A frog has photobombed NASA's latest spacecraft launch - and could have croaked in the process.
The silhouette of the ambitious amphibian was captured as the space agency launched its LADEE spacecraft at Wallops Islands Flight Facility in Virginia on September 6.
The frog was likely hanging out at a pool near to the launchpad which stores water for a high pressure sprinkler system to prevent fires after launches and to suppress noise.
The pool would have provided a damp cool place for the now-frazzled frog.
At first there were questions whether the picture was real, but a NASA spokesperson confirmed to Universe Today that the frog was caught by one of its cameras as it was propelled through the air.
'The photo team confirms the frog is real and was captured in a single frame by one of the remote cameras used to photograph the launch,' they said.
The spokesperson added: 'The condition of the frog, however, is uncertain.'
However, a NASA source did tell CNN the creature's last words were: 'Orrrbit, orrrbit.'
LADEE, which stands for Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer, will orbit the moon and send back information about the lunar surface and atmosphere.
The mission cost $280m and hopes to get an insight into moondust, which appears to levitate from the moon's surface and has long mystified scientists.
The now-famous frog is not the first animal to feature in a rocket launch.
Dduring the STS-114 launch, a turkey vulture fatally flew into the shuttle's orange fuel tank, leaving it to fall hundreds of feet to its death.
More recently, the SpaceX Grasshopper test launch startled a herd of cows who were captured stampeding past a camera placed in a field.
And in 2009, a bat who became known as 'Space Bat' was clinging onto the outside tank during the launch of Space Shuttle Discovery, STS-119, to rest a broken wing when the shuttle was launched, killing the unsuspecting animal.

Project Imua students from four University of Hawaii Community Colleges are in the final phases of developing and testing a scientific instrument that is scheduled to be launched into space. On August 11, a rocket carrying a payload designed and built by students from Honolulu Community Colleges, Kapiolani Community Colleges, Kauai Community Colleges and Windward Community Colleges will be launched from Wallops into suborbital flight. The UH Community College team was the only community college whose payload was selected for this launch.

A Minotaur IV rocket as the twenty-sixth dedicated small launch vehicle mission named STP-S26 for the Department of Defense's Space Test Program that was launched at 4:24 p.m., AST, Nov. 19 from Kodiak Launch Complex, LP1 in Kodiak, Alaska.
A team of Air Force, NASA, contractor, and Alaska Aerospace Corporation representatives took part in STP's most complex mission in over 20 years. This mission will advance the state-of-the-art of space technologies which will enhance military operational capability and further our scientific knowledge across the DoD.
The S26 mission is directed by the Department of Defense Space Test Program and implements a number of capabilities aimed at enabling responsive space access for small experimental satellites and payloads.
S26 has seven distinct firsts. These include: The first flight of the STP Standard Interface Vehicle; the first use of Multi-Mission Satellite Operations Center, Ground System Architecture; the first flight of the Minotaur IV Multi-payload Adapter; first use of the Hydrazine Auxiliary Propulsion System to assist the Minotaur IV in obtaining a dual orbit; the first Minotaur IV cubesat deployment; the first cubesat deployed from a free flying EELV Secondary Payload Adapter satellite and the first launch of a Minotaur IV rocket from the Kodiak Launch Complex.
This mission is also a significant milestone for STP because it includes the 500th DoD Space Experiment Review Board experiment flown. The DoD Space Experiment Review Board sets annual payload priorities for the STP to manifest and launch. The S26 mission includes multiple research and development satellites carrying 11 SERB and 16 total experiments.
The SMC Space Development and Test Directorate, located at Kirtland Air Force Base, NM, has a wide spectrum of responsibilities for this mission. It is rarely seen where a single organization is so multi-hatted on a single mission. SDTD's responsibilities include satellite acquisition and payload integration, launch vehicle procurement, range services procurement, ground system development, and on-orbit ops. They will also be providing leadership, oversight, and resource support.

Wallops Flight Facility (WFF) (IATA: WAL, ICAO: KWAL), located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, is operated by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, primarily as a rocket launch site to support science and exploration missions for NASA and other U.S. government agencies. WFF includes an extensively instrumented range to support launches of more than a dozen types of sounding rockets, small expendable suborbital and orbital rockets,high altitude balloon flights carrying scientific instruments for atmospheric and astronomical research and—using its Research Airport—flight tests of aeronautical research aircraft including unmanned aerial vehicles. There have been over 16,000 launches from the range at Wallops since its founding in 1945.
The WFF range supports science missions for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and occasionally for foreign governments and commercial organizations. It also supports development tests and exercises involving United States Navy aircraft and ship-based electronics and weapon systems in the Virginia Capes operating area, near the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay. In addition to its fixed-location instrumentation assets, the WFF range includes mobile radars, telemetry receivers, and command transmitters that can be deployed by aircraft to locations around the world, in order to establish a temporary range where no other instrumentation exists, to ensure safety, and to collect data in order to enable and support suborbital rocket launches from remote sites. The WFF mobile range assets have been used to support rocket launches from locations in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, South America, Africa, Europe, Australia and at sea. Workers at Wallops include approximately 1,000 full-time NASA civil service employees and contractors, 30 U.S. Navy personnel, and 100 NOAA employees.

A frog has photobombed NASA's latest spacecraft launch - and could have croaked in the process.
The silhouette of the ambitious amphibian was captured as the space agency launched its LADEE spacecraft at Wallops Islands Flight Facility in Virginia on September 6.
The frog was likely hanging out at a pool near to the launchpad which stores water for a high pressure sprinkler system to prevent fires after launches and to suppress noise.
The pool would have provided a damp cool place for the now-frazzled frog.
At first there were questions whether the picture was real, but a NASA spokesperson confirmed to Universe Today that the frog was caught by one of its cameras as it was propelled through the air.
'The photo team confirms the frog is real and was captured in a single frame by one of the remote cameras used to photograph the launch,' they said.
The spokesperson added: 'The condition of the frog, however, is uncertain.'
However, a NASA source did tell CNN the creature's last words were: 'Orrrbit, orrrbit.'
LADEE, which stands for Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer, will orbit the moon and send back information about the lunar surface and atmosphere.
The mission cost $280m and hopes to get an insight into moondust, which appears to levitate from the moon's surface and has long mystified scientists.
The now-famous frog is not the first animal to feature in a rocket launch.
Dduring the STS-114 launch, a turkey vulture fatally flew into the shuttle's orange fuel tank, leaving it to fall hundreds of feet to its death.
More recently, the SpaceX Grasshopper test launch startled a herd of cows who were captured stampeding past a camera placed in a field.
And in 2009, a bat who became known as 'Space Bat' was clinging onto the outside tank during the launch of Space Shuttle Discovery, STS-119, to rest a broken wing when the shuttle was launched, killing the unsuspecting animal.

This mission will advance the state-of-the-art of space technologies which will enhance military operational capability and further our scientific knowledge across the DoD.
The S26 mission is directed by the Department of Defense Space Test Program and implements a number of capabilities aimed at enabling responsive space access for small experimental satellites and payloads.
S26 has seven distinct firsts. These include: The first flight of the STP Standard Interface Vehicle; the first use of Multi-Mission Satellite Operations Center, Ground System Architecture; the first flight of the Minotaur IV Multi-payload Adapter; first use of the Hydrazine Auxiliary Propulsion System to assist the Minotaur IV in obtaining a dual orbit; the first Minotaur IV cubesat deployment; the first cubesat deployed from a free flying EELV Secondary Payload Adapter satellite and the first launch of a Minotaur IV rocket from the Kodiak Launch Complex.
This mission is also a significant milestone for STP because it includes the 500th DoD Space Experiment Review Board experiment flown. The DoD Space Experiment Review Board sets annual payload priorities for the STP to manifest and launch. The S26 mission includes multiple research and development satellites carrying 11 SERB and 16 total experiments.
The SMC Space Development and Test Directorate, located at Kirtland Air Force Base, NM, has a wide spectrum of responsibilities for this mission. It is rarely seen where a single organization is so multi-hatted on a single mission. SDTD's responsibilities include satellite acquisition and payload integration, launch vehicle procurement, range services procurement, ground system development, and on-orbit ops. They will also be providing leadership, oversight, and resource support.
