A Moment In Rhymesayers - Episode 1: The Beginning
This video touches on the high school years, and the time right after, for pivotal members of the Rhymesayers Family; Brent "Siddiq" Sayers (CEO, Rhymesayers Entertainment), Musab "Beyond" Saad, and Anthony "ANT" Davis & Sean "Slug" Daley of Atmosphere. These are the stories whose seeds would eventually grow into Headshots.
This video also includes clips from the infamous Microphone Check Showcase events from 1995, featuring The Abstract Pack and The Urban Mind Dwellers (which featured Xilam Balam who would eventually become a member of The Native Ones aka Los Nativos)!

"History" is a critical piece in the Headshots tapes puzzle. First and foremost, it's a celebration of the life and talent of influential Headshots member Sess (Of The Abstract Pack), who passed away earlier the same year that the tape was released. Additionally, it represents a shift from the crew trying to lure new listeners with music from outside artists, to focusing on their own music, instead. Lastly, it makes the jump from primarily selling excerpts from their live shows to focusing on 4-track recordings from Ant's basement a.k.a The Factory. "History" is the most comprehensive collection of material from the original Headshots Crew on one tape, featuring music from The Abstract Pack, Phull Surkle, Atmosphere, Beyond, I Self Devine (via the debut of the Dynospectrum), and of course Sess, who is featured on a handful of songs, as well as some freestyle interludes throughout the tape.
Consequently, "History" also marks a change in what the future of Headshots would be. Previous to the tape's release, the crew had already started to splinter off in different directions, but they felt it was important to come back together and record "History" to celebrate Sess' life after his passing. It's a reality that many great groups have been faced with over time. It's extremely difficult to keep everyone on one singular path for an extended period of time. But, that is the natural course of things, and regardless of whether the crew remained one unit or not, everyone went on to make their mark on the Twin Cities' Hip-Hop scene in one way or another. And nearly all are still active in the scene to this day– still making history…

Rhymesayers, the home of Atmosphere, MF Doom, Brother Ali, Aesop Rock, Dilated Peoples, Freeway & Jake One & more is celebrating their 20th Year Anniversary in 2015. In honor of that the Rhymesayers staff and artists discuss the path of turning a passion into a successful business model. Starting from point zero (or less than), the founders of the Rhymesayers Label had no music industry experience and limited business backgrounds, but filled with passion and determination they were able to cultivate and invigorate a local following which in a few years turned global.

On Friday, December 4, 2015, we celebrated the Rhymesayers 20 Anniversary Concert at the Target Center in Minneapolis, MN. Relive the experience with this recap video of the evening.
Thank you to all the fans, friends and family who have supported Rhymesayers over our twenty years.
Thank you to everyone that touched the stage from the first needle
drop to the confetti landing on the floor. Seeing all the DJs, MCs, musicians and
dancers together in one place really was a beautiful thing to
experience.
Thank you to the entire crew that worked two entire nonstop days to
make sure the stage, lights, video and sound would be the best they
could be for the evening. This show was a lot of work for a lot of
people, much respect and appreciation to the fifty plus crew that made
this night possible.
Thank you to First Avenue and the Target Center who helped and pushed
us to make this show a reality from an idea over a year ago. Their
support on this show was overwhelming and without them it would not
have been possible.
Thank you to everyone at Rhymesayers and Fifth Element for all the
hard work and dedication that was needed to make this show work. It's
not always easy running our daily operations with the extra work load
of a show this size, but somehow we pulled it off.

In celebration of our 20th Anniversary this year, Rhymesayers packed up and headed down to SXSW 2015 in Austin, TX. First, we gave a panel discussion on the label's history, as well as its future. Afterward, we headed over to the House of Vans at the Mohawk to perform a label showcase for a packed house. This was truly a night to remember.
This is a brief recap of this monumental event, which featured performances from Atmosphere, Dilated Peoples, Brother Ali, Grieves, Prof, deM atlaS and Get Cryphy, as well as surprise guest appearances from P.O.S, Freeway, Murs, Fashawn and the legendary Chuck D!
Thank you to all who came out to show us some love that night, as well as all those who've shown your love and support over the last two decades. With so much more in store, we look forward to growing with you in the years to come.

Rhymesayers Entertainment is an independent hip hop record label based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was co-founded in 1995 by Sean Daley (Slug), Anthony Davis (Ant), Musab Saad (Musab) and Brent Sayers (Siddiq). It is the largest hip-hop label in Minnesota.
Rhymesayers Entertainment is mainly composed of native Minnesotans as well as nationally recognized artists including Soul Position and MF Doom, who has released one album Mm.. Food for the label. It has a friendly relationship with the Doomtree crew as well. P.O.S of Doomtree is signed as a solo artist to the label.
In 1999, the label opened its own record store called Fifth Element, located in Uptown, Minneapolis. The store is a staple of hip hop in the Twin Cities, selling independent and commercial hip hop, but also specializing in local music.
On March 9, 2007, Rhymesayers Entertainment signed a promotion, marketing and distribution deal with Warner Music Group's Independent Label Group. Releases for 2007 include EP's from Atmosphere and highly acclaimed albums from Brother Ali and Mac Lethal.

Starting from point zero (or less than), the founders of the Rhymesayers Label had no music industry experience and limited business backgrounds, but filled with passion and determination they were able to cultivate and invigorate a local following which in a few years turned global. On Friday, December 4, 2015, we celebrated the Rhymesayers 20 Anniversary Concert at the Target Center in Minneapolis, MN. Relive the experience with this recap video of the evening. Thank you to all the fans, friends and family who have supported Rhymesayers over our twenty years. Thank you to everyone that touched the stage from the first needle drop to the confetti landing on the floor. Seeing all the DJs, MCs, musicians and dancers together in one place really was a beautiful thing to experience. Thank you to the entire crew that worked two entire nonstop days to make sure the stage, lights, video and sound would be the best they could be for the evening. This show was a lot of work for a lot of people, much respect and appreciation to the fifty plus crew that made this night possible. Thank you to First Avenue and the Target Center who helped and pushed us to make this show a reality from an idea over a year ago. Their support on this show was overwhelming and without them it would not have been possible. Thank you to everyone at Rhymesayers and Fifth Element for all the hard work and dedication that was needed to make this show work. It's not always easy running our daily operations with the extra work load of a show this size, but somehow we pulled it off. This was truly a night to remember. This is a brief recap of this monumental event, which featured performances from Atmosphere, Dilated Peoples, Brother Ali, Grieves, Prof, deM atlaS and Get Cryphy, as well as surprise guest appearances from P.O.S, Freeway, Murs, Fashawn and the legendary Chuck D! In 1995, some of the most talented artists in the Twin Cities Hip Hop scene merged to form the Headshots Crew; The Abstract Pack, Phull Surkle, Black Hohl, Urban Atmosphere, and Beyond. Here's a look into how the crew came to be.

"History" is a critical piece in the Headshots tapes puzzle. First and foremost, it's a celebration of the life and talent of influential Headshots member Sess (Of The Abstract Pack), who passed away earlier the same year that the tape was released. Additionally, it represents a shift from the crew trying to lure new listeners with music from outside artists, to focusing on their own music, instead. Lastly, it makes the jump from primarily selling excerpts from their live shows to focusing on 4-track recordings from Ant's basement a.k.a The Factory. "History" is the most comprehensive collection of material from the original Headshots Crew on one tape, featuring music from The Abstract Pack, Phull Surkle, Atmosphere, Beyond, I Self Devine (via the debut of the Dynospectrum), and of course Sess, who is featured on a handful of songs, as well as some freestyle interludes throughout the tape.
Consequently, "History" also marks a change in what the future of Headshots would be. Previous to the tape's release, the crew had already started to splinter off in different directions, but they felt it was important to come back together and record "History" to celebrate Sess' life after his passing. It's a reality that many great groups have been faced with over time. It's extremely difficult to keep everyone on one singular path for an extended period of time. But, that is the natural course of things, and regardless of whether the crew remained one unit or not, everyone went on to make their mark on the Twin Cities' Hip-Hop scene in one way or another. And nearly all are still active in the scene to this day– still making history…

On Friday, December 4, 2015, we celebrated the Rhymesayers 20 Anniversary Concert at the Target Center in Minneapolis, MN. Relive the experience with this recap video of the evening.
Thank you to all the fans, friends and family who have supported Rhymesayers over our twenty years.
Thank you to everyone that touched the stage from the first needle
drop to the confetti landing on the floor. Seeing all the DJs, MCs, musicians and
dancers together in one place really was a beautiful thing to
experience.
Thank you to the entire crew that worked two entire nonstop days to
make sure the stage, lights, video and sound would be the best they
could be for the evening. This show was a lot of work for a lot of
people, much respect and appreciation to the fifty plus crew that made
this night possible.
Thank you to First Avenue and the Target Center who helped and pushed
us to make this show a reality from an idea over a year ago. Their
support on this show was overwhelming and without them it would not
have been possible.
Thank you to everyone at Rhymesayers and Fifth Element for all the
hard work and dedication that was needed to make this show work. It's
not always easy running our daily operations with the extra work load
of a show this size, but somehow we pulled it off.

In celebration of our 20th Anniversary this year, Rhymesayers packed up and headed down to SXSW 2015 in Austin, TX. First, we gave a panel discussion on the label's history, as well as its future. Afterward, we headed over to the House of Vans at the Mohawk to perform a label showcase for a packed house. This was truly a night to remember.
This is a brief recap of this monumental event, which featured performances from Atmosphere, Dilated Peoples, Brother Ali, Grieves, Prof, deM atlaS and Get Cryphy, as well as surprise guest appearances from P.O.S, Freeway, Murs, Fashawn and the legendary Chuck D!
Thank you to all who came out to show us some love that night, as well as all those who've shown your love and support over the last two decades. With so much more in store, we look forward to growing with you in the years to come.
