Why America Invaded Iraq
Why did America invade Iraq in 2003? Was it for oil? Or was it because Saddam Hussein was a mass-murdering dictator who harbored terrorists and threatened the region with Weapons of Mass Destruction? If it was the former, wouldn't it have been a lot easier to just buy Iraq's oil on the open market? And if it was the latter, why did Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and John Kerry support President Bush?

I can't stop the ads.
This is a recording I made of CNN's coverage of the "Shock and Awe" campaign conducted at that time. I copied this off of my VHS tape. I'm merely uploading this for historical purposes. Most tapes I see of this are only about ten minutes long. This is just over two hours. It covers from 8:19 PM to around 10:30 PM (Baghdad local time). The "Shock and Awe" campaign starts at 9:00 PM or about 40:30 . This video includes post-bombing statements from Secretary of the State Donald Rumsfeld, and Air Force General, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Richard Myers among others. 1:17:22
This is only for historical purposes. It is in no way meant to glorify, or denounce these events. I'm not uploading this for monetary gain. I'm merely sharing this with others who may wish to see it.

In his memoir, "Decision Points," Bush wrote about how he felt sick to his stomach when he found there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
"I felt terrible about it," Bush stated in 2010. "On the other hand, those reports did point out that Saddam Hussein was very dangerous, that he had the capacity to make weapons. I'm convinced that if he were still in power today, the world would be a lot worse off."

If it was the former, wouldn't it have been a lot easier to just buy Iraq's oil on the open market? And if it was the latter, why did Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and John Kerry support President Bush? Noted British historian, Andrew Roberts, has the answers.

However, the conflict continued for much of the next decade as an insurgency emerged to oppose the occupying forces and the post-invasion Iraqi government.[51] An estimated 151,000 to 600,000 or more Iraqis were killed in the first 3–4 years of conflict. The United States officially withdrew from the country in 2011 but became re-involved in 2014 at the head of a new coalition; the insurgency and many dimensions of the civil armed conflict continue.
The invasion began on 20 March 2003, with the U.S., joined by the United Kingdom and several coalition allies, launching a "shock and awe" bombing campaign. Iraqi forces were quickly overwhelmed as U.S. forces swept through the country. The invasion led to the collapse of the Ba'athist government; Saddam was captured in December 2003 and executed by a military court three years later. However, the power vacuum following Saddam's demise and the mismanagement of the occupation led to widespread sectarian violence between Shias and Sunnis as well as a lengthy insurgency against U.S. and coalition forces. The United States responded with a troop surge in 2007 to attempt to reduce the violence. The U.S. began withdrawing its troops in the winter of 2007–08. The winding down of U.S. involvement in Iraq accelerated under President Barack Obama. The U.S. formally withdrew all combat troops from Iraq by December 2011,

Upon arrival to the Diyarbakir airport, you will need to take a taxi to the border (Ibrahim Khalil / Habur). Once you have crossed the Turkish border into Iraqi Kurdistan (Ibrahim Khalil/Habur), you will be greeted by the Kurdish customs officials who will issue you a visa and further information on your destination.
Getting Around Iraqi Kurdistan: Taxi, Bus, and Private Car Hire. If you are mainly interested in staying in a city, taxi is reliable and good value for money. An average charge within a city drive is 2 dollers, as for the Bus it is definitely cheaper. To hire a car with or without driver could be the option for you. You can have your own chauffeur at your disposal throughout your stay. This will offer you the choice to travel short or long distances. While some places are on this list due to armed conflicts and violence, other places are on the list thanks to physical or biological calamities. Regardless of the reasons, the one thing all of these places have in common is that most western governments do not advise travel to them unless it is absolutely necessary. These are the 25 most dangerous places to visit as a tourist. Also, before we continue, just remember, being on this list doesn't necessarily mean the entire country is bad to visit (although it can). Just make sure to check on regional travel warnings.

Erbil International Airport (IATA: EBL, ICAO: ORER), is the main airport of Erbil city in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Erbil International Airport is centrally located on the Silk Road of the Airways. Following the liberation of Iraq in 2003, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) decided to transform Erbil's former military base into a modern civil aviation airport to serve as a major gateway to the world. Erbil International Airport (EIA) officially opened on July 7, 2005, and it welcomed its first IATA carrier on 11th December 2006. The KRG has enacted favorable rules to attract foreign investors and to help citizens of the Kurdistan Region in exile return home. Domestic traffic, as well as regional traffic throughout the expansive Middle East, is growing. Kurdistan's great natural resources of oil, natural gas and other minerals are creating a flourishing and rapidly growing business environment. Kurdistan is previously in exile are returning, bringing with them connections to other lands. There is an ever stronger need for efficient air transport, for passengers as well as cargo. The Erbil area has a stable water supply, and is surrounded by scenic and accessible wilderness lands, with greenery, clean streams, waterfalls and caves. This stands in stark contrast to other Middle Eastern destinations, and visitors will fuel an important tourism industry in Kurdistan. These are some of the reasons that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and EIA have constructed and equipped an airport for the future, with capacity for three million passengers, and one of the world's longest runways, designed to accommodate the Airbus A380 and cargo aircraft of that class. The airport is the culmination of the vision and strategy put in place in 2003.

The bomb blasts in Karbala and Baghdad during the Shia Muslim commemoration of Ashura did more than rock the fragile stability of Iraq - they were a signal to the new power base in the country, the Shias, that their mosques, their shrines and their festivals will be targeted by extremists.
For the first time in three decades, Iraqi Shias were able to mark Ashura - the commemoration of the the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, grandson of the Prophet Mohammed - openly in Karbala.
Cameras followed Shia pilgrims from the UK, USA and Iraq as they wrestled with the decision to travel to Karbala and mark the first free Ashura in three decades.
The 90-minute film records pilgrims' decisions, Ashura itself and the intense emotions of the Shia mourning of Hussain's death. It includes footage of the bombings and their aftermath.

The Greatest Buildings You'll Never See, 19 Priceless Monuments Lost In Conflict (Part 1). (CNN). It is a cruel irony that a region so blessed with the treasures of early human civilizations is also among those most troubled by conflict. As the violence threatens to annihilate some of history's greatest monuments, we count the cost of our irreplaceable losses. Great Mosque of Samarra, Iraq
Once the largest mosque in the world, built in the 9th century on the Tigris River north of Baghdad. The mosque is famous for the Malwiya Tower, a 52-meter minaret with spiraling ramps for worshipers to climb. Among Iraq's most important sites, it even featured on banknotes. The site was bombed in 2005, in an insurgent attack on a NATO position, destroying the top of the minaret and surrounding walls.
The Buddhas of Bamyan, Afghanistan
The most spectacular legacy of Buddhism in the war-torn country, among the tallest standing Buddhas in the world -- the larger at 53 meters, the other 35 -- had survived over 1,500 years since being carved out of sandstone. The Taliban considered the monuments idolatrous and destroyed them with dynamite.
The ancient city of Bosra, Syria
Continually inhabited for 2,500 years, and became the capital of the Romans' Arabian empire. The centerpiece is a magnificent Roman theater dating back to the second century that survived intact until the current conflict. Archaeologists have revealed the site is now severely damaged from mortar shelling.
Norias of Hama, Syria
These 20-meter wide water wheels were first documented in the 5th century, representing an ingenious early irrigation system. Seventeen of the wooden norias (a machine for lifting water into an aqueduct) survived to present day and became Hama's primary tourist attraction, noted for their groaning sounds as they turned. Heritage expertsdocumented several wheels being burned by fighters in 2014.
Citadel of Aleppo, Syria
The fortress spans at least four millennia, from the days of Alexander the Great, through Roman, Mongol, and Ottoman rule. The site has barely changed since the 16th century and is one of Syria's most popular World Heritage sites. The citadel has been used as an army base in recent fighting and several of its historic buildings have been destroyed.
Deir Ez-zor bridge, Syria
This French-built suspension bridge was a popular pedestrian crossing and vantage point for its views of the Euphrates River. It became a key supply line in a battle for the city, and collapsed under shelling. Deir Ez-zor's Siyasiyeh Bridge was also destroyed.
Crac des Chevaliers, Syria
The Crusader castle from the 11th century survived centuries of battles and natural disasters, becoming a World Heritage site in 2006 along with the adjacent castle of Qal'at Salah El-Din. The walls were severely damaged by regime airstrikes and artillery in 2013, and rebels took positions within it.

EXCLUSIVE: VICE News Meets Barack Obama: http://bit.ly/1wT03Bi
The Islamic State, a hardline Sunni jihadist group that formerly had ties to al Qaeda, has conquered large swathes of Iraq and Syria. Previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group has announced its intention to reestablish the caliphate and has declared its leader, the shadowy Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the caliph.
The lightning advances the Islamic State made across Syria and Iraq in June shocked the world. But it's not just the group's military victories that have garnered attention — it's also the pace with which its members have begun to carve out a viable state.
Flush with cash and US weapons seized during its advances in Iraq, the Islamic State's expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken over new areas in northern Iraq, encroaching on Kurdish territory and sending Christians and other minorities fleeing as reports of massacres emerged.
VICE News reporter Medyan Dairieh spent three weeks embedded with the Islamic State, gaining unprecedented access to the group in Iraq and Syria as the first and only journalist to document its inner workings.

When you think of tourism, Iraq does not probably jump to mind. Despite that there is a large Iraq booth at the World Travel Market (WTM) 2011 at Excel in London with a reasonable number of delegates in attendance. Because of this ASIA Travel Tips.com sat down with Fadhil Al-Saaegh , Managing Director of Al-Rafidain Co. Ltd., to ask why Iraq has spent so much to promote the country when from an outsiders perspective there seems to be so much trouble.
We ask whether it is safe, the status of tourism there at the moment, if there are any areas other than Baghdad that are attracting tourism and what the state of national monuments, treasures and other tourist sites are.
Numerous airlines have also started to resume flights to different destinations in Iraq such as Baghdad, Basra and others. ASIA Travel Tips.com asks what the country is doing to attract more airlines etc.

The Iraq War was a protracted armed conflict that began with the 2003 invasion of Iraq by a United States-led coalition. The invasion regime toppled the government of Saddam Hussein. However, the conflict continued for much of the next decade as an insurgency emerged to oppose the occupying forces and the post-invasion Iraqi government. An estimated 151,000 to 600,000 or more Iraqis were killed in

Donald Trump blames George W. Bush for disastrous Iraq war
Donald Trump blasts rival Jeb Bush's brother for launching the Iraq war in 2003.
Donald Trump's debate strategy may pay off in the Palmetto State, where he maintains a sizable lead over his GOP opponents, even after taking former president George W. Bush to the woodshed on Saturday night.
The former president wasn't on stage, but his brother, Jeb, was, and Trump used the elder Bush's deeds in office as a cudgel against the current candidate to the outrage of more than one Republican participating in the debate.
Trump deemed George W. Bush a liar because the WMDs his administration said were in Iraq did not exist and suggested he bore the blame for 9/11 because it happened during his tenure in office.
A survey conducted by the South Carolina House Republican Caucus suggests the evening left Trump with a few bruises but did no real damage to his prospects in the state's Republican primary this weekend.
He's at 33 percent in the poll compared to several taken before the debate but after the New Hampshire primary that had him somewhere between 35 and 42 percent.
The survey conducted by the SC House Republicans does, however, show Jeb Bush improving his standing by several points to 13 percent and putting him one point behind Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, who were both at 14 going into the evening.
A separate Public Policy poll has Trump picking up right where he left off before the debate and Bush in the back of the pack with Ben Carson at seven percent.
In that poll Trump has 35 percent, while Cruz and Rubio each have 18 percent of South Carolina Republicans backing them for president and John Kasich is at 10 percent.
Both polls were put into the field on Sunday after an explosive GOP debate on Saturday night that saw Republican president George W. Bush repeatedly invoked by Trump and defended by both his brother Jeb and Rubio.
'I am not blaming [President Bush], although...the CIA said there was a lot of information that something like that was going to happen. I'm not blaming anybody. It's a tragedy,' he said.
He added: 'Now, could he have done something about it? His CIA knew about things happening.'
Trump also said, 'I'm not blaming anybody' for the false WMD intelligence. 'I'm just saying he went in there, he thought there were weapons of mass destruction, maybe or maybe he didn't.'
The 43rd president of the United States refused to volley the ball back over the net yesterday as he campaigned in South Carolina for his brother.
The former Oval Office holder did appear to allude to his brother's nemesis, though, when he said, 'these are tough times and I know that Americans are angry, but we do not need someone in the Oval Office who mirrors and inflames our anger and our frustrations.'
'Strength is not empty rhetoric. It is not bluster. It is not theatrics. Real strength comes from integrity and character. And in my experience, the strongest person isn't usually the loudest person in the room,' Bush said according to news reports.
Jeb Bush had no problem calling out the real estate tycoon by name in his own remarks, saying again, like he did at the debate, that 'while Donald Trump was building a reality TV show' George was 'building a security apparatus to keep us safe.'
Nationally, Trump is still owning the race as well, a weekly NBC News poll processed by Survey Monkey that dropped this morning finds.
The poll covers all of last week, from the day before the New Hampshire primary, won by Trump, through the day after the debate.
It had Trump with a three-point bounce from the week previous, when he came in a disappointing second in the Iowa caucus behind Ted Cruz.
He ended the week on Feb. 7 at 35 percent. By Feb. 14 he was back up at 38 percent, which was roughly his positioning going into Iowa.

War in Iraq will pay for itself - http://dinarrvnews.net/ This is an old video of two time (13th and 21st) Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfield discussing the funding of the war in Iraq, specifically operation Iraqi Freedom, and also Homeland Security.
Did the United States really say that the war will pay for itself? No one has been able to send me a link to a video or a transcript of what George Bush said. Please watch this video.
Also discussed are the rebuilding of Iraq, coalition of the willing and more.

An estimated 151,000 to 600,000 or more Iraqis were killed in the first 3–4 years of conflict.
The U.S. formally withdrew all combat troops from Iraq by December 2011.
The Bush administration based its rationale for war principally on the assertion that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) and that Saddam's government posed an immediate threat to the United States and its coalition allies. Select U.S. officials accused Saddam of harboring and supporting al-Qaeda, while others cited the desire to end a repressive dictatorship and bring democracy to the people of Iraq.[54][55] After the invasion, no substantial evidence was found to verify the initial claims about WMDs. The rationale and misrepresentation of pre-war intelligence faced heavy criticism within the U.S. and internationally.
As a result of the war, Iraq held multi-party elections in 2005. Nouri al-Maliki became Prime Minister in 2006 and remained in office until 2014. The Maliki government enacted policies that were widely seen as having the effect of alienating the country's Sunni minority and worsening sectarian tensions. In the summer of 2014, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) launched a military offensive in Northern Iraq and declared a worldwide Islamic caliphate, eliciting another military response from the United States and its allies. The Iraq War caused hundreds of thousands of civilian, and thousands of military casualties (see estimates below). The majority of casualties occurred as a result of the insurgency and civil conflicts between 2004 and 2007.

The majority of casualties occurred as a result of the insurgency and civil conflicts between 2004 and 2007.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has once again criticized Turkey’s shooting down of a Russian jet fighter over Syria last month.
Putin was speaking at his annual press conference in Moscow. He said he still doesn’t understand why Turkey shot down the warplane. Putin added that it’s almost impossible for Russia to reach common ground with the Turkish leadership. He also spoke of the situation in Syria. Putin noted that only the Syrian people can decide the future of their country. Elsewhere, the Russian president touched on the 2003 Iraq war. Putin said Iraq’s occupation was aimed at plundering the Arab country’s oil reserves. He added that Daesh has been created to exploit the instability in Iraq to pave the way for stealing the country’s oil.

BE SURE TO WATCH THIS AGAIN WITH THE "CC" SUBTITLES TURNED ON, LOCATED ON THE BLACK TOOLBAR WHERE YOU ALSO EXPAND THE VIDEO TO "THEATER MODE" AND "FULL SCREEN".
On December 13, 2015 we honored Jessica Lynch for her service during the invasion into Iraq in March 2003. She placed her own black POW tag along with her fallen best friend's, Lori Piestewa, gold tag onto the Iraq War Monument here in Cape Coral, Florida.
She is a former Prisoner of War who endured 9 days of captivity, weighing a mere 87 pounds, before being taken to Germany and finally back home to the U.S. Jessica is greatly regarded and loved in southwest Florida for all that she has had to deal with physically and psychologically for years now.
What many people don't realize are some of the details of how difficult her ordeal was. Jessica told all of us herself how she did not eat OR drink ANYTHING during those 9 days, with the exception of one time where she had a small cup of orange juice. That was it the entire time. You can believe that none of us would ever want to go through that, not even voluntarily.
In addition to this, Jessica had the misfortune of being left in a dark, abandoned building, all by herself, for a few of those days. An Iraqi ambulance that she was being transported in had been fired upon, forcing the frightened medics to leave her behind. She was eventually brought again back to the hospital after this lesser known incident she retold personally to people in Fort Myers.
Having a head wound and not always being fully alert as a result, she would often yell or scream once she realized that someone was coming near her in the hospital where she was unable to move or do anything to fend off anyone approaching her. Jessica said that she believed that she was going to die there. She STILL has nightmares of being pursued and chased to this day.
This was the most historic day ever at the Iraq War Monument. Coincidentally, this very date in history was also the same one in 2003 when Saddam Hussein was captured, with that and Jessica's captivity as a POW being the biggest headlines forever remembered during that first year of the liberation of Iraq.

The 2003 Iraq War officially began with a military strategy known as “shock and awe” – technically known as rapid dominance.
Bombing and missile strikes began on March 19th, 2003 and escalated in the following days as US and coalition forces rolled into Iraq.
I was reporting for Inside Edition from the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier as “Shock and Awe” was launched, marking the start of the US military campaign known as “Operation: Iraqi Freedom”.
Steve Shapiro was my videographer for this report.

The media coverage of the Iraq War in 2003 was unprecedented.
The US military issued credentials to hundreds of journalists from around the world and allowed us to “embed” with them so we could attempt to cover the conflict first hand.
CNN anchor Kyra Phillips was assigned to the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier for the build-up and start of the war.
I was also on that aircraft carrier reporting for Inside Edition and interviewed Kyra about the challenges of covering the story from the middle of the Persian Gulf on a warship.
Navy journalist Keith Jones was instrumental in guiding the “embeds” on the USS Abraham Lincoln and also appears in the story.

Why Did Christopher Hitchens Support the Iraq War? On American Power (2003)
In the years after the fatwa issued against Salman Rushdie, Hitchens became increasingly critical of what he called "excuse making" on the left. At the same time, he was attracted to the foreign policy ideas of some on the Republican-right that promoted pro-liberalism intervention, especially the neoconservative group that included Paul Wolfowitz. Significant opposition to the Iraq War occurred worldwide, both before and during the initial 2003 invasion of Iraq by the United States, United Kingdom, and smaller contingents from other nations, and throughout the subsequent occupation. People and groups opposing the war include the governments of many nations which did not take part in the invasion, and significant sections of the populace in

Christopher Hitchens on Reasons for the Iraq War, Justifications, Military, and Media (2005)
The rationale for the Iraq War (i.e. the 2003 invasion of Iraq and subsequent hostilities) has been a contentious issue since the Bush administration began actively pressing for military intervention in Iraq in late 2001. The primary rationalization for the Iraq War was articulated by a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress known as the Iraq Resolution.
The U.S. stated that the intent was to remo

Around this time, he befriended the Iraqi dissident and businessman Ahmed Chalabi. In 2004, Hitchens stated that neoconservative support for US intervention in Iraq convinced him that he was "on the same side as the neo-conservatives" when it came to contemporary foreign policy issues. Hitchens had also been known to refer to his association with "temporary neocon allies".
Following the 11 September attacks, Hitchens and Noam Chomsky debated the nature of radical Islam and the proper response to it. In October 2001, Hitchens wrote criticisms of Chomsky in The Nation. Chomsky responded and Hitchens issued a rebuttal to Chomsky to which Chomsky again responded. Approximately a year after the 11 September attacks and his exchanges with Chomsky, Hitchens left The Nation, claiming that its editors, readers and contributors considered John Ashcroft a bigger threat than Osama bin Laden, and that they were making excuses on behalf of Islamist terrorism; in the following months he wrote articles increasingly at odds with his colleagues.
Christopher Hitchens argued the case for the Iraq War in a 2003 collection of essays entitled A Long Short War: The Postponed Liberation of Iraq, and he held numerous public debates on the topic with George Galloway[85] and Scott Ritter.[86]
Prior to 11 September 2001, and the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, Hitchens was highly critical of President George W. Bush's "non-interventionist" foreign policy. He also criticised Bush's support of intelligent design[87] and capital punishment.[88]
Although Hitchens defended Bush's post-11 September foreign policy, he criticised the actions of US troops in Abu Ghraib and Haditha, and the US government's use of waterboarding, which he unhesitatingly deemed as torture after he was invited by Vanity Fair to voluntarily undergo it.[89][90] In January 2006, Hitchens joined with four other individuals and four organisations, including the American Civil Liberties Union and Greenpeace, as plaintiffs in a lawsuit, ACLU v. NSA, challenging Bush's warrantless domestic spying program; the lawsuit was filed by the ACLU.

THE WAR TAPES
(2006 Iraq War Documentary)
The War Tapes is the first documentary film of the 2003 invasion of Iraq to be produced by the soldiers themselves. The film (released commercially in 2006) follows three New Hampshire National Guard soldiers before, during, and after their deployment to Iraq about a year after the invasion. Their unit was Charlie Company, 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry Regiment (Mountain), which deployed from March 2004 to February 2005.
The three soldiers with cameras featured in the film are SPC Michael Moriarty who signed up in a burst of patriotism after 9/11 and asked to be shipped to Iraq. His colleagues are SGT Stephen Pink, who joined the National Guard to help pay for college, and SGT Zack Bazzi. Two other soldiers, SGT Duncan Domey and SPC Brandon Wilkins, also filmed their entire deployments for the film. In all, 17 soldiers were given cameras and recorded 800 hours of tape in Iraq. Stateside interviews with the soldiers and their families made up an additional 200 hours of tape. The "cast" was narrowed to three soldiers for the final feature length film. They were chosen in part because they were seen by the director and producers as the "main characters".
The film won the prize for Best International Documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival in May 2006 and also Best International Documentary at BRITDOC in July 2006. The documentary was released for sale on DVD May 15, 2007. Moreover, it is possibly the most innovative result of the embedded reporter program. In this case the reporter did not go to Iraq, but provided cameras to the soldiers, and provided direction on filming to them via instant messaging and email.

Was the Iraq War About Oil All Along? Gore Vidal on Dreaming of War: Blood for Oil (2003)

Significant opposition to the Iraq War occurred worldwide, both before and during the initial 2003 invasion of Iraq by the United States, United Kingdom, and smaller contingents from other nations, and throughout the subsequent occupation. People and groups opposing the war include the governments of many nations which did not take part in the invasion, and significant sections of the populace in those that did.
Rationales for opposition include the belief that the war is illegal according to the United Nations Charter, or would contribute to instability both within Iraq and the wider Middle East. Critics have also questioned the validity of the war's stated objectives, such as a supposed link between the country's Ba'athist government and the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, and its possession of weapons of mass destruction "certified" by the Niger uranium forgeries. The latter was claimed by the United States during the run-up to the war, but no such weapons have since been found.
Within the United States, popular opinion on the war has varied significantly with time. Although there was significant opposition to the idea in the months preceding the attack, polls taken during the invasion showed that a majority of US citizens supported their government's action. However, public opinion had shifted by 2004 to a majority believing that the invasion was a mistake, and has remained so since then. There has also been significant criticism of the war from US politicians and national security and military personnel, including generals who served in the war and have since spoken out against its handling.
Worldwide, the war and occupation have been officially condemned by 54 countries and the heads of many major religions. Popular anti-war feeling is strong in these and other countries, including the US' allies in the conflict, and many have experienced huge protests totalling millions of participants.
Critics of the invasion claimed that it would lead to the deaths of thousands of Iraqi civilians and soldiers as well as Coalition soldiers, and that it would moreover damage peace and stability throughout the region and the world.
Another oft-stated reason for opposition is the Westphalian concept that foreign governments should never possess a right to intervene in another sovereign nation's internal affairs (including terrorism or any other non-international affair). Giorgio Agamben, the Italian philosopher, has also offered a critique of the logic of preemptive war.
Others did accept a limited right for military intervention in foreign countries, but nevertheless opposed the invasion on the basis that it was conducted without United Nations' approval and was hence a violation of international law.[2] According to this position, adherence by the United States and the other great powers to the UN Charter and to other international treaties to which they are legally bound is not a choice but a legal obligation; exercising military power in violation of the UN Charter undermines the rule of law and is illegal vigilantism on an international scale. Benjamin B. Ferencz, who served as the U.S.'s Chief Prosecutor of Nazi war crimes at the Nuremberg Trials following World War II, has denounced the Iraq War as an aggressive war (named at Nuremberg as "the supreme international crime") and stated his belief that George W. Bush, as the war's "initiator", should be tried for war crimes.[3]
There was also skepticism of U.S. claims that Iraq's secular government had any links to Al-Qaeda, the Islamic fundamentalist terrorist group considered responsible for the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.
Some expressed puzzlement that the United States would consider military action against Iraq and not against North Korea, which claimed it already had nuclear weapons and had announced that it was willing to contemplate war with the United States. This criticism intensified when North Korea reportedly conducted a nuclear weapons test on October 9, 2006.
There was also criticism of Coalition policy by those who did not believe that military actions would help to fight terror, with some believing that it would actually help Al-Qaeda's recruitment efforts; others believed that the war and immediate post-war period would lead to a greatly increased risk that weapons of mass destruction would fall into the wrong hands (including Al-Qaeda).
Both inside and outside of the U.S., some argued that the Bush Administration's rationale for war was to gain control over Iraqi natural resources (primarily petroleum). These critics felt that the war would not help to reduce the threat of WMD proliferation, and that the real reason for the war was to secure control over the Iraqi oil fields at a time when US links with Saudi Arabia were seen to be at risk. "No blood for oil" was a popular protest cry prior to the invasion in March 2003.

Using a wealth of different sources, Robert Greenwald's 2004 film investigates the motives and pretexts of the administration of former President George W. Bush for going to war in Iraq after 9/11.

Greenwald's film dissects the different catalysts leading to the war, from the media's treatment of the issue to the practice of "data mining." A panel of experts lend their voices to this examination, including CIA analysts, a former CIA director, previous ambassadors and a weapons inspector.

3:33 Just one day after the September eleventh attacks, the Bush administration began its plans for the invasion of Iraq, claiming the country had possession of nuclear weapons; despite a complete lack of evidence.
7:11 The Bush Administration rounded up people who could create talking points for the invasion of Iraq. Those who raised questions against them were simply told to "sit down and shut up"
11:50 The Bush Administration edited and censored the official National Intelligence Estimate, modifying the meanings of revealing facts that would damage their facade.
14:15 Despite the claims that the war in Iraq was part of the war on terror, there are no real connections between Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden. In fact, they were even adversaries
17:42 The CIA's so called defector, Ahmed Chalabi was a political exile from his own country. For Ahmed, the war was simply a way back into Iraq
23:08 At the 2003 state of the union speech, Bush distorted and lied left and right, breaking national law.
29:10 Bush's claims of Hussein's uranium deal with Africa were not only untrue, but vengeful - and very nearly deadly - actions were taken against those who spoke out.
36:06 In Secretary of State Powell's Address to The United States we were shown photos of so called "Chemical Bunkers" that Hussein was apparently using to produce biological weapons, and once again: there was no evidence to support these claims.
45:23 Essentially all information regarding weapons of mass destruction came from one sole source, and that source was the pentagon
53:05 Taking a look back in time, we begin to see suspicious conflictions between what was said then, and before the war.
56:25 The United States spends billions on their search for nothing, while refusing to release an informed cost estimate.
59:12 David Kay chronicles his extensive study and search for evidence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, and how he found nothing but lies.
1:06:42 For those behind the war, war comes first, not last. For them, The United States’ military power should be used whenever trouble arises; and wherever there’s profit to be made.
1:14:00 War is a blunt tool that doesn't work, it has tarnished our image overseas, created countless more terrorists and ruined governments. It is our job as Americans to speak out against the abuse of power, and question everything.

The U.S. stated that the intent was to remove "a regime that developed and used weapons of mass destruction, that harbored and supported terrorists, committed outrageous human rights abuses, and defied the just demands of the United Nations and the world". Additional reasons have been suggested: "to change the Middle East so as to deny support for militant Islam by pressuring or transforming the nations and transnational systems that support it." For the invasion of Iraq the rationale was "the United States relied on the authority of UN Security Council Resolutions 678 and 687 to use all necessary means to compel Iraq to comply with its international obligations".[3]
In the lead-up to the invasion, the U.S. and UK emphasized the argument that Saddam Hussein was developing "weapons of mass destruction" and thus presented a threat to his neighbors, to the U.S., and to the world community. The U.S. stated "on November 8, 2002, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1441. All fifteen members of the Security Council agreed to give Iraq a final opportunity to comply with its obligations and disarm or face the serious consequences of failing to disarm. The resolution strengthened the mandate of the UN Monitoring and Verification Commission (UNMOVIC) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), giving them authority to go anywhere, at any time and talk to anyone in order to verify Iraq's disarmament."[4] Throughout late 2001, 2002, and early 2003, the Bush Administration worked to build a case for invading Iraq, culminating in then Secretary of State Colin Powell's February 2003 address to the Security Council. Shortly after the invasion, the Central Intelligence Agency, Defense Intelligence Agency, and other intelligence agencies largely discredited evidence related to Iraqi weapons as well as links to Al-Qaeda, and at this point the Bush and Blair Administrations began to shift to secondary rationales for the war, such as the Hussein government's human rights record and promoting democracy in Iraq. Opinion polls showed that the population of nearly all countries opposed a war without UN mandate, and that the view of the United States as a danger to world peace had significantly increased. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan described the war as illegal, saying in a September 2004 interview that it was "not in conformity with the Security Council."
Accusations of faulty evidence and alleged shifting rationales became the focal point for critics of the war, who charge that the Bush Administration purposely fabricated evidence to justify an invasion it long planned to launch. Supporters of the war claim that the threat from Iraq and Saddam Hussein was real and that this has later been established. The U.S. led the effort for "the redirection of former Iraqi weapons of mass destruction (WMD) scientists, technicians and engineers to civilian employment and discourage emigration of this community from Iraq."
Other critics have noted that the Iraq War has several similarities with the Korean War and Vietnam War.
The United States officially declared its combat role in Iraq over on August 31, 2010, although several thousand troops remained in the country until all American troops were withdrawn from Iraq by December 2011; between that time American troops also engaged in combat with Iraqi insurgents.

Why Did the Iraq War Start? The Untold Story - Seymour Hersh - Reasons, Justification (2005)

In the days immediately following 9/11, the Bush Administration national security team actively debated an invasion of Iraq. A memo written by Sec. Rumsfeld dated Nov 27, 2001 considers a US-Iraq war. One section of the memo questions "How start?", listing multiple possible justifications for a US-Iraq War.
During 2002 the amount of ordnance used by British and American aircraft patrolling the no-fly zones of Iraq increased compared to the previous years and by August had "become a full air offensive". Tommy Franks, the allied commander, later stated that the bombing was designed to "degrade" the Iraqi air defense system before an invasion.
In October 2002, a few days before the U.S. Senate voted on the Joint Resolution to Authorize the Use of United States Armed Forces Against Iraq, about 75 senators were told in closed session that Iraq had the means of attacking the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S. with biological or chemical weapons delivered by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs.) On 5 February 2003, Colin Powell presented further evidence in his Iraqi WMD program presentation to the UN Security Council that UAVs were ready to be launched against the United States. At the time, there was a vigorous dispute within the U.S. military and intelligence communities as to whether CIA conclusions about Iraqi UAVs were accurate and other intelligence agencies suggested that Iraq did not possess any offensive UAV capability, saying the few they had were designed for surveillance and intended for reconnaissance. The Senate voted to approve the Joint Resolution with the support of large bipartisan majorities on 11 October 2002, providing the Bush administration with a legal basis for the U.S. invasion under U.S. law.
The resolution granted the authorization by the Constitution of the United States and the United States Congress for the President to command the military to fight anti-United States violence. Citing the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, the resolution reiterated that it should be the policy of the United States to remove the Hussein regime and promote a democratic replacement. The authorization was signed by President George W. Bush on 16 October 2002.
Chief UN weapons inspector Hans Blix remarked in January 2003 that "Iraq appears not to have come to a genuine acceptance—not even today—of the disarmament, which was demanded of it and which it needs to carry out to win the confidence of the world and to live in peace." Among other things he noted that 1,000 short tons (910 t) of chemical agent were unaccounted for, information on Iraq's VX nerve agent program was missing, and that "no convincing evidence" was presented for the destruction of 8,500 litres (1,900 imp gal; 2,200 US gal) of anthrax that had been declared.
In the 2003 State of the Union address, President Bush said "we know that Iraq, in the late 1990s, had several mobile biological weapons labs". On 5 February 2003, Secretary of State Colin Powell appeared before the UN to present American evidence that Iraq was hiding unconventional weapons. The French government also believed that Saddam had stockpiles of anthrax and botulism toxin, and the ability to produce VX. In March, Blix said progress had been made in inspections, and no evidence of WMD had been found. Iraqi scientist Rafid Ahmed Alwan al-Janabi codenamed "Curveball", admitted in February 2011, that he lied to the CIA about biological weapons in order to get the US to attack and remove Hussein from power.
In early 2003, the U.S., British, and Spanish governments proposed the so-called "eighteenth resolution" to give Iraq a deadline for compliance with previous resolutions enforced by the threat of military action. This proposed resolution was subsequently withdrawn due to lack of support on the UN Security Council. In particular, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) members France, Germany and Canada and non-NATO member Russia were opposed to military intervention in Iraq, due to the high level of risk to the international community's security, and defended disarmament through diplomacy.

Dude, Where's My Country? is a 2003 book by Michael Moore dealing with corporate and political events in the United States. The title is a satirical reworking of the 2000 film Dude, Where's My Car?.
The book covers many topics and is written in a heavily satirical fashion, in common with much of Moore's work.
In the book, Moore attacks corporate America and President George W. Bush, whom he accuses of destroying "my America of tolerance and peace". He lashes out against the 2003 Iraq War in particular. The Enron Corporation, and particularly Chairman Ken Lay, also received a lot of flak.
Topics covered range from who the Democrats should put up for the presidency (Moore proposes Oprah Winfrey or, surprisingly, General Wesley Clark, once the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO) right through to 'How to talk to your conservative brother-in-law', a guide on how to avoid interpersonal conflicts at Thanksgiving dinner with the family. On page 87 Moore praises Oprah Winfrey for being the only mainstream media to show antiwar footage two months before the war that no other U.S. media would show.
Breaking from some on the left, Moore at one point in his book says that "Mumia probably killed that guy". Activists supporting the Black Panther Party's Mumia Abu-Jamal are demanding Moore substantiate this claim. Moore in a later interview stated that he worded that statement badly, he didn't really believe that Mumia Abu Jamal killed the police officer, and that he'd change it for the paperback release. The book does go on to say "This takes nothing away from the eloquence of his writings or commentary, or the important place he holds on the international political stage". Moore's point is that he says he does not adhere to black and white political 'positions' but to less party political, more "common sense" points of view. A statement probably backed up by the fact that he is at the same time, a member of the National Rifle Association, despite his ardent views on gun control—see Bowling for Columbine.
Many of the views expressed are shared by political writers like Noam Chomsky in his book Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance and a subsequent BBC documentary called The Power of Nightmares—all of which sharply criticise the neo-conservative movement in the U.S.
After publishing Stupid White Men, an earlier work, Michael Moore was accused of not providing references to back up his statements. As a response to this, Dude, Where's My Country? includes thorough references.
