This is a whole new interpretation of Punk!!
In its most genuine meaning, the Punk kid, the grotty snotty-nosed kid, the “morveux” in French, and “Hanattare Kozou” in Japanese… The very first rebellion of your life is often addressed to your own mother, Yohji says. The whole collection started with that image of the overwhelmed mother who cannot pay too much attention to details, ends up dressing up her child in a very neglectful manner. But she doesn’t want him to get sick, so she bundles him up with layers and layers of T-shirts…
In the first looks, models were muffed in big puffer jackets with XXL T-shirts over, their necks were wrapped-up in large detachable scarves. Many pieces were decorated with arty motifs, either stiched, embroidered or printed. The Yohji Yamamoto collection has become a real junction where various artists come to express their homage to the designer. Ongoing collaboration with Yuuka Asakura and newly featured Rie Miyazawa. Yohji too has made some sketches and portraits this time.
Then, a series of strapped black jackets and pants comes like a great wine right after the first bite of the main dish. Squeezed volumes on some parts of the jackets, shortened pants bottoms, the pattern-makers took special care in opening vents under the armpits and in the crotch of pants so as to facilitate the movement.
“So many people have been pumping up volumes, strapping up Punk homages, wearing out cloth, and blurring gender boundaries, it’s easy to think it’s all edgy and new, it’s easy to forget that designers like Yohji Yamamoto were there right at the start, pioneering it all. He referenced a few of those greatest hits today, in down-stuffed suiting and buckled parachute shirts, models in fraying knits and oversized coats with skinny, girlish braids (but also, a lot of the time, beards). It all still looked great.”

The vertical stripes
The starting point was to deconstruct a full body jacket into vertical stripes, straight or curved, striding across the different parts of the garment. Trimmed with pipping or raw-edged, these embedded stripes were the underlying element that defined the shape of each jacket. If you open up a vent on some parts, you’ll have to squeeze it somewhere else to balance it all out. A very experimental and advanced tailoring technique was required to accomplish such a task. Then, Yohji asked for all of those vertical stripes to be turned into darts for the colorful printed jackets. Why? Simply, because we needed to see the printed motifs well. So the pattern makers translated the stripes into discreet darts.
The other theme in the collection was about a collaboration with a young artist. The colorful looks in the first half of the show and the drawing sketches on black suits towards the end are the pieces in question.
Yuuka Asakura is a promising painter, studying at Joshibi University in Tokyo.
The drawings of "Skelton Yohji" remind of what his first assistant Tadashi Kubo said once in an interview for Dazed & Confused by Suzanne Madsen:
“The motif was sparked by a conversation with Tadashi Kubo, about what will happen to the brand when the designer retires. Even after he will be gone, he will somehow still be working, or existing as a symbol, a residual image. His spirit and soul will keep on being solicited in many ways. That’s where the whole idea came from. To represent Yohji as a living skull, still working hard, down to the bone!”

YOHJI YAMAMOTO: THIS IS MY DREAM
Notoriously private Japanese fashion design icon Yohji Yamamoto lets his guard down in an exclusive, intimate short documentary film about life and the creative process, from Tokyo to New York.
Opening up about his artistic motivations, his love of music, and his aesthetic vision, the documentary follows Yamamoto through the entire creative cycle of a collection for his revolutionary line in collaboration with adidas, Y-3.
Beginning with the finalization of the collection and styling for the show in Tokyo, followed by his arrival in New York City to oversee the final touches for the presentation of Y-3's Spring/Summer 2010 collection, the documentary turns an intimate eye on Yamamoto during fittings, model castings, guitar-playing, philosophical musings, and interactions with his staff and the global team bringing his ideas to life.

"Yohji City"
With its buildings, its residents, its lights and shadows, its eccentricity and quietness.
The big dresses looked like buildings under construction. The crinolines were made out of metal, wood, plastic, wires and nails, showing through a veil of fabric, making the whole thing look like crash work.
Amy Verner from style.com says: “For all the parlance of garments being well constructed or deconstructed, you rarely hear them described as under construction. But if anyone can transpose the tenuous beauty of unfinished buildings into clothes, Yohji Yamamoto seems the likely choice.”
The buildings are the trees, the skylines are the mountains, none of the architectural monuments are natural but, as far as they’re part of the landscape, they should be considered in equal measure.
In the same way, clothes worn by the residents of a city are to be considered as part of the elements that constitute the urban landscape.
Yohji has always been thinking of the city as a canvas for his collections.
The urban environment requires cohabitation with others and thus, a certain sense of discipline.
Yohji sees that discipline in not disturbing people’s eyes around.
The best way to do it, is to wear black.
The collection was revisiting the history of the “single cloth garment” from Ancient Greece all the way to Medieval Japan.
Each clothing was cut in such smooth curves and lines, dissolving into the HMI pool of light, overexposed onto the white floor.
The citizens of Yohji City were wrapped in beautifully draped fabrics, making way into the canyon of unfinished skyscrapers.

Yōji Yamamoto (山本 耀司, Yamamoto Yōji, born 1943) is a Japanese fashion designer based in Tokyo and Paris. He is among the master tailors whose work is thought to be of genius and has been described as probably the only designer you could name who has 60-year-olds who think he's incredible and 17-year-olds who think he's way cool.. His more prestigious awards for his contributions to fashion include the Japanese Medal of Honor, the Ordre national du Mérite, the Royal Designer for Industry and the Master of Design award by Fashion Group International.
Born in Tokyo, Yamamoto graduated from Keio University with a degree in law in 1966. His further studies in fashion design at Bunka Fashion College led to a degree in 1969.
Yamamoto became an influential fashion designer after making his Paris debut in 1981. His commercially successful main line, Yohji Yamamoto (women/men) and the diffusion line Y's, are especially popular in Tokyo. These two lines are also available at his flagship stores in New York, Paris, and Antwerp, and at high-end department stores worldwide. Yohji Yamamoto Inc. reported in 2007 that the sales of Yamamoto's two main lines average above $100 million annually.

In the same way, clothes worn by the residents of a city are to be considered as part of the elements that constitute the urban landscape. Yohji has always been thinking of the city as a canvas for his collections. The urban environment requires cohabitation with others and thus, a certain sense of discipline. Yohji sees that discipline in not disturbing people’s eyes around. The best way to do it, is to wear black. The collection was revisiting the history of the “single cloth garment” from Ancient Greece all the way to Medieval Japan. Each clothing was cut in such smooth curves and lines, dissolving into the HMI pool of light, overexposed onto the white floor. The citizens of Yohji City were wrapped in beautifully draped fabrics, making way into the canyon of unfinished skyscrapers.

Trimmed with pipping or raw-edged, these embedded stripes were the underlying element that defined the shape of each jacket. If you open up a vent on some parts, you’ll have to squeeze it somewhere else to balance it all out. A very experimental and advanced tailoring technique was required to accomplish such a task. Then, Yohji asked for all of those vertical stripes to be turned into darts for the colorful printed jackets. Why? Simply, because we needed to see the printed motifs well. But she doesn’t want him to get sick, so she bundles him up with layers and layers of T-shirts…
In the first looks, models were muffed in big puffer jackets with XXL T-shirts over, their necks were wrapped-up in large detachable scarves. Many pieces were decorated with arty motifs, either stiched, embroidered or printed. The Yohji Yamamoto collection has become a real junction where various artists come to express their homage to the designer. Ongoing collaboration with Yuuka Asakura and newly featured Rie Miyazawa. Yohji too has made some sketches and portraits this time.
Then, a series of strapped black jackets and pants comes like a great wine right after the first bite of the main dish. Squeezed volumes on some parts of the jackets, shortened pants bottoms, the pattern-makers took special care in opening vents under the armpits and in the crotch of pants so as to facilitate the movement.
“So many people have been pumping up volumes, strapping up Punk homages, wearing out cloth, and blurring gender boundaries, it’s easy to think it’s all edgy and new, it’s easy to forget that designers like Yohji Yamamoto were there right at the start, pioneering it all. He referenced a few of those greatest hits today, in down-stuffed suiting and buckled parachute shirts, models in fraying knits and oversized coats with skinny, girlish braids (but also, a lot of the time, beards). It all still looked great.”

“The motif was sparked by a conversation with Tadashi Kubo, about what will happen to the brand when the designer retires. Even after he will be gone, he will somehow still be working, or existing as a symbol, a residual image. His spirit and soul will keep on being solicited in many ways. That’s where the whole idea came from. To represent Yohji as a living skull, still working hard, down to the bone!”

Opening up about his artistic motivations, his love of music, and his aesthetic vision, the documentary follows Yamamoto through the entire creative cycle of a collection for his revolutionary line in collaboration with adidas, Y-3.

With its buildings, its residents, its lights and shadows, its eccentricity and quietness.
The big dresses looked like buildings under construction. The crinolines were made out of metal, wood, plastic, wires and nails, showing through a veil of fabric, making the whole thing look like crash work.
Amy Verner from style.com says: “For all the parlance of garments being well constructed or deconstructed, you rarely hear them described as under construction. But if anyone can transpose the tenuous beauty of unfinished buildings into clothes, Yohji Yamamoto seems the likely choice.”
The buildings are the trees, the skylines are the mountains, none of the architectural monuments are natural but, as far as they’re part of the landscape, they should be considered in equal measure.
In the same way, clothes worn by the residents of a city are to be considered as part of the elements that constitute the urban landscape.
Yohji has always been thinking of the city as a canvas for his collections.
The urban environment requires cohabitation with others and thus, a certain sense of discipline.
Yohji sees that discipline in not disturbing people’s eyes around.
The best way to do it, is to wear black.
The collection was revisiting the history of the “single cloth garment” from Ancient Greece all the way to Medieval Japan.
Each clothing was cut in such smooth curves and lines, dissolving into the HMI pool of light, overexposed onto the white floor.
The citizens of Yohji City were wrapped in beautifully draped fabrics, making way into the canyon of unfinished skyscrapers.
