Bavaria is the largest German territory. Its typical atmosphere is given by little towns and villages. Wooden shells, high red tiled roofs with many little skylights, old signboards, town walls, ancient churches, domes and steeples, narrow streets and riverbanks, huge green areas and many flowers take us to a wonderfully calm and merry world. Beside the well known Octoberfest holder Munich and the medieval older town look keeper Nuremberg, Regensburg and Augsburg there are castles like the romantic Neuschwanstein that are waiting for the traveller. There are glittering lakes in the green pinewood like the Königssee and the Chiemsee, and mountaintops like the snow-capped Zugspitze. Though Bavaria is only one territory within the German territories everyone can feel it is quite different from the others. It is richer, friendlier and its atmosphere is more delightful than the country’s other territories.

Munich and the Foothills of the Alps
In Munich, where locals specialize in good living, we visit boisterous markets and go-for-Baroque palaces, while office workers surf in the Isar River. Heading into the foothills of the Alps, we tour the fairy-tale castles of "Mad" King Ludwig, and climb to the highest point in Germany atop the Zugspitze. Then we cross into Tirol to conquer a desolate ruined castle.

Bavaria Travel Guide http://bit.ly/122uYVH
Shepherd Entertainment gives you the history of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which is a mountain resort town in Bavaria, Germany.
Garmisch was a small alpine dwelling inhabited by shepherds but the neighboring, Partenkirchen already existed in Roman times and was called Parthenon. The residents of the two villages probably didn't like each other much. They even built their churches with their backs to each other lest they should meet by chance. All this changed in 1935 when the two villages were united in order to have better chances at the tender to organize the winter Olympics. This is when they built their ice skating stadium that was once the biggest in Europe. The three run ski jump stadium at the foot of the -- and the bobsled track surrounded by mountain lakes. The city is still developing and it's become one of the most well known vacation and ski resorts of Germany.
However, it's not only a paradise for winter sports. One of Europe's biggest swimming complexes and the first wellness center Auschwitz was built in the 1970s. It has a water surface of 2000 square meters, a wave pool and an open beach. In summer, people can also swim in Riessersee, -- and Eibsee. Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a real holiday resort with a well kept holiday park, theater, confectioneries and restaurants. Richard Strauss bought a villa here from the royalties who received for his opera Salome and lived here until his death. We can find villas similar to Strauss' in both parts of the city mixing with farm houses built in alpine style.
There are some Franconia and Swabian, wooden beam structured houses called Fachberg houses but there are more Bavarian ones. The latter are shorter, stubbier. Earlier these frescoes also called luftmalerei used to portray religious scenes but today, they'd rather tell the story of the house itself or the family who owns the house. On the walls of hotels and shops, they're a form of advertisement. The wall of Garmisch's oldest in inn, the Huszar is decorated with the picture of a dragon looking out the window.
The well kept gardens are full of flowers of an incredibly wide variety and naturally geraniums adorn all windowsills and railings. The new joint city hall was built in 1935 before the winter Olympics. The most remarkable event in the city surroundings is the passion play in Oberammergau. The inhabitants of the small mountain village have been performing the story of the passion of Christ every 10 years for 380 years now. Their ancestors took a vow to do this at the time of the great plague. The passion is performed for six month from morning until evening and is now a widely known event that draws hundreds of thousands of spectators.
A real technical relic, one of the old locomotives of the Zugspitzbahn is exhibited in front of the --house. New motor engines have taken its place in transportation which may not be prettier but are certainly more modern. Every winter, skiers, snow boarders and extreme sports lovers invade the mountains around Garmisch. The lower station of the Zugspitzbahn is near the stadium. There're several ways to go up the mountain including the cograils, cable cars, funiculars and ski lifts. But we can only get near the 2966m high summit with the Zugspitzbahn. Experienced hikers and mountain climbers can also reach the summit on foot in nine hours. The first person to reach the Zugspitz in this way was a Bavarian soldier in 1920.
The tracks wind between the houses on the western part of Garmisch then make their way up the steep hillside. Through the pine forests, we can see spectacular mountain lakes sparkling. The last stretch of the journey takes us through a long tunnel. Emerging from the tunnel, we are greeted by a beautiful small lake and after a couple of minutes, we reach the top station. On the summing, we'll find a ski lift and a resthouse with two coats of arms on its railings to show where Bavaria ends and where the Austrian province Tyrol begins. From the huge terrace, we can see the surrounding mountains of Vank, --. There's a small chapel on the snow speckled summit where victims of the mountains are commemorated.
The restaurant of the rest house offers tourists, mountaineers and skiers real Bavarian specialties and hot drinks. For our way down, we can also choose the cable car, the Seilbahn that takes us to the small lake of Eibsee instead of Garmisch. Eibsee is a crystal clear emerald colored mountain lake. Campgrounds and hotels have been built here and many people come here in summer to swim and row boats.

Shepherd Entertainment gives you the history of Bavaria, which is the largest state in Germany with an area of 70500 square
kilometers.
Bavaria is the largest state in Germany with an area of 70500 square kilometers. It has international borders with Switzerland and Austria in the south, and Austria and the Czech Republic on the east. Its plateau surrounded by hills is a real tourist paradise.
Berchtesgaden was built in the valley of the River Ache on the slopes of Lochstein and was an independent principality for almost 600 years. Its former Augustine monastery was used by the royal family as a castle from 1813. Its dormitorium houses and exhibition based on the art collection of Ruprecht, heir apparent to the throne. Many people visit the old salt mine, the Salzbergwerk. The exploitation rights of which were granted to the order by Friedrich Barbarossa.
However most people would like to see Hitler's eagle's nest but that was blown up in 1952 along with the neighboring castles of Goering and Borman. The dictator liked to rule from this Olympic height from where he could see not only Germany but also his homeland Austria. An archive and a research center for the crimes of fascism had been established on its ruins.

Bavaria Travel Guide http://bit.ly/122uYVH
Bayreuth is a sizable town and located in northern Bavaria, Germany. Its visitors can enjoy the Hermitage Castle, Richard
Wagner Museum and the Markgrafliches Opera House.
According to linguists, the name Bayreuth refers back to the forest that was cut down by the Bavarians to make room for the settlement. Whether this is true or not is unknown. The city itself was annexed to Bavaria only in 1810 and is the capital of Upper Franconia. Its population was made up of more Francs than Bavarians. The city's opera house is one of the last baroque opera houses in Europe that remained untouched. Friedrich Margrave and his wife Wilhelmina had it built starting in 1745 by the distinguished Italian specialist, Guiseppe Galli Bibiena. One of the neighbors of the opera house is the theater where lavish balls were held and the other is the old synagogue. The latter survived the Second World War only because is it so tightly built together with the opera that has lots of wooden structural elements. In order to protect the opera, the Nazis spared the synagogue.
The public considers Bayreuth to be Wagner's city. The composer had to flee because of his participation in the 1848 revolution and only returned to the German territory at the request of Ludwig II, an admirer of his art in 1864. First settled down in Munich and only moved to Bayreuth seven years later, where he lived until his death. His classical style family villa, the Wahnfried lies on the northeast edge of the Hofgarten and was turned into a memorial museum in the 1970s. specialists consider the most valuable part of the legacy to be the score of eight operas with their drafts, instructions for the orchestra and letters. The composer died in 1883 while on a trip to Venice and was buried in the garden of the villa. The -- or New Castle is also situated in the Hofgarten near Wahnfried. Today the baroque palace houses the local history collection including of course Wagner's statue and in the other wing, the rich collection of the national gallery can be seen.
Bayreuth is located on the mine river between the Fichtel Mountains and the Frankish Alp and was annexed to Bavaria by Napoleon. Three special buildings of the Margrave family can be seen around the city. In the park of the Fantasie Castle, we can visit the artificial lake and the rock cave. In the Eremitage Castle, we can look around in the gallery and in the dome of the Sun Temple, the sun god drives his bronze chariot drawn by four horses. The main façade is covered with crystals and semiprecious stones. The historical old town of Bayreuth occupies only a small area besides the opera house, the theater, the parish church and the buildings of the Hofgarten, the only things we can admire are the neat streets and the mostly classicist villas. But that's okay since everyone comes here because of Wagner anyway.
For decades, Richard Wagner had planned to build his own theater where he could direct his own plays but the death of his patron made implementation significantly harder. In the end, the foundation stone of the Bayreuth theater was laid down on his 59th birthday. The -- house that has become the mecca of Wagner fans stands on a 380m high hill. Gottfried Semper's original plans were simplified by Otto Bruckwald under Wagner's watching eye. The theater opened its gates in 1876 with the Ring of the Nibelung. But it took decades for the Bayreuth festival organized every summer to become really popular.

Many consider Konigsee with its dark green colored water the most beautiful Alpine lake. The 8km long yet only 2km wide lake is really deep, that's why its crystal clear water glistens in dark colors. On two sides, the lake is surrounded by tall steep cliffs that cast shadows on its surface causing the sun to seemingly set at 4p.m. The village of Konigsee is famous for its wooden boathouses. Here, we can take a speedboat and see the sights of the lake, the cliff that reflects an echo seven times and the King's Creek that flings itself down in desperate suicide from a height of 800 meters. Sailing past a small island, we come to the lakeside village of St. Bartholomew. Its only significant side is its pilgrimage church whose unusual layout shapes a clover leaf and its towers are covered by an onion dome.

In 1868, Bavarian King Ludwig The Second had a dream come true in Allgäu, southern Germany: Castle Neuschwanstein, the realisation of his amazing world of fantasy situated close to Castle Hoch-Schwangau where as a child the king had immersed himself in German mythology. The fairytale castle was seventeen years in construction and in every way the idyll of ancient German knighthood, a union of both castle and its surroundings. The dining room is full of paintings that depict scenes from Wartburg at the time of the legendary Singer War. The centre of the room is dominated by a massive table top made of gilded bronze, Siegfried and his fight with the dragon, good against evil. The Throne Hall is a most magnificent and impressive room, two storeys high with lateral rows of columns and a gilded apse which is reminiscent of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The monumental Singer Hall is the castle’s largest and most important room. It was built for the operas of Richard Wagner. The tall, wooden coffered ceiling features numerous images as well as the signs of the zodiac. The ballroom of the Wartburg is full of motifs of Parzival, Lohengrin and King Arthur and his Round Table. The castle absorbed vast amounts of money and created massive royal debts that finally resulted in tragedy. During the night of June 12th, 1886, Ludwig The Second was arrested, declared deposed and taken to Castleberg. Barely forty eight hours later he died at the age of forty under mysterious circumstances in Lake Starnberg. A royal legacy, Castle Neuschwanstein is now one of the world’s most famous buildings.

The real atmosphere of Bavaria lies in the many typical small towns and villages that are similar to each other in many aspects.
The wooden houses, the high red tiled roofs with the mini skylights, the old signs, the city walls, antique churches, domes and steeples, narrow streets and riverbanks, the large green areas and the many flowers take us to a world that is almost fairytale like, calm and jovial.
Of course, there aren't only large cities in Bavaria. The real atmosphere of the state lies in the many typical small towns and villages that are similar to each other in many aspects yet are all unique. The wooden houses, the high red tiled roofs with the mini skylights, the old signs, the city walls, antique churches, domes and steeples, narrow streets and riverbanks, the large green areas and the many flowers take us to a world that is almost fairytale like, calm and jovial. The layout of the settlements often follow that of medieval times and in some places even the city walls have remained.
Trade is bustling on the ground floors of the houses and people sit on the same squares where their ancestors used to sit. Settlements are separated by dark pine forests, green hills, meadows and cultivated lands. Although today Bavaria is only one of the German states, still we can feel everywhere that it's different, friendlier, more cheerful than the other states of the country.

The neo-gothic palace of the City Hall, the unique domes of theCathedral of Our Lady, the pillars of the generals, the city gates, the eclectic buildings of the Residenz are all there for the eyes, while the markets and the taverns all serve the needs of the body. For centuries, Nuremberg was the undeclared capital of the Holy Roman Empire and the preferred residence of most German kings, who kept their crown jewels here. Rich and stuffed with architectural wonders, it was also a magnet for famous artists, though the most famous of all, Albrecht Dürer, was actually born here. 'Nuremberg shines throughout Germany like a sun among the moon and stars,' gushed Martin Luther. By the 19th century, the city had become a powerhouse in Germany's industrial revolution.

Human error by a train controller was to blame for a crash in Bavaria, Germany, last week that killed 11 people, prosecutors said.
Dozens more were injured after two commuter trains collided on a single-track stretch of railway.
An area controller opened the track to the two trains and tried to warn the drivers, according to the prosecutors.
The man, a 39-year-old, is likely to be charged with involuntary manslaughter and could face five years in jail.
"If he had complied with the rules... there would have been no collision," said Chief Prosecutor Wolfgang Giese.
The trains crashed head-on while both were travelling at about 100km/h (60mph) east of Bad Aibling, a spa town about 60km south-east of Munich.

Although the Supersprint exhaust on the car is pretty loud inside the car, it doesn't show as loud here. Perhaps I need to get an external microphone. When the wind noise gets pretty loud in this video (it's a convertible after all) the car is going about 100 km/h.

While most of Europe is mired in financial crisis, the German state of Bavaria is booming. As exports rise and unemployment reaches a 20-year low, they wonder why the Greeks can't follow their lead.
As the rest of Europe is being slowly absorbed by the Eurozone crisis, Bavaria is going from strength to strength. It's now the richest state in Germany, which is now the richest country in Europe. "We're living in paradise", boasts one Munich resident. Not so long ago the money men of Wall Street and London thought Germany was a bit of a joke, but no one's laughing now. And there's growing discontent amongst Germans about having to prop up the rest of the Eurozone. "These countries! They have to not spend too much money", says Dr Anton Kathrein, an industrialist. With Bavaria conspicuously having a great time, it is rapidly becoming a magnet for Europe's economic refugees. Juliana Salija escaped war torn Yugoslavia 17 years ago for a better life in Greece. Two months ago she fled there, where one in five are now jobless. "I love that place but it was impossible", she says. So what is the secret to this German success and are they justified in criticising their neighbours' work ethic? This report goes in search of some answers.

The slaughter traditionally takes place in the autumn and early winter, and the timing has several practical considerations. It can start as soon as it gets cold, as the cold is required as a natural method of preserving the relatively large quantities of meat during the butchering. Yet, because people often do the work in the open, it is preferable that the temperatures aren't too much below freezing during this time, hence the slaughter rarely extends into winter. Also, slaughter activities typically need to produce results before the Christmas season, to provide for the festive cuisine.
In the past, this was also the only time of the year when people could afford to eat larger amounts of meat. In modern times, almost any family in Europe that is so inclined can afford to slaughter, yet there is also an abundance of pre-processed meat in the shops, so the traditional method of slaughtering is becoming more and more of a folk custom rather than a necessity.
The slaughter requires numerous preparations, including troughs, large quantities of boiling water, large wooden barrels for storing meat, pots, sharp knives, and in modern times also artificial intestines (hoses for various sausages).
Historically, butchering was a trade passed from father to son. Today the initial slaughter is normally performed by a professional butcher. After that, the meat is butchered by laymen, and the process is accompanied by various local rituals.

King Ludwig the Second (1845-1886) was known as the 'Mad Monarch of Bavaria' but left in his passing a series of fantastic castles that are visited by over 3 million people a year and recognized the world over.
This is the unusual story of an ill-fated King and his tragic end, his strange relationship to the composer Richard Wagner and a first-hand visit to his famous creations.
I also hoped to illustrate how the lush musical selections of Wagner conveying the beauty of the Bavarian mountains and countryside helped to shape the majestic fantasies of King Ludwig.
Hosted by Munich's own Octoberfest Queen, Ms. Brigitte Viez with observations, video and photography by Bruce Blank and Charlene Henning.

Driving a Peugeot 205 CTI on a cloudy day in Northen Bavaria.
Although the Supersprint exhaust on the car is pretty loud inside the car, it doesn't show as loud here. Perhaps I need to get an external microphone. When the wind noise gets pretty loud in this video (it's a convertible after all) the car is going about 100 km/h.
