Organisers said there was a crowd of over 2,000 to show their opposition to proposals to reform the abortion law in Spain. The new measures which the conservative government has approved will outlaw abortion except in certain cases where a woman's health is at risk. "This law doesn't respect the minimum rights that other laws in Europe do. This law treats women like we are minors," said one demonstrator while another added: "What we are asking the Spanish government today is to review the bill that it intends to make law to ensure the right to abortion isn't restricted as it is in the proposal." The protesters marched from the embassy to the European Parliament in an attempt to get Spanish MEPs to put pressure on their government. The march attracted activists from beyond Spain. "I'm here today because we have a very similar situation in Lithuania, currently in the parliament there is an abortion ban bill being decided," said Lina Vospliute from Lithuania. A further demonstration is planned in front of the Spanish Embassy in Paris on Saturday which the protesters are calling 'The World March of Women'. Spain: Protesters besiege parliament over anti-protest law
Hundreds of protesters surrounded parliament in Madrid to demonstrate against proposed new anti-protest legislation, Saturday. Protesters held signs that said 'freedom to protest', and 'People's Party, shame of Spain!', while police and barricades prevented them from getting any closer to the parliament building, which was unoccupied. The new laws, drafted by Spain's ruling People's Party, would introduce fines for activists taking part in unauthorised protests, publishing images of police, or interrupting public events. Demonstrating near parliament without permission could result in a fine as high as €600,000 ($824,040), while insulting a police officer could set a demonstrator back by up to €30,000 ($41,202). EU Parliament urges Spain to scrap new abortion law
EU Parliament urges Spain to scrap new abortion law
MEPs urged the Spanish government on Thursday to withdraw a new proposal that will restrict abortion rights in Spain. In a bid to gather conservative support and keeping an electoral promise by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, the Spanish government backed a proposal for a tougher abortion law earlier in December. The new bill does not allow women to finish their pregnancy at an early stage, with the exception of rape cases or when the mother's health is at risk. "Spain has the right to decide, but women have the right to decide on their bodies and on reproductive rights that affect them personally. They have the right to decide whether or not they want an abortion." said Swedish GUE/NGL MEP and Chairman of the EP Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality Mikael Gustafsson. Except for the conservatives, all parties in the European Parliament do not support the new proposal. Pro-choice groups warned that it can pose a threat for women as the number of illegal abortions might increase. MEPs also feared that other countries might follow suit. "If we allow this law to go through in Spain, then laws on reproductive health across Europe will be under threat and may be seriously affected,", said Spanish Izquierda Unida MEP Ascensión de las Heras. "In the context of the situation in Spain at the moment, with a significant rate of unemployment, poorest women who are the most disadvantaged will suffer from this change in law, they will no longer have access to safe and low cost abortions." said Portuguese GUE MEP Inês Cristina Zuber. Currently in Spain, a woman has the right to abortion up to the 14th week of pregnancy and up to the 22nd week in case of foetal deformities.- published: 16 Jan 2014

They are delighted that the government wants to change the law back to what it was in 1985, making it much harder for women to terminate unwanted pregnancies. New legislation proposed by the ruling conservative People's Party would see abortions allowed only for victims of rape or where there is a risk to the mother-to-be's physical or psychological health. Pro-choice campaigners are outraged and they, too, made their feelings clear as the government bill was unveiled. Mariqueta Vazquez was among a group of abortion rights demonstrators protesting outside government headquarters. "Ideology? Let each one of us have her own," she said. "It is not compulsory to have an abortion for people who don't want to. There are always lots of reasons why women have an abortion. They don't want to. No woman wants to!" Opposition Socialists says they will fight the proposed new law which would roll back reforms the party made when it was in government. But the bill is expected to easily pass in parliament where the People's Party has an absolute majority. Spain: Pro-life protesters continue fight against abortion amid new law
Over 100 pro life supporters marched in Barcelona on Saturday towards the Sagrada Familia basilica to protest against all practices of abortion, following the government's recent new termination law. Since the state's approval December 20, Spain only permits the procedure of abortion in the cases of rape, or for serious mental or physical risks to the mother. The decision has provoked widespread protests against the change in legislation all across the country, yet Saturday's pro life protesters were allowed for the very first time during one of these types of demonstrations to be granted access inside the cathedral, and given the go-ahead to kiss the statue of Jesus. The protesters are continuing to demonstrate against all forms of abortion under any circumstances, believing terminations to be the worst kind of 'sin' possible. Spain follows the route of Ireland, which legalised abortion under limited circumstances earlier in 2013. Opinions are divided in Spain where the conservative government has unveiled a bill that will limit women's right to terminate their pregnancies to what it was in 1985. Abortions will only be allowed for victims of rape and in cases where there is a risk to the physical or psychological health of the mother-to-be. The Socialist opposition is outraged at the moves which roll back reforms made when it was in government. "One of the things we can try to do now is get parliament to reject this law," said Socialist Deputy Secretary Elena Valenciano, urging the ruling People's Party to give its female members the freedom to vote according to their conscience. Pro-choice protesters won't let the law pass without a fight. Spain: Marchers say abortion laws take Spain back to Franco
Tens of thousands of people protested in Madrid on Saturday, against new abortion legislation proposed by Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz Gallardon. Police erected barricades around the parliament building, keeping the bulk of the demonstrators away from Spain's centre of political power. Activists demanded the Minister's resignation, saying that his proposed law would remove the decision of whether to give birth from women. Protesters said the new law affecting women turn back the clock to the days when Francisco Franco was the dictator of Spain. "They want to impose a law that is totally incongruous," said Sonia, a demonstrator and school teacher. "It cannot be that a man decides what we the women have to do. We are now tired of enduring so many injustices in our country and we are at our limits. They want to go back to past eras, to Francismo, and we are not willing to allow that."
