There have been five as members of the Batman Family in regular continuity. The original Robin was Dick Grayson, a young circus acrobat whose parents had been killed by mobsters. Bruce Wayne witnessed the murders and took him in as his legal ward to guide him through the tragedy and help him find direction. Grayson would eventually outgrow his position and take the name Nightwing for many years, before eventually becoming a replacement Batman himself. Jason Todd was the second Robin, another orphan, a troubled youth in danger of becoming a street hoodlum until Batman took him in and provided an outlet for his aggression. Jason was murdered by the Joker, a tragedy and failure that haunted Batman for many years. Resurrected during Infinite Crisis, he has since adopted the violent anti-hero persona Red Hood. The third Robin was Tim Drake, notable for seeking the position out instead of being approached for it. He is a great detective himself, and figured out Batman's and Nightwing's secret identities on his own, explaining that Batman needed a Robin to balance him out and prevent him from becoming too dark and gritty. Since then Drake has become Red Robin to strike out on his own. Stephanie Brown, also known as Spoiler and eventually Batgirl was briefly the fourth and only female Robin, although she was fired for disobeying orders. The fifth and most recent Robin is Damian Wayne, Batman's son with Talia al Ghul, an aggressive child trained by the League of Assassins for years who is being trained as a superhero to help him find redemption. Robin's identity has been associated with a number of teams, including the Teen Titans and Young Justice. Robin as Dick Grayson was created by Bob Kane, Bill Finger and Jerry Robinson, first appearing in Detective Comics #38. (1940) Jason Todd first appeared as Robin in Batman #368. (1984) Tim Drake became Robin in Batman #457. (1990) Stephanie Brown took on the position in Robin #126. (2004) Damian Wayne has been Robin since Batman: Battle for the Cowl #3. When the owner of a traveling circus, named Mr. Haly, is confronted by thugs, they ask Mr. Haly to pay a "fine." He refuses to pay. His bestselling attraction, Flying Graysons, are killed "accidentally" while performing that night. The Graysons' young son, Dick, overhears an incriminating conversation between Blade, the killer, and his employer Boss Zucco. Dick plans to call the police. But Batman, who has attended at the show as the millionaire playboy Bruce Wayne, takes in Dick Grayson, instead of immediately pursuing the thugs. Batman trains Dick Grayson, already an excellent acrobat, how to become a crime-fighter. When a period of training is over, Dick is given a red, green, and yellow costume and adopts the identity of Robin, the Boy Wonder. Dick debuts as Batman's sidekick, and the dynamic duo hunt down the extortion gang, and their leader, Boss Zucco. Zucco's new plan is to demolish a skyscraper construction site (the Canin Building), but Robin and Batman defeat the gang in a dangerous battle on the high girders, during which Robin uses a sling to knock one thug off a steel beam and kicks a second gunman off another girder. Zucco is photographed by Robin in the act of pushing Blade to his death; this evidence is given to the police, leading to Zucco's conviction for murder. In the end, Robin swears to be Batman's partner forever.
