Jason Robert Brown (born June 20, 1970) is an American musical theatre composer, lyricist, and playwright. Brown's music sensibility fuses pop-rock stylings with theatrical lyrics. An accomplished pianist, Brown has often served as music director, conductor, orchestrator, and pianist for his own productions. He has won Tony Awards for his work on Parade and The Bridges of Madison County.
Brown grew up in the suburbs of New York City, and attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York for 2 years. During summer, he attended French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts in Hancock, New York. He said Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Sunday in the Park with George were two of his biggest influences, and had it not been for them, he would have joined a rock band and tried to be Billy Joel.
When Brown was 23, he and a friend were invited to see a musical by Stephen Sondheim himself. At the show, they sat in front of The New York Times' Frank Rich. They went to dinner, and after twenty minutes, Sondheim asked them what they thought of the show: they both were silent. Brown described the dinner after that moment as "many extremely awkward silences punctuated by bursts of frantic, desperate conversation about anything other than the slaughtered elephant in the room." Brown called mutual friend Daisy Prince the next day, asking if there might be any way to repair the damage after the dinner. She and her family decided that Brown should call Sondheim. Brown paraphrased what Sondheim said:

The Last Five Years is a musical written by Jason Robert Brown. It premiered at Chicago's Northlight Theatre in 2001 and was then produced Off-Broadway in March 2002. Since then it has had numerous productions both in the United States and internationally.
The story explores a five-year relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist, and Cathy Hiatt, a struggling actress. The show uses a form of storytelling in which Cathy's story is told in reverse chronological order (beginning the show at the end of the marriage), and Jamie's is told in chronological order (starting just after the couple have first met). The characters do not directly interact except for a wedding song in the middle as their timelines intersect.
The Last Five Years was inspired by Brown's failed marriage to Theresa O'Neill. O'Neill threatened legal action on the grounds the story of the musical represented her relationship with Brown too closely, and Brown changed the song "I Could Be in Love With Someone Like You" to "Shiksa Goddess" in order to reduce the similarity between the character Cathy and O'Neill.
"Five Years" is a song written by David Bowie, recorded on 15 November 1971, and released as the opening track on the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars in 1972.
The song tells of an Earth doomed to destruction in five years and the aftermath of this knowledge. Bowie is rumored to have chosen the length of time, five years, as a result of a dream in which his deceased father told him he must never fly again and would die in five years.
Allmusic describe the track as "easily one of the greatest album-opening songs ever".

Tony nominee Jeremy Jordan and Tony winner Laura Benanti will star as Leo Frank and Lucille Frank in Manhattan Concert Productions' February 16 presentation of Jason Robert Brown and Alfred Uhry's musical Parade at Avery Fisher Hall. Though the show has only a short preparation period, Brown and the cast — which also includes Ramin Karimloo, Katie Rose Clarke, John Ellison Conlee, Joshua Henry, and many more — welcomed the press into a recent rehearsal. The company previewed the songs "The Old Red Hills of Home" and "This Is Not Over Yet," which sound incredible even without the concert's full orchestra and choir.

It's in the key of E Major, as opposed to F Major, given that it is much easier to sing a half step lower. That Ab is now a G. And it's awesome. I don't own anything, and am quite broke, so suing me will not get you far, Mr. Brown. However, if you wanna meet up for coffee, I would be more than happy to have a talk. :)

The Tony-winning composer found his way into the show’s lively opening number with a little help from the Muppets. Jason Robert Brown's most recent Broadway offering was Honeymoon in Vegas, a musical based on the 1992 romantic comedy of the same name. During a recent sitdown at SubCulture, the Tony-winning composer revealed that the adaptation's most difficult song to write was its opening number, "I Love Betsy," which sets up the show's zany plot. It took until the final stretch of the writing process, but Brown finally cracked it open — and he has Jim Henson to thank.

When the legendary director/producer Hal Prince asks you to write a song for his latest musical, you don't say no, no matter how intimidating the task. And for Jason Robert Brown, the three-time Tony winner behind Parade and The Bridges of Madison County, the order was pretty intimidating. For the tune that was going to close out Prince's new career-bio show Prince of Broadway, Brown had to write a number that topped tunes from Sweeney Todd, Fiddler on the Roof, and Show Boat. How'd he do? Just wait 'til you see what's next.

I'll never be a knight in armor with a sword in hand
Or a kamikaze fighter
Don't count on me to storm the barricades and take a
stand
Or hold my ground
You'll never see any scars or wounds
I don't walk on coals, I don't walk on water
I am no prince, I am no saint
I am not anyone's wildest dream
But I can stand behind
And be someone to fall back on
Some comedies
You're bruised and beaten down
And I'm the one
Who's looking for a favor
Still honestly
You don't believe me
But the things I have are the things you need
You look at me like I don't make sense
Like a waste of time
Like it serves no purpose
I am no prince, I am no saint
And if that's what you believe you need
You're wrong, you don't need much
You need someone to fall back on
And I'll be back
I'll take your side
If I'm the only one
I'm used to that
I've been alone
I'd rather be... THE HALF OF US, THE LEAST OF YOU, THE
BEST OF ME...
And I'll be your prince
I'll be your saint
I will go crashing through fences
In your name
I will
I swear
I'll be someone to fall back on
I'LL BE
THE ONE WHO WAITS
And for as long as you let me
I'll be the one you need
I'll be someone to fall back on
Your prince, your saint
The one you believe you need
I'll be, I'll be
Someone to fall back on...
Someone to fall back on....
