The Kodiak bear (Ursus arctos middendorffi), also known as the Kodiak brown bear or the Alaskan grizzly bear, inhabits the islands of the Kodiak Archipelago in southwest Alaska. Its Alutiiq name is taquka-aq. It is the largest brown bear and one of the two largest bears, the other being the polar bear.
Taxonomist C.H. Merriam was first to recognize Kodiak bears as unique and the only subspecies of the brown bear, and he named the species "Ursus middendorffi" in honor of the celebrated Baltic naturalist Dr. A. Th. von Middendorff. Subsequent taxonomic work merged all North American brown bears into a single species (Ursus arctos). Genetic samples from bears on Kodiak have shown that they are related to brown bears on the Alaska Peninsula and Kamchatka, Russia, and all brown bears roughly north of the US. Kodiak bears have been genetically isolated since at least the last ice age (10,000 to 12,000 years ago) and very little genetic diversity exists within the population. Although the current population is healthy and productive, and has shown no overt adverse signs of inbreeding, it may be more susceptible to new diseases or parasites than other, more diverse brown bear populations.

FULL DOCUMENTARIES | http://bit.ly/Full-Docs In the far north-west of the American continent stretches a land some one and a half million square kilometres in size. Only six hundred thousand people inhabit this region where the frozen tundra, the coniferous forests and the mountains dominate a landscape which, in some places, has never been trodden by man. The start of the melt announces the resurgence of life in Alaska. With the vegetation, food returns, and the largest of Alaska's land carnivores, the grizzly bear, awakes from its winter sleep. The grizzly bear belongs to the same species as the European bear, but its better diet enables it to grow much bi...

http://www.alaskabearsandwolves.com/values-of-the-grizzly/ PLEASE LIKE N COMMENT!! Two giant male grizzlies, or coastal brown bears, battle for dominance during mating season on the Alaska Peninsula. Fights like this can result in serious or fatal injuries, as the drive to mate is very strong. Female, or sow grizzlies, will chose to copulate with the most dominate males, so the winner's genes prevail- classic evolution at work. Males, or boars can grow to over 1500 pounds, making them the largest land based predators on earth (polar bears are a tiny bit bigger, but they are considered marine mammals). Known as Alaska's Emerald Isis, Kodiak Island provides a wealth of spectacular geographical features and habitats within a surprisingly small area. Wildlife abounds, from the majestic bald eagle to the amazing sockeye salmon, witch swims thousands of miles back to its Kodiak birthplace to spawn.....and die. But the king of the island is the massive Kodiak bear, rivaled only by its polar cousin in size and strength. Standing on its hind legs, it is twice the height of its only predator-man.
The best bear viewing and salmon fishing on the planet. Ayakulik River Adventures located at the mouth of the Ayakulik River, on Kodiak Island, Alaska provides opportunity to view Kodiak Brown Bears as they interact with one another & spawning Pacific salmon. Wildlife of Alaska Brown bear Brown bears can be found throughout the state, with the minor exceptions of the islands west of Unimak in the Aleutians, the islands south of Frederick Sound in southeast Alaska, and the islands in the Bering Sea. Most brown bears in Alaska are grizzly bears (the subspecies of brown bear found throughout North America), but Kodiak Island is home to Kodiak bears, another subspecies that is the largest type of brown bear in the world. The brown bear is the top predator in Alaska Black bear The black bear is much smaller than the brown bear. I wanted to share an amazing hunt of Roy's I had filmed and edited as a sample for a TV show, Beast Mode Bowhunting, that never came to fruition. I had networks that wanted to have me part of their line up, so I submitted this as an example of what Beast Mode Bowhunting was to me. They didn't like it. They said in this sample they expected me to be playing the role of a larger-than-life hunting "super hero" training hard and do extreme hunts. I told them that I was no super hero and I wouldn't be acting like one and this hunt of Roy's was as extreme and intense as it gets and if I did the show, he would be a big part of it. They said that isn't what they had in mind and I said, well, I guess we don't need to worry about the show then. And, that was that. For me, I had hosted TV shows...
