Leslie Marian Uggams (born May 25, 1943) is an American actress and singer. Beginning her career as a child in the early 1950s, Uggams is best recognized for portraying Kizzy Reynolds in the television miniseries Roots (1977), earning Golden Globe and Emmy Award nominations for her performance. She had earlier been highly acclaimed for the Broadway musical Hallelujah, Baby!, winning a Theatre World Award in 1967 and the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 1968.
Later in her career, Uggams appeared opposite Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool (2016), portraying Blind Al, the sharp, foul-mouthed roommate of Reynolds' Wade Wilson.
Uggams was born in Harlem, the daughter of Juanita (Smith), a Cotton Club chorus girl, and Harold Uggams, an elevator operator and maintenance man. Her father was a singer with the Hall Johnson choir and her mother was a dancer. She attended the Professional Children's School of New York and Juilliard. She met her husband, Grahame Pratt while she was performing in Sydney; they married in 1965. After their wedding, the couple decided to reside in New York, in part to avoid Australia's racial segregation laws of that time.

Here is a great performace from the March 6, 1954 episode of "Your Show of Shows". You will never see this on video since only the Sid Caesar clips from that series are being released on DVD. This is just before she retired from the business at the ripe old age of 12. She came back in the early '60s and has had an amazing career, including a lead role in "Roots". This clip is introduced by the episodes guest star, movie actor Zachary Scott. In this clip she performs with The Billy Williams Quartet. This clip is from the last time that the series was broadcast on TV when TVLand first started. The network once focuses on showing truly classic TV and included a lot of classic commercials. ENJOY!

The 400 years of America's slavery and refugee status, demonstrates the greatness of the African American people. From 1619 to 1863, they were stripped of everything related to being human: their culture, their history, childhoods, family ties, etc. These people were kidnapped, transported to a foreign land as FREE laborers and reduced to the status of livestock. Forbidding reading at any cost, was one of the systematic methods to control the slaves. We still see the same influences in modern day school systems all around America. After 20 generations of slavery, African Americans produced the only non-white male to the position of President of the United States of America.

With Peter Marshall and Leslie Uggams. This was the first show even remotely resembling a game to be greenlit by NBC in a year and a half. The show aired at 3 PM, replacing reruns of CHiPs, and the ratings weren't great - but did well enough that NBC moved forward with a huge overhaul of their daytime line - rich with game shows - in 1983. The show lasted a year, and was replaced by the equally experimental Match Game Hollywood Squares Hour.
