Lotte Hass
Lotte Hass (born Charlotte Hildegard Baierl; 6 November 1928 – 14 January 2015) was the second wife of the Austrian naturalist and diving pioneer Hans Hass (1919–2013), and worked as an underwater model and actress in several of his underwater natural history films. She was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Fame and the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame in 2000.
Life and work
When Hans Hass was looking for a secretary for his office in Vienna in the summer of 1947, Lotte Baierl took the position. She had just passed her high school exam and was a big fan of Hass. Lotte got to work next to their office to deal with diving equipment and underwater cameras, because they hoped to be allowed to attend Hass's next expedition. They trained in swimming pools, dived and photographed in the lakes around Vienna, supported and trained by Hass's assistant Kurt Schaefer.
Hans Hass was generally opposed a woman participating in his expeditions. Lotte, who learned not only to dive but to competently handle an underwater camera, asked repeatedly to be included in his expeditions. Her husband finally relented when, as the film company Sascha Wiener insisted that Hass's next documentary would be made more attractive to a wider audience by a pretty female lead.

The film was shot between August 1953 and April 1954 during Hans Hass' Galapagos expedition with his research vessel Xarifa. Lotte Hass is the underwater model and leading actress.
The film shows for the first time the colours of tropical coral reefs (they were filmed at Curacao and Bonaire).
Hass succeeded in filming sperm whales under water for the first time. The footage was very dangerous because it was shot while residents of the Azores were hunting the whales. The bleeding whales were irritated and attacked by sharks.
The music for the individual scenes was written by Arthur Benjamin and played by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Muir Mathieson. It is this soulful music, which underpins some passages such as the dance of the sea lions, that allows the viewer to sense the beauty of the underwater world even more clearly. The film's title music was meant to act as a fanfare signaling the beginning of a new age of underwater exploration by swim divers.
The film is dedicated to Jimmy Hodges, who was as underwater cameraman on board the ship XARIFA and died of oxygen poisoning while filming underwater off Bonaire.

An episode (12th December 1958 -The birth of an island) from the documentary series 'Expedition into the Unknown' by Professor Hans Hass (Austria) an extraordinary dive pioneer and a documentarian . He visited Maldives on his research vessel "Xarifa" with his team of scientist and did numerous dives and research programs.This video shows the nature of Atoll Islands, marine environment and also depicts life of the villagers. It also shows Professor Hans interviewing Mr.Abdullah Afeef who became the temporary president of the short-lived breakaway nation United Suvadive Republic.

Lotte Hass
Lotte Hass (born Charlotte Hildegard Baierl; 6 November 1928 – 14 January 2015) was the second wife of the Austrian naturalist and diving pioneer Hans Hass (1919–2013), and worked as an underwater model and actress in several of his underwater natural history films. She was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Fame and the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame in 2000.
Life and work
When Hans Hass was looking for a secretary for his office in Vienna in the summer of 1947, Lotte Baierl took the position. She had just passed her high school exam and was a big fan of Hass. Lotte got to work next to their office to deal with diving equipment and underwater cameras, because they hoped to be allowed to attend Hass's next expedition. They trained in swimming pools, dived and photographed in the lakes around Vienna, supported and trained by Hass's assistant Kurt Schaefer.
Hans Hass was generally opposed a woman participating in his expeditions. Lotte, who learned not only to dive but to competently handle an underwater camera, asked repeatedly to be included in his expeditions. Her husband finally relented when, as the film company Sascha Wiener insisted that Hass's next documentary would be made more attractive to a wider audience by a pretty female lead.
