November 11 2015 marks the 75th anniversary of the famous raid carried out by the Fleet Air Arm against the Italian Navy in Taranto. At 9pm on 11 November 1940, 21 already obsolete Swordfish aircraft launched from HMS Illustrious and flew 170 miles armed with torpedoes, bombs and flares to sink the Italian ships at anchor in Taranto.
In one night, the Royal Navy succeeded in halving the Italian battleship fleet and gained a tremendous advantage in the Mediterranean for the loss of two aircraft, two aircrew captured and two aircrew killed.
As a result of the strike, the Italians withdrew the bulk of their fleet farther north to Naples. Over half the crews that participated in the attack on Taranto would be killed on other operations within the following 6 months.
There are no living veterans of the raid, which is celebrated each year in the Fleet Air Arm as one of their finest moments.

Toronto is the largest city in Canada and the provincial capital of Ontario. It is located in Southern Ontario on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario. The history of Toronto began in the late 18th century when the British Crown purchased its land from the Mississaugas of the New Credit. The British established a settlement there, called the Town of York, which its lieutenant governor, John Graves Simcoe, designated as the capital of Upper Canada. The city was ransacked in the Battle of York during the War of 1812. In 1834, York was incorporated as a city and renamed Toronto.
The most important places to visit in Toronto are: Niagara Falls (located an hour and a half away from Toronto, awe-inspiring Niagara Falls attracts visitors from around the world), CN Tower (dominating Toronto's skyline, this communication tower stands at a staggering 1,815 feet. Spectacular Toronto views await you at the top), Old City Hall (an important historic landmark of Toronto. It too nearly 20 years to complete its construction in 1899), Royal Ontario Museum (Canada's largest museum of world culture. You can see impressive artifacts and archeological objects from around the world), Casa Loma (a magnificent castle on a hill in the north end of Toronto. Visitors are treated well in restored rooms and gardens) and many more.
This video offers a lot of tips to help you plan the perfect vacation. If you want to save time and money, the most important Toronto travel tip is to compare prices before booking a hotel room or a flight. You can do this for free on http://bookinghunter.com, a site that searches through hundreds of other travel websites in real time for the best travel deals available.

Delphi, Greece Travel - The archaeological site of Delphi is an UNESCO World Heritage site near the modern village of the same name in Greece. In ancient times it was the site of the most important oracle of the god Apollo. Delphi was revered throughout the Greek world as the site of the ομφαλός (omphalos) stone, the centre of the universe. In the inner ἑστία (hestia), or hearth, of the Temple of Delphic Apollo, an άσβεστος φλόγα (eternal flame) burned. After the battle of Plataea, the Greek cities extinguished their fires and brought new fire from the hearth of Greece, at Delphi; in the foundation stories of several Greek colonies, the founding colonists were first dedicated at Delphi.

A pathfinder is placed or dropped into place in order to set up and also run decrease zones, pick-up areas, and helicopter landing websites for air-borne operations, air resupply operations, or other air procedures on behalf of the ground up device leader. Pathfinders initially showed up in The second world war as well as continuously offer a vital duty in today's modern-day military, giving commanders with the choice of flexibly employing air properties.
During the 2nd War of the nations small teams of parachute soldiers were formed right into pathfinder systems, to parachute ahead of the primary force. Their activities were to note the decline zones (DZ) or landing areas (LZ), established radio beacons as a quick guide for the airplane bring the primary pressure as well as to clear and also protect the location as the major force arrive. The systems were formed into 2 firms to work with both airborne divisions.
The 21st Independent Parachute Firm developed in June 1942 and also worked in with the First Airborne Division as well as the 22nd Independent Parachute Firm worked in with the Sixth Airborne Department.
During the Allied invasion of Sicily the 21st Independent Parachute Business parachuted ahead of the major force during Operation Fustian to record the Primosole Bridge on the night 13/14 July 1943. They then took part in Procedure Slapstick landing by sea at Taranto on 9 September. The firm returned to the United Kingdom in December 1943, however left an independent army behind in Italy to work with the 2nd Parachute Brigade. They likewise took part in Use Market Garden landing at Arnhem on the night 17 September 1944. After noting the DZs and also LSs The Firm was caught with the rest of the department in the Oosterbeek Boundary.
The 22nd Independent Parachute Firm were the lead components of the Sixth Airborne department's decline right into Normandy as part of Operation Tonga. [3]
After the battle 21st Independent Parachute Company went as part of the First Airborne Department to Norway to deactivate the German garrison between May and October 1945. It was after that connected to the 6th Airborne Department in Mandate Palestine where it was still offering when dissolved in September 1946.
Article battle the Regular Army's parachute force was lowered to the 16 Parachute Brigade. To supply this development with a pathfinder capacity the Guards Independent Parachute Company was formed in 1948 on the disbandment of Compound Guards Parachute Battalion. The Company set up on a wide variety of operations between 1948 and 1977. It was set up to Borneo during the Borneo Battle where it was made use of supply reinforcement to the SAS and also its professional efficiency resulted in the development of G Sqn of that regiment in 1966.
The pathfinder role in the Territorial Military was proceeded by 16 (Lincoln) Independent Parachute Business as part of 44th Parachute Brigade (V).
Throughout World War II, the pathfinders were a group of volunteers selected within the Airborne units that were specially trained to run navigation services to lead the primary airborne body to the drop areas. The pathfinder teams (sticks) were composed of a team of eight to twelve pathfinders and also a team of 6 bodyguards whose work was to protect the pathfinders while they established their tools. The pathfinder teams lost approximately thirty minutes prior to the main body in order to find designated drop zones and also offer radio as well as aesthetic guides for the major force in order to enhance the precision of the jump. These navigational aids consisted of compass signs, colored panels, Eureka radar sets, and tinted smoke. When they jumped, the pathfinders sometimes would certainly run into less resistance than the follow-up waves of paratroopers, merely since they had the element of shock on their side. When the main body hopped, the pathfinders then joined their initial devices and also fought as standard airborne infantry.

Compilation vid of 168-miles along the West Highland and Great Glen Ways. From Milngavie to Drymen from where the Rob Roy Way also emanates, the first 95-miles take the walker to Fort William from where the residual walk to Inverness is a resultant easier few days trek.
"In early times the great Caledonian forest extended over vast areas, from the extreme western limits of Scotland to the lands adjoining the east coast, and it is doubtless the remants of this forest which are present among the Cairngorm mountains. Relics of the Caledonian forest are in evidence near Fort William, extending across to Rothiemurchus, and farther eastward, and are also found on the Moor of Rannoch and in certain districts of Argyllshire. As a general rule, it is the tree stumps and the roots alone which are present in these peat mosses."
From the 1912 'Charm of the Hills' Seton Gordon also concludes "our theory that the climate is becoming more arctic" - how things have dramatically changed nearly a hundred years later.
Departing Drymen this trek heads over Conic Hill, beyond Balmaha over Craigie Fort, alongside the east bank of Loch Lomond passing the sculpture memorial at Rowardennan then the famous Falls of the Snaid Burn and Rob Roy's cave then towards 'Dalrigh' beneath Ben Lui. It was Robert the Bruce that was attacked on a little heathery field here by the Lord of Lorne and is where he had the Brooch of Lorne torn off his surcoat at this Battle of Dail Righ. The way heads onwards towards Tyndrum, (currently one of Scotland's blue rinse capitals!) and hence towards a viewpoint just above and beyond Bridge of Orchy that generates views of the Black Mount peaks and much more (depending on the weather!). From here the route of the Way can be observed as it heads beyond the Inveroran Hotel over Rannoch Moor towards Ba Bridge. From the limited shelter beneath the bridge it should be remembered that the great deer forest of the Black Mount was once the home of a celebrated White Hind of 'Coireach Ba' that an English King centuries ago ineffectually failed to trap. Theres also a more latter day story of a Black Mount stalker who used to immediately drink the blood of any hind that he had just shot. This custom allegedly made him impervious to the cold!! The way then continues into Glencoe the 'Glen of Weeping' where the treachery of the massacre or rather the scandal of the judicial murder will never be forgotten in Scotland.
Kinlochleven and the Mamore peaks then greet the walker as the trek heads towards the 'Fort'. The Great Glen Way passes Inverlochy Castle and is then followed to the old bridge and St.Columba's Well at Invermoriston. Cumberland's troops butchered the young and old in Glen Moriston among whom was Roderick MacKenzie - one of Prince Charles Edward's bodyguards and also a lookalike. As he fell mortally wounded he cried 'Alas, you have slain your Prince'. His severed head was taken to Cumberland at Fort Augustus, who believed that the Prince had indeed been slain. Cumberland then took the head to London to inform them of the good news! A small roadside cairn commemorates this act of devotion by the Jacobite officer Roderick MacKenzie.
The Way continues to Fort Augustus and onto Drumnadrochit complete with tales of the Loch Ness Monster. This walk then continues by leading the hillwalker to Inverness and indeed ends (although there certainly are other potential endings to the trek) outside Inverness Castle at the monument to Flora MacDonald who is well remembered in Scotish history for her assistance to the Young Pretender.
As regards Bonnie Prince Charlie (the only person to be named after three sheepdogs! - as per Billy Connolly), he is still remembered as one of the most romantic figures in British history as his charm and bravery endeared him to all that met him. In his wanderings over the Scottish mountains as a fugitive he has latterly been posthumously accredited with some first Munro ascents! However, history also recalls him in disguise as Betty Burke wearing - "a flowered linen gown, a light-coloured quilted petticoat, a white apron and a mantle of dun camlet, made after the Irish fashion with a hood"! The Prince aka Betty Burke, then set off for the beach with his party, one of whom was Neil MacDonald who went on to become father of Napoleon's Marshall MacDonald, the Duke of Taranto. Ironically, Flora's stepfather Captain Hugh MacDonald was in charge of the militia 'searching' South Uist and Benbecula for the Prince at that time. The adventures of the 'Young Pretender' however ended in Rome, where he died in 1788 and where according to Seton Gordon's writings 'His tomb is to be seen in Rome, and is still visited by Jacobites".
Anyway, as regards the video, some Wordsworth lines seem appropriate: -
