America’s Navy has a long, proud tradition that stretches back more than 230 years to the days of the Revolutionary War.
This is Five Things You Don’t Know About the US Navy.
Fact One: While everyone knows Neil Armstrong’s role in the 1969 moon landing, his service to our nation actually began with a stint in the US Navy.
In August 1947, Armstrong enlisted in the US Naval Reserve. He reported for active duty in February 1949.
He then went on to fly 78 missions as a naval aviator during the Korean War – many of which were as an armed reconnaissance pilot. In fact, on September 3rd, 1952, while flying a Grumman F9F Panther, Armstrong was hit by anti-aircraft fire. Although he was able to fly the plane back to friendly territory, it was so severely damaged that he was forced to eject.
After completing his tour of duty in Korea, Armstrong opted to stay in the US Naval Reserves for another 8 years, finally resigning in 1960.
So, the first man to set foot on the moon was actually a US Navy veteran.
Fact Two: Although the “Silent Service” represented less than 2% of all naval personnel during World War II, they accounted for the highest casualty percentage of all armed forces.
Throughout the course of the war, 52 US Navy submarines were lost, taking with them more than 3,500 officers and enlisted men. Those losses average out to approximately 22% of all submariners being killed in action.
Fact Three: Today the 21-gun Salute is fired in honor of the President, ex-President and President-elect of the United States, as well as to honor a national flag or the chief of state or sovereign of a foreign nation.
The tradition of the salute, however, actually dates back to the time of wooden warships. When approaching a port, the ship would fire all of its cannons out to sea as a means of showing it was disarmed and therefore not a threat.
Fact Four: While the US Navy recognizes its birthday as October 13th, 1775, it does not take an official stance on its birthplace. As a matter of fact, no less than six American towns and cities actually lay claim to the title.
Included on the list is Machias, Maine, who claims the distinction because that’s where a small sloop armed with American woodsmen seized a Royal Navy schooner on June the 12th 1775.
Beverly, Massachusetts and Marblehead, Massachusetts, have a competing claim that centers around the fact that in September 1775 General George Washington ordered the schooner Hannah fitted out as the first armed sea vessel of the American Revolution. Because the Hannah was outfitted in Beverly, but the captain and crew hailed from Marblehead, both towns claim to be the ship’s homeport, and therefore the Navy’s birthplace.
In addition to these three, Providence, Rhode Island also claims the title because their residents were the first to propose a resolution to build and equip an American fleet in October 1775.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, claims to be the birthplace because that’s where the Continental Congress met on October 13th, when it voted to establish the Continental Navy and resolved to build two armed vessels.
And finally, Whitehall, New York, claims the distinction because that’s where the first ships were actually built in the summer of 1776.
Fact Five: The current US Navy leads the world in terms of size, strength and global reach. However, in comparison to its peak strength during World War II, today’s Navy is downright tiny.
Remarkably, between 1941 and 1945 alone, the US Navy added nearly 6,000 ships to its total strength. This included an impressive 27 aircraft carriers, 77 escort carriers and more than 360 destroyers.
Including the battleships, cruisers, destroyer escorts, transports and countless other vessels, this amounted to a peak strength of more than 6,700 operational ships during the war.

This is Five Things You Don’t Know About US Aircraft Carriers.
Fact One: While underway, Nimitz-class carriers are capable of carrying up to approximately 90 combat aircraft. While that may not seem like that many, considering the US military’s total number of aircraft is just under 14,000, it is astronomical in comparison to the majority of the world’s nations.
In fact, more than half the countries in the world have less than 90 aircraft in their entire air force. So, just one Nimitz-class carrier has more air power than the majority of nations have in their whole arsenal.
Fact Two: While many of us can easily picture the aircraft carriers of World War II engaging in epic battles in the Pacific, it’s amazing to think that two – the USS Sable and the USS Wolverine – were actually stationed on the Great Lakes as training ships.
Originally built as commercial paddle steamers, both the Sable and the Wolverine were purchased by the US Navy in 1942 and converted into carriers. Home ported at Navy Pier in Chicago, they were part of what was called the “Cornbelt Fleet” of training vessels.
While they weren’t technically warships because they lacked a hangar deck, elevators and armament, they were extremely valuable in helping pilots practice takeoffs and landings in realistic conditions.
As a matter of fact, the two ships together trained more than 17,800 pilots. And one of the flyers to qualify on the Sable was none other than future president George H. W. Bush.
Fact Three: Known as “TR” or the “Big Stick” by most folks in the Navy, the USS Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71 is the fourth Nimitz-class aircraft carrier.
Her keel was laid down on October 31st 1981, at Newport News, Virginia. But unlike all carriers before her, the Theodore Roosevelt was the first aircraft carrier to be assembled through modular construction – which essentially worked by pre-building large sections, hoisting them into place using a huge gantry crane, and then welding them together.
This process shaved an amazing 16 months off the Theodore Roosevelt’s construction timeline, and proved so effective that every aircraft carrier since her has been built using the same method.
Fact Four: During World War II, the United State Navy lost a total of twelve carriers to enemy action. Of these losses, five had names that would fight on as new carriers later in the war.
These ships include our nations first carrier, the USS Langley CV-1, which was crippled by Japanese dive-bombers off the coast of Java in 1942. A second Langley, CVL-27, was commissioned in 1943 and took part in attacks on the Marshall Islands and Okinawa.
During the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942, the USS Lexington CV-2 was sunk by a Japanese torpedo. It later came back as CV-16, which was commissioned in February 1943 and saw extensive action during the Battle of the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf.
In June 1942, the USS Yorktown CV-5 was sunk at the Battle of Midway. That ship’s name lived on as the USS Yorktown CV-10, which was commissioned in the spring of 1943 and helped launch raids on islands such as Tarawa.
The USS Wasp CV-7 was sunk shortly after the Battle of Guadalcanal in the summer of 1942. Its namesake, CV-18, was commissioned in November 1943 and participated in the attack on Okinawa.
And finally, the USS Hornet CV-8 was fatally wounded during the Battle of Santa Cruz in October 1942. The Hornet was later resurrected as CV-12, commissioned in November 1943. That ship participated in raids on Tinian, Saipan, Guam and Iwo Jima.
Fact Five: For more than forty years, the United States has operated the largest aircraft carriers in the world.
Our Nimitz-class supercarriers – the first of which was commissioned in early 1975 – have an overall length of 1,092 feet and a full load displacement of approximately 97,000 tons. They tower an impressive 20 stories above the water, and have a flight deck that’s 4.5 acres big.
But as massive as these warships are, our newest supercarriers – the Gerald R. Ford class – are even slightly larger. While these mega-ships have the same overall length of 1,092 feet, their full load displacement is about 100,000 tons – or about 3,000 tons more than the Nimitz-class.

In honor of the Pearl Harbor anniversary, we look at some interesting facts related to the “date which will live in infamy”. Hosted by Benari Poulten, a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserve and veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
December 7th, 1941 – “a date which will live in infamy”.
This is Five Things You Don’t Know About Pearl Harbor.
Fact One: The December 7th, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor spurred direct US involvement in World War II. But while you may think that the decision to enter the war was unanimously approved, it actually wasn’t.
In fact, when Congress voted to declare war on Japan the day after the attack, Jeannette Rankin of Montana was the sole dissenting voice.
A lifelong pacifist who had also voted against America’s involvement in World War I, Rankin’s decision was met with hisses in the gallery and pleas from her colleagues to change her vote, or, at the very least, abstain from casting it.
When she refused to do so, Rankin outraged so many people that she effectively ended her political career… And thanks to her single dissenting voice, the Declaration of War against Japan passed with a final tally of 388 to 1.
Fact Two: While we’re all familiar with the air attack that took place at Pearl Harbor, a lesser known part of the story is the fact that the Japanese also deployed several midget submarines for assaults against the island.
One of these subs – commanded by Kazuo Sakamaki – became disabled and stuck on a beach in Oahu. Although Sakamaki attempted to blow his submarine up, the explosives failed to go off – and he was ultimately captured as America’s first prisoner of war in World War II.
After the attack ended, Sakamaki’s submarine was recovered intact, and was taken on tour across the United States, where it was used to help raise money through the purchase of war bonds.
Fact Three: While US military forces worked to rebuild Pearl Harbor in the weeks following December 7th, the Japanese initiated a plan to attack the island for a second time.
Codenamed “Operation K” this second assault took place on March 4, 1942, when two Japanese “flying boat” aircraft flew across the Pacific, refueled via submarine in the northwest Hawaiian islands, and arrived over Oahu in the middle of the night.
Although their intention was to bomb the base at Pearl Harbor, blackout conditions and heavy cloud cover caused the pilots to become disoriented – and forced them to mistakenly drop their payload far off target.
The resulting blast damaged a few homes and buildings, but, thankfully, resulted in zero casualties.
Fact Four: Although the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor resulted in massive devastation and an immense loss of American lives, there were a few US ships that managed to escape unscathed.
Among them, was the USS Phoenix CL-46. A Brooklyn-class light cruiser, the Phoenix was anchored southeast of Ford Island on the morning of the assault. Since it was not considered a primary target, it was largely passed over by the Japanese.
Throughout the remainder of World War II, the Phoenix escorted convoys, and helped support troop landings throughout the Pacific Theater.
In 1951, six years after the war ended, the Phoenix was sold to the Argentine Navy, where it was ultimately renamed the ARA General Belgrano.
There, the ship continued to serve for another 31 years – until, in 1982, it was sunk by a British submarine during the Falklands War.
Fact Five: Attracting more than 1 million visitors each year, the USS Arizona Memorial is perhaps the best known World War II monument in the world.
Officially dedicated on May 30th, 1962, the $500,000 structure was funded through donations from both the public and private sector. These donations were solicited through the help of several organizations and individuals – including none other than the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley.
Elvis, who had recently finished a two-year stint in the Army, performed a benefit concert at Pearl Harbor in March of 1961. Singing favorites like “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Don’t Be Cruel”, the concert raised nearly $65,000 – and was the last time Elvis performed on stage until his return to Las Vegas almost 8 years later.
While the assault on Hawaii became famous throughout the world, the Japanese military actually attacked several other locations on December 7th.

Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor is a lagoon harbor on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, west of Honolulu. Much of the harbor and surrounding lands is a United States Navy deep-water naval base. It is also the headquarters of the United States Pacific Fleet. The U.S. government first obtained exclusive use of the inlet and the right to maintain a repair and coaling station for ships here in 1887. The attack on Pearl Harbor by the Empire of Japan on December 7, 1941 was the immediate cause of the United States' entry into World War II.
History
Pearl Harbor was originally an extensive shallow embayment called Wai Momi (meaning, “Waters of Pearl”) or Puʻuloa (meaning, “long hill”) by the Hawaiians. Puʻuloa was regarded as the home of the shark goddess, Kaʻahupahau, and her brother (or son), Kahiʻuka, in Hawaiian legends. According to tradition, Keaunui, the head of the powerful Ewa chiefs, is credited with cutting a navigable channel near the present Puʻuloa saltworks, by which he made the estuary, known as "Pearl River," accessible to navigation. Making due allowance for legendary amplification, the estuary already had an outlet for its waters where the present gap is; but Keaunui is typically given the credit for widening and deepening it.

United States Navy
The United States Navy (USN) is the naval warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. The U.S. Navy is the largest, most capable navy in the world, with the highest combined battle fleet tonnage. The U.S. Navy has the world's largest aircraft carrier fleet, with ten in service, two in the reserve fleet, and three new carriers under construction. The service has 328,194 personnel on active duty and 101,199 in the Navy Reserve. It has 272 deployable combat vessels and more than 3,700 aircraft in active service as of February 2016.
The U.S. Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, which was established during the American Revolutionary War and was essentially disbanded as a separate entity shortly thereafter. It played a major role in the American Civil War by blockading the Confederacy and seizing control of its rivers. It played the central role in the World War II defeat of Japan. The 21st century U.S. Navy maintains a sizable global presence, deploying in such areas as East Asia, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East. It is a blue-water navy with the ability to project force onto the littoral regions of the world, engage in forward areas during peacetime, and rapidly respond to regional crises, making it an active player in U.S. foreign and defense policy.

United States Army
The United States Army (USA) is the largest branch of the United States Armed Forces and performs land-based military operations. It is one of the seven uniformed services of the United States, and is designated as the Army of the United States in the United States Constitution, Article 2, Section 2, Clause 1 and United States Code, Title 10, Subtitle B, Chapter 301, Section 3001. As the largest and senior branch of the U.S. military, the modern U.S. Army has its roots in the Continental Army, which was formed (14 June 1775) to fight the American Revolutionary War (1775–83)—before the U.S. was established as a country. After the Revolutionary War, the Congress of the Confederation created the United States Army on 3 June 1784, to replace the disbanded Continental Army. The United States Army considers itself descended from the Continental Army, and dates its institutional inception from the origin of that armed force in 1775.

World War II
World War II (WWII or WW2), also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, although related conflicts began earlier. It involved the vast majority of the world's nations—including all of the great powers—eventually forming two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. It was the most widespread war in history, and directly involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. In a state of "total war", the major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, erasing the distinction between civilian and military resources. Marked by mass deaths of civilians, including the Holocaust (in which approximately 11 million people were killed) and the strategic bombing of industrial and population centres (in which approximately one million were killed, and which included the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki), it resulted in an estimated 50 million to 85 million fatalities. These made World War II the deadliest conflict in human history.

But unlike all carriers before her, the Theodore Roosevelt was the first aircraft carrier to be assembled through modular construction – which essentially worked by pre-building large sections, hoisting them into place using a huge gantry crane, and then welding them together. This process shaved an amazing 16 months off the Theodore Roosevelt’s construction timeline, and proved so effective that every aircraft carrier since her has been built using the same method. Fact Four: During World War II, the United State Navy lost a total of twelve carriers to enemy action. Of these losses, five had names that would fight on as new carriers later in the war. These ships include our nations first carrier, the USS Langley CV-1, which was crippled by Japanese dive-bombers off the coast of Java in 1942. A second Langley, CVL-27, was commissioned in 1943 and took part in attacks on the Marshall Islands and Okinawa. During the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942, the USS Lexington CV-2 was sunk by a Japanese torpedo. It later came back as CV-16, which was commissioned in February 1943 and saw extensive action during the Battle of the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf. In June 1942, the USS Yorktown CV-5 was sunk at the Battle of Midway. That ship’s name lived on as the USS Yorktown CV-10, which was commissioned in the spring of 1943 and helped launch raids on islands such as Tarawa. The USS Wasp CV-7 was sunk shortly after the Battle of Guadalcanal in the summer of 1942. Its namesake, CV-18, was commissioned in November 1943 and participated in the attack on Okinawa. And finally, the USS Hornet CV-8 was fatally wounded during the Battle of Santa Cruz in October 1942. The Hornet was later resurrected as CV-12, commissioned in November 1943. That ship participated in raids on Tinian, Saipan, Guam and Iwo Jima. Fact Five: For more than forty years, the United States has operated the largest aircraft carriers in the world. Our Nimitz-class supercarriers – the first of which was commissioned in early 1975 – have an overall length of 1,092 feet and a full load displacement of approximately 97,000 tons. They tower an impressive 20 stories above the water, and have a flight deck that’s 4.5 acres big. But as massive as these warships are, our newest supercarriers – the Gerald R. Ford class – are even slightly larger. While these mega-ships have the same overall length of 1,092 feet, their full load displacement is about 100,000 tons – or about 3,000 tons more than the Nimitz-class. -

In honor of the Pearl Harbor anniversary, we look at some interesting facts related to the “date which will live in infamy”. Hosted by Benari Poulten, a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserve and veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. December 7th, 1941 – “a date which will live in infamy”. This is Five Things You Don’t Know About Pearl Harbor. Fact One: The December 7th, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor spurred direct US involvement in World War II. But while you may think that the decision to enter the war was unanimously approved, it actually wasn’t. In fact, when Congress voted to declare war on Japan the day after the attack, Jeannette Rankin of Montana was the sole dissenting voice. A lifelong pacifist who had also voted against America’s involvement in World War I, Rankin’s decision was met with hisses in the gallery and pleas from her colleagues to change her vote, or, at the very least, abstain from casting it. When she refused to do so, Rankin outraged so many people that she effectively ended her political career… And thanks to her single dissenting voice, the Declaration of War against Japan passed with a final tally of 388 to 1. Fact Two: While we’re all familiar with the air attack that took place at Pearl Harbor, a lesser known part of the story is the fact that the Japanese also deployed several midget submarines for assaults against the island. One of these subs – commanded by Kazuo Sakamaki – became disabled and stuck on a beach in Oahu. Although Sakamaki attempted to blow his submarine up, the explosives failed to go off – and he was ultimately captured as America’s first prisoner of war in World War II. After the attack ended, Sakamaki’s submarine was recovered intact, and was taken on tour across the United States, where it was used to help raise money through the purchase of war bonds. Fact Three: While US military forces worked to rebuild Pearl Harbor in the weeks following December 7th, the Japanese initiated a plan to attack the island for a second time. Codenamed “Operation K” this second assault took place on March 4, 1942, when two Japanese “flying boat” aircraft flew across the Pacific, refueled via submarine in the northwest Hawaiian islands, and arrived over Oahu in the middle of the night. Although their intention was to bomb the base at Pearl Harbor, blackout conditions and heavy cloud cover caused the pilots to become disoriented – and forced them to mistakenly drop their payload far off target. The resulting blast damaged a few homes and buildings, but, thankfully, resulted in zero casualties. Fact Four: Although the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor resulted in massive devastation and an immense loss of American lives, there were a few US ships that managed to escape unscathed. Among them, was the USS Phoenix CL-46. A Brooklyn-class light cruiser, the Phoenix was anchored southeast of Ford Island on the morning of the assault. Since it was not considered a primary target, it was largely passed over by the Japanese. Throughout the remainder of World War II, the Phoenix escorted convoys, and helped support troop landings throughout the Pacific Theater. In 1951, six years after the war ended, the Phoenix was sold to the Argentine Navy, where it was ultimately renamed the ARA General Belgrano. There, the ship continued to serve for another 31 years – until, in 1982, it was sunk by a British submarine during the Falklands War. Fact Five: Attracting more than 1 million visitors each year, the USS Arizona Memorial is perhaps the best known World War II monument in the world. Officially dedicated on May 30th, 1962, the $500,000 structure was funded through donations from both the public and private sector. These donations were solicited through the help of several organizations and individuals – including none other than the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. Elvis, who had recently finished a two-year stint in the Army, performed a benefit concert at Pearl Harbor in March of 1961. Singing favorites like “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Don’t Be Cruel”, the concert raised nearly $65,000 – and was the last time Elvis performed on stage until his return to Las Vegas almost 8 years later. America’s Navy has a long, proud tradition that stretches back more than 230 years to the days of the Revolutionary War.
This is Five Things You Don’t Know About the US Navy.
Fact One: While everyone knows Neil Armstrong’s role in the 1969 moon landing, his service to our nation actually began with a stint in the US Navy.
In August 1947, Armstrong enlisted in the US Naval Reserve. He reported for active duty in February 1949.
He then went on to fly 78 missions as a naval aviator during the Korean War – many of which were as an armed reconnaissance pilot. In fact, on September 3rd, 1952, while flying a Grumman F9F Panther, Armstrong was hit by anti-aircraft fire. Although he was able to fly the plane back to friendly territory, it was so severely damaged that he was forced to eject.
After completing his tour of duty in Korea, Armstrong opted to stay in the US Naval Reserves for another 8 years, finally resigning in 1960.
So, the first man to set foot on the moon was actually a US Navy veteran.
Fact Two: Although the “Silent Service” represented less than 2% of all naval personnel during World War II, they accounted for the highest casualty percentage of all armed forces.
Throughout the course of the war, 52 US Navy submarines were lost, taking with them more than 3,500 officers and enlisted men. Those losses average out to approximately 22% of all submariners being killed in action.
Fact Three: Today the 21-gun Salute is fired in honor of the President, ex-President and President-elect of the United States, as well as to honor a national flag or the chief of state or sovereign of a foreign nation.
The tradition of the salute, however, actually dates back to the time of wooden warships. When approaching a port, the ship would fire all of its cannons out to sea as a means of showing it was disarmed and therefore not a threat.
Fact Four: While the US Navy recognizes its birthday as October 13th, 1775, it does not take an official stance on its birthplace. As a matter of fact, no less than six American towns and cities actually lay claim to the title.
Included on the list is Machias, Maine, who claims the distinction because that’s where a small sloop armed with American woodsmen seized a Royal Navy schooner on June the 12th 1775.
Beverly, Massachusetts and Marblehead, Massachusetts, have a competing claim that centers around the fact that in September 1775 General George Washington ordered the schooner Hannah fitted out as the first armed sea vessel of the American Revolution. Because the Hannah was outfitted in Beverly, but the captain and crew hailed from Marblehead, both towns claim to be the ship’s homeport, and therefore the Navy’s birthplace.
In addition to these three, Providence, Rhode Island also claims the title because their residents were the first to propose a resolution to build and equip an American fleet in October 1775.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, claims to be the birthplace because that’s where the Continental Congress met on October 13th, when it voted to establish the Continental Navy and resolved to build two armed vessels.
And finally, Whitehall, New York, claims the distinction because that’s where the first ships were actually built in the summer of 1776.
Fact Five: The current US Navy leads the world in terms of size, strength and global reach. However, in comparison to its peak strength during World War II, today’s Navy is downright tiny.
Remarkably, between 1941 and 1945 alone, the US Navy added nearly 6,000 ships to its total strength. This included an impressive 27 aircraft carriers, 77 escort carriers and more than 360 destroyers.
Including the battleships, cruisers, destroyer escorts, transports and countless other vessels, this amounted to a peak strength of more than 6,700 operational ships during the war.

In fact, more than half the countries in the world have less than 90 aircraft in their entire air force. So, just one Nimitz-class carrier has more air power than the majority of nations have in their whole arsenal.
Fact Two: While many of us can easily picture the aircraft carriers of World War II engaging in epic battles in the Pacific, it’s amazing to think that two – the USS Sable and the USS Wolverine – were actually stationed on the Great Lakes as training ships.
Originally built as commercial paddle steamers, both the Sable and the Wolverine were purchased by the US Navy in 1942 and converted into carriers. Home ported at Navy Pier in Chicago, they were part of what was called the “Cornbelt Fleet” of training vessels.
While they weren’t technically warships because they lacked a hangar deck, elevators and armament, they were extremely valuable in helping pilots practice takeoffs and landings in realistic conditions.
As a matter of fact, the two ships together trained more than 17,800 pilots. And one of the flyers to qualify on the Sable was none other than future president George H. W. Bush.

Fact Two: While many of us can easily picture the aircraft carriers of World War II engaging in epic battles in the Pacific, it’s amazing to think that two – the USS Sable and the USS Wolverine – were actually stationed on the Great Lakes as training ships.
Originally built as commercial paddle steamers, both the Sable and the Wolverine were purchased by the US Navy in 1942 and converted into carriers. Home ported at Navy Pier in Chicago, they were part of what was called the “Cornbelt Fleet” of training vessels.
While they weren’t technically warships because they lacked a hangar deck, elevators and armament, they were extremely valuable in helping pilots practice takeoffs and landings in realistic conditions.
As a matter of fact, the two ships together trained more than 17,800 pilots. And one of the flyers to qualify on the Sable was none other than future president George H. W. Bush.
Fact Three: Known as “TR” or the “Big Stick” by most folks in the Navy, the USS Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71 is the fourth Nimitz-class aircraft carrier.
Her keel was laid down on October 31st 1981, at Newport News, Virginia. But unlike all carriers before her, the Theodore Roosevelt was the first aircraft carrier to be assembled through modular construction – which essentially worked by pre-building large sections, hoisting them into place using a huge gantry crane, and then welding them together.
This process shaved an amazing 16 months off the Theodore Roosevelt’s construction timeline, and proved so effective that every aircraft carrier since her has been built using the same method.
Fact Four: During World War II, the United State Navy lost a total of twelve carriers to enemy action. Of these losses, five had names that would fight on as new carriers later in the war.
These ships include our nations first carrier, the USS Langley CV-1, which was crippled by Japanese dive-bombers off the coast of Java in 1942. A second Langley, CVL-27, was commissioned in 1943 and took part in attacks on the Marshall Islands and Okinawa.
During the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942, the USS Lexington CV-2 was sunk by a Japanese torpedo. It later came back as CV-16, which was commissioned in February 1943 and saw extensive action during the Battle of the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf.
In June 1942, the USS Yorktown CV-5 was sunk at the Battle of Midway. That ship’s name lived on as the USS Yorktown CV-10, which was commissioned in the spring of 1943 and helped launch raids on islands such as Tarawa.
The USS Wasp CV-7 was sunk shortly after the Battle of Guadalcanal in the summer of 1942. Its namesake, CV-18, was commissioned in November 1943 and participated in the attack on Okinawa.
And finally, the USS Hornet CV-8 was fatally wounded during the Battle of Santa Cruz in October 1942. The Hornet was later resurrected as CV-12, commissioned in November 1943. That ship participated in raids on Tinian, Saipan, Guam and Iwo Jima.
Fact Five: For more than forty years, the United States has operated the largest aircraft carriers in the world.
Our Nimitz-class supercarriers – the first of which was commissioned in early 1975 – have an overall length of 1,092 feet and a full load displacement of approximately 97,000 tons. They tower an impressive 20 stories above the water, and have a flight deck that’s 4.5 acres big.
But as massive as these warships are, our newest supercarriers – the Gerald R. Ford class – are even slightly larger. While these mega-ships have the same overall length of 1,092 feet, their full load displacement is about 100,000 tons – or about 3,000 tons more than the Nimitz-class.

December 7th, 1941 – “a date which will live in infamy”.
This is Five Things You Don’t Know About Pearl Harbor.
Fact One: The December 7th, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor spurred direct US involvement in World War II. But while you may think that the decision to enter the war was unanimously approved, it actually wasn’t.
In fact, when Congress voted to declare war on Japan the day after the attack, Jeannette Rankin of Montana was the sole dissenting voice.
A lifelong pacifist who had also voted against America’s involvement in World War I, Rankin’s decision was met with hisses in the gallery and pleas from her colleagues to change her vote, or, at the very least, abstain from casting it.
When she refused to do so, Rankin outraged so many people that she effectively ended her political career… And thanks to her single dissenting voice, the Declaration of War against Japan passed with a final tally of 388 to 1.
Fact Two: While we’re all familiar with the air attack that took place at Pearl Harbor, a lesser known part of the story is the fact that the Japanese also deployed several midget submarines for assaults against the island.
One of these subs – commanded by Kazuo Sakamaki – became disabled and stuck on a beach in Oahu. Although Sakamaki attempted to blow his submarine up, the explosives failed to go off – and he was ultimately captured as America’s first prisoner of war in World War II.
After the attack ended, Sakamaki’s submarine was recovered intact, and was taken on tour across the United States, where it was used to help raise money through the purchase of war bonds.
Fact Three: While US military forces worked to rebuild Pearl Harbor in the weeks following December 7th, the Japanese initiated a plan to attack the island for a second time.
Codenamed “Operation K” this second assault took place on March 4, 1942, when two Japanese “flying boat” aircraft flew across the Pacific, refueled via submarine in the northwest Hawaiian islands, and arrived over Oahu in the middle of the night.
Although their intention was to bomb the base at Pearl Harbor, blackout conditions and heavy cloud cover caused the pilots to become disoriented – and forced them to mistakenly drop their payload far off target.
The resulting blast damaged a few homes and buildings, but, thankfully, resulted in zero casualties.
Fact Four: Although the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor resulted in massive devastation and an immense loss of American lives, there were a few US ships that managed to escape unscathed.
Among them, was the USS Phoenix CL-46. A Brooklyn-class light cruiser, the Phoenix was anchored southeast of Ford Island on the morning of the assault. Since it was not considered a primary target, it was largely passed over by the Japanese.
Throughout the remainder of World War II, the Phoenix escorted convoys, and helped support troop landings throughout the Pacific Theater.
In 1951, six years after the war ended, the Phoenix was sold to the Argentine Navy, where it was ultimately renamed the ARA General Belgrano.
There, the ship continued to serve for another 31 years – until, in 1982, it was sunk by a British submarine during the Falklands War.
Fact Five: Attracting more than 1 million visitors each year, the USS Arizona Memorial is perhaps the best known World War II monument in the world.
Officially dedicated on May 30th, 1962, the $500,000 structure was funded through donations from both the public and private sector. These donations were solicited through the help of several organizations and individuals – including none other than the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley.
Elvis, who had recently finished a two-year stint in the Army, performed a benefit concert at Pearl Harbor in March of 1961. Singing favorites like “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Don’t Be Cruel”, the concert raised nearly $65,000 – and was the last time Elvis performed on stage until his return to Las Vegas almost 8 years later.
While the assault on Hawaii became famous throughout the world, the Japanese military actually attacked several other locations on December 7th.

Head downtown to take in some of Honolulu’s storied history. Close to Honolulu, Pearl Harbor was the scene of a major military tragedy. During an unexpected attack, practically the whole of the American Pacific fleet was bombed by the Japanese and destroyed. The attack on the U.S. naval base was the ultimate reason that the United States eventually took part in the Second World War.
In winter, the most dedicated surfers collect on Sunset Beach to experience the world's most sought-after waves, some of which are as high as the tallest church steeples. Between Kawela Bay and Haleiwa, each winter the best surfers in the world meet for the Surfing World Championships.

America’s Navy has a long, proud tradition that stretches back more than 230 years to the days of the Revolutionary War.
This is Five Things You Don’t Know About the US Navy.
Fact One: While everyone knows Neil Armstrong’s role in the 1969 moon landing, his service to our nation actually began with a stint in the US Navy.
In August 1947, Armstrong enlisted in the US Naval Reserve. He reported for active duty in February 1949.
He then went on to fly 78 missions as a naval aviator during the Korean War – many of which were as an armed reconnaissance pilot. In fact, on September 3rd, 1952, while flying a Grumman F9F Panther, Armstrong was hit by anti-aircraft fire. Although he was able to fly the plane back to friendly territory, it was so severely damaged that he was forced to eject.
After completing his tour of duty in Korea, Armstrong opted to stay in the US Naval Reserves for another 8 years, finally resigning in 1960.
So, the first man to set foot on the moon was actually a US Navy veteran.
Fact Two: Although the “Silent Service” represented less than 2% of all naval personnel during World War II, they accounted for the highest casualty percentage of all armed forces.
Throughout the course of the war, 52 US Navy submarines were lost, taking with them more than 3,500 officers and enlisted men. Those losses average out to approximately 22% of all submariners being killed in action.
Fact Three: Today the 21-gun Salute is fired in honor of the President, ex-President and President-elect of the United States, as well as to honor a national flag or the chief of state or sovereign of a foreign nation.
The tradition of the salute, however, actually dates back to the time of wooden warships. When approaching a port, the ship would fire all of its cannons out to sea as a means of showing it was disarmed and therefore not a threat.
Fact Four: While the US Navy recognizes its birthday as October 13th, 1775, it does not take an official stance on its birthplace. As a matter of fact, no less than six American towns and cities actually lay claim to the title.
Included on the list is Machias, Maine, who claims the distinction because that’s where a small sloop armed with American woodsmen seized a Royal Navy schooner on June the 12th 1775.
Beverly, Massachusetts and Marblehead, Massachusetts, have a competing claim that centers around the fact that in September 1775 General George Washington ordered the schooner Hannah fitted out as the first armed sea vessel of the American Revolution. Because the Hannah was outfitted in Beverly, but the captain and crew hailed from Marblehead, both towns claim to be the ship’s homeport, and therefore the Navy’s birthplace.
In addition to these three, Providence, Rhode Island also claims the title because their residents were the first to propose a resolution to build and equip an American fleet in October 1775.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, claims to be the birthplace because that’s where the Continental Congress met on October 13th, when it voted to establish the Continental Navy and resolved to build two armed vessels.
And finally, Whitehall, New York, claims the distinction because that’s where the first ships were actually built in the summer of 1776.
Fact Five: The current US Navy leads the world in terms of size, strength and global reach. However, in comparison to its peak strength during World War II, today’s Navy is downright tiny.
Remarkably, between 1941 and 1945 alone, the US Navy added nearly 6,000 ships to its total strength. This included an impressive 27 aircraft carriers, 77 escort carriers and more than 360 destroyers.
Including the battleships, cruisers, destroyer escorts, transports and countless other vessels, this amounted to a peak strength of more than 6,700 operational ships during the war.
