Nashik district, also known as Nasik district, is a district in Maharashtra, India. The city of Nashik is the administrative headquarters of the district.
Nashik district is the third largest district in Maharashtra in terms of area occupying an area of 15,530 square kilometres in the Khandesh region. It is bounded by Dhule district to the north, Jalgaon district to the east, Aurangabad district to the southeast, Ahmadnagar district to the south, Thane district to the southwest, Valsad and Navsari districts of Gujarat to the west, and The Dangs district to the northwest.
The Western Ghats or Sahyadri range stretches from north to south across the western portion of the district. With the exception of the westernmost few villages, the western portion is hilly, and intersected by ravines, and only the simplest kind of cultivation is possible. The western slope of the Ghats is drained by several rivers, including the Daman Ganga River, which drains westwards to the Arabian Sea.
Nashik (pron:ˈnʌʃɪk) ( pronunciation ) is a city in the northwest region of Maharashtra and is the administrative headquarter of the Nashik District and Nashik Division. It is the third largest city in Maharashtra. The city is situated at the foothills of the Western Ghats mountains on the banks of the river Godavari. At 700 m (2,300 ft) above sea level, its elevation is highest among the major cities in Maharashtra and one of the highest among million plus cities in India.
Nashik is in northern Maharashtra at 700 m (2,300 ft) from the mean sea level. The river Godavari originates 24 km (15 mi) from Brahmagiri Mountain, Trimbakeshwar, Nashik and flows along the northern boundary of the city through the old residential settlement. The river had been dying at an alarming rate due to pollution created by factories. But it has been successfully cleaned. Other than Godavari, important rivers like Vaitarana, Bhima, Girana, Kashyapi and Darana flow across Nashik.
Nashik lies on the western edge of the Deccan Plateau which is a volcanic formation. All over the district, lime nodules and kankar are found. Jalgaon and Aurangabad are to the east of Nashik. Ahmadnagar lies to the south while Thane and part of Gujrat are to the west of Nashik. The soil is primarily black which is favorable for agriculture.
The Manchester and Liverpool District Bank was formed in 1829 and it became one of the leading provincial joint stock banks; its name was shortened to District Bank in 1924. The Bank was acquired by the National Provincial Bank in 1962 but kept its identity until the latter’s merger with Westminster Bank.
Joseph Macardy was an Irishman who became the senior partner of a firm of Manchester stockbrokers and in 1828 he became involved in the establishment of a new joint stock bank in the city. However, when his proposal to open branches in all the neighbouring towns was rejected, he immediately issued a prospectus for a new bank, specifically to have branches, and to be called either the District Banking Company or the Union Banking Company. In the event, the Bank duly opened in 1829 under the name Manchester and Liverpool District Banking; its success was such that by 1877 Grindon described it as “first and foremost among provincial joint-stock banks”.
