Dave (artist)

Dave (real name David Pflugi, born 1969 near Laufen, Switzerland) is an artist whose highly unusual style of art has garnered him international attention. Notable works include the "world cup works", three works of art he created for the FIFA world cups of 1998, 2002 and 2006 in collaboration with FIFA, all of which were signed by the players of the finalist teams just before the cup final.

He again received international media attention in 2009 for two performances he held at the Acropolis in Athens, Greece and at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany. In Frankfurt, he is known as the creator of the artwork "Space of Time" which is a permanent architectural feature of the main entrance to the Commerzbank Tower.

Dave's artistic style is based on the idea that one object can look completely different depending on which perspective it is viewed from. In its simplest form, this takes the form of a three-dimensional relief being painted with fragments of different two-dimensional images. Viewed from a specific position, the fragments come together to form complete images. If the observer moves, the anamorphic illusions come apart again and the image becomes abstract. A heavy emphasis is placed on the Gesamtkunstwerk aspect of the works, rather than individual images. Thus, Dave's artworks, which he refers to as "fusions", often contain a large number of various artistic styles and techniques: A "fusion" can easily be a sculpture, a classical portrait, an action painting and a performance all in one.

James Franco

James Edward Franco (born April 19, 1978) is an American actor and filmmaker. His first prominent acting role was the lead character Daniel Desario on the short-lived cult hit television program Freaks and Geeks. He later played the title character in the TV biographical film James Dean (2001), for which he won a Golden Globe Award. He played Harry Osborn in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy (2002–2007). He is also known for his roles in the films Flyboys (2006), Pineapple Express (2008), Milk (2008), 127 Hours (2010), Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), Oz the Great and Powerful (2013), Spring Breakers (2013), This Is the End (2013), and The Interview (2014). He had a recurring role in the ABC soap opera General Hospital. For his role in 127 Hours (2010), Franco was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor. In 2014, he made his Broadway debut in Of Mice and Men.

Franco volunteers for the Art of Elysium charity and has taught a class at New York University in feature filmmaking and production. In 2013, he began teaching a course in short film production at the University of Southern California and a course in screenwriting at his alma mater, University of California, Los Angeles. In September 2015, Franco began teaching a film class to high school students at Palo Alto High School.

The Disaster Artist

The Disaster Artist is an award-winning 2013 non-fiction book written by Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell. Sestero reveals the troubled development and production of the 2003 cult film The Room while detailing his own struggles as a starving young actor and his relationship with the mysterious Tommy Wiseau. The book focuses on the difficulties and odd experiences Sestero had behind the scenes and his unlikely friendship with Wiseau. A film adaptation is being developed by Seth Rogen with James Franco directing, producing and starring as Tommy Wiseau along with Dave Franco as Greg Sestero.

Synopsis

Sestero, an aspiring actor, first encounters Wiseau in an acting class. Sestero is at first perplexed by Wiseau's over-the-top acting technique, his unusual physical appearance, his unidentifiable accent and his eccentric behavior, which includes a fascination with all things American and a refusal to discuss his past. At the same time, Sestero admires Wiseau's genuine enthusiasm for both life and acting. The two form an odd but affectionate bond as Sestero begins to learn of the many contradictions of Wiseau's personality.

Dave Franco

David John "Dave" Franco (born June 12, 1985) is an American television and film actor who is known for his roles in the films 21 Jump Street, Charlie St. Cloud, Fright Night, Now You See Me, Warm Bodies, and Neighbors, and on the ninth season of the series Scrubs. He is the younger brother of actor James Franco.

Early life

Franco was born in Palo Alto, California, the son of Betsy Lou (née Verne), a poet, author, and editor, and Douglas Eugene "Doug" Franco (1948–2011), who met as students at Stanford University. Franco's father was of Portuguese and Swedish descent. Franco's mother is Jewish (from a family of Russian Jewish ancestry, with her parents having changed the surname from "Verovitz" to "Verne"); Dave has stated that he is "proud" to be Jewish. Franco's paternal grandmother, Marjorie (Peterson) Franco, is a published author of young adult books. Franco's maternal grandmother, Mitzie (Levine) Verne, owns the Verne Art Gallery, a prominent art gallery in Cleveland, and was an active member in the National Council of Jewish Women. Franco grew up in California with his two older brothers, Tom and James.
