Plot: Biopic of J. Edgar Hoover told by Hoover as he recalls his career for a biography. Early in his career, Hoover fixated on Communists, anarchists and any other revolutionary taking action against the U.S. government. He slowly builds the agency's reputation, becoming the sole arbiter of who gets hired and fired. One of his hires is Clyde Tolson who is quickly promoted to Assistant Director and would be Hoover's confidant and companion for the rest of Hoover's life. Hoover's memories have him playing a greater role in the many high profile cases the FBI was involved in - the Lindbergh baby kidnapping, the arrest of bank robbers like John Dillinger - and also show him to be quite adept at manipulating the various politicians he's worked with over his career, thanks in large part to his secret files.

J. Edgar Hoover: No one freely shares power in Washington, D.C.
Agent Stokes: The crimes we are investigating aren't crimes, they are ideas.
Harlan Fiske Stone: Lower the treble, son, you didn't call this meeting, I did.
J. Edgar Hoover: McCarthy was an opportunist not a patriot.
Albert Osborne: Is that all, Mr. Hoover? I have a 2:30 class to teach.::J. Edgar Hoover: No, you don't. Consider your pay doubled; you now work for your country. Congratulations, Dr. Osborne.
Annie Hoover: [Contemptuously to Edgar] I would rather have a dead son than a daffodil for a son.
J. Edgar Hoover: Do I kill everything that I love?
[first lines]::J. Edgar Hoover: Let me tell you something. The SCLC has direct Communist ties. Even great men can be corrupted, can't they? Communism is not a political party. It is a disease. It corrupts the soul, turning men, even the gentlest of men, into vicious evil tyrants.

Charles Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic on May 20-21, 1927 is seen as one of the most important events of the 20th century, but memories have dimmed and, in an age when jet airplanes routinely cross the Atlantic Ocean with hundreds of passengers, we have lost sight of its significance. Accompanied by film footage of Lindbergh's flight, Professor Emerita Janet Lieberman of La Guardia Community College/CUNY gives her childhood recollections of the event and a Brooklyn parade celebrating Lindbergh, which she attended with her family. The magnificent Brooklyn parade took place on June 16, its 22-mile route crowded with 700,000 school children and their parents.
Lindbergh was a little-known air mail pilot based in St. Louis in early January 1927, when he heard about a $25,000 prize being offered to the first non-stop flight between New York and Paris. Lindbergh's historic flight earned him this prize and the adulation of the nation. Radio and newsreel film, new media of the age, spread news of his feat in ways unimaginable only ten years earlier. The 1920s was a decade of ballyhoo and heroes, and the Lone Eagle's transatlantic flight made him the quintessential hero of the era. His momentous feat also became the catalyst for the growth and preeminence of the American aviation industry, overtaking its European rivals.
This is only one piece of the Lindbergh story. To learn more about Lindbergh, including the kidnapping of his son, his associations with Nazi Germany, and support of American isolationism, see the excellent biography "The Flight of the Century: Charles Lindbergh & the Rise of American Aviation" by CUNY Distinguished Professor Thomas Kessner. http://www.oup.com/us/catalog/general/subject/HistoryAmerican/19001945/?view=usa&ci;=9780195320190

Charles Augustus Lindbergh (February 4, 1902 – August 26, 1974), nicknamed Slim, Lucky Lindy, and The Lone Eagle, was an American aviator, author, inventor, military officer, explorer, and social activist.
As a 25-year-old U.S. Air Mail pilot, Lindbergh emerged suddenly from virtual obscurity to instantaneous world fame as the result of his Orteig Prize-winning solo nonstop flight on May 20–21, 1927, made from the Roosevelt Field in Garden City on New York's Long Island to Le Bourget Field in Paris, France, a distance of nearly 3,600 statute miles (5,800 km), in the single-seat, single-engine, purpose-built Ryan monoplane Spirit of St. Louis. As a result of this flight, Lindbergh was the first person in history to be in New York one day and Paris the next. The record setting flight took 33 hours and 30 minutes. Lindbergh, a U.S. Army Air Corps Reserve officer, was also awarded the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his historic exploit.
In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Lindbergh used his fame to promote the development of both commercial aviation and Air Mail services in the United States and the Americas. In March 1932, his infant son, Charles, Jr., was kidnapped and murdered in what was soon dubbed the "Crime of the Century". It was described by journalist H. L. Mencken, as "... the biggest story since the resurrection." The kidnapping eventually led to the Lindbergh family's being "driven into voluntary exile" in Europe, to which they sailed in secrecy from New York under assumed names in late December 1935 to "seek a safe, secluded residence away from the tremendous public hysteria" in America. The Lindberghs returned to the United States in April 1939.
Before the United States formally entered World War II, Lindbergh had been an outspoken advocate of keeping the U.S. out of the world conflict, as had his father, Congressman Charles August Lindbergh, during World War I. Although Lindbergh was a leader in the antiwar America First movement, he nevertheless strongly supported the war effort after Pearl Harbor and flew 50 combat missions in the Pacific Theater of World War II as a civilian consultant, though President Franklin D. Roosevelt had refused to reinstate his Army Air Corps colonel's commission from which he had resigned in April 1941.
In his later years, Lindbergh became a prolific prize-winning author, international explorer, inventor, and environmentalist.
Verdensberømtheder i København (1939)[205] was a Danish short subject produced by the Dansk Film Co.[206] in which Charles Lindbergh as well as Hollywood actors Robert Taylor, Myrna Loy, and Edward G. Robinson all appeared as themselves. The 1938 Paramount film Men with Wings (Fred MacMurray, Ray Milland) featured a replica of the Spirit of St. Louis fashioned from a Ryan B-1 "Brougham"[207] similar to one presented to Lindbergh by the manufacturer, the Mahoney Aircraft Corporation, shortly after the Spirit was retired in April 1928.[208] The 1942 MGM picture Keeper of the Flame (Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy) features Hepburn as the widow of Robert V. Forrest, a "Lindbergh-like" national hero,[209] who was exposed after his death as a secret fascist intending to use his influence—especially over America's youth—to turn the country into a fascist state and eliminate those he deemed as inferior races.
Four years after its 1953 publication, Lindbergh's second book about his flying "partner" served as the basis for the namesake major Hollywood Cinemascope motion picture The Spirit of St. Louis, directed by Billy Wilder and released on April 20, 1957, one month short of the 30th anniversary of the flight to Paris. The Spirit was "portrayed" in the film by three flyable replicas of the Ryan NYP, while Lindbergh was played by veteran American actor and fellow Army aviator James Stewart. [N 9][N 10] In order to accurately depict the transatlantic flight, three replicas at a cost of $1.3 million (equal to more than $11 million in 2013) were made of the Spirit of St. Louis for the various location and studio film units.[210] A similar Ryan Brougham was bought by Stewart and modified with Lindbergh's supervision.
Lindbergh has also been the subject of numerous screen, television, and other documentary films over the years, including Charles A. Lindbergh (1927), a UK documentary by De Forest Phonofilm based on Lindbergh's milestone flight, 40,000 Miles with Lindbergh (1928) featuring Charles A. Lindbergh, and The American Experience—Lindbergh: The Shocking, Turbulent Life of America's Lone Eagle (1988) PBS documentary directed by Stephen Ives.[211][212][213]
The story of Lindbergh and his association with the former German Nazi Party was featured on the Science Channel TV show, Dark Matters: Twisted But True.

"Aviator Charles A. Lindbergh takes off from New York on his solo transatlantic flight between America and Europe and arrives in Paris; newsreels conclude with his return to the U.S."
Public domain film from the Library of Congress Prelinger Archive, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirit_of_St._Louis
The Spirit of St. Louis (Registration: N-X-211) is the custom-built, single engine, single-seat monoplane that was flown solo by Charles Lindbergh on May 20--21, 1927, on the first non-stop flight from New York to Paris for which Lindbergh won the $25,000 Orteig Prize.
Lindbergh took off in the Spirit from Roosevelt Airfield, Garden City (Long Island), New York and landed 33 hours, 30 minutes later at Aéroport Le Bourget in Paris, France, a distance of approximately 3,600 miles (5,800 km.).
Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis is one of the best known aircraft in the world due to the transatlantic flight brought fame to Ryan Airlines, the original Ryan company. But, although the names "Ryan" and "Ryan Airlines" appear on the plane, history has overlooked the other name closely intertwined with the legend of "Lucky Lindy" and his Spirit, Benjamin Franklin Mahoney, owner of Ryan Airlines...
Officially known as the Ryan NYP (for New York to Paris), the single engine monoplane was designed by Donald A. Hall of the aircraft manufacturer Ryan Airlines located in San Diego, California, and was named The Spirit of St. Louis in honor of Lindbergh's supporters from The St. Louis Raquette Club in his then hometown of St. Louis, Missouri. To save design time, the NYP was loosely based on the company's 1926 Ryan M-2 mailplane with the main difference being the 4,000 mile range of the NYP, and as a non-standard design the Government assigned it the registration number N-X-211 (for "experimental"). Hall documented his design in "Engineering Data on the Spirit of St. Louis" which he prepared for the US NACA and is included as an appendix to Lindbergh's 1953 Pulitzer Prize winning book, The Spirit of St. Louis...
Lindbergh believed that multiple engines resulted in a greater chance of failure while a single engine design would give him greater range. To increase fuel efficiency, the Spirit of St. Louis was also one of the most advanced and aerodynamically streamlined designs of its era.
Lindbergh believed that a flight made in a single-seat monoplane designed around the dependable Wright J-5C "Whirlwind" radial engine provided the best chance of success. The Ryan NYP had a fuel capacity of 450 U.S. gallons (1,700 L; 370 imp gal) or 2,385 pounds (1,082 kg) which was necessary in order to have the range to make the anticipated flight non-stop. The large main fuel tank was placed in the forward section of the fuselage, in front of the pilot, which improved the center of gravity. While locating fuel tanks at the front reduced the risk of the pilot's being crushed to death in the event of a crash, this design decision also meant that there could be no front windshield, and that forward visibility would be limited to side windows only...
Lindbergh sat in a cramped cockpit which was 94 cm wide, 81 cm long and 130 cm high (36 in × 32 in × 51 in)... The Spirit of St. Louis was powered by a 223-horsepower (166 kW), air-cooled, 9-cylinder Wright J-5C "Whirlwind" radial engine. The engine was rated for a maximum operating time of 9,000 hours... It was also, for its day, very fuel efficient enabling longer flights carrying less fuel weight for given distances. Another key feature of Lindbergh's radial engine was that it was rated to self-lubricate the engine's valves for 40 hours continuously...

Charles Lindbergh Address On US Neutrality
Charles Augustus Lindbergh (February 4, 1902 -- August 26, 1974) (nicknamed "Slim," "Lucky Lindy" and "The Lone Eagle") was an American aviator, author, inventor, explorer, and social activist.
Lindbergh, then a 25-year old U.S. Air Mail pilot, emerged from virtual obscurity to almost instantaneous world fame as the result of his Orteig Prize-winning solo non-stop flight on May 20--21, 1927, from Roosevelt Field[N 1] located in Garden City on New York's Long Island to Le Bourget Field in Paris, France, a distance of nearly 3,600 statute miles (5,800 km),[2] in the single-seat, single-engine monoplane Spirit of St. Louis. Lindbergh, a U.S. Army reserve officer, was also awarded the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his historic exploit.
In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Lindbergh relentlessly used his fame to help promote the rapid development of U.S. commercial aviation. In March 1932, however, his infant son, Charles, Jr., was kidnapped and murdered in what was soon dubbed the "Crime of the Century" which eventually led to the Lindbergh family fleeing the United States in December 1935 to live in Europe where they remained until the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by the Imperial Japanese Navy. Before the United States formally entered World War II by declaring war on Japan on December 8, 1941, Lindbergh had been an outspoken advocate of keeping the U.S. out of the world conflict, as was his Congressman father, Charles August Lindbergh (R-MN), during World War I, and became a leader of the anti-war America First movement. Nonetheless, he supported the war effort after Pearl Harbor and flew many combat missions in the Pacific Theater of World War II as a civilian consultant, even though President Franklin D. Roosevelt had refused to reinstate his Army Air Corps colonel's commission that he had resigned in April 1941.
In his later years, Lindbergh became a prolific prize-winning author, international explorer, inventor, and environmentalist.

Damaris Reynolds and I met in 2005. For 70 years, my father Hutch had been searching for evidence of the greatest flood in history - China, Jiangsu Provence, August 1931. Hutch wanted to honor his father, Lyt Harnsberger, a Presbyterian Missionary who quit the church to lead the rebuilding of the grand Cabal levees in Gaoyou, where 26 breaks had flooded a 10,000 square mile area. But Hutch did not get to see this discovery, he had died 3 weeks earlier. And so at 1 AM, I googled "Flood, 1931 China photos" and ended up on Charles Lindbergh.com. That's where my life intersected with Damaris, now my dear friend.
Damaris posted her family China story and photos of Charles and Anne Lindbergh staying at their home in Nanjing Sept 1931, when they arrived at the end of his "North to the Orient" flight. He landed in the middle of the flood and Damaris" father Willis peck, was the US Consul General. Lindbergh flew over the floods, photographing and mapping what is called the greatest flood in history. He left his photos and some of the items from his plane at their house (the plane is now in the Smithsonian).
When I saw Damaris photos, a real chill came over me, for I knew this was the grestest flood I had ever seen, 70,0000 square miles, bigger than the state of New York. Then, I recognized the Grand Canal, and enormous ruptures in the levees, and a smokestack from our family albums. I found that Lindbergh flew directly over Gaoyou levee disaster photographing the great levees breaks along the Grand Canal. Damaris held the key to a 70 year old family mystery, in a photo that told it all. This was Lyt's dike - and Lindy had photographed it, both of them were even in the New York Times.
I came to see Damaris as a dear friend, a life messenger of some sort. She is 99 years old now and in our thoughts and prayers. Her smile and sense of humor, the depth of understanding of life and the world, her perspective on history and the realtionship of the US and China. I count Damaris as one of the most special persons I have ever met, her own story colliding with mine exploding into a discovery that my father spent his whole life trying to make. To honor one's father is one of life's greatest privilege, and Damaris allowed me to do so, and to honor my father by in fact paying tribute to his own father. It's a rare gift Damaris bestowed upon me. It resulted in a museum in China, and movie on CCTV 9 telling the story. Less than eight months after I met Damaris, her photos filled a museum in Gaoyou created to honor the heroes of the 1931 flood disaster, Lyt Harnsberger, Charles and Anne Lindbergh, General Wang and Hermit Lin. Damaris' photos were shared in print subsequently by the Shanghai Daily, the Beijing Daily, the Marin County Independent Journal and other publications.
This video honors Damaris, her love of life - we should it at the Lindbergh Symposium in Florida in 2007.
Thank you Damaris - you lit up my life and will be forever in my heart.

Erik Lindbergh, grandson of Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, is a commercial pilot and certified flight instructor, an artist and a speaker. He serves on a number of Non-Profit boards including the Lindbergh Foundation, The XPRIZE Foundation and the Aviation High School in Seattle. Erik serves as a Trustee and Vice President of the X PRIZE Foundation, a non-profit organization that stimulates the creation of a new generation of launch vehicles designed to carry passengers into space. The X PRIZE is fashioned after the Orteig Prize, the aviation incentive prize won by Charles Lindbergh's transatlantic flight in 1927, which created the now $250 billion aviation industry.
A graduate of Emery Aviation College where he received his Aeronautical Science degree, Erik retraced his grandfather's solo flight from New York to Paris in 2002 in a Lancair Certified airplane, which later became Columba. This epic personal journey documented by the History Channel, raised over one million dollars for three charities, garnered half a billion media impressions for the XPRIZE Foundation and prompted a call from the President of the United States for inspiring the country after the tragedy of September 11th.
Erik also suffers from rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a progressive autoimmune disease. RA crippled Erik for 15 years and only recently has he been active again. With the help of a breakthrough biotech drug, Enbrel, Erik has his life back and is in pursuit of his dreams. Using his experience with RA, he now serves as a spokesperson for the Arthritis Foundation, working to educate others about RA.
His most recent endeavour is LEAP, The Lindbergh Electric Airplane Prize. The program is a suite of new technology awards designed to stimulate meaningful advances in the fledgling electric aircraft industry. LEAP will bring electric flight to more people and serves as a vehicle for creating a powerful project-based curriculum that will address the need for effective science, technology, engineering and math education.
