STORYLINE
Iraq's top Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali Husseini al-Sistani, left the southern city of Basra on Thursday and was headed to Najaf in a bid to end weeks of fighting between U.S. forces and Iraqi rebels there, witnesses said.
Travelling in an armoured car, al-Sistani left the city in a 30-vehicle convoy of sport utility vehicles.
The convoy had to slow down near Nasiriyah where crowds of Sistani followers were waiting to cheer their leader. Some supporters held banners promising "to achieve any order of Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani".
The convoy came to stand-still when Shia followers started to run between the cars looking for Sistani's armoured vehicle. The convoy later continued its journey to Najaf.
Al-Sistani, 75, returned to Iraq on Wednesday after spending several weeks in London for medical treatment.
The cleric wields enormous influence among Shiite Iraqis and his return could play a crucial role in stabilising the Najaf crisis, which has worsened in his absence.
Najaf Governor Adnan al-Zurufi declared a 24 hour cease-fire from the time al-Sistani arrives in Najaf to give the militants loyal to radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr a chance to decide whether to accept the peace plan.
"Immediately after that, the operation will start again if the militia disagree on what Ayatollah al-Sistani said," he said.
He also said that Iraqi and U.S. forces would temporarily pull back from positions near the revered Imam Ali Shrine to allow for peace efforts.
The 360 kilometre (220 miles) journey from Basra to Najaf could take five hours, as thousands of supporters are concentrating on the road, hoping to have a glimpse of their leader.
Al-Sistani had called for Iraqis to march to the holy city of Najaf on Thursday, but al-Khafaf said the demonstrators should stop on the edge of the holy city and wait for al-Sistani to arrive and give them instructions before entering.

"(Q: Did you see some tears in their faces, in their eyes?) Not today, yesterday yes, they were much better probably because they were coming home and so you know, their feeling was improving."

STORYLINE:
A military plane flew home a first group of wounded troops on Friday after a suicide bombing that tore apart an Italian base in Iraq this week and killed 18 Italians - a strike that horrified Italians whose military had previously been spared bloodshed there.
Senior military officials greeted some 20 wounded Italians on their arrival at Rome's Ciampino airport, which was broadcast on state television.
One survivor limped off the plane on crutches, while others appeared with bandages on their faces or were loaded into ambulances.
The bodies of the dead were being shipped home in brown wooden coffins on Saturday.
They will be laid out at the central Roman Vittoriano palace on Monday, with the public allowed to view the coffins over 11 hours.
The nation, in deep mourning since Wednesday's attack in the southern Iraqi town of Nasiriyah, is prepared for more distressing hours next week, when the state funerals occur on Tuesday at a Rome basilica.
That event will also be broadcast live on state television.
The Colosseum will turn off its lights on Tuesday, schools will observe a minute of silence, shops will close briefly, workers will pause for 10 minutes - even movie theatres will keep their marquees dark that day as a sign of respect.
The attack killed 12 paramilitary Carabinieri police, four army soldiers and two civilians.
Another Italian was wounded and has been declared brain dead.
Fourteen non-Italians were also killed, while more than 80 were wounded.
Italy's government has stressed that it will not retreat from its mission. And for the time being, Italians - who largely opposed the war in Iraq - seemed more determined to stay in the country.
During a speech on Friday, Premier Silvio Berlusconi defended the government's decision to send troops to Iraq, but said he had been opposed to the war and tried to persuade US President George W. Bush to change his mind.
This came as a surprise because Berlusconi has been a staunch ally of the US administration in the conflict.
Berlusconi said he also urged allies to "quickly build a system of self-government" in Iraq.
The Italian premier, while supporting Washington's military campaign against Saddam Hussein, did not send combat soldiers.
Instead, Italy contributed troops after Baghdad fell to help in the reconstruction, and now has a 2,300-strong contingent in Iraq.

The aim of my visit is to communicate you directly the appreciation of the Italian government and the country for what you represent here in view of the recent events in which so many of you were involved. You are at great risk and this is regarded in Italy as a proof of your ability to handle very difficult situations."

STORYLINE:
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi made an unannounced visit to Iraq on Saturday, making his first trip to meet with Italian troops based in the southern city of Nasiriyah.
The premier flew in early on Saturday, greeted surprised Italian troops, joined them for lunch, then left the country a few hours later.
Some 2-thousand 900 Italian armed forces are based in Nasiriyah. They are working on reconstruction projects in the southern Iraqi city, but as violence has engulfed the country, they have been involved in combat.
On Tuesday, Italian troops in Nasiriyah clashed with militiamen, leaving 15 Iraqis dead and 12 Italians wounded, but has largely calmed since.
An Italian soldier filmed Berlusconi''s surprise visit and the footage in this package are his pictures.
Berlusconi - wearing casual clothes and a baseball cap - chatted with soldiers.
The Italian soldiers hadn''t known about his visit on the eve of Easter Sunday.
The trip was kept secret for security reasons.
Berlusconi, a conservative ally of U.S. President George W. Bush, supported the US-led war and agreed to send troops after the conflict.
On November 12, a suicide truck bomb attack on Italian forces in Nasiriyah killed 19 Italians - the nation''s single worst military loss since World War II.

STORYLINE:
Several Iraqis in the southern city of Nasiriyah, where Italian troops are stationed, expressed satisfaction on Sunday over Rome's decision to reduce the number of soldiers in Iraq.
Nasiriyah resident Hassan Naser said, "We want the Italian troops to pull out from Nasiriyah, as these troops provide nothing to people. Thanks to God, the Iraqi police and National Guard are performing their duty well."
On Friday Italian Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema confirmed that the new Cabinet was sticking to the timetable of former Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi's government, to reduce the number of troops in Iraq from 2,700 to 1,600 sometime in June.
Although Italy was largely against the war, Berlusconi sent in about 3,000 troops after former leader Saddam Hussein's ouster to help with reconstruction and security.
Ali Abdel-Hussein, another resident, said, "They (the troops) have offered nothing good to the residents. No pavement of streets, No services. So if they (the Italian troops) pull out, it is better for the Iraqi people."
The Italian decision came weeks after their troops lost three personnel when a bomb blast rocked an Italian convoy near their base in Nasiriyah.

Two Italian aid workers, kidnapped in Iraq three weeks ago, arrived home on Tuesday night having been released hours earlier.
Simona Pari and Simona Torretta arrived on a private jet at Ciampino military airport in Rome shortly after 11 p.m. local (2100 GMT).
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who had announced the release of the two workers earlier in the day, was at the airport to welcome the women, along with relatives, friends and colleagues.
The two, dressed in long white tunics, smiled as they got off the plane.
They held hands as they walked on the tarmac, their relatives by their side.
Both appeared to be in good health.
"It went well, we have been treated with a lot of respect," Torretta told Italian news agencies.
The two Italians, both 29, were handed over to the Red Cross along with two Iraqis who were abducted with them in Baghdad on September the 7th.
The two women were working for the aid agency "Un Ponte Per ..." ("A Bridge To..."), and were involved in school and water projects.

STORYLINE
The imminent cricket world cup has again focussed attention on Zimbabwe, which is due to host several games that are under threat because of concerns among players about security in the country. Those concerns increased this week with the trial of opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader Morgan Tsvangirai for allegedly plotting to kill President Robert Mugabe. The world cup organisers say Zimbabwe is safe, but Zimbabwean opponents of the event say they were not consulted. MDC Member of Parliament Job Sikala, who was recently tortured by the police, is outraged that the cricket authorities should even have considered Zimbabwe as a venue. But many other people still believe that sport and politics shouldn't mix.
