A sentence is a decree of punishment. In law, a sentence forms the final explicit act of a judge-ruled process, and also the symbolic principal act connected to his function. The sentence can generally involve a decree of imprisonment, a fine and/or other punishments against a defendant convicted of a crime. Those imprisoned for multiple crimes will serve a consecutive sentence (in which the period of imprisonment equals the sum of all the sentences), a concurrent sentence (in which the period of imprisonment equals the length of the longest sentence), or somewhere in between, sometimes subject to a cap. Additional sentences include: Intermediate or those served on the weekend (usually Fri-Sun), Determinate or a specific set amount of time (90 days) or Indeterminate which are those that have a minimum and maximum time (90 to 120 days). If a sentence gets reduced to a less harsh punishment, then the sentence is said to have been "mitigated" or "commuted". Rarely (depending on circumstances) murder charges are "mitigated" and reduced to manslaughter charges. However, in certain legal systems, a defendant may be punished beyond the terms of the sentence, e.g. social stigma, loss of governmental benefits, or, collectively, the collateral consequences of criminal charges.
Law is a system of rules that are enforced through social institutions to govern behavior. Laws can be made by a collective legislature or by a single legislator, resulting in statutes, by the executive through decrees and regulations, or by judges through binding precedent, normally in common law jurisdictions. Private individuals can create legally binding contracts, including arbitration agreements that may elect to accept alternative arbitration to the normal court process. The formation of laws themselves may be influenced by a constitution, written or tacit, and the rights encoded therein. The law shapes politics, economics, history and society in various ways and serves as a mediator of relations between people.
A general distinction can be made between (a) civil law jurisdictions (including Catholic canon law and socialist law), in which the legislature or other central body codifies and consolidates their laws, and (b) common law systems, where judge-made precedent is accepted as binding law. Historically, religious laws played a significant role even in settling of secular matters, which is still the case in some religious communities, particularly Jewish, and some countries, particularly Islamic. Islamic Sharia law is the world's most widely used religious law.
Lionel Andrés "Leo" Messi (Spanish pronunciation: [ljoˈnel anˈdɾes ˈmesi]; born 24 June 1987) is an Argentine professional footballer who plays as a forward for Spanish club Barcelona and the Argentina national team. Often considered the best player in the world and rated by many in the sport as the greatest of all time, Messi is the only football player in history to win the FIFA Ballon d'Or five times, four of which he won consecutively, and the first player to win three European Golden Shoes. With Barcelona he has won seven La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League titles, as well as three Copa del Rey titles. A prolific goalscorer, Messi holds the records for most goals scored in La Liga (299), a La Liga season (50), a calendar year (91), a Champions League match (five), and most Champions League seasons (five).
Born and raised in central Argentina, Messi was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency as a child. At age 13, he relocated to Spain to join Barcelona, who agreed to pay for his medical treatment. After a fast progression through Barcelona's youth academy, Messi made his competitive debut aged 17 in October 2004. Despite being injury-prone during his early career, he established himself as an integral player for the club within the next three years, finishing 2007 as a finalist for both the Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year award, a feat he repeated the following year. His first uninterrupted campaign came in the 2008–09 season, during which he helped Barcelona achieve the first treble in Spanish football. At 22 years old, Messi won the Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year award by record voting margins.

The hostile and ill forces that besiege business holders in Nigeria, more especially the current economic recession has made most people more desperate to jet off the country. This young man simply known as KC is one of the many Nigerians affected by this situation. He is making an unbridle pursue to "escape" Nigeria with no discernable structure to survive and prosper abroad. No doubt so many of our brothers and sisters end up victims of alleged drug peddlers and other social vices. Although KC has not raised the money to sponsor his journey to Indonesia. Harco construction is appealing a sentence ordering it to fund public service announcements on worker safety. The contracting company was recently convicted of manslaughter and criminal neglect following a Manhattan trench collapse that killed a 22-year-old Ecuadorean worker. Under current law, contractors face a $10,000 penalty for criminal convictions. According to New York City construction accident attorney Edgar Romano, stiffer penalties would compel contractors and subcontractors to ensure worker safety. http://www.workerslaw.com/construction-accident-lawyers-new-york-city/

In the first lecture of our Mini Law School series, we look at dilemmas in Canadian sentencing law. "What we see on the news tends to be the 'bottom line' of the judge's sentence," explains Professor Kaiser. "What we don't often have access to are the full reasons given by the court, and this can be really frustrating for members of the public who may perceive a sentence as being 'too lenient'. But sentencing isn't as easy as you might think! You can't just say 'lock them up and throw away the key'—among other things, you have to consider the protection of society and how that is best achieved, the pain of victims, the rehabilitation and reintegration of most offenders, and the messages that the sentence sends. In my lecture, I'll review the context and the basic law on sentencing and th...
Why are some convicted criminal defendants sentenced more harshly than others? If two people commit the same offense, and are convicted of it, sometimes one goes home, and the other to prison. Why is that? Judge Alan Moats and Judge Russell Clawges join Dan Ringer to discuss Sentencing in Criminal Cases on this episode of The Law Works.
**Fight Censorship on YouTube** KINGMAN, KAN. - Former sheriff's deputy and law enforcement instructor Brett Seacat was sentenced Monday to life in prison for the April 2011 murder of his wife, Vashti. However, Seacat, 37, spent the moments before the sentencing delivering a rambling speech in which he accused his deceased wife's family of abuse and District Court Judge Larry Solomon of seeking fame and a nomination to the Kansas Supreme Court. "Go ahead and pass the sentence that you hope will get you the biggest headline... You are going to hell for what you've done in this case," Seacat told Solomon. "After all, you purchased it with your soul," Seacat said of his conviction. "So you've earned it." "Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act of 1976: Allowance is ma...
Barry Mitchell, Professor in Criminal Law & Criminal Justice, delivers his professorial lecture. With the possible exception of genocide, murder is widely regarded as the most serious offence on the criminal law's menu. Until barely half a century ago convicted murderers in England and Wales could expect to be hanged unless pardoned through the intervention of the Home Secretary (in which case the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment). As a result of the Homicide Act 1957 and the Murder (Abolition of Death Penalty) Act 1965 the death penalty for murder was abolished and replaced by the mandatory sentence of life imprisonment (or equivalent). But there was a conspicuous lack of detailed investigation and discussion of the mandatory life sentence; instead, it was assumed tha...
As the 2010 session of the West Virginia Legislature gets underway, the West Virginia Law Institute is looking to introduce legislation that will reform sentencing in criminal cases. Dan Ringer will join Professors David Hardesty and Robert Bastress of the WVU Law School.

U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL) talking about the bipartisan "Smarter Sentencing Act" at the "Rethinking the War on Drugs" symposium at Northwestern Law School on Feb. 20, 2014. The Smarter Sentencing Act "will reduce certain mandatory sentences for nonviolent drug offenses, allow federal judges to waive certain mandatory minimum sentences when individual circumstances warranted, and allow certain inmates who were sentenced under the old crack powered sentencing disparity to petition courts and prosecutors for a review of their cases consistent of current law the 2010 Fair Sentencing Act. The Smarter Sentencing Act also "directs the U.S. Attorney General to invest the savings from these sentencing changes and programs."
