Serbia (i/ˈsɜːrbiə/, Serbian: Србија / Srbija, IPA: [sř̩bija]), officially the Republic of Serbia (Serbian: Република Србија / Republika Srbija), is a sovereign state situated at the crossroads between Central and Southeast Europe, covering the southern part of the Pannonian Plain and the central Balkans. Serbia is landlocked and borders Hungary to the north; Romania and Bulgaria to the east; Macedonia to the south; and Croatia, Bosnia, and Montenegro to the west; it also claims a border with Albania through the disputed territory of Kosovo. The capital of Serbia, Belgrade, is one of the largest cities in Southeast Europe. Serbia numbers around 7 million residents.
Following the Slavic migrations to the Balkans from the 6th century onwards, Serbs established several states in the early Middle Ages. The Serbian Kingdom obtained recognition by Rome and Constantinople in 1217; it reached its peak in 1346 as a relatively short-lived Serbian Empire. By the mid-16th century, the entire territory of modern-day Serbia was annexed by the Ottoman Empire, at times interrupted by the Habsburgs. In the early 19th century, the Serbian Revolution established the nation-state as the region's first constitutional monarchy, which subsequently expanded its territory. Following disastrous casualties in World War I, and subsequent unification of Habsburg crownland of Vojvodina with Serbia, the country co-founded Yugoslavia with other South Slavic peoples, which would exist in various political formations until the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s, which had devastating effects for the region. As a result, Serbia formed a union with Montenegro in 1992, which broke apart in 2006, when Serbia again became an independent country. In 2008 the parliament of Kosovo, Serbia's southern province with an Albanian ethnic majority, declared independence, with mixed responses from the international community.
Niš (Serbian Cyrillic: Ниш, pronounced [nîːʃ]) is the city of southern Serbia and the third-largest city in Serbia (after Belgrade and Novi Sad). It is the administrative center of the Nišava District. According to the 2011 census, the city has population of 183,164, while urban area of Niš (with adjacent urban settlement of Niška Banja included) has 187,544 inhabitants; the administrative area has a population of 260,237.
It is one of the oldest cities in the Balkans and Europe, and has from ancient times been considered a gateway between the East and the West. It was founded by the Scordisci in 279 BC, after an invasion of the Balkans. The city was among several taken in the Roman conquest in 75 BC; the Romans built the Via Militaris in the 1st century, with Naissus being one of its key towns; it is also the birthplace of Constantine the Great, the first Christian Emperor and the founder of Constantinople, and Constantius III and Justin I. It is home to one of the oldest churches in Serbia, dating to the 4th century, located in the suburb of Mediana. The Balkans came under the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire. In the 6th century, Slavs started settling the Balkans, while the town was held by the Byzantines until the 9th century, when it came under Bulgar rule. The town switched hands between the two, before being given by the Byzantines to the Serbs in the 12th century. Niš served as Stefan Nemanja's capital. It was conquered by the Ottomans in the 15th century, becoming the seat of a sanjak initially in Rumelia Eyalet (1385-1443, 1448-1846), laterly in Niš Eyalet (1846-1864) and finally in Danube Vilayet (1864-1878). It was liberated by the Serbian Army in 1878 during the Serbian–Ottoman War (1876–78).

this was one of the most depressing and eerie places I have ever encountered.. it was very interesting and the guide spoke perfect English. He walked me through all three floors of the camp..One room was very sad. It was dedicated to the women and kids that were killed and one room was full of pictures that the local students drew about life in a concentration camp... over 12,000 people were killed here... it is a must see..

http://www.aswetravel.com/honesty-in-beautiful-belgrade/ - Belgrade Serbia: As We Travel Europe We’ve arrived here in Belgrade, took an overnight train from Montenegro. The train arrived three hours late. And was pretty shabby too. Pretty shabby train, but we are here at least. It’s really warm outside, so we are going to find our hostel and check in, and rest for a bit. Good Morning from Belgrade! We are going to start the day here exactly the same way the locals do; with a traditional dish called Borek. What exactly is it? It’s a special type of pastry. You can have three different types of filling. So, you can have meat, plain, or cheese, and this is a plain one. Apparently you dip it in yogurt, and you just eat it like that. Let’s taste it. It’s a bit greasy. And, after this we’re goi...

http://davidsbeenhere.com David’s Been Here continues its tour of ancient sites in Serbia at Justiniana Prima, or “Empress’ Town” in the town of Leskovac. Considered a great day trip option from the city of Nis, Leskovac is just a two-hour drive south. David gets together with the only English-speaking guide he could find (Nebojsa “Nebo”) to see the Byzantine ruins of Justiniana Prima located about 29 km west of Leskovac nestled among lush scenery. Justiniana Prima was an early Christian city founded by Emperor Justinian I. It served as the seat of the Archbishop from 535 to 615. The site contains what is left of an enormous basilica, the acropolis, lower town, and upper town. Walking around Justiniana Prima will reveal city walls, gates, churches, and large bath complex with hypocaust s...
