Ukraine Today has produced an English-language version of Akim Galimov's hard-hitting documentary 'Operation Crimea', which recalls the 2014 Russian invasion and annexation of Ukraine's Crimean peninsula. The documentary, which was produced by 1+1 channel, offers insight into the events surrounding the Russian seizure of Crimea, while providing first-hand accounts of events which would lead to the biggest international security crisis since the Soviet collapse and the end of the Cold War.
To mark the premiere of 'Operation Crimea', Ukraine Today invited the Kyiv spokesperson for the Crimean Tatar community, Ibraim Umerov, to the channel's newsroom to discuss the impact of the ongoing occupation on the peninsula. Umerov outlined the deteriorating human rights situation in Crimea, but stated that while thousands have sought temporary sanctuary from the occupation on the Ukrainian mainland, the Crimean Tatar community would not be intimidated into fleeing their ancestral homeland.

Mainland Russia is one step closer to forging a direct link with Crimea. Drone footage shows the temporary bridge from Taman, on the Russian mainland, to Tuzla Island on the Crimean peninsula. Eventually there will be three bridges. One is already functional. The 19-kilometer long main bridge is expected to open in December 2018 and will connect Kerch in Crimea to mainland Russia, bypassing Ukraine.

The Crimean Peninsula of Ukraine could not stay away from the events that shook the country in recent weeks. The Mayor of Yalta, a member of the Party of Regions, Sergei Ilash has resigned and was replaced by secretary of the city council Sergei Karnaukh. Now the city council asks the Verkhovna Rada to give Yalta a new mayor.
On Monday, the head of the Sevastopol city administration, Vladimir Yatsuba, resigned as well. The official left the Party of Regions too. On February 23, local residents of the city elected the new head, Russian businessman Alexey Chaly.
City prosecutor Igor Pilat appealed to residents of Sevastopol not to respond to calls for separatism. The prosecutor said that law-enforcement agencies were on the side of those people, who realize that crime entails punishment.
Meanwhile, a delegation of the Russian State Duma arrived in the Crimea. According to local journalists, the first statements were the following: Russia introduces a simplified procedure to issue passports, and if the Crimea asks for accession, the request will be considered within the shortest possible period of time.

Russian forces are now reportedly in total control of a Crimean ferry terminal in the town of Kerch, and both Ukrainian and United States' officials say some 6,000 Russian troops are now inside the Crimean peninsula.
The Washington Post reports that the commander of Russia's Black Sea Fleet ordered Ukrainian naval vessels to transfer allegiance to the regional Crimean government or be boarded by Russian forces, a report Moscow dismissed as "utter nonsense," with a Russian ministry spokesman in Moscow saying absolutely no Russian ultimatum has been given to the Ukrainian military in Crimea.
Ukrainian ships, however, have begun preparing to thwart any boarding attempts by setting up fire hoses and tying mattresses along ship railings.
Meanwhile, reports say Russian troops have dug trenches along the narrow land border between Crimea and the rest of Ukraine.
Reuters reports that Ukraine's interim prime minister has urged the West to help keep Crimea part of his country, but he admitted that a Ukrainian military response to Russia's actions was, "not on the table."
The White House said U.S. Vice President Biden called Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on Monday morning in the latest U.S. effort to resolve the crisis.
According to a statement from the vice president's office, Biden reportedly urged Russia to "pull back its forces, support the immediate deployment of international monitors to Ukraine, and begin a meaningful political dialogue with the Ukrainian government."

In the 13th century, it was partly controlled by the Venetians and by the Genovese; they were followed by the Crimean Khanate and the Ottoman Empire in the 15th to 18th centuries, the Russian Empire in the 18th to 20th centuries, Germany during World War II and the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and later the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, within the Soviet Union during most of the rest of the 20th century.

Ukraine Today has produced an English-language version of Akim Galimov's hard-hitting documentary 'Operation Crimea', which recalls the 2014 Russian invasion and annexation of Ukraine's Crimean peninsula. Mainland Russia is one step closer to forging a direct link with Crimea. Drone footage shows the temporary bridge from Taman, on the Russian mainland, to Tuzla Island on the Crimean peninsula. Eventually there will be three bridges. One is already functional. The Crimean Peninsula of Ukraine could not stay away from the events that shook the country in recent weeks. The Mayor of Yalta, a member of the Party of Regions, Sergei Ilash has resigned and was replaced by secretary of the city council Sergei Karnaukh. Now the city council asks the Verkhovna Rada to give Yalta a new mayor. On Monday, the head of the Sevastopol city administration, Vladimir Yatsuba, resigned as well. The official left the Party of Regions too. On February 23, local residents of the city elected the new head, Russian businessman Alexey Chaly. City prosecutor Igor Pilat appealed to residents of Sevastopol not to respond to calls for separatism. Two Russian warships passed through Turkey's Bosphorus Strait on Tuesday, thought to be en-route to the Crimean peninsula. The two ships arrived in Turkish waters on Monday, according to Turkey's state-run news agency. The Bosphorus Strait links the Black Sea to Turkey's Sea of Marmara and ultimately the Atlantic Ocean. Refugees from Ukraine's Slavyansk seek shelter on Crimean Peninsula
Several hundred residents of the flashpoint eastern Ukrainian city of Slavyansk have taken refuge on the Crimean Peninsula. Mostly women and children make up some two-hundred Slavyansk refugees in Crimea. They had to go from place to place to find a shelter as there isn't enough space on the peninsula to accommodate them. Kiev has intensified military operations against those it calls terrorists in eastern Ukraine, especially Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The battles have been focusing in and around Slavyansk in Donetsk province. Many residential areas of the city have been struck, leaving many civilians dead.

City prosecutor Igor Pilat appealed to residents of Sevastopol not to respond to calls for separatism. The prosecutor said that law-enforcement agencies were on the side of those people, who realize that crime entails punishment.
Meanwhile, a delegation of the Russian State Duma arrived in the Crimea. According to local journalists, the first statements were the following: Russia introduces a simplified procedure to issue passports, and if the Crimea asks for accession, the request will be considered within the shortest possible period of time.

Russian forces are now reportedly in total control of a Crimean ferry terminal in the town of Kerch, and both Ukrainian and United States' officials say some 6,000 Russian troops are now inside the Crimean peninsula.
The Washington Post reports that the commander of Russia's Black Sea Fleet ordered Ukrainian naval vessels to transfer allegiance to the regional Crimean government or be boarded by Russian forces, a report Moscow dismissed as "utter nonsense," with a Russian ministry spokesman in Moscow saying absolutely no Russian ultimatum has been given to the Ukrainian military in Crimea.
Ukrainian ships, however, have begun preparing to thwart any boarding attempts by setting up fire hoses and tying mattresses along ship railings.
Meanwhile, reports say Russian troops have dug trenches along the narrow land border between Crimea and the rest of Ukraine.
Reuters reports that Ukraine's interim prime minister has urged the West to help keep Crimea part of his country, but he admitted that a Ukrainian military response to Russia's actions was, "not on the table."

The Washington Post reports that Russian tugboats and warships blocked several Ukrainian naval ships on Monday (March 3), forcing them to stay at port.
Russian forces are now reportedly in total control of a Crimean ferry terminal in the town of Kerch, and both Ukrainian and United States' officials say some 6,000 Russian troops are now inside the Crimean peninsula.
The Washington Post reports that the commander of Russia's Black Sea Fleet ordered Ukrainian naval vessels to transfer allegiance to the regional Crimean government or be boarded by Russian forces, a report Moscow dismissed as "utter nonsense," with a Russian ministry spokesman in Moscow saying absolutely no Russian ultimatum has been given to the Ukrainian military in Crimea.
Ukrainian ships, however, have begun preparing to thwart any boarding attempts by setting up fire hoses and tying mattresses along ship railings.
Meanwhile, reports say Russian troops have dug trenches along the narrow land border between Crimea and the rest of Ukraine.
Reuters reports that Ukraine's interim prime minister has urged the West to help keep Crimea part of his country, but he admitted that a Ukrainian military response to Russia's actions was, "not on the table."
The White House said U.S. Vice President Biden called Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on Monday morning in the latest U.S. effort to resolve the crisis.
According to a statement from the vice president's office, Biden reportedly urged Russia to "pull back its forces, support the immediate deployment of international monitors to Ukraine, and begin a meaningful political dialogue with the Ukrainian government."

The Ukrainian government is making preparations to evacuate troops and their families from Crimea after more Ukrainian bases were taken over by Russian forces on Wednesday.
Western leaders, meanwhile, say they will slap even more sanctions on Russia... if Moscow doesn't back down.
Our Shin Se-min has the details. The head of Ukraine's national security and defense council told reporters in Kiev Wednesday that Ukraine was planning to relocate 25-thousand service personnel and families from the region, effectively surrendering the disputed territory.
His comments came after pro-Russian forces stormed two naval bases in Crimea on Wednesday night and raised the Russian flag.
These were just the latest in a series of takeovers by Russian troops and local self-defense forces using a mixture of attrition and threats.
The attacks on the bases in Crimea came as the United State and Europe sought ways to increase pressure on defiant Russia.
Speaking from the former Soviet republic of Lithuania Wednesday,... U.S. Vice President Joe Biden declared that the U.S. was "absolutely committed" to defending its allies.
"I want to make it clear we stand resolutely with our Baltic allies in support of the Ukrainian people and against Russian aggression. As long as Russia continues on this dark path, they will face increasing political and economic isolation."
The Obama administration and its allies said Wednesday that they are working to devise new and tougher economic penalties to stop Russian President Vladmir Putin from moving forces further into Ukraine's eastern territory.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is scheduled to meet with Putin in Moscow on Thursday to talk about the unfolding diplomatic crisis.

The Bosphorus Strait links the Black Sea to Turkey's Sea of Marmara and ultimately the Atlantic Ocean.
The ships were seemingly escorted by Turkish Coast Guards, and had the numbers 150 and 156 on their hulls.
Also on Tuesday a private Turkish news agency said a Ukrainian frigate had passed through the Dardanelles Strait en route to the Black Sea.
Russian troops have been tightening their stranglehold on Ukraine's Crimean peninsula, openly defying the US and the European Union and rattling world capitals.
Crimea, on the Black Sea, is home to two (m) million mostly Russian-speaking people and landlord for Russia's critical Black Sea Fleet at Sevastopol.
There are an estimated 16-thousand Russian troops in the region.
However, on Tuesday Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered tens of thousands of Russian troops participating in military exercises near Ukraine's border to return to their bases.

Crimean Tatar Phenotypes
The original home of the Crimean Tatars was the Crimean Peninsula. They were deported from the region by the Soviet central authorities in 1944. The deported Crimean Tatars resettled mainly in Uzbekistan, in some areas of Tajikistan and also in the Ukraine, Georgia and Azerbaijan. Beyond the ex-Soviet borders there are some Crimean Tatars in Romania and Turkey. Since 1967, despite difficulties, the Crimean Tatars have started returning to their homeland. -

Lawmakers asked the Russian Foreign Ministry to assist them in forwarding this document to the General Assembly and the Security Council of the United Nations, as well as to the OSCE, PACE and other major international organizations.

The Crimean crisis is an international crisis principally involving Russia and Ukraine over the control of the Crimean Peninsula, which until February 2014 was administered by Ukraine. Currently, the Crimean Peninsula is controlled by the Russian Federation, a status which is not recognized by 100 member states of the United Nations. Crimea is populated by an ethnic Russian majority and a minority of both ethnic Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars. Prior to the crisis, Crimea comprised Ukraine's Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the administratively separate municipality of Sevastopol. The peninsula is located south of the Ukrainian region of Kherson and west of the Russian region of Kuban. It is surrounded by two seas: the Black Sea and the smaller Sea of Azov to the northeast. It is connected to Kherson by the Isthmus of Perekop and is separated from Kuban by the Strait of Kerch. The Arabat Spit is located to the northeast; a narrow strip of land that separates a system of lagoons named Sivash from the Sea of Azov.
Crimea—or the Tauric Peninsula, as it was formerly known—has historically been at the boundary between the classical world and the Pontic-Caspian steppe. Its southern fringe was colonised by the ancient Greeks, the ancient Persians, the ancient Romans, the Byzantine Empire, the Genoese and the Ottoman Empire, while at the same time its interior was occupied by a changing cast of invading steppe nomads, such as the Cimmerians, Scythians, Sarmatians, Goths, Alans, Bulgars, Huns, Khazars, Kipchaks, and the Golden Horde. Crimea and adjacent territories were united in the Crimean Khanate during the 15th to 18th century before falling to the Russian Empire and being included into the Russian Taurida Governorate in 1802.
After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Crimea became a republic within the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic in the USSR. In World War Two it was downgraded to the Crimean Oblast, and in 1954, the Crimean Oblast was transferred to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. It became the Autonomous Republic of Crimea within newly independent Ukraine in 1991, with Sevastopol having its own administration, within Ukraine but outside of the Autonomous Republic. Sovereignty and control of the peninsula became the subject of an ongoing territorial dispute between Russia and Ukraine, with Russia signing a treaty of accession in March 2014 with the self-declared independent Republic of Crimea, absorbing it into the Russian Federation, though this is not recognised by Ukraine or most of the international community.
The classical name Tauris or Taurica is from the Greek Ταυρική, after the peninsula's Scytho-Cimmerian inhabitants, the Tauri. Strabo and Ptolemy refer to the Strait of Kerch as the Bosporus Cimmerius, and to Cimmerium as the capital of the Taurida, whence the peninsula, or its easternmost part, was also named Promontorium Cimmerium.
In English, the Crimean Khanate is referred to as Crim Tartary in the early modern period. The Italian form Crimea (and "Crimean peninsula") also becomes current during the 18th century, gradually replacing the classical name of Tauric peninsula in the course of the 19th century. The omission of the definite article in English ("Crimea" rather than "the Crimea") becomes common during the later 20th century.
The name "Crimea" ultimately, via Italian, takes its origin with the name of Qırım (today's Stary Krym) which served as a capital of the Crimean province of the Golden Horde. The name of the capital was extended to the entire peninsula at some point during Ottoman suzerainty. The origin of the name Qırım itself is uncertain.

Crimea is populated by an ethnic Russian majority and a minority of both ethnic Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars. Prior to the crisis, Crimea comprised Ukraine's Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the administratively separate municipality of Sevastopol. The Russian Federation has organized them as the Crimean Federal District.

In 13th century, after the collapse of Medieval capital of Armenia Ani (Turkey), the Armenian population grouped together and left the town. At first, they settled in the Crimean Peninsula, but there they were threatened by the Tatars. Reaching the Carpathians, they settled in Moldova. For 200 years, they lived in Moldova, Suchava, Botoshan, and Yash, where there were still communities that had not yet merged with Moldovans. However, these communities were not favorable for Armenians either, especially in the 17th century, when the prince declared that all of the local people were Moldovans and that they had to speak Romanian. The Armenians did not accept the order, and some of them went up the Carpathians, where they stayed until moving to Transylvania during the reign of Prince Apafi in 1672. In Transylvania they lived in Georgeni, Dumbraveni, Mercury-Cuic, built town Armenopolis, which is called now Gherla.

The Obama Administration and Putin began instituting a series of sanctions against the other nation. Each side banned lawmakers and other officials from the other country from travel. Further restrictions were placed on business in their territories.
Wayne Madsen is a former NSA contractor, a well-known investigative journalist and author. He writes about international affairs and intelligence.
He has produced several recent works on the crisis in the Ukraine. One article is titled "Independence Referenda Only Count when Washington and its Allies Say They Count." It questions the guidelines American lawmakers use to determine whether or not they will support a vote in another nation. In another article, the journalist claims the pledge of economic support for Ukrainian rebels is a violation of U.S. law.

Toronto—Crimea. Thinking Out Loud about Cultural Differences.
A month ago I returned from a short vacation, which I spent in Crimea. I went there despite the Canadian Government travel advisory, which does not recommend to go there. Despite the fact that it happened one and a half year ago, for the umpteenth time, they tell about armed groups supported by Russian military forces who took control of government buildings, airports and other locations in the Crimean peninsula and about its occupation and annexation.
This video is my thoughts dictated to my cell phone during ten-hour flight from Moscow to Toronto. They are my observations about different cultures. When moving from one culture to another, many things become clear.
For many Canadians and Westerners in general it is an occupied and annexed territory. For some, who are less affected by the local propaganda it is the opposite — a territory freed from the occupation. Why? Watch the video to find an answer.
