Jaina Bhagavati-Sutra of circa 5th century A.D. mentions that Purulia was one of the 16 Mahajanapadas and was a part of the country known as Vajra-bhumi in ancient times. However, little is known about Purulia before the East-India Company obtained the 'Diwani' of Bengal, Bihar, Orissa in 1765. By Regulation XVIIII of 1805, a Jungle Mahals district composed of 23 parganas and mahals including the present Purulia (known as 'Purulia' those days) was formed. By Regulation XIII of 1833 the Jungle Mahals district was broken up and a new district called Manbhum was constituted with headquarters at Manbazar. The district was very large in size and included parts of Bankura, Burdwan of present West Bengal and Dhanbad, Dhalbhum, Saraikela and Kharswan of present states of Jharkhand and Orissa. In 1838 the district headquarters was transferred to Purulia of today. Since the formation of the district it was withdrawn from regular administration and placed under an officer called Principal Assistant to the agent to the Governor-General for South-Western Frontier. The title of the officer Principal Agent was later changed to Deputy Commissioner by Act XX of 1854. Finally in 1956 Manbhum district was partitioned between Bihar and West Bengal under the States Reorganization Act and the Bihar and West Bengal (Transfer of Territories) Act 1956 and the present district Purulia was born on 1st November, 1956.
Purulia is the westernmost district of West Bengal with all-India significance because of its tropical location, its shape as well as function like a funnel. It funnels not only the tropical monsoon current from the Bay to the subtropical parts of north-west India, but also acts as a gateway between the developed industrial belts of West Bengal and the hinterlands in Orissa, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Uttarpradesh. For its convenient location, this place has acquired an important place in the tourist map in India.

Chhau is a form of dance that has become very popular in West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Orissa. The Chhau dance has its origins in Mayurbhanj in Orissa. This form of dance was performed during the end of Chaitra, which are March-April months. The locals gathered around the dancers for entertainment, in awe, and in reverence. Various episodes from the epics where taken and communicated to the people using the Chhau dance. episodes from Ramayana, Mahabharata, and also from the Puranas where used in the Chhau dance.
Various kinds of drums where used during the Chhau dance. The expectation from the Chhau dance was to drive away the evil forces and let the righteousness prevail among the people. Beating of drums signified the starting of the dance and this was followed by the invocation of the lord Ganesha. Colorful clothes where worn for the dance. The use of Chhau masks was also popular.
Paper, mud, and clay are used to make the Chhau masks. The masks are painted in pastel shades and have a frank, simple, and bold look. The effectiveness, originality, and beauty of the Chhau dance are dependant on the Chhau masks. Each mask represents a character from the epics, the Puranas, and from mythology. The eye- brows, mouth, and eyes are painted to give those special effects and give completeness to the looks of the Chhau dancers.
There are three variations of the Chhau dance depending on the place from where it comes. The Seraikella Chhau, Mayurbhanj Chhau, and Purulia Chhau are the three different variations of Chhau dance performed in three different states of Eastern India. Seraikella Chhau is from Jharkhand. Purulia Chhau is performed in West Bengal. Mayurbhanj Chhau is performed in Orissa. The Chhau masks are used for the Seraikella Chhau and Purulia Chhau and normally not used in the Mayurbhanj Chhau.
You can buy our Chhau masks and use them for the Chhau dance being organized locally in your area. During festivals Chhau dance can be performed anytime of the year as a form of entertainment. Dancers from Mayurbhanj, Purulia, and Seraikella can also travel for the cultural festivals and perform there. The Chhau masks are now available for you to buy online. These colorful, decorative, and innovative masks can be used to decorate your home. Some people decorate the entrance to their house using these Chhau masks. Chhau masks are also a perfect gift item. The bright colors used, the time spent by the artist to make the Chhau mask, and the diligence that goes in making the masks is admirable.
While traveling to a different country you can carry these Chhau masks and gift them to your friends. The receiver will be immensely pleased with the features of the masks, their colors, and vibrancies. Bishnupur is a town in the Bankura District of West Bengal about 132 km, from Kolkata. It is famous for its terracotta temples and baluchari saris. The town has a glorious past that is reflected in its rich architecture, music and handicrafts such as pottery and weaving. It prospered in the 17th and early 18th Centuries. Ruled by a line of Hindu Rajas of the Malla dynasty, Bishnupur developed a unique form of architecture and has perhaps the most brilliant and detailed terracotta work in Eastern India that has withstood the ravages of time. The history of Bishnupur can be traced back to 694 AD, when King Raghunath I founded the Malla dynasty. However, it was much later in 994 AD that the place was named Bishnupur. The name is derived from the name of the name of the Hindu God ‘Vishnu’. The majority of the people belong to the ‘Vaishnava ‘ sect. The most powerful king of the dynasty was King Raghunath Singh Dev II, who ruled from 1626 AD. At that time the administration of Bengal was in the hands of Shahjahan’s son Suja. He developed a close friendship with the king and there followed a period of peace when art and music, already flourishing, reached great heights. It was during this period that the Jorebangla Temple was erected.

Baranti is a small, quiet and scenic place. There is a 2 km long irrigation project dam, located between two small hillocks, Muradi Hill and Baranti Hill. Baranti is in the vicinity of Ramchandrapur Irrigation Project. One gets a grand view of the reservoir from Baranti.
It is a place where one can take a break from drudgery and daily monotony and simply rejuvenate one's mind and soul. It is part of the wonderful Rarh countryside.
Baranti is also a picnic spot where people from nearby areas, such as Asansol, come for a day-long picnic. Preferred season: Winter.
It is 6 km from Muradi railway station on the Adra-Asansol line. One can hire a cycle rickshaw or a trekker at the railway station.
Cycle rickshaws are available for local movement in Muradi. Some hired transport is also available near Muradi railway station.
Garpanchkot in West Bengal is situated near the Panchet Dam on the boarder of Bardhaman district and Jharkhand. This isolated, quiet and serene valley resonates with the melodious chirping and call of different variety of birds. Alongside nature's amazing beauty, Garpanchkot is also a testimonial to a rich ancient historical heritage.
Barakar is the nearest railway station. From Howrah to Barakar Station, trains available are Black Diamond Express, Shaktipunj Express, Mumbai Mail, Coalfield Express, Doon Express. From station by auto or car the distance is 15 km to Garpanchkot Forest Bungalow. By road one has to take the G.T. Road. On reaching Barakar-Beguniya crossing, turn left and take the Dishergar Road to arrive at Garpanchkot.

Glimpses of remains of Hetampur Rajbari (king's house) of Birbhum, West Bengal India Hetampur is a town in Suri Sadar subdivision of Birbhum District in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is situated near Dubrajpur . It is famous for the Rajbari, which has historical value. The earlier name of the place was Raghabpur, named after Raghab Roy, who was a Zamindar of the place under the Royal Kings of Rajnagar. Murshid Quli Khan, Nawab of Bengal, came, on the request of the Rajnagar kings, to tame the rebellious Raghab Roy. The latter was defeated and he fled. Thereafter, Hatem Khan became Zamindar, of this place and it was renamed Hatempur. With the passage of time it became Hetampur.[2] It is said that Hafeez Khan, a soldier, had an affair with a royal princess of Delhi. He fled from Delhi along with the princess and was provided refuge by Hatem Khan. He followed the latter as jaigirdar of Hetampur.
