WHY WAS BRUSSELS THE
TARGET?
Brussels is considered to be the capital of EU, apart from
Belgium since it hosts both EU and
NATO headquarters. So the attack, by targeting Brussels, gives a message to all 28
EU countries.

PARIS-BRUSSELs CONNECTION
Europe experienced the biggest attacks before this one in
Paris. The ones in January and
November 2015 were striking examples. Especially after
Paris attacks, it was found that one foot of the terrorism was in Brussels. The terrorists of Paris attacks were found to be organized in Brussels, and operations to catch them in Paris were directed to Brussels within this period.
WHAT CHANGED IN
EUROPE SINCE NOVEMBER?
After
November 13th attacks, Europe began to use the options of sealing the borders and suspending
Schengen area practice. A state of emergency law was enacted in
France, and affected the lives of
Muslims in France negatively in some ways. Brussels organization of the terrorist also came forward.
Soldiers were in the streets, operations were concentrated on
Molenbeek district where Muslims are densely populated.
WAS EUROPE WAITING AN ATTACK IN BRUSSELS?
In 15th of March, an operation was started regarding Paris attacks.
Information obtained from the suspects caught in this operation were pointing out to a new possible attack. According to this, the police and the intelligence had serious findings for a possible terrorist attack and expecting one.
WHY COULDN’T BELGIUM
STOP IT?
Belgium police and intelligence absolutely took measures after the findings referring to a new attack.
Actually, both in France and Belgium, serious terror alarms have been given and they were extremely cautious. But, despite all precautions, a new terrorist attack was made at
Brussels airport.
HOW
DOES IT AFFECT THE FUTURE OF EU?
The structure of EU is controversial after 2008 economical crisis. There were countries which wanted to be out; now
England is discussing its place in EU with a referendum.
Euro is not their currency and they are out of Schengen area. Moreover, borders are in a phase to be periodically and temporarily closed. Many countries adopt this practice lately. After Brussels attacks, EU will possibly enable some security options on
Schengen agreement.
EU PERSPECTIVE ON THE REFUGEES?
There are many
Syrian refugees waiting on borders, apart from Muslims living within EU for years. It is a troublesome period for both. After
Charlie Hebdo attacks, Islamophobia expanded especially with racist
PEGIDA’s contributions. After the November attacks, daily lives of Muslims were negatively affected. Now, the aggressive look will possibly become more and more aggressive against both Muslims and Syrian refugees who have dreams about Europe.
WHAT
BIG TERRORIST ATTACKS HAPPENED BEFORE
PARIS ATTACKS IN EUROPE?
In
Madrid, capital of
Spain, in 2004; and in
London, capital of England, in
2005, there were terrorist attacks in train and metro stations undertaken by Al Qaeda and caused nearly
150 people to die in total.
ISIS OR
PKK?
PKK is in
EU’s terrorist organizations list. However there are no enforcements against them and even there is support. PKK supporters can put up a tent in central Brussels; and the police and government back them up. Europe should not be a double-dealer towards terrorist organizations. If ISIS is a terrorist organization, PKK is another. Both should be treated equally and EU should change its policy of hypocrisy on terrorism.
CALL TO
UNITY AND SOLIDARITY
After the attacks in Paris, leaders of the opposition were on
Hollande’s side in
Elysee Palace. It was a significant message. After the Brussels attacks, EU, despite opposing voices, can call to unity and solidarity and give a message against terrorist attacks.
For the videos and pictures about the attack, we watched them, but there were limitations and bans for Belgium media to show these images. And no one has taken offence at it.
