With most of their micro-studios unrented, a family in Chiba, Japan was ready to demolish their 8-unit apartment building, but architect Kazuyasu Kochi convinced them to rework it into a Cubist-inspired single-family home.
In a country where the lifespan of the mostly wooden homes are only a few decades, Kochi’s rehab proposal was innovate, though his design proved to be one-of-a-kind. Inspired by the Cubist representation of 3 dimensional forms in 2 dimensions, Kochi set out to create a 3-D reality that felt 2-D.
He began by cutting a hole in the middle of the building to connect the 8 tiny rooms. To keep the project affordable, he used large pieces of plywood to shape the new rooms, dividing and connecting the space.
Cutting 2D shapes (triangles and quadrangles) out from the former 3D apartment grid. By ensuring that the 2D shapes didn’t follow the grid, he juxtaposed two different types of depth. With his vivid 4-color scheme, the reassembled home feels like a Cubist patchwork of optical illusions.

Cubism is a 20th century avant-garde art movement, pioneered by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, that revolutionized European painting and sculpture, and inspired related movements in music, literature and architecture. In cubist artworks, objects are broken up, analyzed, and re-assembled in an abstracted form—instead of depicting objects from one viewpoint, the artist depicts the subject from a multitude of viewpoints to represent the subject in a greater context. Often the surfaces intersect at seemingly random angles, removing a coherent sense of depth. The background and object planes interpenetrate one another to create the shallow ambiguous space, one of cubism's distinct characteristics.
The beginnings of Cubism have been dated between 1907 and 1911. The question of when Cubism began depends on the questions of how it can be defined, what distinguishes Cubist art and who developed it first. Pablo Picasso's 1907 painting Les Demoiselles d'Avignon has often been considered a proto-Cubist work. Georges Braque's 1908 Houses at L’Estaque (and related works) prompted Vauxcelles' cubes reference. Gertrude Stein referred to landscapes made by Picasso in 1909, such as Reservoir at Horta de Ebroas, as the first Cubist paintings. The first organized group exhibition by Cubists took place at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris during the spring of 1911 in a room called ‘Salle 41’; it included works by Jean Metzinger, Albert Gleizes, Fernand Léger, Robert Delaunay and Henri Le Fauconnier, yet no works by Picasso and Braque were exhibited.

Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso, known as Pablo Picasso (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈpaβlo piˈkaso], 25 October 1881 – 8 April 1973), was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, and stage designer who spent most of his adult life in France. One of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century, he is widely known for co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture, the co-invention of collage, and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore. Among his most famous works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907), and Guernica (1937), a portrayal of the German bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War.
Picasso, Henri Matisse and Marcel Duchamp are commonly regarded as the three artists who most defined the revolutionary developments in the plastic arts in the opening decades of the 20th century, responsible for significant developments in painting, sculpture, printmaking and ceramics.

With most of their micro-studios unrented, a family in Chiba, Japan was ready to demolish their 8-unit apartment building, but architect Kazuyasu Kochi convinced them to rework it into a Cubist-inspired single-family home.
In a country where the lifespan of the mostly wooden homes are only a few decades, Kochi’s rehab proposal was innovate, though his design proved to be one-of-a-kind. Inspired by the Cubist representation of 3 dimensional forms in 2 dimensions, Kochi set out to create a 3-D reality that felt 2-D.
He began by cutting a hole in the middle of the building to connect the 8 tiny rooms. To keep the project affordable, he used large pieces of plywood to shape the new rooms, dividing and connecting the space.
Cutting 2D shapes (triangles and quadrangles) out from the former 3D apartment grid. By ensuring that the 2D shapes didn’t follow the grid, he juxtaposed two different types of depth. With his vivid 4-color scheme, the reassembled home feels like a Cubist patchwork of optical illusions.

The unlikely union of Suicide’s Alan Vega, Big Star’s Alex Chilton, and singer-songwriter Ben Vaughn happened in December 1994 in a fog of cigarette smoke at two barely-lit, all-night improv sessions at Dessau Studios in New York. What transpired was the group’s only release, a brilliant album called Cubist Blues.
Some kind of alchemy happened. The elements are disparate–Vega, known for Suicide’s grinding, pre-industrial drone, Chilton for his ultra-melodic FM rock, and Vaughn for his outsider art. Put together, what came out was something totally unexpected, a long, mesmeric incantation built on Elvis-meets-Ian Curtis vocals, rockabilly guitar, growling synths, and metronomic drums.
A jam session at heart–albeit a very productive one–the songs took shape as they were recorded. “I showed up with lyrics for one song and figured we would see what happened,” says Vega, recalling the first night in the brand new liner notes. “Little did I know, we would record for hours and hours. By the last song, my brain was burning up. I literally felt myself on fire. I was depleted. Yet, we could have gone on and on.”
So-called supergroups get a bad rap for not equalling the sum of their parts. Vega, Chilton, and Vaughn add up to something from a place beyond any of them. Originally released by Henry Rollins on his 2.13.61 label via Thirsty Ear, the album failed to find any sort of audience–remarkable, considering its players, but reflective of the lull following Kurt Cobain’s death and the collapse of the all-conquering grunge sound. The group played two live shows and then promptly went their separate ways. “At the time, I didn’t fully realize how unique the Cubist Blues experience was,” says Ben Vaughn now. “Looking back, it was magic to work with those guys.”
Timeless, groundbreaking in sound even now, this is a chance to hear a woefully overlooked album that–had it not been so–might have re-shaped the next decade of music.
