Billingsgate is one of the 25 Wards of the City of London. Its name derives from being the City's original water gate, and this small City Ward is situated on the north bank of the River Thames between London Bridge and Tower Bridge in the south-east of the Square Mile.
The modern Ward extends south to the Thames, west to Lovat Lane and Rood Lane, north to Fenchurch Street and Dunster Court, and east to Mark Lane and St Dunstan's Hill.
Billingsgate's most ancient historical reference is as a water gate to the city of Trinovantum (the name given to London in medieval British legend), as mentioned in the Historia Regum Britanniae (Eng: History of the Kings of Britain) written c. 1136 by Geoffrey of Monmouth. This work describes how Belinus, a legendary king of Britain said to have held the throne from about 390 BC, erected London's first fortified water gate:
Originally known as Blynesgate and Byllynsgate, its name apparently derives from its origins as a water gate on the Thames, where goods were landed, becoming Billingsgate Wharf, part of London's docks close to Lower Thames Street.
Billingsgate Fish Market, in east London, is the United Kingdom's largest inland fish market. It takes its name from Billingsgate, a ward in the south-east corner of the City of London, where the riverside market was originally established. In its original location in the 19th century, Billingsgate was the largest fish market in the world.
Billingsgate Wharf, close to Lower Thames Street, became the centre of a fish market during the 16th and 17th centuries but did not become formally established until an Act of Parliament in 1699.
In 1850, the market according to Horace Jones, "consisted only of shed buildings ... The open space on the north of the well-remembered Billingsgate Dock was dotted with low booths and sheds, with a range of wooden houses with a piazza in front on the west, which served the salesmen and fishmongers as shelter, and for the purposes of carrying on their trade." In that year the market was rebuilt to a design by J.B. Bunning, the City architect.
The fish market on the coast in the western part of Nouakchott, Mauritania is a bustling centre. It is described by Lonely Planet as "incredibly lively and extremely colorful" and having "teams of men, mostly Wolof and Fula, dragging in heavy hand-knotted fishing nets and small boys hurrying back and forth with trays of fish".

SS London was a British steamship which sank in the Bay of Biscay on 11 January 1866. The ship was travelling from Gravesend in England to Melbourne, Australia, when she began taking in water on 10 January, with 239 persons aboard. The ship was overloaded with cargo and unseaworthy, and only 19 survivors were able to escape the foundering ship by lifeboat, leaving a death toll of 220.
London was built in Blackwall Yard by Money Wigrams and Sons and launched on the River Thames on 20 July 1864, and had a 1652 ton register.
From 23 September 1864 she undertook sea trials and on 23 October 1864 started her first voyage to Melbourne via Portsmouth and Plymouth. During the voyage a boat crew was sent to locate a man overboard, but this boatcrew was lost, and later rescued by the Henry Tabar. London arrived in Cape Town on 5 December 1864 and set sail again on 7 December, arriving in Melbourne on 2 January 1865.
On 4 February 1865 she left Melbourne for the return trip to London with 260 passengers and 90,000 ounces (2,600 kg) of gold, and arrived back in Gravesend on 26 April 1865.

Ever heard of the famous London fish market which opens at 5:30 in the morning and then closes at 8:30 am? This week the London map team went wired on coffee to check it out. Seemingly the only three young girls in the entire market we encountered some unique dancing and had to compete against each other in a challenge!

I made a cassetteboy style mash up of The BBC series The London Markets The Fish Market: Inside Billingsgate. I also used bits from The World's Greatest Food Markets from BBC Two. It's a cut and paste comedy video. Including the Bastard of Billingsgate Roger Barton, Gordon Ramsey, Hugh Fearnley-Wittingstall. Think they were great series loved them, and mean no malice towards the guy, just all the swearing in the programmes inspired me to have a go with my own spoof parody.

I love the Noryangjin Fish Market! Annami and I explore this place for the first time. It's huge and full of amazing seafood! This place is great, and the prices are really good! We will go back again in the future to eat a bunch of raw seafood. Definitely a "MUST SEE" in Seoul. You can get to Noryangjin Fish Market by taking Line 1 (dark blue line) subway to Noryangjin Station. It is 1 stop south of Yongsan Station on the south side of the Han River. The fish market is located right across the tracks at the train station, so you don't have to walk very far at all. Come to the Noryangjin Fish Market with your cameras, video cameras and an empty stomach to sample some of the cheap seafood! Thank you for watching, we really appreciate the support! _____________________________...
