The Whitewater Canal, which was built between 1836 and 1847, spanned a distance of seventy-six miles and stretched from Lawrenceburg, Indiana on the Ohio River to Hagerstown, Indiana.
As with most transportation improvements during the early nineteenth century, industry paved the way within individual states. After successful canal development projects further east in the United States, it would not be long until canals would soon be dug across the Midwest. The opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 paved the way for improvement projects across the United States and changed the course of American transportation history. The Erie Canal was an immediate financial success. This really set the precedent for future canals and proved canals could provide a viable contribution to local economies.
Amidst all of this there was the need for a high-speed transportation system that could link the Whitewater Valley to the Ohio River. Before the canal, farmers had to transport their goods and livestock to Cincinnati, Ohio on badly rutted and often impassable roads. The journey to Cincinnati could take several days.
Canals and navigations are human-made channels for water. In the vernacular both are referred to as 'canals'. The main difference between them is that a navigation parallels a river and shares its drainage basin, while a canal cuts across a drainage divide.
A navigation is a series of channels that run roughly parallel to the valley and stream bed of an unimproved river. A navigation always shares the drainage basin of the river. A vessel uses the calm parts of the river itself as well as improvements, traversing the same changes in height.
A true canal is a channel that cuts across a drainage divide, making a navigable channel connecting two different drainage basins.
Most commercially important canals of the first half of the 19th-century were a little of each, using rivers in long stretches, and divide crossing canals in others. This is true for many canals still in use.
Both navigations and canals use engineered structures to improve navigation:
Whitewater, usually spelled white water in both American and British English, is formed in a rapid, when a river's gradient increases enough to create so much turbulence that air is entrained into the water body, that is, it forms a bubbly or aerated and unstable current; the frothy water appears white. The term is also loosely used to refer to less turbulent, but still agitated, flows.
The term "whitewater" also has a broader meaning, applying to any river or creek itself that has a significant number of rapids. The term is also used as an adjective describing boating on such rivers, such as whitewater canoeing or whitewater kayaking.
Four factors, separately or in combination, can create rapids: gradient, constriction, obstruction and flow rate. Gradient, constriction and obstruction are streambed topography factors and are relatively consistent. Flow rate is dependent upon both seasonal variation in precipitation and snowmelt and upon release rates of upstream dams.

A video of the famous and historic Whitewater Canal in Metamora Indiana. Featuring the canal boat and the Whitewater Valley Railroad. A short cameo of nearby Brookville Lake.
Alhough it looks like a ghosttown in the video (since we had visited during out-of-season), Metamora Indiana is actually a small tourist spot full of small restaurants and shops, all housed in old old 1850's-era buildings. This video concentrates on one of the restored aquaducts which is located in Metamora. This aquaduct allowed passage of a canal boat through the canal, overtop an existing creek (Duck Creek). Apparently the aquaduct is the only known aquaduct still operating in the US. In the summer, you can actually ride a restored canal boat through Metamora, called the Ben Franklin. In a separate video, I've actually recorded this canal boat as it sits in storage within a restored canal lock not far from Metamora.
This historic site at Metamora, Indiana, preserves a 14 mile section of the original 100 mile long canal that was hand dug to promote commerce in southeastern Indiana.

Vacation travel video about destination Soca in Slovenia. The Julian Alps are rugged karst mountains located on the sunny side of the Alps not far from the Mediterranean, and are one of the wildest, untouched regions in Slovenia. The Trenta Valley is the source of one of the most beautiful rivers in the Alps, the Soča in Slovenia, becoming the Isonzo in Italy - that flows from a mountain cave. In Trnovo the river flows into a narrow white-water gorge and large chunks of rock, the result of various earthquakes, lie on the riverbed. Many tributaries feed the Soča, along with the Tolminka River whose sixty metre deep gorge can be seen from the Devil's Bridge. On a trail through the gorge are a variety of plants and insects which Dr. Julius Kugy, a mountaineer and writer, once recorded in met...
While I was on board Norwegian's (NCL) Pride of America and stopping in Kauai, Hawaii I took advantage to do this. Nowhere else in the world will you have the chance to go Tubing down Irrigation Canals! These Canals were originally built to bring fresh mountain water to the old Sugar Plantations. These canals were hand-dug around the year 1870. Throughout the float trip, you will pass through five tunnels! Take note: This excursion is NOT available through the cruise line. You must book it yourself! And yes, this video is sped up. The Life and Death of a Certain K. More about whitewater rafting trips in Goodwin Canyon: http://www.aorafting.com/river/goodwin/welcome.htm Goodwin Canyon is the closest Class IV+ whitewater rafting river to the San Francisco Bay Area. Located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada just east of Oakdale, Goodwin Canyon offers 4 miles of fun whitewater rafting in a narrow, and very unusual volcanic gorge. The run is short and the rapids that are there are not extremely numerous but very enjoyable. The day consists of Class III rapids alternating between swift calms, interrupted by two Class IV+'s that are both powerful and exciting (even intimidating). Each fall in October, water is released from Tullock Lake for a few weeks, to signal Salmon to start heading upstream from the ocean to spawn in the later part of the year. ...

Join us as we chase the last operating Lima locomotive, a former Cincinnati Union Terminal engine. A man named Brian Banta organized this event which runs on two parts of the Whitewater Valley RR line that generally have no service. Just after the caboose excursion ended, we heard CSX activity on the scanner. We got to the middle of town just as the eastbound Q360 was going over the old B&O; bridge. Afterwards we got some fantastic shots of the train as it worked hard on the steep grade east of Connersville! Special thanks to: Brian Banta who organized the event. The Whitewater Valley Railroad who operated the train. My dad for driving and coming up with some great ideas for shots in a hurry for the CSX train. My friend Drew for tagging along and making Lima #25 the first locomotive he'd...

A short documentary about the Missouri Whitewater Association and their annual Clinic for beginner, intermediate and advanced whitewater kayaking and canoeing.
Paddling upstream on the Potomac towards Seneca Breaks. I get to the rocks and faster current. I head over to the Maryland shore and play in the current along the way. (11:30) I beach the boat where I saw some paddlers and their white water boats were disappearing into the woods. The C&O; Canal is about 30 feet from the river at this point. I had read about a place where you can do a loop further upstream by paddling down stream in the river's current, and paddling back upstream via the C&O; Canal and do it all again. Looks like I found the crossover point. I get out of the boat and walk to the canal and sure enough I see some whitewater paddlers head up the canal. Got to try that as soon as I get a helmut. I get back in and head down stream. I cut over to the islands to explore them and see...
