John Foster Dulles (February 25, 1888 -- May 24, 1959) served as U.S. Secretary of State under President Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1953 to 1959. He was a significant figure in the early Cold War era, advocating an aggressive stance against communism throughout the world. He advocated support of the French in their war against the Viet Minh in Indochina and it is widely believed that he refused to shake the hand of Zhou Enlai at the Geneva Conference in 1954. He also played a major role in the Central Intelligence Agency operation to overthrow the democratic Mossadegh government of Iran in 1953 (Operation Ajax) and the democratic Arbenz government of Guatemala in 1954 (Operation PBSUCCESS).
As Secretary of State, Dulles spent considerable time building up NATO and forming other alliances (the "Pactomania") as part of his strategy of controlling Soviet expansion by threatening massive retaliation in event of a war, as well as building up friendships, including that of Louis Jefferson, who would later write a good-humored biography on Dulles. In 1950, he worked alongside Richard Nixon to reduce the French influence in Vietnam as well as asking the United States to attempt to cooperate with the French in the aid of strengthening Diem's Army. Over time he came to the conclusion that is was time to "ease France out of Vietnam" In 1950 He also helped instigate the ANZUS Treaty for mutual protection with Australia and New Zealand. Dulles was strongly against communism, believing it was "Godless terrorism". One of his first major policy shifts towards a more aggressive posture against communism, Dulles directed the CIA at this point now under the directorship of his brother Allen Dulles, in March 1953, to draft plans to overthrow the Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh in Iran. This led directly to the Coup d'état via Operation Ajax in support of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran.
After the war, the United Nations conducted a lengthy inquiry regarding the status of Eritrea, with the superpowers each vying for a stake in the state's future. Britain, the last administrator at the time, put forth the suggestion to partition Eritrea between Sudan and Ethiopia, separating Christians and Muslims. The idea was instantly rejected by Eritrean political parties as well as the UN. The United States point of view was expressed by its then chief foreign policy advisor John Foster Dulles who said:
From the point of view of justice, the opinions of the Eritrean people must receive consideration. Nevertheless, the strategic interests of the United States in the Red Sea Basin and considerations of security and world peace make it necessary that the country [Eritrea] be linked with our ally, Ethiopia.

A UN plebiscite voted 46 to 10 to have Eritrea be federated with Ethiopia which was later stipulated on December 2, 1950 in resolution 390 (V). Eritrea would have its own parliament and administration and would be represented in what had been the Ethiopian parliament and would become the federal parliament. In 1961 the 30-year Eritrean Struggle for Independence began, following the Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I's dissolution of the federation and shutting down of Eritrea's parliament. The Emperor declared Eritrea the fourteenth province of Ethiopia in 1962.
Dulles was also the architect of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) that was created in 1954. The treaty, signed by representatives of Australia, Britain, France, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand and the United States provided for collective action against aggression. In that same year, due to his relationship with his brother Allen Dulles, the Director of CIA and a former member of the Board Of Directors of the United Fruit Company, based in Guatemala, Foster Dulles was pivotal in promoting and executing the CIA-led Operation PBSUCCESS that overthrew the democratically elected Guatemalan government of Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán.
Dulles was one of the pioneers of massive retaliation and brinkmanship. In an article written for Life Magazine Dulles defined his policy of brinkmanship: "The ability to get to the verge without getting into the war is the necessary art." His critics blamed him for damaging relations with Communist states and contributing to the Cold War.

In 1956, Carol Burnett was struggling to make it into show business - specifically, the legitimate theater in New York. She was already being recognized as a unique, talented comedienne, and had small TV parts on The Paul Winchell Show, and played funny Celia, girlfriend to Buddy Hackett's character "Stanley" (an early TV sitcom). While certainly not yet a "household name", she was to receive one of her best national exposure opportunities when she appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" on January 6, 1957 - the segment that also featured a new, exciting rock and roll singer by the name of Elvis Presley.
On the show, Carol performed what was known as her "singers routine" where she humorously mimiced different types of girl singers and their different styles. Indeed, Carol knew the value and importance of having special material to perform that would showcase her own unique comedic talents.
Carol had another lucky break in June of that year when she was booked into The Blue Angel nightclub for a 3 week engagement. Her friend, Ken Welch (who remained her friend and important special material writer for many years - even to the days of her own CBS TV show) had previously fashioned a bit for Carol where she played a dowdy housewife madly in love with an unnamed show business idol - it was always a crowd-pleaser. To prepare for The Blue Angel engagement - and with the country in the grips of "Presley-mania" - Ken thought it would be fun to take the old routine one step further, and have her go bonkers over someone famous. But - not the obvious (like Elvis) - but to make it truly funny, they decided that Carol's infatuation would be over the serious, dour-faced current Secretary of State under Eisenhower - a man by the name of John Foster Dulles (for whom Dulles Airport was later named). When Carol debuted the song at The Blue Angel, it went over like wildfire - and she got a standing ovation. Immediately, word of mouth all over the East Side of Manhattan was talking about this nutty comedienne who was singing this hilarious song about Mr. Dulles - and The Blue Angel was packed every night.
Jack Paar's staff on "The Tonight Show" also heard about Carol's funny song, and invited her to sing it on the show. On Tuesday night, August 6, 1957, Carol and Ken hopped a cab after her first show at The Blue Angel, and headed to the Paar show. When Carol did the routine that night - opening her mouth wide - mugging - crossing her eyes - and moving her face as if it were made of Silly Putty - the crowd went into an uproar of hysterics, cheers and applause! When Carol got back to The Blue Angel for her second show, the phones were ringing off the hook - AP, UPI, Life, Time - even Mr. Dulles' advisor, John Waters called from Washington to tell Carol how much he enjoyed the performance. And since Mr. Dulles had just returned from a NATO conference, it was arranged for Carol to return to the Jack Paar Show that Thursday evening to sing the song once again - so John Foster Dulles could see it himself. When Dulles appeared on "Meet The Press" that Sunday, he was asked to comment about this young comic and her "crush" on him - and the ordinarily pompous diplomat quipped "I make it a policy never to discuss affairs of the heart in public."
Ed Sullivan - not to be outdone by Jack Paar - brought Carol back to his CBS show to do the routine - and introduced Carol with "Here is the girl who has become the TV sensation of the year - here is young Carol Burnett". The "Dulles" number became a national sensation - and in August, Carol made her very first recording on ABC-Paramount with the now famous song (note that "Burnette" is spelled with an "e" on the label). Carol is such a kind person, that it should be noted that she stopped singing this song when John Foster Dulles was diagnosed with cancer out of consideration and respect for him (he passed away in 1959).

U.S. INVOLVEMENT IN DIEN BIEN PHU DECLASSIFIED IN 2004 (50 years later):
"By early April 1954, the garrison had to rely entirely on air supply. Although President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff had considered—and then rejected—American military intervention in Indochina, they did agree to employ aircraft belonging to CAT to airdrop vital supplies. The CAT flights, known as Operation Squaw I and Operation Squaw II, involved a dozen Fairchild C-119 cargo aircraft repainted in French Air Force colors. During the siege, 37 CAT pilots flew 682 missions out of the airbase at Cat Bi near Haiphong between March 13 and May 6, 1954. On February 24, 2005, French Ambassador Jean-David Levitte posthumously awarded the Legion of Honor to McGovern, Buford, and surviving CAT pilots on behalf of France for their actions at Dien Bien Phu."

A few hours ago, Dien Bien Phu has fallen.
Its defense of fifty-seven days and nights will go down in history as one of the most heroic of all time. The defenders composed of French and native forces, inflicted staggering losses on the enemy. And the French soldiers showed that they have not lost either the will or the skill to fight even under the most terrible conditions. And it showed that Vietnam can produce soldiers who have the qualities needed to enable them to defend their country.
The epic battle has ended, but great causes have before now been won out of lost battles. The Chinese communists have been supplying the forces of the Vietminh rebels with munitions and trucks and anti-aircraft guns, radar, technical equipment and technical advisers. They have, however, stopped short of open armed intervention. And in this respect, they may have been deterred by the warnings which the United States has given that such open intervention would lead to grave consequences which might not be confined to Indo-China.
Accordingly we are ready to take part with the other countries principally concerned in an examination of the possibility of establishing a collective defense within the framework of the Charter of the United Nations to seek the peace, security and freedom of Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. And I feel that unity of purpose still persists. And that such a tragic event as the fall of Dien Bien Phu will harden, and not weaken our purpose to stay united. Today the United States and the other countries immediately concerned are giving careful consideration to the establishment of a collective defense. Conversations are taking place amongst these. There are many problems we must agree on just who will take part in the united defense effort and just what the different commitments will be. And also I frankly recognize that difficulties have been encountered, but also I say that this was to be expected. Because the complexity of the problem is great. So great indeed that, as I pointed out, it was only possible in the last few months, even to get started on this project. And under all the circumstances, I feel that very good progress is being made. I feel confident that the outcome will be such that communist aggression will not be able to gain in Southeast Asia the results that it seeks. This common defense may involve serious commitments by us all but free people will never remain free if they are not willing it need be to fight for their vital interests. Furthermore, vital interests can no longer be protected barely by local defense. The key to successful defense and the key to detering attack is association with others for mutual defence. And that is what United States seeks in Southeast Asia."

Born in Washington, D.C., he was one of five children and the eldest son born to Presbyterian minister Allen Macy Dulles and his wife Edith (Foster). His paternal grandfather, John Welsh Dulles, had been a Presbyterian missionary in India. He attended public schools in Watertown, New York. After graduating from Princeton University (Phi Beta Kappa, 1908), where he competed on the American Whig-Cliosophic Society debate team, and graduating from The George Washington University Law School, he joined the New York City law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell, where he specialized in international law. He tried to join the United States Army during World War I but was rejected because of poor eyesight. Instead, Dulles received an Army commission as Major on the War Industries Board.

Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz (Spanish: [fiˈðel ˈkastro]; born August 13, 1926) is a Cuban revolutionary and politician, having held the position of Prime Minister of Cuba from 1959 to 1976, and then President from 1976 to 2008. He also served as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba from the party's foundation in 1961 until 2011. Politically a Marxist-Leninist, under his administration the Republic of Cuba was converted into a one-party socialist state, with industry and business being nationalized under state ownership and socialist reforms implemented in all areas of society. On the international stage, he also served as the Secretary-General of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1979 to 1983 and 2006 to 2008.

In 1956, Carol Burnett was struggling to make it into show business - specifically, the legitimate theater in New York. She was already being recognized as a unique, talented comedienne, and had small TV parts on The Paul Winchell Show, and played funny Celia, girlfriend to Buddy Hackett's character "Stanley" (an early TV sitcom). While certainly not yet a "household name", she was to receive one of her best national exposure opportunities when she appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" on January 6, 1957 - the segment that also featured a new, exciting rock and roll singer by the name of Elvis Presley. On the show, Carol performed what was known as her "singers routine" where she humorously mimiced different types of girl singers and their different styles. Indeed, Carol knew the value and importance of having special material to perform that would showcase her own unique comedic talents. Carol had another lucky break in June of that year when she was booked into The Blue Angel nightclub for a 3 week engagement. Her friend, Ken Welch (who remained her friend and important special material writer for many years - even to the days of her own CBS TV show) had previously fashioned a bit for Carol where she played a dowdy housewife madly in love with an unnamed show business idol - it was always a crowd-pleaser. To prepare for The Blue Angel engagement - and with the country in the grips of "Presley-mania" - Ken thought it would be fun to take the old routine one step further, and have her go bonkers over someone famous. But - not the obvious (like Elvis) - but to make it truly funny, they decided that Carol's infatuation would be over the serious, dour-faced current Secretary of State under Eisenhower - a man by the name of John Foster Dulles (for whom Dulles Airport was later named). When Carol debuted the song at The Blue Angel, it went over like wildfire - and she got a standing ovation. Immediately, word of mouth all over the East Side of Manhattan was talking about this nutty comedienne who was singing this hilarious song about Mr. Dulles - and The Blue Angel was packed every night. Jack Paar's staff on "The Tonight Show" also heard about Carol's funny song, and invited her to sing it on the show. On Tuesday night, August 6, 1957, Carol and Ken hopped a cab after her first show at The Blue Angel, and headed to the Paar show. When Carol did the routine that night - opening her mouth wide - mugging - crossing her eyes - and moving her face as if it were made of Silly Putty - the crowd went into an uproar of hysterics, cheers and applause! When Carol got back to The Blue Angel for her second show, the phones were ringing off the hook - AP, UPI, Life, Time - even Mr. Dulles' advisor, John Waters called from Washington to tell Carol how much he enjoyed the performance. And since Mr. Dulles had just returned from a NATO conference, it was arranged for Carol to return to the Jack Paar Show that Thursday evening to sing the song once again - so John Foster Dulles could see it himself. When Dulles appeared on "Meet The Press" that Sunday, he was asked to comment about this young comic and her "crush" on him - and the ordinarily pompous diplomat quipped "I make it a policy never to discuss affairs of the heart in public." Ed Sullivan - not to be outdone by Jack Paar - brought Carol back to his CBS show to do the routine - and introduced Carol with "Here is the girl who has become the TV sensation of the year - here is young Carol Burnett". The "Dulles" number became a national sensation - and in August, Carol made her very first recording on ABC-Paramount with the now famous song (note that "Burnette" is spelled with an "e" on the label). Carol is such a kind person, that it should be noted that she stopped singing this song when John Foster Dulles was diagnosed with cancer out of consideration and respect for him (he passed away in 1959). I hope you enjoy this seldom heard recording that was one of the true springboards to fame for the superbly talented, unique national treasure known as Carol Burnett. Although President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff had considered—and then rejected—American military intervention in Indochina, they did agree to employ aircraft belonging to CAT to airdrop vital supplies. The CAT flights, known as Operation Squaw I and Operation Squaw II, involved a dozen Fairchild C-119 cargo aircraft repainted in French Air Force colors. During the siege, 37 CAT pilots flew 682 missions out of the airbase at Cat Bi near Haiphong between March 13 and May 6, 1954. On February 24, 2005, French Ambassador Jean-David Levitte posthumously awarded the Legion of Honor to McGovern, Buford, and surviving CAT pilots on behalf of France for their actions at Dien Bien Phu." Its defense of fifty-seven days and nights will go down in history as one of the most heroic of all time. The defenders composed of French and native forces, inflicted staggering losses on the enemy. And the French soldiers showed that they have not lost either the will or the skill to fight even under the most terrible conditions. And it showed that Vietnam can produce soldiers who have the qualities needed to enable them to defend their country. The epic battle has ended, but great causes have before now been won out of lost battles. The Chinese communists have been supplying the forces of the Vietminh rebels with munitions and trucks and anti-aircraft guns, radar, technical equipment and technical advisers. They have, however, stopped short of open armed intervention. And in this respect, they may have been deterred by the warnings which the United States has given that such open intervention would lead to grave consequences which might not be confined to Indo-China. Accordingly we are ready to take part with the other countries principally concerned in an examination of the possibility of establishing a collective defense within the framework of the Charter of the United Nations to seek the peace, security and freedom of Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. And I feel that unity of purpose still persists. And that such a tragic event as the fall of Dien Bien Phu will harden, and not weaken our purpose to stay united. Today the United States and the other countries immediately concerned are giving careful consideration to the establishment of a collective defense. Conversations are taking place amongst these. There are many problems we must agree on just who will take part in the united defense effort and just what the different commitments will be. And also I frankly recognize that difficulties have been encountered, but also I say that this was to be expected. Because the complexity of the problem is great. So great indeed that, as I pointed out, it was only possible in the last few months, even to get started on this project. And under all the circumstances, I feel that very good progress is being made. I feel confident that the outcome will be such that communist aggression will not be able to gain in Southeast Asia the results that it seeks. This common defense may involve serious commitments by us all but free people will never remain free if they are not willing it need be to fight for their vital interests. Furthermore, vital interests can no longer be protected barely by local defense. The key to successful defense and the key to detering attack is association with others for mutual defence. And that is what United States seeks in Southeast Asia." -

As Secretary of State, Dulles spent considerable time building up NATO and forming other alliances (the "Pactomania") as part of his strategy of controlling Soviet expansion by threatening massive retaliation in event of a war, as well as building up friendships, including that of Louis Jefferson, who would later write a good-humored biography on Dulles. This led directly to the Coup d'état via Operation Ajax in support of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran.
After the war, the United Nations conducted a lengthy inquiry regarding the status of Eritrea, with the superpowers each vying for a stake in the state's future. Britain, the last administrator at the time, put forth the suggestion to partition Eritrea between Sudan and Ethiopia, separating Christians and Muslims. The idea was instantly rejected by Eritrean political parties as well as the UN. The United States point of view was expressed by its then chief foreign policy advisor John Foster Dulles who said:
From the point of view of justice, the opinions of the Eritrean people must receive consideration. John Foster Dulles (February 25, 1888 -- May 24, 1959) served as U.S. Secretary of State under President Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1953 to 1959. He was a significant figure in the early Cold War era, advocating an aggressive stance against communism throughout the world. He advocated support of the French in their war against the Viet Minh in Indochina and it is widely believed that he refused to shake the hand of Zhou Enlai at the Geneva Conference in 1954. He also played a major role in the Central Intelligence Agency operation to overthrow the democratic Mossadegh government of Iran in 1953 (Operation Ajax) and the democratic Arbenz government of Guatemala in 1954 (Operation PBSUCCESS).

In 1956, Carol Burnett was struggling to make it into show business - specifically, the legitimate theater in New York. She was already being recognized as a unique, talented comedienne, and had small TV parts on The Paul Winchell Show, and played funny Celia, girlfriend to Buddy Hackett's character "Stanley" (an early TV sitcom). While certainly not yet a "household name", she was to receive one of her best national exposure opportunities when she appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" on January 6, 1957 - the segment that also featured a new, exciting rock and roll singer by the name of Elvis Presley.
On the show, Carol performed what was known as her "singers routine" where she humorously mimiced different types of girl singers and their different styles. Indeed, Carol knew the value and importance of having special material to perform that would showcase her own unique comedic talents.
Carol had another lucky break in June of that year when she was booked into The Blue Angel nightclub for a 3 week engagement. Her friend, Ken Welch (who remained her friend and important special material writer for many years - even to the days of her own CBS TV show) had previously fashioned a bit for Carol where she played a dowdy housewife madly in love with an unnamed show business idol - it was always a crowd-pleaser. To prepare for The Blue Angel engagement - and with the country in the grips of "Presley-mania" - Ken thought it would be fun to take the old routine one step further, and have her go bonkers over someone famous. But - not the obvious (like Elvis) - but to make it truly funny, they decided that Carol's infatuation would be over the serious, dour-faced current Secretary of State under Eisenhower - a man by the name of John Foster Dulles (for whom Dulles Airport was later named). When Carol debuted the song at The Blue Angel, it went over like wildfire - and she got a standing ovation. Immediately, word of mouth all over the East Side of Manhattan was talking about this nutty comedienne who was singing this hilarious song about Mr. Dulles - and The Blue Angel was packed every night.
Jack Paar's staff on "The Tonight Show" also heard about Carol's funny song, and invited her to sing it on the show. On Tuesday night, August 6, 1957, Carol and Ken hopped a cab after her first show at The Blue Angel, and headed to the Paar show. When Carol did the routine that night - opening her mouth wide - mugging - crossing her eyes - and moving her face as if it were made of Silly Putty - the crowd went into an uproar of hysterics, cheers and applause! When Carol got back to The Blue Angel for her second show, the phones were ringing off the hook - AP, UPI, Life, Time - even Mr. Dulles' advisor, John Waters called from Washington to tell Carol how much he enjoyed the performance. And since Mr. Dulles had just returned from a NATO conference, it was arranged for Carol to return to the Jack Paar Show that Thursday evening to sing the song once again - so John Foster Dulles could see it himself. When Dulles appeared on "Meet The Press" that Sunday, he was asked to comment about this young comic and her "crush" on him - and the ordinarily pompous diplomat quipped "I make it a policy never to discuss affairs of the heart in public."
Ed Sullivan - not to be outdone by Jack Paar - brought Carol back to his CBS show to do the routine - and introduced Carol with "Here is the girl who has become the TV sensation of the year - here is young Carol Burnett". The "Dulles" number became a national sensation - and in August, Carol made her very first recording on ABC-Paramount with the now famous song (note that "Burnette" is spelled with an "e" on the label). Carol is such a kind person, that it should be noted that she stopped singing this song when John Foster Dulles was diagnosed with cancer out of consideration and respect for him (he passed away in 1959).

U.S. INVOLVEMENT IN DIEN BIEN PHU DECLASSIFIED IN 2004 (50 years later):
"By early April 1954, the garrison had to rely entirely on air supply. Although President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff had considered—and then rejected—American military intervention in Indochina, they did agree to employ aircraft belonging to CAT to airdrop vital supplies. The CAT flights, known as Operation Squaw I and Operation Squaw II, involved a dozen Fairchild C-119 cargo aircraft repainted in French Air Force colors. During the siege, 37 CAT pilots flew 682 missions out of the airbase at Cat Bi near Haiphong between March 13 and May 6, 1954. On February 24, 2005, French Ambassador Jean-David Levitte posthumously awarded the Legion of Honor to McGovern, Buford, and surviving CAT pilots on behalf of France for their actions at Dien Bien Phu."

A few hours ago, Dien Bien Phu has fallen.
Its defense of fifty-seven days and nights will go down in history as one of the most heroic of all time. The defenders composed of French and native forces, inflicted staggering losses on the enemy. And the French soldiers showed that they have not lost either the will or the skill to fight even under the most terrible conditions. And it showed that Vietnam can produce soldiers who have the qualities needed to enable them to defend their country.
The epic battle has ended, but great causes have before now been won out of lost battles. The Chinese communists have been supplying the forces of the Vietminh rebels with munitions and trucks and anti-aircraft guns, radar, technical equipment and technical advisers. They have, however, stopped short of open armed intervention. And in this respect, they may have been deterred by the warnings which the United States has given that such open intervention would lead to grave consequences which might not be confined to Indo-China.
Accordingly we are ready to take part with the other countries principally concerned in an examination of the possibility of establishing a collective defense within the framework of the Charter of the United Nations to seek the peace, security and freedom of Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. And I feel that unity of purpose still persists. And that such a tragic event as the fall of Dien Bien Phu will harden, and not weaken our purpose to stay united. Today the United States and the other countries immediately concerned are giving careful consideration to the establishment of a collective defense. Conversations are taking place amongst these. There are many problems we must agree on just who will take part in the united defense effort and just what the different commitments will be. And also I frankly recognize that difficulties have been encountered, but also I say that this was to be expected. Because the complexity of the problem is great. So great indeed that, as I pointed out, it was only possible in the last few months, even to get started on this project. And under all the circumstances, I feel that very good progress is being made. I feel confident that the outcome will be such that communist aggression will not be able to gain in Southeast Asia the results that it seeks. This common defense may involve serious commitments by us all but free people will never remain free if they are not willing it need be to fight for their vital interests. Furthermore, vital interests can no longer be protected barely by local defense. The key to successful defense and the key to detering attack is association with others for mutual defence. And that is what United States seeks in Southeast Asia."

But even there (as when Mr Macmillan went to see him with the President), he still remained in close touch with world affairs. Now, at the age of 71, he had died.

Herbert Henry Lehman (March 28, 1878 -- December 5, 1963) was a Democratic Party politician from New York. He was the 45th Governor of New York from 1933 to 1942, and represented New York in the United States Senate from 1950 to 1957.
Lehman, born in New York City in 1878, was the son of German-Jewish immigrant Mayer Lehman, one of the three founders of the Lehman Brothers investment banking firm. Herbert Lehman attended what is now The Dwight School. A graduate of Williams College (Class of 1899), he became a partner of Lehman Brothers with his brother Arthur and cousin Philip in 1908.
Lehman married Edith Louise Altschul in 1910. Herbert Lehman became a colonel in the U.S. Army during World War I.
The couple had three children, Hilda, Peter, and John. All three served in the United States Military during World War II; Peter was killed while on active duty. According to a group history that was published April 6, 1944, the Governor's son was to be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. The medal was set to be awarded to Peter on his father's 70th birthday.
Lehman became active in politics in 1920, and became Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Democratic Party in 1928, as a reward for being a strong supporter of Alfred E. Smith. He was elected Lieutenant Governor of New York in 1928 and 1930, and resigned from Lehman Brothers upon taking office. He then served four terms as Governor of New York from 1933 and 1942, elected in 1932, 1934, 1936 and 1938. Unlike Smith, Lehman was a supporter of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's "New Deal" policies and implemented a program in the same spirit in New York.
On December 3, 1942, he resigned the governorship less than a month before the end of his term to accept an appointment as Director of Foreign Relief and Rehabilitation Operations for the United States Department of State. He served as Director-General of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration from 1943 to 1946.
Herbert Lehman was the Democratic Nominee for U.S. Senator from New York in 1946 and also ran on the Liberal and American Labor tickets, but was defeated by the Republican candidate Irving Ives. In 1949, he ran again, this time in a special election to serve the remainder of Robert F. Wagner's term. Lehman defeated John Foster Dulles, who had been appointed to fill the vacancy temporarily after Wagner's resignation, and took his seat on January 3, 1950. In this campaign he ran on the Democratic and Liberal tickets, with the American Labor Party urging their members not to vote for any candidate. In 1950, he was re-elected to a full term running on the Democratic and Liberal lines and opposed by the American Labor Party.
Lehman was one of two senators who were opposed to nominating Mississippi Senator James O. Eastland to be Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. (The other was Wayne L. Morse of Oregon.) He was also an early and vocal opponent of Senator Joseph McCarthy (R-Wis.). Lehman was one of the most liberal Senators and not considered part of the Senate "club" of insiders. He retired from the Senate after his full term, and was not a candidate for renomination or reelection in 1956.
