First, don't memorize dates and don't memorize quotations. You can look them up. What matters is what happens and why.
1) Understand that the United States of American did not begin with the Declaration of Independence.
2) Learn history through other means than books and teachers. I would like them to learn history through music, through plays, by doing drawings, through architecture.
3) Take on the lab technique. A teacher, Jim Percoco, does this by having students study statues. Give students a photograph or show them a building, or street corner, or neighborhood, and make a mini little documentary or write a play about it or write a paper about it. Don't give students everything. Let them figure it out.
4) Finally, let them have the chance to work with original documents or the nearest facsimile possible. Let them see that these were written by real people, with a paper and pen.
5) Take them to places where things happen. Take them to historic sites.

David Gaub McCullough (pronounced /məˈkʌlə/; born July 7, 1933) is an American author, narrator, historian, and lecturer. He is a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States' highest civilian award.
Born and raised in Pittsburgh, McCullough earned a degree in English literature from Yale University. His first book was The Johnstown Flood (1968); and he has since written eight more on such topics as Harry S Truman, John Adams, and the Brooklyn Bridge. McCullough has also narrated multiple documentaries, as well as the 2003 film Seabiscuit; and he hosted American Experience for twelve years. McCullough's two Pulitzer Prize-winning books, Truman and John Adams, have been adapted by HBO into a TV film and a mini-series, respectively. McCullough's most recent work, The Greater Journey, about Americans in Paris from the 1830s to the 1900s, was released on May 24, 2011.
McCullough was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Ruth (née Rankin) and Christian Hax McCullough. He is of Scotch-Irish descent. He was educated at Linden Avenue Grade School and Shady Side Academy, in his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. One of four sons, McCullough had a "marvelous" childhood with a wide range of interests, including sports and drawing cartoons. McCullough's parents and his grandmother, who read to him often, introduced him to books at an early age. His parents talked openly about history, a topic he feels should be discussed more often. McCullough "loved school, every day"; he contemplated many career choices ranging from architect, actor, painter, writer, lawyer, and even attending medical school.

Give students a photograph or show them a building, or street corner, or neighborhood, and make a mini little documentary or write a play about it or write a paper about it. Don't give students everything. Let them figure it out.
4) Finally, let them have the chance to work with original documents or the nearest facsimile possible. Let them see that these were written by real people, with a paper and pen.
5) Take them to places where things happen. Take them to historic sites.

I would like to tell you the story of a classic American Christmas carol and song, two of my favorites, they both figured in one of the darkest times ever, during the second World War. Shortly before Christmas 1941, Prime Minister Winston Churchill at considerable personal risk crossed the Atlantic in great secrecy to meet with President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The attack on Pearl Harbor had taken place only weeks before. On Christmas Eve, from a balcony at the White House, the two leaders spoke to a crowd of twenty thousand gathered in the twilight. As reported in the Washington Post, "A crescent moon hung overhead To the southward loomed the Washington Monument as the sun dipped behind the Virginia hills."
President Roosevelt pressed a button to light the Christmas tree, then he spoke to the crowd, and by radio, the world was listening. "Our strongest weapon in this war," he said, "is that conviction of the dignity and brotherhood of man which Christmas day signifies." Here in the midst of war, raging, roaring over all the lands and seas, creeping nearer to our hearts and homes, here amid all the tumult, we have tonight the peace of the spirit in each cottage and every generous heart. Here, then, for one night only, should be a brightly lighted island of happiness and peace."
The following morning, Christmas day, the Prime Minister and the President went to church, where with the congregation they joined in singing, "O Little Town of Bethlehem," which Churchill had never heard before.
The words of the hymn, one of the most beloved of Christmas carols, had been written long before by a famous American clergyman, Phillips Brooks, after a visit to the Holy Land. On Christmas Eve in Jerusalem in 1865, Brooks road through the dark by horseback to the place above town where he was told the shepherds had gathered with their flocks. After returning to his church in Philadelphia, in an effort to put down on paper what he had felt that night, Brooks wrote a poem. Then a few days before Christmas, 1868, he asked the organist of the church, Lewis Redner, to put the poem to music, that it might be sung at the Christmas service. Redner tried, but with no success. Christmas Eve he went to bed feeling he had utterly failed. "My brain was all confused," he later said, "but I was roused from sleep late in the night hearing an angel strain. Seizing a piece of music paper I jotted down treble of the tune."

Music is part of our history, it's an expression of who we are and the times we've known. Our highs, our lows, and so much that we love. Take away American music from the American story and you take away a good part of the soul of the story. It's impossible to imagine life in America without it. Without "Shenandoah," or "Amazing Grace," or "Over the Rainbow," or "Oklahoma," or "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," or "America the Beautiful." Or Gershwin, or Copland, or Scott Joplin, or the music of Christmas in America.
I would like to tell you the story of a classic American Christmas carol and song, two of my favorites, they both figured in one of the darkest times ever, during the second World War. Shortly before Christmas 1941, Prime Minister Winston Churchill at considerable personal risk crossed the Atlantic in great secrecy to meet with President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The attack on Pearl Harbor had taken place only weeks before. On Christmas Eve, from a balcony at the White House, the two leaders spoke to a crowd of twenty thousand gathered in the twilight. As reported in the Washington Post, "A crescent moon hung overhead To the southward loomed the Washington Monument as the sun dipped behind the Virginia hills."
President Roosevelt pressed a button to light the Christmas tree, then he spoke to the crowd, and by radio, the world was listening. "Our strongest weapon in this war," he said, "is that conviction of the dignity and brotherhood of man which Christmas day signifies." Sons of an itinerant preacher and a mother who died young, Wilbur and Orville Wright grew up in a small side street in Dayton, Ohio, in a house that lacked indoor plumbing and electricity but was filled with books and a love of learning. The brothers ran a bicycle shop that allowed them to earn enough money to pursue their mission in life: flight. In the 1890s flying was beginning to advance beyond the glider stage, but there were major technical challenges that the Wrights were determined to solve. They traveled to North Carolina’s remote Outer Banks to test their plane because there they found three indispensable conditions: constant winds, soft surfaces for landings, and privacy.
Flying was exceedingly dangerous; the Wrights risked their lives every time they flew in the years that followed. Orville nearly died in a crash in 1908, before he was nursed back to health by his sister, Katharine, an unsung and important part of the brothers’ success and of McCullough’s book. Despite their achievement, the Wrights could not convince the US government to take an interest in their plane until after they demonstrated its success in France, where the government instantly understood the importance of their achievement. Now, in this revelatory book, master historian David McCullough draws on nearly 1,000 letters of family correspondence—plus diaries, notebooks, and family scrapbooks in the Library of Congress—to tell the full story of the Wright brothers and their heroic achievement.
