A temperature is an objective comparative measure of hot or cold. It is measured by a thermometer, which may work through the bulk behavior of a thermometric material, detection of thermal radiation, or particle kinetic energy. Several scales and units exist for measuring temperature, the most common being Celsius (denoted °C; formerly called centigrade), Fahrenheit (denoted °F), and, especially in science, Kelvin (denoted K).
The coldest theoretical temperature is absolute zero, at which the thermal motion of atoms and molecules reaches its minimum - classically, this would be a state of motionlessness, but quantum uncertainty dictates that the particles still possess a finite zero-point energy. In addition to this, a real system or object can never be brought to a temperature of absolute zero by thermodynamic means. Absolute zero is denoted as 0 K on the Kelvin scale, −273.15 °C on the Celsius scale, and −459.67 °F on the Fahrenheit scale.
The kinetic theory offers a valuable but limited account of the behavior of the materials of macroscopic bodies, especially of fluids. It indicates the absolute temperature as proportional to the average kinetic energy of the random microscopic motions of those of their constituent microscopic particles, such as electrons, atoms, and molecules, that move freely within the material.
The Met Office (officially the Meteorological Office until 2000) is the United Kingdom's national weather service. It is an executive agency and trading fund of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and a member of the Public Data Group. The chief executive is Rob Varley and the chief scientist is Dame Julia Slingo. The Met Office makes meteorological predictions across all timescales from weather forecasts to climate change. The Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research and the National Meteorological Library and Archive are part of the Met Office. At the Met Office headquarters at Exeter in Devon is the Met Office College, which handles the training for internal personnel and forecasters from around the world.
The Met Office was established in 1854 as a small department within the Board of Trade under Vice-Admiral Robert FitzRoy as a service to mariners. The loss of the passenger vessel, the Royal Charter, and 459 lives off the coast of Anglesey in a violent storm in October 1859 led to the first gale warning service. In 1861 FitzRoy had established a network of 15 coastal stations from which visual gale warnings could be provided for ships at sea.
A thermometer is a device that measures temperature or a temperature gradient. A thermometer has two important elements: (1) a temperature sensor (e.g. the bulb on a mercury-in-glass thermometer) in which some physical change occurs with temperature, and (2) some means of converting this physical change into a numerical value (e.g. the visible scale that is marked on a mercury-in-glass thermometer).
There are various principles by which different thermometers operate. They include the thermal expansion of solids or liquids with temperature, or the change in pressure of a gas on heating or cooling. Radiation-type thermometers measure the infrared energy emitted by an object, allowing measurement of temperature without contact.
Thermometers are widely used in industry to control and regulate processes, in the study of weather, in medicine, and scientific research.
Some of the principles of the thermometer were known to Greek philosophers of two thousand years ago; by the 18th century, standardized scales allowed the readings of different thermometers inter-comparable.
This short and informative animation is just one in a series of educational animations commissioned by the Met Office and produced by Drive Creative Studio Ltd. We began each animation process by dissecting the core messages to be communicated and producing rough storyboard sequences. The Met Office was keen to develop resources that met the needs of the curriculum but for the modern classroom. The use of multimedia resources in the classroom is on the rise and the Met Office wanted to produce an engaging set of animations that would give a fresh feel to its educational offering. Animation, narration and backing track were produced by Drive Creative Studio and with added sound fx the video was complete. Useful for CBSE, ICSE, NCERT & International Students Grade : 7 Subject : Geography Lesson :Air Topic: Atmospheric Temperature Air temperature is a measure of how hot or cold the air is. It is the most commonly measured weather parameter. More specifically, temperature describes the kinetic energy, or energy of motion, of the gases that make up air. As gas molecules move more quickly, air temperature increases. Check with your vehicle's repair manual for testing parameters. The intake air temperature sensor detects intake air temperature and transmits a signal to the ECM. The temperature sensing unit uses a thermistor, which is sensitive to the change in temperature. Electrical resistance of the thermistor decreases in response to the temperature rise. Tools: Safet...

This video is about Cooling Load Calculation. Cooling load is the rate at which sensible and latent heat must be removed from the space to maintain a constant space dry-bulb air temperature and humidity.[1][2] Sensible heat into the space causes its air temperature to rise while latent heat is associated with the rise of the moisture content in the space. The building design, internal equipment, occupants, and outdoor weather conditions may affect the cooling load in a building using different heat transfer mechanisms.[1] The SI units are watts. Overview The cooling load is calculated to select HVAC equipment that has the appropriate cooling capacity to remove heat from the zone. A zone is typically defined as an area with similar heat gains, similar temperature and humidity control re...

Dr. Bruce Bugbee, president of Apogee Instruments, talks in-depth about the use of research-grade infrared radiometers for conducting high-accuracy, non-contact, surface temperature measurement. In certain applications, using a high-accuracy infrared radiometers is critical for making measurements that are meaningful. In particular, Apogee Instruments IR sensors have been used all over the world for hydrology studies, road-surface monitoring, plant canopy drought stress detection, and several other applications requiring a rugged, highly accurate sensor. To elaborate on one application, Dr. Bugbee, who is also a current professor of crop physiology at Utah State University, discusses their use in crop canopy temperature monitoring in this lecture. It was created through an analysis of weather station data collected from around 40,000 locations. These temperature fluctuations show the movement of weather patterns across the continents. One can also easily observe the cycle of warming and cooling associated with the seasons.
In this video I go over how to test and troubleshoot the outside temperature sensor. This video was made using a BMW E46 3 series. I go over the wiring diagram, how to remove the instrument cluster, and wiring checks. I explain what causes the sensor reading to be either -44 constant or +122. This video was made by request for Alex to help him troubleshoot a constant temperature reading of -44 on his BMW.
