The invalids of the Republic of Vietnam are the most abandoned, most of whomare living in poverty, discrimination and condemnation without any care from the society. They are the object of the Redemptorists mission. Travel video about destination Vietnam.
North Vietnam is still ruled by communism but in the south the hammer and sickle fades into capitalism that is gradually beginning to dominate all. One country and two lifestyles, Vietnam has opened up its borders. It is a country of beautiful landscapes, amicable people and a great cultural heritage.Hanoi is North Vietnam’s lively capital city located in the north of the country and set amid the delta plains of the Red River. The Chua Mot Cot Pagoda is one of the oldest religious buildings in Hanoi and is a temple built upon a single column in the centre of a small lake. On the shores of the Song Huong, Giang in the heart of Vietnam is a former royal city and today’s provincial capital of Hué. Nine mighty canon are the symbolic guards of the historic citadel. Beyond its defences are five hundred hectares that contain the Imperial City and also the Forbidden Purple City. Da Nang’s Cham Museum contains a fine collection of Cham sculpture from the surrounding provinces. It boasts more than three hundred exhibits divided into ten rooms, with sandstone deities, monsters and heavenly dancers. With nearly six million inhabitants, Saigon is also known as Ho Chi Minh City. The Jade Pagoda, the Temple of the Jade Emperor, highlights the country’s religious faith. The interior features Daoism in all its splendour and it was here that it all began, at the junction of the Ben Nghe Canal on the slowly flowing Saigon River. Vietnam is a colourful land that still contains ancient tribes and exotic landscapes – a fascinating paradise located on the exotic edge of South East Asia!

Of all the Southeast Asian countries out there, Vietnam happens to be the trickiest
and I will tell you why.
today I'm going to share with you my top 5 travel survival tips for surviving Vietnam.
Mekong Delta Hanoi Ho Chi Minh City Sapa.
People wearing little conical hats called coolies…
depending on the city grow to or the village,
Vietnam can be a fairly bustling place.
1 beware of theft.
sorry sorry it happens there it happens there a lot. Focus. Know where you're going. Know what's around you.
In the course of around two weeks I met for travelers that had been robbed in various differentnt ways.
Bag snatching.
Taking out a wad of cash, when you're paying a motorbike taxi.
Leaving your backpack at a hotel storage space or luggage space because you're going to take a trekking tour.
Leaving your valuables unattended while you're searching for money to buy a drink I'm going to leave a link here.
I'm going to leave a link right here to my view on travel safety tips for solo travelers.
Counterfeit agencies.
Counterfeit agencies are companies cthat have a logo of reputable company on their store front.
However, in no way affiliated with that company
they're just they're just trying to steal customers from a reputable company.
Usually you can tell because they're just so many of them do not very subtle.
You're going to have to listen to your intuition.
If something sounds wrong or weird then it is.
Avoid avoid..
Go to the places that feel like they're professional.
Where you feel like the people behind the desk are trustworthy.
You can't always go by the company logo or company designs yes signs me nothing in Vietnam.

During the past decade I've traveled in Southeast Asia more than any other region in the world. If I were to recommend one country to visit my shortlist would certainly include Vietnam. From Hanoi to Saigon - or vice versa - there are few countries that offer as much diversity. The following top attractions travel guide outlines all of the best things to do while traveling in Vietnam:
1) I've honestly never met anyone who has regretted visiting Ha Long Bay. With stunning karst peaks and adventure sports aplenty it's the kind of place where you can relax on a boat for several days and not want to come back to land anytime soon.
2) When based in Hoi An there are a plethora of attractions and landmarks worth visiting. Whether on foot - or on a bike - make sure to check out the Japanese covered bridge, Quang Dong Assembly hall and the Assembly Hall of the Fujian Chinese.
3) I've heard of people who literally fly to Vietnam to have an entire wardrobe made. No place in Vietnam is more famous for its custom made tailors than Hoi An. From dresses to shirts and shoes to purses you can get just about anything made here for less than what you'd likely pay back home.
4) Feasting on Vietnamese local delights should be a top priority for anyone visiting the country and what better way to do it than by visiting a local organic farm. Nestled just outside of Hoi An we visited Tra Que for some amazing Vietnamese cuisine.
5) For those with an adventurous streak having the opportunity to cruise down the Mekong Delta on a boat is an experience you'll never forget. To avoid getting a sunburn be sure to put on a conical hat - it only costs about a dollar!
6) If you've ever wondered what it is like to be in a dynamic and chaotic city look no further than Saigon. With plenty of attractions ranging from shopping to museums, there is never a shortage of things to do in the city.
7) Taking the bus in Vietnam is a bit of a nightmare considering the road conditions, traffic congestion and liberal use of the horns. The alternative? Taking a train. Our of our favorite train trips in Vietnam was traveling from Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) to Nha Trang.
8) For the adventure sports junky the opportunity to go sea kayaking in Ha Long Bay is not to be missed. If you take a boat tour around Ha Long Bay for 2 to 3 days it should almost certainly be included on your itinerary.
9) Eating authentic and cheap Vietnamese cuisine is one of the things I miss the most about traveling in Vietnam. If you head over to the Bale Wel in Hoi An you can make yourself special rolls with country pancakes, spring rolls, satay, kimchi and other ingredients.
10) If there is one place in Vietnam I'd recommend more than anywhere else it is hands down Sapa. With breathtaking scenery, rolling hills and rice terraces it is worth exploring either on a one day hike or a several day trekking expedition. In this section we show you our first leg of the journey heading from Sapa to Lao Chai village.
11) If you have the opportunity be sure to listen to a live performance of traditional Vietnamese music.
12) The floating markets in the Mekong Delta region are fascinating. Bustling with activity you'll have a chance to purchase iced coffee and other refreshments.
13) Checking out the Central market in Hoi An allows you to experience what a local market is like versus one aimed towards a tourist.
14) Having the chance to learn how to cook and prepare Vietnamese cuisine is inexpensive and fun. There are plenty of cooking schools to choose from but we decided to go with Green Moss.
15) I've already waxed on and marveled about Sapa but it is worth mentioning again that if you have the opportunity to linger be sure to get a hotel room with a view.
16) Finally, we prefer the trains but taking a night bus - at least once - in Vietnam is certainly an experience you'll never forget. With all of the swerving and honking don't expect to get much sleep.
This is part of our Travel in Vietnam series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Vietnamese culture, Vietnamese arts, Vietnamese foods, Vietnamese religion and Vietnamese people.

Ho Chi Minh City
Ho Chi Minh City, on the southern tip of Vietnam, is one of South East Asia’s emerging boom cities. Still affectionately known by many as Saigon, this is Vietnam’s largest city and its economic engine room.
Ho Chi Minh City has an irrepressible soul and an entrepreneurial energy that hums day and night. Despite almost a century of colonialism and brutal conflict, today this city is renowned for its warm hospitality, which even extends to former foes. A youthful enthusiasm flows through this city, just like the stream of scooters, motorbikes and cars that flow endlessly through its chaotic streets.
In Ho Chi Minh City, it feels as though the future has arrived… and yet the past is never far away. Wide boulevards built during the French colonial era are lined with cutting edge skyscrapers, while jasmine scented temples gently rub shoulders with chic rooftop bars
More than 9 million people call Ho Chi Minh City home and the dynamic energy of its streets is part of its charm. The city is divided into a series of numbered districts and District One is where almost all of the city’s main attractions can be found.
As the sun goes down, find yourself a seat at one of Ho Chi Minh City’s famous rooftop bars, a perfect way to soak up the buzz of the city.
Dynamic, chaotic and energizing. Ho Chi Minh city may have burst onto the world stage as a battle zone but today, there is no better destination to plug in to the pulse of 21st century Asia.

Vietnam had its own share of wars, American and French conquerors and economic difficulties. So it is no wonder that the country appears only nowadays on the map of international tourism. More and more people are interested in the heritage of the 2700 years old country and its natural beauties. Beside the two large cities, Hanoi and Ho Shi Minh city, one can find the remnants of the imperial times and the beautiful pagodas in Hue. The ruins of My Son are similar to the ruins of the temples of Angkor. Beside the tribes living here, the mountains around Sapa are well known of the Silver Waterfall and the rice fields. The most well known sight of the country is the wild Bay of the Descending Dragon. The exotic Mekong delta is famous of the water city of My Tho, the canals, and the swimming market.

Traveling Vietnam: Hanoi to Halong Bay.
Hey guys! Today we're taking you with us to Halong Bay. This is our last stop in Vietnam, before flying back to Bangkok and preparing for the next adventure... India.
This was our first time exploring Halong Bay, I imagine many years ago it was a pristine wonder of the world. The limestone cliffs rising out of the emerald waters are awe-inspiring. Unfortunately the breathtakingly beautiful waterscape has been tainted, with trash... lots of it. Some areas were cleaner than others, the area we kayaked through was especially gorgeous. Ti Top island had a nice viewpoint, however, the beach itself was over crowded, and while there were many people swimming there, we opted to skip the swimming. One of highlights of the trip was exploring the cave.
While it was worth experiencing Halong Bay, it was our first and last time. Thanks for coming on the adventure with us!
xoxo,
Christine

Now that we've settled into our new base in Chiang Mai, Thailand we though it would be a perfect time for us to discuss our most recent experiences traveling in Vietnam; including what was our favorite places/destinations, food, transportation and budget travel tips. As a brief introduction, Vietnam is one of the most under-rated countries in SE Asia for backpackers and/or travelers given what it offers in terms of value. As a country with diverse landscapes, regional uniqueness and mouthwatering cuisine, I'm still surprised more people aren't flocking here.
In terms of our specific journey, we started off in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) and ended up covering the Mekong Delta, Nha Trang, Hoi An, Halong Bay, Hanoi and Sapa. If we had more time we wish we could have explored Hanoi longer (we really just used it as a transportation hub) and visited the likes of Dalat and Mui Ne.
Our top three attractions in Vietnam were cruising along Halong Bay on a boat tour, being culture vultures in Hoi An and trekking and visiting hill-tribes in Sapa.
Ha Long Bay scored high on our list given the extreme beauty of the Karst Limestone cliffs we got to witness up close and personal. Staying overnight on a boat and having the opportunity to interact with other travelers - from all walks of life and different ages - proved to be a top highlight; also, we had the opportunity to try kayaking together for the first time along with visiting a cave and several beaches.
Hoi An is a place we could both potentially see ourselves considering strongly as a base in the not too distant future. It had everything we desired in a city including great food, fascinating architecture, local markets worth exploring and countryside & beaches nearby.
Sapa, was otherworldly. We've never had such stunning views from our hotel room before and when we decided to venture off trekking we were treated to scenery even more spectacular than our hotel room views - which blew our minds in the first place. The problem with narrowing things down to just three places/attractions is that you leave out a lot of things you really enjoyed.
Our preferred method of transportation was taking the train (even though buses were cheaper) given it was the most comfortable journey. If you do take the buses, especially the overnight ones, be prepared for plenty of swerving, honking and random jolts. Even though we were able to sleep through most of the night, it was not restful sleep by any means. A few times, we awoke feeling as though we were going off of a cliff; not terribly pleasant to say the least. If we had to do it over again, we'd have done the entire journey by train.
In terms of accommodations we found that we were able to find excellent value around the $17-20 range and when we splurged at $30 we were getting boutique value. In Malaysia (and even Cambodia to a certain extent), we were scrimping and not willing to pay a bit extra for comfort. In Vietnam, we changed our strategy and - in turn - were rewarded with more comfortable beds, air conditioning and reliable wifi; it was certainly money well spent.
Overall, Vietnam was our favorite country in SE Asia that we explored over the past three months and we HIGHLY recommend it to others whether you're vacationers, travelers, backpackers or digital nomads:

Travel video about destination Mekong Delta Vietnam in Vietnam.
With its small canals and wide creeks, the Mekong Delta in South Vietnam is as multifaceted and contradictory as the country itself. Covering thirty nine thousand square kilometres it is the third largest delta in the world. My Tho is one of the delta’s most charming cities and an area with a long and colourful history. It was the Chinese who first settled in this area in 1697 and who were responsible for the subsequent historical development of My Tho. Most of the smaller islands in the Mekong Delta contain fertile soil thus over the years the delta has developed into an agricultural area Today around twenty two million people live in Nam Bo of which the huge Mekong Delta is at the very heart. In the wider sections of the Mekong, that is also known as The Nine-Headed Dragon Of Cuu Long, ferries operate from bank to bank. Large ferries cross the Song Hau Giang, the most southern creek of the Mekong whose source is in Tibet, some four thousand kilometres distant. Situated at the central junction of seven canals is the floating market of Phung Hiep, an intriguing experience. The colourful antics of the various market traders is particularly Fascinating and it is not surprising that this market is one of the most photographed locations in South Vietnam. In search of hungry customers, tiny floating restaurants make their way between the various busy market traders. The Mekong Delta – colourful, exotic, fascinating – and always a surprise!

When planning your next holiday or backpacking trip to Vietnam consider the following things to do in Sapa in my latest travel video showcasing the top attractions in this travel guide.
There are few places in Southeast Asia (or around the world) that offer as stunning scenery worth exploring as Sapa, Vietnam. Whether you're trekking or hiking around the area consider the following four places to explore:
1) Hike to Lao Chai Village to visit the Black Hmong as part of your Sapa trekking experience.
2) Hike to Ta Van Village to greet the Dzay Tribe on your second day of Sapa hiking.
3) Hike to Giang Ta Chai Village to be welcomed by the Dzao Tribe.
4) While basing yourself in Sapa take a short walk over to Cat Cat Village home of the Black Hmong Tribe.
From marvelous vista to water buffalo from mountains to farm animals from rice terraces to rice fields - one things is certain - your senses will be overloaded.
This is part of our Travel in Vietnam series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Vietnamese culture, Vietnamese arts, Vietnamese foods, Vietnamese religion and Vietnamese people.

Vietnam Tourism, Vietnam Cities, Vietnam Vacation 2014 (HD)
Vietnam is an utter assault on the senses; at once dizzying, frenetic and fascinating. Conical-hatted street vendors sell their wares on the pavements outside gleaming high-rises and exquisite temples are surrounded by streets buzzing with thousands of motorbikes.
Wherever you travel you can't fail to be intrigued by this frenetic, fascinating country. The capital Hanoi is the focus for arts in Vietnam and has been since its foundation in the year 1010 while in Ho Chi Minh City business is king. Hue is steeped in imperial history, Hoi An the place to soak up the atmosphere and the largely undeveloped coastline is the place to kick back.
Life in urban Vietnam is conducted on the streets. In bia hois (pavement pubs) men sup ice-cold beer and odours from makeshift food stalls fill the nostrils: see steaming pho, a noodle soup with various unidentifiable chunks of meat, or grilled chicken feet. Along nearly all the moped-clogged streets produce is sold. Tubs wriggle with live sturgeon, crabs and frogs (still a delicacy from French colonial days), baskets are top heavy with colourful and bizarre fruit, and every possible piece of a pig is on sale.
Rural Vietnam is entirely different. Just a short distance from the cities, water buffalo wallow in green rice paddies and elegant women wearing traditional conical headwear cycle along dusty paths.
Beautiful beaches

The beaches of Vietnam are superb. Nha Trang is the perfect combination of a long sandy beach for relaxing days under the palm trees and a town with restaurants and bars to pass the balmy evenings. Boat trips take you out to nearby islands and divers can explore the nearby coral reefs. Alternatively, try Vung Tau, southeast of Ho Chi Minh City for some superb snorkelling around the many offshore islands or head east of Phan Thiet to the sand dunes of Mui Ne, which stretch for miles. Whatever your budget there'll be a resort to suit you. Relax on the white-sand beaches or have a go at many of the water sports on offer.
Cao Dai Temple
-------------------------
Head out to Tay Ninh to view the colourful midday service of the intriguing Cao Dai sect held in a large temple almost Disney-esque in style. The followers wear red, blue and yellow robes and chant to the accompaniment of a traditional orchestra. En route, scramble through the tunnels at Cu Chi, from where the Viet Cong successfully launched attacks against US forces.
Central Highlands
--------------------------
Dalat is as far as most people go into the Central Highlands but head further into the mountains for stunning views and waterfalls. You are assured of a warm welcome in Buon Ma Thuot, a coffee growing region and home to the Montagnards. The Ho Chi Minh trail is easily reached from Kontum.
Cooking lessons
Learn the subtleties of Vietnamese cookery at a class in ancient Hoi An. Submerge into the hustle and bustle of the market to buy provisions before retreating to the calm of the kitchen. The best part of the day -- you get to eat what you have helped prepare!
Dalat
-----------
To escape the heat of the plains, head for Dalat, a former colonial hill station, reminiscent of a French town, with faded, elegant villas evocative of another era. Colonists from Saigon headed to its cool climes as well as the emperor and his entourage. The romantic lakes and alpine scenery are magnets for Vietnamese honeymooners.
Halong Bay
---------------
Sure it is touristy, and if you take a boat trip you'll be among a flotilla of dozens of old converted junks, but Halong Bay still remains one of the most impressive sights in the world. Take the opportunity to borrow a kayak (all boats should do this) and paddle through the limestone karsts dramatically rising up out of the sea. Or spend the night on one of those junks and explore the caves hidden deep in the islands, pass floating villages and at night enjoy a sundowner on the top deck and look out for shooting stars.
Hanoi
---------
Hanoi is a city of contrasts with the wide, leafy boulevards lined by beautiful colonial buildings in the French quarter, the maze of narrow streets of the Old Quarter and the tranquil lakes. Wherever you are, the background noise is the buzzing of the motorbikes that crowd the streets of the capital.

There's an old Vietnamese saying, "Hanoi has thirty-six streets and guilds -- Jam Street, Sugar Street, Salt Street...". Inside a modern and dynamic city, there appears an antique quarter, the Hanoi's Old Quarter -- the represented eternal soul of the city. These days, most Vietnamese and Westerners are familiar with the phrase "Hà Nội - Ba mươi sáu phố phường" (translated as "Ha Noi - 36 districts" or "Hanoi -- 36 Old Streets"), or "Phố cổ Hà Nội" (translated as "Hanoi's Old Quarter"), the top special historical vestige and sight-seeing of the capital, luring international visitors thanks to their mostly original state.
How old are the streets? It would be a big surprise should you know that Hanoi's Old Quarter came into being at the time King Ly Thai To selected Thang Long as the country's capital in 1010, that is, the streets have a nearly 1,000-year old history and became crowded & lively in 15th century. What makes them unique is that many of them remain in their very ancient architecture of the 15th century. Up to now, it has been the oldest continuously developed area of Vietnam.
What are their names' origins? Due to their long-lasting age, they are called "Old Quarter" or "36 Old Streets" (as consisting of 36 member streets). Similarly to the Guilded age of Europe, "Ha Noi's 36 districts" is Vietnam's version of the guild concept. In the past, as artisans moved to the capital city to do business, they gathered together in this area to share the resources. As a result, many of the streets were named after the crafts sold at that individual street. Pho Hang Bun (Vermicelli), Pho Hang Ma (Paper Product), Pho Hang Bac (Silver), etc. are examples of the streets carrying the name of the products sold there.
The phrase "36 pho phuong" often causes much confusion for most people; "Phố" means a street or a place for merchants to gather to do business, while "Phường", a district or a guild of artisans specializing in a particular trade (phuong cheo, phuong tho, etc.). Yet, in any case, both are right to some extent.
Specialized craft streets and guilds: Most tourists are eager for exploring the old streets well-known for each one's specialized A corner of Hang Gai Street
A corner of Hang Gai Street
industry. Hang Gai Street offers silk clothing ready-made and tailored, embroidery, and silver products. Hang Quat, the street that formerly sold silk and feather fans, now stuns the visitor by its brilliantly colored funeral and festival flags and religious objects and clothing. To Tich Street connects the above two and is still the wood turner's street. Hang Ma glimmers with shiny paper products, such as gift wrappings, wedding decorations and miniature paper objects to burn for the dead. Lan Ong Street is a sensual delight of textures and smells emanating from the sacks of herbal medicinal products: leaves, roots, barks, and powders, etc. Coming here, you may feel as if you were in a classical-styled area in terms of both architecture and product types!
36 old streets or more? Although the old section of Hanoi is often called the "36 Old Streets," there are more than 36 actual streets. Some researchers believe that the number 36 came from the 15th century when there might have been 36 guild locations, which were workshop areas, not streets. When streets were later developed, the guild names were applied to the streets. Others attribute the 36 to a more abstract concept. The number nine in Asia represents the concept of "plenty." Nine times the four directions makes 36, which simply means "many". In fact, there are now more than 70 streets in the area.
Although many of the streets no longer sell the products after which they were named, some still do. Today, the Old Quarter has become the unique classical feature of Hanoi, and the inspiration of numerous writers, poets, and painters, and one of the desired tourist destinations in Hanoi.
To fully explore the Old Quarter in Hanoi, prepare your feet for a day of walking street to street and taking in the locals' daily life, the old-style narrow streets and houses, the colorful souvenir shops, and of course trying some of the most tasty traditional foods of Hanoians. Many agree that joining a Hanoi walking tour or food tour offered by travel agencies will give foreign visitors a full experience of Hanoi Old Quarter, including the daily lifestyle, the history lesson and the feast for their tummies. Those who would like to walk around the area might want to check out this Hanoi Old Quarter walking tour, while those who look to explore the tasty traditional food in the area are recommended to take a look at this.

There are many things to do in Da Lat. Here are some options for you in just one day. Of course you're going to stop for meals too, but I've omitted. Also note the rain showers and how that can affect your day. The first thing you should do is have breakfast at the Da Lat Market on the second level. A wide variety of noodle and rice dishes with drinks are available for order. Then, visit a strawberry farm to buy some gifts for friends. There's no need to visit any flower or plant stores unless you plan to buy some. There's not much to see. I do recommend visiting the mysterious spinning wooden table. It really does spin on its own when you say or think a direction. The crazy house is worth exploring for a few hours, unfortunately it was raining so hard and we didn't want to get the camera wet. The train station is a few minutes away and worth checking out if you like train stations. And lastly check out the Truc Lam Pagoda and ride the cable car. There's also a big lake nearby that might be worth checking out, unfortunately the rain made us lazy and so we just went back to the hotel and relaxed.

----------Description----------
The "National Anthem of the Republic of Vietnam" (Vietnamese: "Tiếng Gọi Công Dân"), originally known as the "March of the Youths" (Vietnamese: "Thanh Niên Hành Khúc"), and before that, "March of the Students" (Vietnamese: Sinh Viên Hành Khúc), was the national anthem of South Vietnam from 1948 to 1975.
After the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, the anthem was discontinued and replaced with "Tiến Quân Ca". However, the song is still used by some Vietnamese expatriates living in the United States, among those in other countries where South Vietnamese refugees consequently resided after the war, as the "Anthem of Free Vietnam".

The flag of Vietnam, or "red flag with a gold star", was designed in 1940 and used during an uprising against French rule in southern Vietnam that year. The background was inspired by the red flag, used by the international communist movement since the Paris Commune of 1871. Red symbolizes revolution and blood. The star represents the five main classes in Vietnamese society—intellectuals, farmers, workers, businessmen and military personnel.
The flag was used by the Viet Minh, a communist-led organization created in 1941 to oppose Japanese occupation. At the end of World War II, Viet Minh leader Ho Chi Minh proclaimed Vietnam independent and signed a decree on September 5, 1945 adopting the flag as the flag of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. The DRV became the government of North Vietnam in 1954 following the Geneva Accords. The flag was modified on November 30, 1955 to make the edges of the star sharper. Until the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, South Vietnam used a yellow flag with three red stripes. The red flag of North Vietnam was adopted as the flag of the new unified Socialist Republic of Vietnam in 1976.

Vietnam (Listeni/ˌviːətˈnaːm/; Vietnamese: Việt Nam [viət˨ næm˧] ( listen)), officially the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (SRV; Vietnamese: Cộng hòa Xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam (About this sound listen)), is the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. With an estimated 90.5 million inhabitants as of 2014, it is the world's 13th-most-populous country, and the eighth-most-populous Asian country. The name Vietnam translates as "Southern Viet" (synonymous with the much older term Nam Viet); it was first officially adopted in 1802 by Emperor Gia Long, and was adopted again in 1945 with the founding of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam under Ho Chi Minh. The country is bordered by China to the north, Laos to the northwest, Cambodia to the southwest, and Malaysia across the South China Sea to the southeast.[e] Its capital city has been Hanoi since the reunification of North and South Vietnam in 1976.
Vietnam was part of Imperial China for over a millennium, from 111 BC to AD 939. The Vietnamese became independent in 939, following the Vietnamese victory in the Battle of Bạch Đằng River. Successive Vietnamese royal dynasties flourished as the nation expanded geographically and politically into Southeast Asia, until the Indochina Peninsula was colonized by the French in the mid-19th century. Following a Japanese occupation in the 1940s, the Vietnamese fought French rule in the First Indochina War, eventually expelling the French in 1954. Thereafter, Vietnam was divided politically into two rival states, North and South Vietnam. Conflict between the two sides intensified, with heavy intervention from the United States, in what is known as the Vietnam War. The war ended with a North Vietnamese victory in 1975.
Vietnam was then unified under a communist government but remained impoverished and politically isolated. In 1986, the government initiated a series of economic and political reforms which began Vietnam's path towards integration into the world economy.[8] By 2000, it had established diplomatic relations with all nations. Since 2000, Vietnam's economic growth rate has been among the highest in the world,[8] and, in 2011, it had the highest Global Growth Generators Index among 11 major economies.[9] Its successful economic reforms resulted in its joining the World Trade Organization in 2007.

Since I was a kid I always saw my Dad leave the house on Anzac day to march with his Vietnamese comrades to commemorate their war efforts, the fallen and what they've achieved since arriving in Australia.
I did go with him once several years ago as a teenager and since then I have always been there and even marched with my Dad's comrades every year.
I decided to film and produce the video of the march on the year of the ANZAC Centenary and the 40th Anniversary of the First refugee Vietnamese settlers post VN war.
It's never been done before (please excuse the shaky footage!)
PLEASE SHARE WITH THIS YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY! Cheers!

During the Second Indochina War, better known as the Vietnam War, a distinctive land warfare strategy and organization was used by the National Liberation Front (better known as the Viet Cong or VC in the West) and the People's Army of Vietnam or NVA (North Vietnamese Army) to defeat their American and South Vietnamese [Government of Vietnam (GOV) and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN)] opponents. These methods involved closely integrated political and military strategy – what was called dau tranh. Dau tranh is examined and compared to the counter-strategies of opponents like the US and ARVN. NLF and PAVN structure and organization are then discussed.

Arriving in Vietnam in August 1965, Pitsenbarger completed more than 250 missions, including one in which he hung from an HH-43's cable to rescue a wounded South Vietnamese soldier from a burning minefield. This action earned him the Airman's Medal and the Republic of Vietnam's Medal of Military Merit and Gallantry Cross with Bronze Palm.
William H. Pitsenbarger was only 21 years old when he was killed in action. But in his short life and valorous Air Force career, he was an example of dedication, compassion and tenacity for all those with whom he served. In his work, and especially on his final mission, Airman 1st Class Pitsenbarger embodied the pararescueman's motto: "That Others May Live."
This story takes viewers to his hometown of Piqua, Ohio.

The First Indochina War (generally known as the Indochina War in France, and as the Anti-French Resistance War in contemporary Vietnam) is said to have begun in French Indochina on 19 December 1946 and to have lasted until 1 August 1954. Fighting between French forces and their Viet Minh opponents in the South dates from September 1945.
The conflict pitted a range of forces, including the French Union's French Far East Expeditionary Corps, led by France and supported by Emperor Bảo Đại's Vietnamese National Army against the Viet Minh, led by Ho Chi Minh and Vo Nguyen Giap. Most of the fighting took place in Tonkin in Northern Vietnam, although the conflict engulfed the entire country and also extended into the neighboring French Indochina protectorates of Laos and Cambodia.
Following the reoccupation of Indochina by the French following the end of World War II, the area having fallen to the Japanese, the Việt Minh launched a rebellion against the French authority governing the colonies of French Indochina. The first few years of the war involved a low-level rural insurgency against French authority. However, after the Chinese communists reached the Northern border of Vietnam in 1949, the conflict turned into a conventional war between two armies equipped with modern weapons supplied by the United States and the Soviet Union.
French Union forces included colonial troops from the whole former empire (Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian, Laotian, Cambodian, and Vietnamese ethnic minorities), French professional troops and units of the French Foreign Legion. The use of metropolitan recruits was forbidden by the governments to prevent the war from becoming even more unpopular at home. It was called the "dirty war" (la sale guerre) by supporters of the Left intellectuals in France (including Jean-Paul Sartre) during the Henri Martin Affair in 1950.
While the strategy of pushing the Việt Minh into attacking a well defended base in a remote part of the country at the end of their logistical trail was validated at the Battle of Na San, the lack of construction materials (especially concrete), tanks (because of lack of road access and difficulty in the jungle terrain), and air cover precluded an effective defense, culminating in a decisive French defeat at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu.
After the war, the Geneva Conference on July 21, 1954, made a provisional division of Vietnam at the 17th parallel, with control of the north given to the Viet Minh as the Democratic Republic of Vietnam under Ho Chi Minh, and the south becoming the State of Vietnam under Emperor Bảo Đại. A year later, Bảo Đại would be deposed by his prime minister, Ngo Dinh Diem, creating the Republic of Vietnam. Soon an insurgency backed by the North developed against Diem's government. The war gradually escalated into the Vietnam War between the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and the Republic of Vietnam backed by heavy US intervention.

He was a key figure in the foundation of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1945, as well as the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) and the Việt Cộng (NLF or VC) during the Vietnam War.
He led the Việt Minh independence movement from 1941 onward, establishing the Communist-ruled Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1945 and defeating the French Union in 1954 at the battle of Điện Biên Phủ. He officially stepped down from power in 1965 due to health problems, but remained a highly visible figurehead and inspiration for those Vietnamese fighting for his cause—a united, communist Vietnam—until his death. After the war, Saigon, the former capital of the Republic of Vietnam, was renamed Hồ Chí Minh City; however, the name Saigon is still very widely used.
In 1911, while working as the cook's helper on a ship, Nguyễn traveled to the United States. From 1912–13, he lived in New York City (Harlem) and Boston, where he worked as a baker at the Parker House Hotel. Among a series of menial jobs, he claimed to have worked for a wealthy family in Brooklyn between 1917–18, and for General Motors as a line manager. It is believed that, while in the United States, he made contact with Korean nationalists, an experience that developed his political outlook.
At various points between 1913 and 1919, Nguyễn lived in West Ealing, and later in Crouch End, Hornsey. He reportedly worked as either a chef or dish washer [reports vary] at the Drayton Court Hotel in West Ealing.[11] It is claimed that Nguyễn trained as a pastry chef under Auguste Escoffier at the Carlton Hotel in the Haymarket, Westminster, but there is no evidence to support this.[10][12] However, the wall of New Zealand House, home of the New Zealand High Commission, which now stands on the site of the Carlton Hotel, displays a blue plaque, stating that Nguyễn worked there in 1913 as a waiter. Nguyễn was also employed as a pastry boy on the Newhaven–Dieppe ferry route in 1913.
From 1919–23, while living in France, Nguyễn began to show an interest in politics, being influenced by his friend and Socialist Party of France comrade Marcel Cachin. Nguyễn claimed to have arrived in Paris from London in 1917, but the French police only had documents recording his arrival in June 1919.[10] He joined a group of Vietnamese nationalists in Paris whose leaders were Phan Chu Trinh and Phan Văn Trường, bearing a new name Nguyễn Ái Quốc ("Nguyễn the Patriot"). Following World War I, the group petitioned for recognition of the civil rights of the Vietnamese people in French Indochina to the Western powers at the Versailles peace talks, but was ignored.[15] Citing the language and the spirit of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, they expected U.S. President Woodrow Wilson to help remove the French colonial rule from Vietnam and ensure the formation of a new, nationalist government. Although they were unable to obtain consideration at Versailles, the failure further radicalized Nguyễn, while also making him a symbol of the anti-colonial movement at home in Vietnam.[16]
In 1920, Nguyễn became a representative to the Congress of Tours of the Socialist Party of France, Quốc voted for the Third International and a founding member of the Parti Communiste Français (FCP). Taking a position in the Colonial Committee of the PCF, he tried to draw his comrades' attention towards people in French colonies including Indochina, but his efforts were often unsuccessful. During this period he began to write journal articles and short stories as well as running his Vietnamese nationalist group. In May 1922, Nguyễn wrote an article for a French magazine criticizing the use of English words by French sportswriters.[17] The article implored Prime Minister Raymond Poincaré to outlaw such Franglais as le manager, le round and le knock-out. While living in Paris, he reportedly had a relationship with a dressmaker named Marie Brière.
In 1923, Nguyễn (Ho) left Paris for Moscow, where he was employed by the Comintern, studied at the Communist University of the Toilers of the East,[18][19] and participated in the Fifth Comintern Congress in June 1924, before arriving in Canton (present-day Guangzhou), China, in November 1924.

The Secret History of the Vietnam Peace Talks: Nixon, Kissinger & Betrayal (2002)

Duck Hook (code-named "Pruning Knife" by the military) was the White House code-name of an operation President Richard Nixon had threatened to unleash against North Vietnam during the Vietnam War, if North Vietnam did not yield to Washington's terms at the Paris peace negotiations. Duck Hook called for the possible-nuclear bombing of military and economic targets in and around Hanoi, the mining of Haiphong and other ports, air strikes against North Vietnam's northeast line of communications as well as passes and bridges at the Chinese border, and air and ground attacks on other targets throughout Vietnam.
Declassified documents have been revealed that show that Duck Hook considered using nuclear weapons.[1] An attachment to a memo from Henry Kissinger to Nixon asked, "Should we be prepared to use nuclear weapons?" The memo warned that "Since we cannot confidently predict the exact point at which Hanoi could be likely to respond positively, we must be prepared to play out whatever string necessary." Kissinger's memo also stated that "To achieve its full effect on Hanoi's thinking, the action must be brutal." [emphasis in original]
A few days earlier, a document from two of Kissinger's aides, Roger Morris and Anthony Lake, stated that the President must be prepared "to decide beforehand, the fateful question of how far we will go. He cannot, for example, confront the issue of using tactical nuclear weapons in the midst of the exercise. He must be prepared to play out whatever string necessary in this case." The identical wording in the Kissinger memo makes clear Kissinger was referring to the nuclear question when he called for playing out "whatever string necessary."
Kissinger recommended against Duck Hook on 17 October. On 1 November 1969, Nixon himself decided to abandon it. This was reportedly because:
there were reservations about Duck Hook's potential effectiveness;
public support for the war continued to decline;
there were signs of political slippage; and
Defense Secretary Melvin Laird and Secretary of State William P. Rogers opposed military escalation.[1]
At the same time that he cancelled Duck Hook, it seems that Nixon embarked on a new strategy to start a "series of increased [nuclear] alert measures designed to convey to the Soviets an increasing readiness by U.S. strategic forces," according to Kissinger aide Col. Alexander Haig.

The Paris Peace Accords of 1973 intended to establish peace in Vietnam and an end to the Vietnam War. It ended direct U.S. military combat, and temporarily stopped the fighting between North and South Vietnam. The governments of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam), the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam), and the United States, as well as the Provisional Revolutionary Government (PRG) that represented indigenous South Vietnamese revolutionaries, signed the Agreement on Ending the War and Restoring Peace in Vietnam on January 27, 1973. The agreement was not ratified by the United States Senate.[1][2]
The negotiations that led to the accord began in 1968 after various lengthy delays. As a result of the accord, the International Control Commission (ICC) was replaced by International Commission of Control and Supervision (ICCS) to fulfill the agreement. The main negotiators of the agreement were United States National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger and Vietnamese politburo member Lê Đức Thọ; the two men were awarded the 1973 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts, although Lê Đức Thọ refused to accept it.

In 1965, General William Westmoreland, commander of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, began utilizing American troops for combat operations in Vietnam rather than solely relying on the forces of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. With National Liberation Front (Viet Cong) and People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) forces operating in the Central Highlands northeast of Saigon, Westmoreland elected to debut the new air mobile 1st Cavalry Division as he believed its helicopters would allow it to overcome the region's rugged terrain.
Following a failed North Vietnamese attack on the Special Forces camp at Plei Me in October, the commander of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Colonel Thomas Brown, was instructed to move from Pleiku to seek and destroy the enemy. Arriving in the area, the 3rd Brigade was unable to find the attackers. Encouraged by Westmoreland to press towards the Cambodian border, Brown soon learned of an enemy concentration near Chu Pong Mountain. Acting on this intelligence, he directed the 1st Battalion/7th Cavalry, led by Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore, to conduct a reconnaissance in force in the area of Chu Pong.

Operation Rolling Thunder was the title of a gradual and sustained US 2nd Air Division (later Seventh Air Force), US Navy, and Republic of Vietnam Air Force (VNAF) aerial bombardment campaign conducted against the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) from 2 March 1965 until 2 November 1968, during the Vietnam War.
The four objectives of the operation (which evolved over time) were to boost the sagging morale of the Saigon regime in the Republic of Vietnam, to persuade North Vietnam to cease its support for the communist insurgency in South Vietnam without actually taking any ground forces into communist North Vietnam, to destroy North Vietnam's transportation system, industrial base, and air defenses, and to halt the flow of men and material into South Vietnam. Attainment of these objectives was made difficult by both the restraints imposed upon the U.S and its allies by Cold War exigencies and by the military aid and assistance received by North Vietnam from its communist allies, the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China (PRC).
