STORYLINE
Zhao Ziyang, the former Chinese Communist Party leader who oversaw landmark economic reforms but was ousted after the 1989 Tiananmen Square prodemocracy protests, died Monday at a Beijing hospital.
Zhao, 85, who was hospitalised with a lung ailment, died at 0701 (2301 GMT), according to Frank Lu, a prominent human rights activist, citing Zhao's family.
Hours after Zhao's death, China's entirely state-owned media ran brief reports marking the former leader's passing.
There has been little official comment or reports on Zhao, who had lived under house arrest for 15 years.
Zhao, a former premier and dapper, articulate protege of the late supreme leader Deng Xiaoping, helped to forge bold economic reforms in the 1980s that brought China new prosperity and flung open its doors to the outside world.
In the end, he fell out of favour with Deng and was purged on June 24, 1989, after the military crushed the student-led prodemocracy protests. He was accused of "splitting the party" by supporting demonstrators who wanted a faster pace of democratic reform.
Zhao has lived under house arrest since then.
Political commentator Dai Qing said that the purge of Zhao "meant the end of healthy and hopeful reform in China."

China barred dissidents and foreign reporters from a memorial for Zhao Ziyang, a former Communist Party leader ousted in 1989 after sympathising with Tiananmen Square pro-democracy protesters, but about 2,000 mourners were allowed to take part.
Motorcades began arriving before dawn on Saturday at the cemetery for Zhao's funeral service in Beijing.
The government tightened security along roads leading to the cemetery and drivers without passes and invitations were turned away.
The restrictions highlight the communist government's unease about Zhao's status as a symbol of an era of crushed aspirations for a more
democratic system.
The "body farewell ceremony" began at 9 a.m. (0100 GMT) at Babaoshan Cemetery in western Beijing - the main cemetery for revolutionary heroes.
The memorial - a lower-status event than a state funeral - was closed to foreign reporters.
Between 1,500 and 2,000 friends and family were expected to attend, according to sources close to Zhao's family, but no top government leaders
are likely to be there.
Zhao, who died on January 17 at the age of 85, was forced from power in 1989 on charges of "splitting the party" after clashing with other factions over the protests and spent his last 15 years under house arrest.
It isn't clear how Zhao will be officially remembered.
Relatives have reportedly rejected a proposal to say he made "serious mistakes" in the official assessment of his life, traditionally read during the
burial.
The family and the Chinese government are also reportedly at odds over Zhao's final resting place.

SHOTLIST
1. Journalist talking to Bao Tong, the former political secretary to the late Chinese Premier Zhao Ziyang
2. Mid of shelf with photo of former Chinese leader Zhao Ziyang before his arrest
3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Bao Tong, former political secretary to the late Chinese Premier Zhao Ziyang:
"They might not see it but I think that as long as it is being read the impact of it will be there. As long as China has these unresolved issues, people will continue to investigate the questions. When China's problems are some day solved no one will need Zhao Ziyang's book. If people all thought one party rule was good they would shout 'Long live one party rule'. What would still need to be changed?"
4. Close up of fish in fish tank, pull out to Bao Tong talking
STORYLINE:
Just weeks before the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square democracy movement's brutal quelling in Beijing, the Chinese leader ousted for opposing the crackdown, Zhao Ziyang, has broken his silence in a posthumous memoir.
It took hours of secret recordings and years of clandestine planning to get the material smuggled out of China and translated.
A Chinese version will be published later this month, although it won't be sold in China.
Bao Tong, one of Zhao's top aides and the father of the book's editor, said: "They might not see it but I think that as long as it is being read the impact of it will be there. As long as China has these unresolved issues, people will continue to investigate the questions."
The 306-page "Prisoner of the State: The Secret Journal of Premier Zhao Ziyang" was crafted over four years from tapes recorded in secret by Zhao, who lived under tightly monitored house arrest for 15 years before he died in 2005.
It chronicles the events that led up to the 1989 protests and details how party leaders grappled with the situation.

Passengers are facing severe disruption after the Channel Tunnel was closed following a fire on a lorry.
Eurostar and Eurotunnel, which run services through the tunnel, have cancelled all their services for Saturday.
Some passengers said they were evacuated from trains in the tunnel and given gas masks.
No-one was hurt in the fire, which broke out at the French end of the tunnel, Kent Police said.
Eurotunnel, which transports vehicles and freight through the Channel Tunnel, said the alarm had been raised when two CO2 detectors were triggered.
Eurostar, which operates passenger services through the tunnel between Paris, London and Brussels, said 26 trains have been cancelled since 11:00 GMT.
In a statement, it added: "We are sorry but we are unable to run any further trains today. If you were planning to travel today, we advise you to postpone your journey and not to come to the station."
Eurostar's customer care number is 03432 186 186, or +44 1777 777 878 for people outside the UK.
Eurotunnel's information line is +44 8444 63 00 00.
Ben Lawton was evacuated from the train he was on and taken to what he describes as a "makeshift medical centre in Calais".
"We were evacuated off the train inside the tunnel and given gas masks.
"Then we were taken to an airtight concrete room within the tunnel and had to wait for two hours. Then we were taken by coach to Calais."
Johnny Chatterton was travelling by Eurostar from London to Paris when his train was sent back to St Pancras, having been stopped at Ashford.
"We've been told we have to try and book again, possibly for tomorrow," he said.
"There is a queue for 300-400 people here at St Pancras."
John Hope was travelling to Paris with his girlfriend when their train was turned back.
"We were stuck outside the Channel Tunnel for about one hour with no information at all other than smoke had been detected and then we were told we would have to turn back to London," he said.
"This was meant to be a birthday treat for my girlfriend but it has turned into a pretty poor experience all round."
Stephen Hicks' train is heading back towards Paris after it was diverted.
"I'm one of a group of 12 travelling back from from Les Moutiers to Ashford on a fully occupied train," he told the BBC.
"Our train was stopped at Lille and there was confusion over what was happening. We are going to be in Paris for the night but we have no idea where we'll be staying."
The Independent's travel editor, Simon Calder, said it was going to be difficult for people trying to make alternative travel arrangements.
"There aren't that many flights between London and Paris and Brussels on a Saturday afternoon or a Sunday morning. People will be trying to re-book for tomorrow.
"Motorists who were going on the tunnel from Calais to Folkestone will of course be able to just switch to one of the ferries which are operating - I understand that they do still have room."
Eurotunnel spokesman John O'Keefe said inspectors were sent into the tunnel following the alarms being detected.
Eurotunnel also said that passengers on a Calais to Dover train were evacuated from the Channel Tunnel "without incident", following the smoke alert.

As a senior government official, Zhao was critical of Maoist policies and instrumental in implementing free-market reforms, first in Sichuan, subsequently nationwide. He emerged on the national scene due to support from Deng Xiaoping after the Cultural Revolution. He also sought measures to streamline China's bureaucracy and fight corruption, issues that challenged the Party's legitimacy in the 1980s. Zhao Ziyang was also an advocate of the privatization of state-owned enterprises, the separation of the Party and the state, and general market economic reforms. Many of these views were shared by then-general secretary Hu Yaobang.

STORYLINE
Just weeks ahead of the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square democracy movement's brutal quelling, the Chinese leader ousted for opposing the crackdown has broken his silence in a posthumous memoir that gives a rare insight to the inner workings of the Communist Party during a critical time.
It took hours of secret recordings and years of clandestine planning to get the material smuggled out and translated.
And in a conclusion extraordinary for someone who devoted his career to the party, Zhao Ziyang also urges China to become a parliamentary democracy in order to truly modernise.
The 306-page "Prisoner of the State: The Secret Journal of Premier Zhao Ziyang" was crafted over four years from tapes recorded in secret by Zhao, who lived under tightly monitored house arrest for 15 years before dying in 2005.
It chronicles the events that led up to the 1989 protests and details how party leaders grappled with the situation.
It also describes for the first time the loneliness the snowy-haired, bespectacled Zhao, felt while in exile.
While the book covers the same ground others before have explored, the first-person account and intimate details of political bickering and machinations are new.
While it may raise eyebrows among the Communist Party leadership, it is unlikely to cause real waves among the top cadres.
The leaders who took over after Zhao's ouster have marginalised his liberal wing of the party.
Their official verdict, that the crushing of the Tiananmen protests paved the way for China's economic success, is generally accepted among the political and business elite.
A protege of the then-supreme leader Deng Xiaoping, Zhao helped launch China's economic boom in the 1980s through bold reform that brought new prosperity to an economy stagnated by the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution.
But because he clashed with other party factions over the Tiananmen protests, centered around calls for more political freedom and an end to corruption, and was sympathetic to the demonstrators, he was accused of "splitting the party" and purged on June 24, 1989.
Zhao was last seen in public on May 19, 1989, the day before martial law was declared in Beijing, when he made a tearful visit to Tiananmen Square to talk to student hunger strikers.
He famously apologised to them, saying "I have come too late."
Two weeks later, on June 3-4, the military crushed the dissent, killing hundreds and possibly thousands of people.
Bao Pu, one of the book's editors said in an interview with AP Television that the memoir was "absolutely invaluable."
Neither will be sold on the mainland.

STORYLINE:
Zhao Ziyang, the former Communist Party general secretary who became a symbol of China''s reform era of the 1980s, is in poor health, according to a former aide.
Bao Tong, his former secretary, wrote in an essay published on Monday in the Asian Wall Street Journal that Zhao is in "poor health".
The exact state of Zhao''s health isn''t clear. Bao''s essay gave no details.
A foreign ministry spokesman said he had no further information.
The dapper Zhao was the articulate public face of the party''s struggle with social and political change in the late 1980s, fueled by the economic reforms of his mentor, Deng Xiaoping.
He was purged as party leader in 1989 after sympathising with pro-democracy protesters.
He''s since lived under house arrest, a half-forgotten symbol of the reform era, when hopes of political change ended in bloodshed.
Out of sight and power for half a generation, Zhao still holds the potential to deliver a possible shock to China''s communist dictatorship with one event: his death.
Chinese leaders already are trying to suppress demands that they declare the 1989 protests a patriotic movement, overturning the verdict that they were an anti-government riot that had to be crushed.
With the 15th anniversary of the June 4, 1989, crackdown approaching, Zhao''s passing could fuel such demands in a society where the deaths of leaders have traditionally marked major political turning points.

STORYLINE:
Thousands of Hong Kong people held a candlelight vigil on Friday to honour late Chinese Premier Zhao Ziyang, who was ousted in 1989 for sympathising with pro-democracy protesters.
Holding their candles, mourners bowed three times toward a portrait of Zhao in keeping with Chinese tradition.
Organisers said 15,000 turned out for the vigil, but police spokesman Trish Leung put the crowd at 10,000.
Zhao, 85, died on Monday in Beijing after a prolonged illness, and had lived under house arrest for 15 years after being purged for expressing support for the Tiananmen Square pro-democracy protesters in 1989.
Weeks after he visited the student demonstrators in Tiananmen Square Chinese troops cleared the area, killing hundreds.
The mourning for Zhao has been high profile in the formerly British-ruled Chinese territory, which enjoys civil liberties denied in the mainland.
Activists laid a wreath at the Chinese government's local offices and Hong Kong lawmakers observed a brief silence for Zhao on Wednesday despite a warning from China not do so.
Albert Cheng, a pro-democracy legislator, said the crowd had gathered not only to pay their last respects, but also to exercise their freedom of expression.
Friday's vigil was organised by the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of the Patriotic Democratic Movement in China, which was branded "subversive" by Beijing for helping wanted dissidents flee the country after the Tiananmen crackdown.
It was in stark contrast to Beijing's cautious handling of Zhao's death, where state media gave the news scant coverage and police watched as mourners filed into the late leader's Beijing home to pay respect.
On Friday, police officers closely guarded the Beijing neighbourhood where Zhao lived until his death.
Earlier this week, the government defended the Tiananmen Square crackdown, as well as the decision to oust Zhao on charges of "splitting the party."
However, Beijing has agreed to hold a memorial for Zhao at its main cemetery for revolutionary heroes.

The body of former Chinese Communist party leader Zhao Ziyang was cremated on Saturday in Beijing after a memorial service attended by at least one member of China's current leadership, the government announced.
Earlier, Chinese government barred dissidents and foreign reporters from a memorial for Zhao but about 2,000 mourners were allowed to take part.
The government tightened security along roads leading to the cemetery and drivers without passes and invitations were turned away.
The restrictions highlight the communist government's unease about Zhao's status as a symbol of an era of crushed aspirations for a more democratic system.
The "body farewell ceremony" began at 9 a.m. (0100 GMT) at Babaoshan Cemetery in western Beijing - the main cemetery for revolutionary heroes.
The memorial - a lower-status event than a state funeral - was closed to foreign reporters.
Between 1,500 and 2,000 friends and family were expected to attend, according to sources close to Zhao's family.
Jia Qinglin, a member of the party's ruling nine-member Standing Committee, attended the memorial service "on behalf of the leaders of the central authorities ... to bid farewell to the remains of Comrade Zhao and expressed condolences to his families," Xinhua said.
It said other "senior officials" also attended, but didn't give details.
Zhao, who died on January 17 at the age of 85, was forced from power in 1989 on charges of "splitting the party" after clashing with other factions over the protests. He spent his last 15 years under house arrest.

It said other "senior officials" also attended, but didn't give details.
Zhao, who died on January 17 at the age of 85, was forced from power in 1989 on charges of "splitting the party" after clashing with other factions over the protests. He spent his last 15 years under house arrest.

Jan. 17 marks the 10th anniversary of death of former Party
General Secretary Zhao Ziyang.
Around 600 people paid respects at his courtyard home in
Beijing, while a memorial activity was held in Hong Kong.
His family in Beijing prepared gift cards for visitors.
The cards were printed with Zhao’s words.
Please follow our report.
On Saturday, visitors started to show up at Zhao’s residence
in Beijing.
Among the many who went to pay respect were citizens,
the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) history expert Li Rui;
Former director of the State Press and Publication
Administration Du Daozheng;
And retired professor of the Central Party School Du Guang.
Hong Kong’s Apple Daily reported that for 10 years, the
regime has been on high alert on the anniversary of the
death of Zhao Ziyang.
Strict monitoring was conducted towards visitors.
As usual, the police were on guard outside his former
residence.
By the evening, more than 600 people showed up,
the highest number in years.
Former vice premier Tian Jiyun, and former deputy secretary
general of the State Council Bai Meiqing personally paid
tribute at Zhao’s home on Jan. 15.
As usual, wreaths and inscriptions in commemorations
were displayed at Zhao’s home.
His family prepared commemorative gift cards for visitors.
The card was printed with Zhao’s words, "The CCP can’t
monopolize the governing status by its own Constitution."
Zhao’s son-in-law Wang Zhihua explains, that in Chinese
tradition, the third and 10th anniversary of the death are
considered to be very important.
The cards were prepared as commemorative and nostalgia
to his words and deeds.
Wang Zhihua: "It includes his political philosophy.
We print it because we believe his philosophy was correct
and is still right."
Former general secretary Hu Yaobang died on
April 15, 1989,.
Beijing college students’ memorial evolved into a
vigorous democracy movement.
The Communist regime deployed the army on June 4
and initiated the bloody crackdown.
Thousands of people were killed in this tragedy.
This incident which shocked the word was known as the
June 4 Massacre or 1989 Tiananmen Massacre.
Zhao, sympathetic to the student movement, opposed the
forced suppression, but was dismissed in June 1989.
Former director of Chinese Military Academy Press Xin Ziling,
"Zhao Ziyang has had a deep and wide impact.
He had engaged in separating party and government. But the
1989 Massacre put everything back to where it was.
It is a great misfortune in history."
After 15 years of house arrest, Zhao died at home on
Jan. 17, 2005 at the age of 85.
For 10 years, the CCP has considered both Zhao
and the June 4 Massacre as taboo.
The burial of his remains never took place.
Wang Zhihua: "We are still communicating with them
about the burial.
They did not say no, but there is no specific formal saying
yes either."
Hong Kong's South China Morning Post quoted Zhao’s son,
Zhao Wujun, saying that the regime agreed to bury him
in the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery.
But the family wishes to bury him in a public cemetery with
ordinary funeral procedures, no rank or political association.
BBC reported, Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic
Democratic Movements in China (HK Alliance) also held
seminars of commemoration.
The HK Alliance also set up a site in Causeway Bay
calling Hong Kong people to sign a condolence.
HK Alliance spokesman Richard Tsoi, "In China, his name is
probably banned in the official documents or the Internet.
But, we can freely commemorate him in Hong Kong.
We hope the younger generations of China and Hong Kong
will get to know Zhao Ziyang."
Voice of America reported that, mourners have flocked
to Beijing to pay tribute at Zhao Ziyang’s home.
But there are still many dissidents being held under house
arrest and forbidden from joining the commemoration.
Many petitioners are also blocked by the authorities.

Mourners have gathered to mark the 10th anniversary of the death of China's purged former leader, Zhao Ziyang.
More than 100 people braved police surveillance to go to what was once his courtyard home in Beijing.
Mr Zhao was detained after opposing the use of force to end the protests in Beijing's Tiananmen Square in 1989.
The former Communist Party leader was under constant house arrest until his death in 2005, and his name is still rarely mentioned in official circles.
The mourners took flowers and bowed low before photographs of Mr Zhao, in what appeared to be an impromptu ceremony.
Police officers were stationed outside the compound. They allowed mourners to enter the house to pay their respects, but stopped journalists from going in.
Mr Zhao's former adviser, Bao Tong, said that China's current leaders did not know how to deal with Mr Zhao's legacy.
"I think that the government is very conflicted about its opinion of Zhao Ziyang," Mr Bao told Reuters news agency.
"They're afraid that if they do not allow the public to remember him then they will make a mistake, and will be criticised by the public."
But he added that China's leaders were also afraid to allow the public to remember Mr Zhao, as they were worried people would ask them why they decided to force him to step down
In an editorial published on Saturday, the party-backed Global Times newspaper sought to explain the official silence surrounding Mr Zhao and his downfall.
It said the silence should itself be taken as a comment on how the party felt.
"In the past 25 years, China has pursued a path that [Mr] Zhao and his think tanks opposed at that time, becoming the world's second-largest economy. China is using its actions and achievements to answer questions over the sensitive issues," read the article.
Zhao Ziyang was promoted by China's former supreme leader, Deng Xiaoping, who was looking for someone to reform the economy and open up the country to the outside world.
Mr Zhao's position seemed assured when he was made general secretary of the ruling Communist Party in 1987.
But the protests by students and residents in Beijing - and elsewhere across China - two years later revealed deep divisions within the party leadership.
Hundreds of thousands called for democratic reforms in a peaceful demonstration largely focused on a gathering in Tiananmen Square.
Mr Zhao, who had a more liberal attitude than other leaders, favoured a conciliatory approach towards the protesters.
That view eventually lost to those who wanted to bring in the army, and Mr Deng approved the detention of his former favourite.
The crackdown authorised by the authorities killed hundreds in the streets of Beijing.
In a book that is thought to have been compiled from secret recordings made by Mr Zhao while under house arrest, he said the killing of protesters had been a "tragedy".

January 17 is the tenth anniversary of the death of former CCP General Secretary, Zhao Ziyang. The Chinese authorities still monitor related people and stop them offering condolences at Zhao Ziyang's home as before.
According to a Radio Free Asia report, Zhao's former secretary Bao Tong said he was notified by the authorities on the 16th not to accept an interview. Bao said, he was beaten by police at Zhao's home because of condolences 10 years ago. Therefore, he won't go to condole on the 17th at Fuqiang alley.
Beijing dissident Hu Jia also said he was under house arrest since the 14th because of the coming tenth anniversary of Zhao Ziyang's death. They don't want him to condole.
However, Beijing petitioners said they would go as previous years to mourn Zhao without fear of interception.
Zhao's relatives revealed that the Chinese authorities still do not allow his ashes buried even though he passed away ten years ago.
The former CCP General Secretary Zhao Ziyang was dismissed and put under house arrest due to his opposition to the forced suppression of the 1989 Tiananmen Incident. However, mainland people respect him greatly.
Beijing Severe Smog: Foreigners Protest with Placards
In recent days, Beijing encounters its longest and greatest air pollution in 2015. The fine particulate matter in the air is 600 micrograms per cubic meter. Beijing netizens said it is like the end of the world.
The foreigners who are working in Beijing can't bear the severe haze. Several young Ukrainians even protested with placards.
According to Tianya website, these young foreigners held cardboard with a message, "waiting for the wind", "we are waiting for the wind", "we are stars in the haze", etc to express discontent at a square in Beijing.
Student Leaders Including Huang ZhiFeng Held on Remand After Arrest
January 16, four members including the convener Huang Zhifeng from Scholarism went to be arrested in Hong Kong police station. They accept investigation because of involvment in Occupy Central movement and multiple charges. However, they said they did not accept bail. Eventually, they were unconditionally released according to the police procedure.
That day, more than 40 people held yellow umbrellas and raised the slogan to support them outside the police station.
Hong Kong police started to call the organizers of Occupy Central movement in early January to schedule arrest at a specific time in the police station. The first scheduled people including student leaders, the pan Democrats and three people of Occupy Central, number around 50.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has been persecuting
Falun Gong practitioners for 16 years.
The situation had not taken a turn for the better in 2014.
Falun Gong practitioners still faced harassment,
intimidation, abduction, property confiscation, illegal
detention and torture at the hands of the CCP’s 610 Office.
According to Minghui (minghui.org), there have been
continuous reports of Falun Gong practitioners’ deaths
under severe persecution.
In 2014, it was confirmed that 123 practitioners
were persecuted to death.
91 passed away in 2014 and 17 passed away in 2013.
Another 15 died before 2013, but their deaths
were not confirmed until 2014.
This is to say, about 15 mainland Falun Gong practitioners
were persecuted to death every two months in 2014.
The report also stressed that there were still many
uncovered persecution cases due to the CCP’s
information block.
The statistics do not reveal the complete picture
of the deadly tortures to Falun Gong practitioners
in mainland China.
Shandong Villager Hung Himself at Home: Intimidated by Forcible Demolition
On Jan. 3, a Chinese Human Rights Defender website
reported the story of Wang Lixian, a resident
of Shengjia Village, Fei County, Shandong Province.
Wang hung himself at home on Dec. 31, faced with
pressure of home demolition intimidation enforced
by the local CCP government.
The report said that Shengjia Village, where Wang’s home
is located, has been included in a home demolition project
by the local government.
However, the plan encountered strong resistance from
local residents, who were only given little compensation.
Before New Year’s Day, demolition officers intimidated
Wang Lixian, saying that his home would be forcibly
destroyed if he refused to sign the project agreement.
On the afternoon of Dec. 31, Wang learned that the
demolition office had prepared 50 vehicles and 200 people
to demolish his home.
In desperation, Wang hung himself at home.
The report said the local government had been monitoring
Wang’s family to prevent them from petitioning.
All roads leading out of the village were also blocked.
Ten Years After Zhao Ziyang Passed Away, Ashes Left Unburied
Jan. 17, 2015 will mark the 10th anniversary of former
CCP secretary-general Zhao Ziyang’s passing.
Some overseas groups are currently preparing
to commemorate Zhao with events.
A Radio Free Asia report quoted sources who revealed
that Zhao Ziyang’s ashes were still left unburied.
Zhao’s family requested many times that
Zhao’s ashes be buried with his wife.
However, the CCP responded that this would
only be done at the “proper” time.
Currently Zhao Ziyang couple’s ashes are still kept
at their home, located at No. 6, Fuqiang Hutong in Beijing.
Sources close to Zhao’s family said the CCP has not
agreed to bury Zhao and his wife as they are afraid
of Chinese people’s mourning and paying respects
at his gravestone.
During the June Fourth Incident in 1989, Zhao Ziyang
showed sympathy for student protesters
and opposed violent suppression.
For that reason, he was dismissed permanently and spent
the last 15 years of his life under house arrest.

The mid-1980s saw a dramatic relaxation of Communist Party control over China’s economic, political, and intellectual life. It was arguably the most liberal period in the history of the People’s Republic, as a new generation of reformers sought to push the country towards a more open and tolerant system. These same trends, however, alarmed Party hardliners, who made repeated attempts to roll back the tide of liberalization.
For members of the American press corps in Beijing, it was a period of testing the boundaries, challenging the restrictions on news coverage at the heart of the system, and exploring parts of Chinese society that had long been off-limits. Assignment China: the 1980s tells their story.
The episode features interviews with some of the leading journalists who covered China during those years, They include John Burns, Edward Gargan and Ncholas Kristof of the New York Times, Michael Weisskopf and Dan Southerland of the Washington Post, Richard Hornik and Jaime FlorCruz of Time, Michael Parks and Jim Mann of the Los Angeles Times, John Sheahan of CBS News, John Pomfret of the AP, Adi Ignatius of the Wall St. Journal, and Dorinda Elliot of Newsweek.
The film breaks important new ground, with John Burns revealing new details about his detention and expulsion from China in 1986, Mike Wallace’s producer sharing the behind-the-story story of the disastrous CBS "60 Minutes" 1986 interview with Deng Xiaoping, which almost got CBS News kicked out of China, the equally interesting story of how Communist Party chief Zhao Ziyang appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press" in 1987, the saga of the reporters who covered the 1987 unrest in Tibet and were booted out of the region for their efforts, and the way journalists reported the remarkable intellectual and political opening in 1988 which paved the way for the pro-democracy demonstrations in 1989.
With rare archival footage and still photos, Assignment China: the 1980s paints a revealing picture of how the media covered the China story in the years leading up to the crisis in Tiananmen Square.

The Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, commonly known as the June Fourth Incident (六四事件) or '89 Democracy Movement (八九民运) in Chinese,[1] were student-led popular demonstrations in Beijing which took place in the spring of 1989 and received broad support from city residents, exposing deep splits within China's political leadership. The protests were forcibly suppressed by hardline leaders who ordered the military to enforce martial law in the country's capital.[2][3] The crackdown that initiated on June 3–4 became known as the Tiananmen Square Massacre or the June 4 Massacre as troops with assault rifles and tanks inflicted casualties on unarmed civilians trying to block the military's advance towards Tiananmen Square in the heart of Beijing, which students and other demonstrators had occupied for seven weeks. The number of civilian deaths has been estimated at anywhere between hundreds and thousands.[4] The Chinese government condemned the protests as a counter-revolutionary riot, and has largely prohibited discussion and remembrance of the events.[5][6]
The protests were triggered in April 1989 by the death of former Communist Party General Secretary Hu Yaobang, a liberal reformer who was deposed after losing a power struggle with hardliners over the direction of political and economic reforms.[7] University students marched and gathered in Tiananmen Square to mourn. Hu had also voiced grievances against inflation, limited career prospects, and corruption of the party elite.[8] The protesters called for government accountability, freedom of the press, freedom of speech, and the restoration of workers' control over industry.[9][10] At the height of the protests, about a million people assembled in the Square.[11] Most of them were university students in Beijing.
The government initially took a conciliatory stance toward the protesters.[12] The student-led hunger strike galvanized support for the demonstrators around the country and the protests spread to 400 cities by mid-May.[13] Ultimately, China's paramount leader Deng Xiaoping and other party elders resolved to use force.[14] Party authorities declared martial law on May 20, and mobilized as many as 300,000 troops to Beijing.[13]
In the aftermath of the crackdown, the government conducted widespread arrests of protesters and their supporters, cracked down on other protests around China, expelled foreign journalists and strictly controlled coverage of the events in the domestic press. The police and internal security forces were strengthened. Officials deemed sympathetic to the protests were demoted or purged.[15] Zhao Ziyang was ousted in a party leadership reshuffle and replaced with Jiang Zemin. Political reforms were largely halted and economic reforms did not resume until Deng Xiaoping's 1992 southern tour.[16][17] The Chinese government was widely condemned internationally for the use of force against the protesters. Western governments imposed economic sanctions and arms embargoes.
