolan conflict became entangled with the Second Congo War in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as with the Namibian War of Independence.

Overview[edit]
Between 1631 and 1875 the fort was won and lost nine times by the nations contesting control of Kenya. The Omanis took the fort in 1698 after a notable siege of almost three years. It was declared a historical monument in 1958. Today it houses a museum.
The fort was designed by a Milanese architect, Giovanni Battista Cairati, who was the Chief Architect for Portuguese possessions in the East. It was the first European-style fort constructed outside of Europe designed to resist cannon fire. Today, it is one of the finest examples of 16th-century Portuguese military architecture, which has been influenced and changed by both the Omani Arabs and the British. The fort quickly became a vital possession for anyone with the intention of controlling Mombasa Island or the surrounding areas of trade. When the British colonised Kenya, they used it as a prison, until 1958, when they converted it into a historical monument. James Kirkman was then assigned to excavate the monument, which he did (with a large use of external historical documents) from 1958 to 1971.
The architecture of the fort represents the rough outline of a person lying on their back, with the head towards the sea. The height of the walls is 18 meters. The original Portuguese fort had a height of 15 meters, but the much taller Oman Arabs added 3 metres upon capturing the fort.
The fort combines Portuguese, Arab, and British elements; these being the major powers that held it at different times in history. The Portuguese and British presence is preserved in the presence of their respective cannons. The Portuguese cannons had a range of 200 meters and are longer than the British cannons which had a range of 300 meters. Oman Arabs marked their occupancy with numerous Koran inscriptions into the wooden door posts and ceiling beams. The Muslim tradition of 5 pillars is also portrayed throughout the fort, with a former meeting hall supported by five stone pillars to the ceiling.
Some of the historical structures still standing in the fort include Oman House, which was the house for Sultan who governed the East African coast. Others are an open water cistern by the Portuguese for harvesting rain water, and a 76-foot deep well sunk by the Arabs, but whose water was too salty to be used for anything but washing.
The fort was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2011.
Fort Jesus today
Fort Jesus is now a popular destination for foreign and local tourists. As well as a tourist destination the Fort is important as a host for numerous research programs, a Conservation Lab, and Education Department and an Old Town Conservation Office.

ABOUT THE SEMINAR
This is the presentation that accompanies the paper accepted at Seoul for the CHI 2015 conference. The paper investigates how current digital technologies are sufficient, or insufficient, in supporting Kenyan transnationals in practising indigenous knowledge. We first outline a view of indigenous knowledge, and then apply it to a study of Kenyan diasporans living in Australia. The findings are framed as nine techniques for sustaining displaced practising of indigenous knowledge. These appropriations suggest directions for technology innovation, providing design considerations for technologies that translate, formulate and support indigenous knowledge in transnational contexts.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Kagonya Awori is a PhD student in the Microsoft Social NUI research centre. She joined in November, 2013 from Nairobi, Kenya. Kagonya has a background in Human-Computer Interaction with a dual Masters from Carnegie Mellon University, USA and University of Madeira,Portugal. She has also worked on various UX research and design projects in Kenya, the States and Portugal. Kagonya is being supervised by Assoc. Prof.Frank Vetere and Dr. Wally Smith. She is keen on understanding how situated technologies can support indigenous communities in Australia and Africa.
All Welcome. Please forward to others who may be interested.

WATCH Greece could come up short on cash next week if the government can’t reach a deal with the Eurozone on economic reforms that would unlock essential bailout funds. Both the Greek government and its creditors have said they need to reach an outline agreement, at the very least, at their next meeting on April 24. But Greece has yet to produce a plan for reforms deemed acceptable. Boom Bust guest host Ameera David weighs in.
Then, Edward joins us after his attendance at a special Brookings Institution event where the finance ministers from Greece and Germany spoke, following the annual spring meetings for both The World Bank and International Monetary Fund. He tells us what Wolfgang Schaeuble and Yanis Varoufakis had to say and what this means for Greece and likely outcomes to that nation’s crisis.
Then, Ameera sits down with John Brynjolfsson – CIO of Armored Wolf. John tells us if Europe can sustain the triple digit debt loads in Spain, Italy, Belgium, and Portugal, given its anemic growth and he gives us his take on how the Greek government will decide between its domestic constituency and its international creditors.
After the break, Bianca gives us a daily news roundup on other headlines including a on earnings, Ben Bernanke’s new job, and a glitter-filled ECB protest by young but veteran German activist protester Josephine Witt.
Afterwards, Erin is joined by Rick Rule – CEO of Sprott US Holdings, Inc. Rick gives us his take on the future of the oil market and tells us if he thinks volatility in the oil market is likely to spike now that prices have relatively stabilized.
And in The Big Deal, Ameera and Erin discuss Delta’s decision to cut back on international flights.

Manly Palmer Hall (March 18, 1901 – August 29, 1990) was a Canadian-born author and mystic. He is perhaps most famous for his work The Secret Teachings of All Ages: An Encyclopedic Outline of Masonic, Hermetic, Qabbalistic and Rosicrucian Symbolical Philosophy, which is widely regarded as his magnum opus, and which he published at the age of 25 (or 27, 1928)
He has been widely recognized as a leading scholar in the fields of religion, mythology, mysticism, and the occult.
Carl Jung, when writing Psychology and Alchemy, borrowed material from Hall’s private collection.
In 1934, Hall founded the Philosophical Research Society (PRS) in Los Angeles, California, dedicating it to an idealistic approach to the solution of human problems. The PRS claims to be non-sectarian and entirely free from educational, political, or ecclesiastical control, and the Society’s programs stress the need for the integration of philosophy, religion, and science into one system of instruction. The PRS Library, a public facility devoted to source materials in obscure fields, has many rare and scarce items now impossible to obtain elsewhere.
In 1973 (47 years after writing The Secret Teachings of All Ages), Hall was recognized as a 33 degree FreeMason (the highest honor conferred by the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite), at a ceremony held at PRS on December 8th, despite never being initiated into the physical craft.
In his over 70-year career, Hall delivered approximately 8,000 lectures in the United States and abroad, authored over 150 books and essays, and wrote countless magazine articles.
