Herne Hill /hɜːrn/ is a district in south London, England, approximately four miles from Charing Cross and bordered by Brixton, Denmark Hill, Dulwich, Loughborough Junction and Tulse Hill. It overlaps the boundary between the boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark. There is a road of the same name in the area (which is part of the A215 and was formerly called Herne Hill Road).
In Rocque's 1746 map, the area is shown as as "Island Green", probably reflecting the presence of the River Effra and smaller tributaries. Early references to the area also use the form "Ireland Green".
The first documented reference to the name "Herne Hill" that can be dated with certainty is in a map by the topographer James Edwards published in 1800, where it appears as "Hearn Hill". This map shows the very first houses built on the hill.
The area now known as Herne Hill was part of the Manor of Milkwell, which existed from at least 1291, and was a mixture of farms and woodland until the late 18th century. It was divided between the ancient parishes of Camberwell and Lambeth. In 1783, Samuel Sanders (a timber merchant) bought the land now occupied by Denmark Hill and Herne Hill from the Manor; he then began granting leases for large plots of land to wealthy families.

Corporate session at Herne Hill, starting with a track induction and ending with a 6 lap scratch race. Due to the way the pack was shuffled earlier, I started the race near the back, already half a lap down. Although I made good progress and reached the top 4, I got boxed in on the banking, at which point the remaining riders sprinted, leaving me in the dust! Was too tired at the end, after riding most of the race not in a slipstream, to make up the gap again.

I love skimming above the roof-tops through London. The journey through the inner-London boroughs reveals all manner of back-yars, social housing, post-industrial wasteland, and small industry.

Nursing two reluctant knees and a can of Stella, he perambulates through the seasons seeking adventure in our city's remote and forgotten reaches. When John Rogers packed away his rucksack to start a family in London he didn't stop travelling. But instead of canoeing up the Rejang River to find retired headhunters in Sarawak, he caught the ferry to Woolwich in search of the edge of the city at Crayford Marshes. It's just like you to change
Just when i got used to things
So that every word i say
Gets turned around
And thrown in my face
I held onto the words that you said
Like they were of my own flesh
How much was truth and were lies
I may never know will i
And i will never follow you
Though i may look up to you
And i take my breath from you
These are the signs of life
It's just like you to say
Luck has not been convenient
And she should change her schedule
And pen me in for a week or two
But old lady luck never did
She hung you out to dry
You're my heroine
