Basic English Grammar -- Chapter 03 -- Gender -- Nouns ( Masculine, feminine, Neuter, Common)
The Noun-Gender tells us about the sex of the noun.
In Grammar-Nouns, there are FOUR GENDERS.
1. Masculine gender:
A noun is said to be in the Masculine gender if it refers to a male character or member of a species.
Man, lion, hero, boy, king, horse and actor are nouns of masculine gender.
Example:
• A boy is playing in the play-ground.
• Hero of the movie is not a native of this country.
In these sentences the words "boy" and "hero" are masculine-gender nouns.
2. Feminine gender:
A noun is said to be in the feminine gender if it refers to a female member of a species.
Woman, lioness, heroine, girl, mare, niece, empress, cow and actress are few of the feminine-gender nouns that we use.
Example:
• A girl is playing in the play-ground.
• Heroine of the movie is not a native of this country.
In these sentences the words "girl" and "heroine" are feminine-gender nouns.
The next in the Noun-Gender is common gender.
3. Common gender:
A noun is said to be in Common gender if it refers to a member of species which can be a male or a female.
Child, student, friend, applicant, candidate, servant, member,
parliamentarian and leader are few of the common-gender nouns.
Example:
• A child is playing in the play-ground.
• A Parliamentarian should have command over his language.
In these sentences the words, "child" and "parliamentarian" are nouns of common gender.
The next in the Noun-Gender is neuter gender.
4. Neuter gender:
A noun is said to be in the neuter gender if it refers to a member of a species which is neither a male nor a female.
Normally nouns referring to lifeless objects are in neuter nouns.
Chair, table, tree, star, mountain, street, book, car, school,
paper, pencil and computer are few of the neuter nouns which We use regularly.

GENDER
All living beings belong to either male or female gender.
A noun word that tells us about a male living being human or animal, is said to be of masculine gender.
And a noun that tells us about a female living being human or animal, belongs to the feminine gender.
Masculine Feminine
Lion Lioness
Man Woman
Boy Girl
Horse Mare
Hero Heroine
Husband Wife
The previous list of words on the left side is all males. They all belong to masculine gender.
List of words on the right side are all females. They all are of feminine gender.
Look at these sentences ...
1. Akbar was a great king.
2. Leena is a cheerful girl.
3. There is a lioness in the forest.
4. The hero in this film is very popular.
Common Gender
A noun that can be used both for the male and female in known as a common gender.
Examples:- Friend, parent, Officer, Servant, Thief, Student and Child etc.
1. A friend can be male or female.
2. A parent can be mother or father.
3. An officer can be a man or woman.
Same is true for a thief, a student and a child.
Neuter Gender
In English, non-living objects and things do not belong to a particular gender male or female. They are neither masculine nor feminine, they belong to Neuter gender.
Things Like: -
Chair, Table, Book, Fan, Door or Window come under the Neuter gender.
Neuter means neither male nor female.
Words Like:-
Plant and Flower also come under the class of Neuter gender.
Collective Nouns even when they denote living beings also come under Neuter gender.
Examples : Herd, Class, Army, Group etc.
Objects of nature are often looked upon as persons and are personified as males or females. In that case, natural elements known for beauty, gentleness and grace are seen as belonging to feminine gender.
Nouns such as ship and river are also known as feminine gender.
Elements known for power, violence or cruelty belong to masculine gender.
Examples :
Sun, Ocean, Seasons like, Summer and Winter, Storm and Death etc.
Forming Feminine Genders
Masculine gender can be changed into feminine in different ways.
By using a completely different word
Boy Girl
Man Woman
Dog Bitch
Father Mother
Gentleman Lady
2. By adding 'ess'
Author Authoress
Heir Heiress
Poet Poetess
Count Countess
Lion Lioness
Host Hostess
3. In some masculine nouns, 'ess' is added after dropping the last vowel of the word.
Masculine Feminine
Actor Actress 'o' has been dropped and 'ess' as been added
Hunter Huntress 'e' between 'ter' has been removed and 'ess'
had been added
Negro Negress 'last vowel 'o' has been dropped and 'ess' has
been added
Prince Princes last vowel 'e' has been replaced by 'ess'
Tiger Tigress Same in case of 'tiger'
4. By adding suffix like 'ine', 'ina' or 'a'
Hero Heroine 'ine' adds after 'hero'
Czar Czarina 'ina'
Signor Signora 'a' only
5. Sometimes by placing a word before or after

Grammatical gender

Basic English Grammar -- Chapter 03 -- Gender -- Nouns ( Masculine, feminine, Neuter, Common)
The Noun-Gender tells us about the sex of the noun.
In Grammar-Nouns, there are FOUR GENDERS.
1. Masculine gender:
A noun is said to be in the Masculine gender if it refers to a male character or member of a species.
Man, lion, hero, boy, king, horse and actor are nouns of masculine gender.
Example:
• A boy is playing in the play-ground.
• Hero of the movie is not a native of this country.
In these sentences the words "boy" and "hero" are masculine-gender nouns.
2. Feminine gender:
A noun is said to be in the feminine gender if it refers to a female member of a species.
Woman, lioness, heroine, girl, mare, niece, empress, cow and actress are few of the feminine-gender nouns that we use.
Example:
• A girl is playing in the play-ground.
• Heroine of the movie is not a native of this country.
In these sentences the words "girl" and "heroine" are feminine-gender nouns.
The next in the Noun-Gender is common gender.
3. Common gender:
A noun is said to be in Common gender if it refers to a member of species which can be a male or a female.
Child, student, friend, applicant, candidate, servant, member,
parliamentarian and leader are few of the common-gender nouns.
Example:
• A child is playing in the play-ground.
• A Parliamentarian should have command over his language.
In these sentences the words, "child" and "parliamentarian" are nouns of common gender.
The next in the Noun-Gender is neuter gender.
4. Neuter gender:
A noun is said to be in the neuter gender if it refers to a member of a species which is neither a male nor a female.
Normally nouns referring to lifeless objects are in neuter nouns.

GENDER
All living beings belong to either male or female gender.
A noun word that tells us about a male living being human or animal, is said to be of masculine gender.
And a noun that tells us about a female living being human or animal, belongs to the feminine gender.
Masculine Feminine

Boy Girl
Horse Mare
Hero Heroine
Husband Wife
The previous list of words on the left side is all males. They all belong to masculine gender.
List of words on the right side are all females. They all are of feminine gender.
Look at these sentences ...
1. Akbar was a great king.
2. Leena is a cheerful girl.
3. There is a lioness in the forest.
4. The hero in this film is very popular.
Common Gender
A noun that can be used both for the male and female in known as a common gender.
Examples:- Friend, parent, Officer, Servant, Thief, Student and Child etc.
1. A friend can be male or female.
2. A parent can be mother or father.
3. An officer can be a man or woman.
Same is true for a thief, a student and a child.
Neuter Gender
In English, non-living objects and things do not belong to a particular gender male or female. They are neither masculine nor feminine, they belong to Neuter gender.
Things Like: -
Chair, Table, Book, Fan, Door or Window come under the Neuter gender.
Neuter means neither male nor female.
Words Like:-
Plant and Flower also come under the class of Neuter gender.
Collective Nouns even when they denote living beings also come under Neuter gender.
Examples : Herd, Class, Army, Group etc.
Objects of nature are often looked upon as persons and are personified as males or females. In that case, natural elements known for beauty, gentleness and grace are seen as belonging to feminine gender.
Nouns such as ship and river are also known as feminine gender.
Elements known for power, violence or cruelty belong to masculine gender.
Examples :
Sun, Ocean, Seasons like, Summer and Winter, Storm and Death etc.
Forming Feminine Genders
Masculine gender can be changed into feminine in different ways.
By using a completely different word

2. By adding 'ess'

The word pneuma, usually translated "spirit" but sometimes "wind" and "breath," is a grammatically neuter word and in Greek is referred to by such neuter terms as "it," "its" or "itself."
When the King James Version was translated, the doctrine of the Trinity, which supposes that the Holy Spirit is a being, had been in place for more than 1,000 years. The translators of that version almost always changed the pronouns when referring to the Holy Spirit ( pneuma ) to "he," "his" and "himself" from the original Greek pronouns "it," "its" and "itself" (see John:16:13-14 ; Romans:8:26 ).
When is Jehovah or Jesus ever referred to as an it? This would be very disrespectful.
As for the expression, "in the name of the holy spirit," know that people can do many things in the name of a belief or a government. That doesn't actually mean that that belief or government is a person, because a belief and a government is not a person. So " in the name of", that expression, does not in any way denote a person or even an actual name.
