Made from a single piece of wood, some ōdaiko come from trees that are hundreds of years old.

Kodō (鼓童?) is a professional taiko drumming troupe. Based on Sado Island, Japan, they have had a role in popularizing taiko drumming, both in Japan and abroad. They regularly tour Japan, Europe, and the United States.
Although the main focus of the performance is taiko drumming, other traditional Japanese musical instruments such as fue and shamisen make an appearance on stage as do traditional dance and vocal performance. Kodo's performance include pieces based on the traditional rhythms of regional Japan, pieces composed for Kodo by contemporary songwriters, and pieces written by Kodo members themselves. The numbers that Kodo perform can change from concert to concert. Kodo's performance normally lasts for about one hour and forty minutes.
In Japanese the word "Kodo" conveys two meanings: "heartbeat" the primal source of all rhythm and, read in a different way, the word can mean "children of the drum," a reflection of Kodo's desire to play their drums simply, with the heart of a child.
Kodo strives to both preserve and re-interpret traditional Japanese performing arts. From worldwide tours and research trips, Kodo brings back to Sado world music and experiences which now exert a strong influence on the group's performances and compositions. They also collaborate with other artists and composers.
Since their debut at the Berlin Festival in 1981, Kodo have given over 3,100 performances on five continents, spending about a third of the year overseas, a third touring in Japan and a third resting and preparing new material on Sado Island.

Alright here it is: the 2nd Taiko Set!
After seeing how many ppl (especially fellow martial artists) enjoyed the first one I wanted to give you guys a completely new set. Thank you for all the encouragement and great stories you've shared!
Unfortunately I was unable to create an entirely new mix with cc-licensed music alone so this Taiko Set is neither public domain nor cc-licensed. You can still use it if you want to but at your own risk.
Also I can't provide any real tracklist because the set is a lot more sampled and mixed than the first one. All I can really tell ou is that I used various tracks and samples from the soundtrack to "Total War: Shogun", "Far Cry 4", "Ninja Assassin", "Mini Ninjas" and performances by various groups who played for the "Taiko pro Series" and some cc-licensed songs by DJ-Rec0il and Jacob Cadmus.

Many of you who don't follow my tumblr may not be aware that I'm currently living in Tokyo for a year. I'm half way through and really enjoying it so far. I've tried to share my experiences on my blog here: http://jmcvee.tumblr.com/
This video seemed to go down really well so I figured I would share it with my youtube homies too. I was playing a Mario kart arcade game when this guy playing Taiko No Tatsujin next to us started staring at us and doing crazy faces while playing. He then went on to perform a few songs for us and this is one of the recordings I managed to get.
On the video front. I do not have anything SFM planned currently. But I am starting production on my own independent PC game soon with some familiar faces and celebrities involved. When it's ready to share I'll post about it here first. Until then, enjoy the show.

Third clip from this unknown (to me) show. The shamisen is played with powerful accompanyment from a taiko drummer. Forgive me for not sharing the artists names, I am relatively new to the Japanese language, let alone 漢字 (Kanji). I hope I spelled that right :D

Taiko (太鼓?) means "drum" in Japanese (etymologically "great" or "wide drum"). Outside Japan, the word is often used to refer to any of the various Japanese drums (和太鼓, "wa-daiko", "Japanese drum", in Japanese) and to the relatively recent art-form of ensemble taiko drumming (sometimes called more specifically, "kumi-daiko" (組太鼓)). The performances can last between 5 and 25 minutes and typically follow a jo-ha-kyū (beginning, middle, end/rapid, sudden, urgent, and emergency) structure, which means the performance will speed up significantly towards the grand finale.
Japanese taiko drums have been developed into a wide range of percussion instruments that are used in both Japanese folk and classical musical traditions.
Taiko, in general, are 3 sticks percussion instruments. With the exception of the "kotsuzumi" and "ootsuzumi", all taiko are struck with bachi. They have heads on both sides of the drum body, and a sealed resonating cavity. Taiko are also characterized by a high amount of tension on the drums heads, with a correspondingly high pitch relative to body size. This high tension likely developed in response to Japan's wet and humid summers when most festivals take place. Many taiko are not tunable, and a drum with high head tension would counteract the slacking effects of humidity.

Plot: Akihabara is a Tokyo district full of manga, anime, electronics, video games, figurines, etc. It is a place that gathers fanatics of such themes, people who are commonly referred to as otaku. The solos kick off in full swing at 8:20 if your'e impatient, but try watch it from the beginning or you miss the dynamics of the gradual buildup - very awe inspiring, you'll almost applaud yourself. -

Alright here it is: the 2nd Taiko Set! After seeing how many ppl (especially fellow martial artists) enjoyed the first one I wanted to give you guys a completely new set. Thank you for all the encouragement and great stories you've shared! Unfortunately I was unable to create an entirely new mix with cc-licensed music alone so this Taiko Set is neither public domain nor cc-licensed. You can still use it if you want to but at your own risk. Also I can't provide any real tracklist because the set is a lot more sampled and mixed than the first one. All I can really tell ou is that I used various tracks and samples from the soundtrack to "Total War: Shogun", "Far Cry 4", "Ninja Assassin", "Mini Ninjas" and performances by various groups who played for the "Taiko pro Series" and some cc-lice... -

Ondekoza is a professional taiko drumming troupe based at the foot of Mt. Fuji in Japan. Formed in 1969, they have been widely influential in introducing and popularizing taiko drumming around the globe. Ondekoza is a professional taiko drumming troupe based at the foot of Mt. Fuji in Japan. Formed in 1969, they have been widely influential in introducing and popularizing taiko drumming around the globe. They are known to have set the groundwork for many of the styles seen in taiko today. Based on the philosophy of "running" and "drumming" as one, Ondekoza continues to run, drum and journey around the world today.
鬼太鼓座は1969年、故田耕(でん たがやす)の構想のもとに集まった若者達により佐渡で結成。鬼太鼓座の活動の根源にあるのが、「走ることと音楽とは一体であり、それは人生のドラマとエネルギーの反映だ」という「走楽論」。走り、叩き、舞う。富士の山鬼太鼓座の挑戦は続きます。

In 2014, we made this drum, filming the process. Our goal is to share our process with the Taiko Community with the hope that other groups can make taiko drums themselves.
